- Open each publisher’s current store page and confirm which launcher sells it in your region.
- Check whether the title requires a separate publisher account, an account link, or a different launcher when it starts.
- Confirm that the edition includes the DLC you want and that saves or progression can move between your intended devices.

Family sharing and household access
What Steam Families provides
Steam Families combines family-library access with parental features and supports up to six family members. Eligible games appear in the family library so members can access them from their own accounts. The account that bought a game remains its owner; joining a family does not give another member a transferable license.
Eligibility is controlled at the game level. A shared title can be played offline only when that game supports Family Sharing, so “in the family library” does not guarantee every offline scenario. Steam Families lists a wider set of named tools: game-access controls, activity monitoring, playtime limits, reports, and approval workflows. This is useful when a household wants one place to approve a game, review activity, and enforce a schedule.
Battle.net’s documented controls focus on playtime and access to some games. Because the portal qualifies coverage across features and titles, test the settings with the games your child actually uses rather than assuming a platform-wide block. For either platform, decide who owns the adult account, which child account will play, which titles are permitted, and whether restrictions must apply to a separate publisher account. Keep recovery email addresses and parental credentials under the guardian’s control.
Remote play and playing away from the desk
Steam Remote Play
Steam Remote Play sends the game’s video and input between a host computer running the game and another connected computer or supported Steam Link device. The demanding work remains on the host; the receiving device is not independently running the game. Your experience therefore depends on the host computer being on, the network path between devices, and the title’s compatibility.
Remote Play Together is a related feature for supported local multiplayer games. The host runs the game and invites friends to join the local session remotely. Installation, updates, DLC, and account links
The launcher is only one layer of game management. A smooth setup depends on four separate entitlements:
- Store license: which account purchased the base game and which region can access it.
- Game edition: whether the standard, deluxe, or complete package contains the expansions you expect.
- Publisher account: whether the game asks you to sign in or link an account outside the launcher.
- Save and progression service: where your profile, inventory, achievements, and saves are stored.
Record these before moving between launchers. Buying a game on Steam does not automatically grant a separate Battle.net purchase, and a Battle.net entitlement does not automatically appear in Steam. - Buy once, deliberately. Purchase the edition on the launcher that satisfies the preceding checks. Keep receipts and account-recovery information with the purchasing account.

Assuming a shared game is always playable offline
Steam Family Sharing permits offline play only when the particular game supports it. Before travel, start the shared game on the intended device while online and verify that its offline mode works.
Expecting a Steam Cloud save to be universal
Cloud files are configured by the developer. Let synchronization finish on the old computer, check the new computer’s save, and retain a manual backup for important progress.
Confusing a launcher license with a publisher account
A launcher purchase may still require a separate sign-in or link. Write down which account owns the game and which account stores progression before changing email addresses or unlinking services.
Leaving a remote-download computer unavailable
