Neither method is universally best. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists both boiling and steam as ways to sanitize infant feeding items after they have been cleaned. Boiling gives you a fixed instruction—keep fully covered, disassembled parts at a boil for 5 minutes. Steam requires a compatible microwave or plug-in system and the manufacturer’s instructions for loading, sanitizing, cooling and drying. Your best choice depends on your baby’s age and health, the materials in your bottles, and which method you can perform consistently and safely.

For babies younger than 2 months, babies born prematurely, or babies with weakened immune systems, CDC says daily sanitizing is particularly important. For older, healthy babies, daily sanitizing may not be necessary when every item is carefully cleaned after each feeding. A dishwasher that uses hot water plus heated drying or a sanitizing setting can also remove the need for a separate sanitizing step.

What the CDC means by “sterilizing” baby bottles

Parents commonly say “sterilize,” while CDC guidance describes these home methods as sanitizing. Sanitizing is an additional step after washing; it does not replace cleaning. Milk residue and formula must be removed from bottles, nipples, rings, caps, valves and other feeding parts after every feeding before boiling or steaming can be useful.

CDC’s current guidance, published March 19, 2025, establishes procedures and a risk-based schedule. It does not provide a head-to-head laboratory result showing that boiling removes more germs than steam, or that steam is faster, cheaper or more energy-efficient. Choose based on compatibility, handling and your household routine rather than an unsupported claim that one method is inherently more powerful.

Boiling vs. steam at a glance

Decision point Boiling Steam system Dishwasher alternative
CDC-recognized procedure Put disassembled items in a pot, cover them with water, bring the water to a boil and boil for 5 minutes. Remove with clean tongs. Put disassembled items in a compatible microwave steam container or plug-in steam system. Follow the system and feeding-item instructions for sanitizing, cooling and drying. Clean items in a dishwasher using hot water and either a heated drying cycle or a sanitizing setting. A separate sanitizing step is then unnecessary.
Equipment Pot, water, heat source and clean tongs. Compatible microwave container or plug-in steam system. Dishwasher and feeding items suitable for dishwasher use.
Most important check Confirm that every bottle component tolerates boiling water. Confirm that each component is suitable for that specific steam method and fits as directed. Confirm that the machine supplies hot water and heated drying or a sanitizing setting, and that the items are dishwasher-safe.
Handling after the cycle Use clean tongs, then air-dry on a clean, unused towel or paper towel in a protected area. Use the manufacturer’s cooling and drying instructions; keep sanitized parts protected while they dry. Keep items protected after the dishwasher cycle if they are not used immediately.

When daily sanitizing matters most

Clean feeding items after every feeding regardless of the sanitizing schedule. CDC recommends daily sanitizing (or more often) for extra germ removal, with particular emphasis when:

  • The baby is younger than 2 months.
  • The baby was born prematurely.
  • The baby has a weakened immune system because of illness or medical treatment.

For an older, healthy baby, CDC says daily sanitizing may not be necessary if bottles and their components are cleaned carefully after each use. That is a risk-based recommendation, not a statement that sanitizing is harmful or that cleaning can be skipped. If a clinician has given your family a stricter plan, follow that plan.

How to sanitize baby bottles by boiling

Boiling is the listed method that needs no dedicated appliance. It is appropriate only for components whose instructions allow exposure to boiling water.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Clean the work area and tools. Wash the feeding items, bottle brush and wash basin before you sanitize. Cleaning those supporting items prevents you from transferring residue or dirt back onto the bottle parts.
  2. Disassemble every feeding item. Separate the bottle, nipple, collar or ring, cap, valve and any other removable piece. Water must reach each surface; an assembled bottle can trap residue and air.
  3. Place the parts in a pot. Arrange the disassembled items in the pot and cover them completely with water. Keep the items submerged rather than relying on steam rising from the water.
  4. Bring the water to a boil. Once the water is boiling, continue boiling for 5 minutes, the timed instruction specified by CDC.
  5. Remove parts with clean tongs. The water and components are hot. Use clean tongs instead of your hands, and avoid placing hot parts on an unclean counter.
  6. Air-dry in a protected place. Put the sanitized parts on a clean, unused towel or paper towel in an area protected from dirt and dust. Let them dry thoroughly. Do not rub or pat them dry with a dish towel, which can transfer contaminants or leave fibers behind.

Boiling checks before you start

  • Read the instructions for the bottle, nipple and every accessory; manufacturers may specify that a material or printed component must not be boiled.
  • Make sure the pot is large enough for complete water coverage without forcing or bending parts.
  • Use clean tongs and a clean drying surface each time.
  • If a part changes shape, cracks or no longer fits correctly, stop using that part and consult its instructions before the next cycle.

How to sanitize baby bottles with steam

Steam can be produced in a microwave container designed for steaming or in a plug-in steam system. The method is not a universal timed recipe: CDC directs you to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the particular steam system and for each feeding item.

  1. Clean first. Wash the bottle parts, brush and basin before loading the steam equipment.
  2. Disassemble completely. Separate every removable component so steam can contact the relevant surfaces.
  3. Check compatibility and fit. Confirm that each part is suitable for the particular microwave or plug-in system. Arrange pieces exactly as the system instructions show; do not force parts into a crowded container.
  4. Add the specified water. Use the amount and placement required by the steam system. A microwave container and a plug-in unit may have different loading and water instructions.
  5. Run the sanitizing cycle as directed. Follow the system’s stated cycle, including any microwave power or time setting. Do not substitute a guessed time.
  6. Follow cooling instructions. Steam-heated parts and the container can be hot. Use the waiting period or handling method specified by the manufacturer before opening or removing parts.
  7. Dry and store as directed. Keep sanitized components protected while they cool and dry. If the instructions call for air-drying, allow them to dry thoroughly before assembly.

Steam-specific failure points

  • Wrong material or appliance: A part that tolerates washing may not be approved for boiling or a particular microwave steam container. Verify the instructions for both the part and the appliance.
  • Overloading: If parts do not fit as the system specifies, remove some items and run another cycle instead of stacking or forcing them.
  • Premature opening: Opening immediately can expose you to hot steam and can disturb the cooling or drying procedure. Use the stated cooling interval.
  • Wet storage: Do not assemble or store parts while they are still wet unless the manufacturer specifically directs that method. Let them dry thoroughly in a protected area.

When a dishwasher can replace a separate sanitizing step

CDC says a separate sanitizing step is not necessary when infant feeding items are cleaned in a dishwasher that uses hot water and either a heated drying cycle or a sanitizing setting. This option is distinct from merely placing bottles in a dishwasher: both the hot-water wash and the qualifying drying or sanitizing feature matter.

Check that every component is suitable for dishwasher use and follow the item’s loading instructions. Disassemble parts so water can reach them. When the cycle ends, protect the clean items from dirt and dust until they are needed. If your machine lacks heated drying and a sanitizing setting, the CDC condition for skipping a separate sanitizing step has not been met.

Do you need to buy a baby-bottle sterilizer?

No dedicated appliance is required by the CDC guidance. Boiling uses a pot, water, a heat source and clean tongs. Steam uses either a microwave steam container or a plug-in steam system that is compatible with the feeding parts. A qualifying dishwasher can combine cleaning and sanitizing in one cycle. A device is therefore an optional way to carry out a listed steam method, not a requirement for safe bottle care.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying a microwave steam sterilizer for baby bottles or a plug-in bottle steam sterilizer, check that every bottle, nipple, valve, ring and cap fits and is approved for that system. Follow the device instructions for water amount, arrangement, cycle, cooling and drying. CDC does not endorse a brand or establish that a dedicated device performs better than correctly performed boiling.

What about cost, speed and energy use?

The equipment requirements are different, but CDC does not provide a comparison of purchase price, operating cost, cycle time, water use or energy use. A pot-based setup does not require buying a dedicated steam appliance; a steam setup requires a compatible container or unit; and a dishwasher requires the stated hot-water and heated-drying or sanitizing functions. Those facts describe what each method needs, not which one costs less or finishes sooner.

Do not treat the five-minute boiling instruction as proof that boiling is faster overall: heating the water, handling hot parts and drying them are also part of the routine. Likewise, do not assume a steam cycle has a particular duration unless the appliance manufacturer specifies it. The safest choice is the method whose complete instructions you can follow every time.

Compatibility details parents often miss

Compatibility is determined part by part, not just bottle by bottle. A bottle body may be approved for a method while a nipple, printed marking, valve membrane or replacement ring has a different instruction. Check the current care information for each component, especially after changing brands or buying replacement parts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use boiling only when all parts in that batch are approved for boiling water.
  • Use a microwave steam container only with parts approved for that container and microwave method.
  • Use a plug-in unit only as its instructions specify; do not improvise a load that blocks steam from reaching surfaces.
  • Use the dishwasher route only when each item is dishwasher-safe and the machine meets CDC’s hot-water and heated-drying or sanitizing condition.

If a part becomes warped, cracked, cloudy or unable to fit securely, set it aside and consult the manufacturer’s instructions before using it again. A damaged part can also make later cleaning difficult.

A repeatable routine reduces mistakes

Set up a clean work area before starting. Gather the pot or steam system, clean tongs if boiling, the bottle brush and a clean drying towel or paper towel. Keeping these items ready helps separate the washing step from the sanitizing step.

  1. After the feeding, separate every removable part rather than leaving milk in a nipple or valve.
  2. Clean the parts, brush and basin using the item’s washing instructions.
  3. Choose boiling, steam or a qualifying dishwasher cycle based on compatibility and your baby’s current risk category.
  4. Use the exact boiling time or appliance directions; do not shorten, extend or guess a cycle because the load looks clean.
  5. Handle hot parts with clean tools or after the specified cooling period.
  6. Air-dry thoroughly in a protected area and avoid touching inside surfaces.
  7. Store or assemble only after drying, unless the manufacturer specifically directs another procedure.

If a cycle is interrupted, water did not cover boiled parts, the steam container was loaded incorrectly or the dishwasher did not run its qualifying settings, treat the process as incomplete. Clean the items again if needed and repeat a complete, compatible cycle rather than assuming partial exposure was sufficient.

Which method fits your household?

Choose boiling when simplicity and no dedicated appliance matter

Boiling requires only a pot, water, a heat source and clean tongs. It is a practical choice for families that do not want to buy or store a steam system, provided every component is approved for boiling and you can maintain the 5-minute boil and careful air-drying routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose steam when your parts and routine support it

A microwave or plug-in steam system may suit a household that sanitizes frequently and has feeding items that fit the system. The convenience comes from following the appliance’s loading, cycle, cooling and drying instructions—not from a CDC finding that steam is superior. Compatibility must be checked for every part, including small valves and nipples.

Use the dishwasher when its settings qualify

If your dishwasher supplies hot water and heated drying or a sanitizing setting, it can combine cleaning and sanitizing in one cycle under CDC’s guidance. This can eliminate a separate pot or steam cycle, but only for items approved for dishwasher use and only when those machine settings are used.

A decision process for new parents

  1. Identify the baby’s risk category. Daily sanitizing deserves priority for babies younger than 2 months, babies born prematurely and babies with weakened immune systems. For older, healthy babies, careful cleaning after each feeding may be sufficient without daily sanitizing.
  2. Inventory the parts. List every component that touches milk or formula, including valves and rings. Find the care instructions for each one.
  3. Remove incompatible methods. If any component is not approved for boiling, do not boil the set. If a part is not approved for your microwave or plug-in steam system, do not load it into that system.
  4. Check available equipment. A qualifying dishwasher may already provide the needed process. Otherwise compare the pot-and-tongs setup with a compatible steam container or plug-in unit.
  5. Choose the routine you can repeat correctly. The method only works as described when items are cleaned first, disassembled, processed for the stated cycle, handled cleanly and allowed to dry in a protected area.
  6. Reassess when equipment or health circumstances change. A new bottle material, replacement valve, different appliance or change in the baby’s medical status can alter which method is appropriate.

Cleaning is still the non-negotiable first step

Sanitizing cannot compensate for residue left inside a nipple, valve or bottle seam. After every feeding, separate the parts and clean them with the appropriate washing method. Clean the bottle brush and wash basin before they are used for sanitizing, as CDC specifies. Only after cleaning should you boil, steam or use a qualifying dishwasher cycle.

Handling and storage after sanitizing

Protection after the cycle is part of the process. For boiled items, CDC specifically directs you to place parts on a clean, unused towel or paper towel in an area protected from dirt and dust, and to let them air-dry thoroughly without rubbing or patting them with a dish towel. Steam and dishwasher users should apply the same practical goal while following their system’s stated cooling and drying directions: keep parts protected, allow complete drying and assemble only when ready to use.

Clean tongs are appropriate for removing boiled parts. For steam systems, wait for the instructed cooling period before opening or reaching into the container. Hot water and steam can burn, so keep the pot, container and freshly processed parts away from children while they cool.

What this comparison cannot establish

CDC guidance does not compare boiling and steam in a controlled performance test. It does not establish a universal winner for speed, operating cost, water use, energy use or measured germ reduction. It also does not say that every family needs a dedicated bottle sterilizer. The evidence supports two recognized sanitizing routes, a qualifying dishwasher route and a risk-based schedule.

That makes the most defensible answer conditional: use boiling if your parts tolerate it and you can complete the 5-minute procedure safely; use steam if your parts fit and are approved for the specific system and you follow its instructions; use the dishwasher when hot water plus heated drying or a sanitizing setting are available. In every case, clean after each feeding and follow the current instructions for the bottle components and appliance.

How do I use a steam sterilizer for baby bottles?

Clean and disassemble the parts, confirm that they fit and are approved for the particular microwave or plug-in steam system, and follow that system’s instructions for water, loading, cycle, cooling and drying. CDC does not provide one universal steam time.

Do I need to sanitize bottles after every feeding?

Clean bottles and parts after every feeding. Daily sanitizing is particularly important for babies younger than 2 months, babies born prematurely or babies with weakened immune systems. For older, healthy babies, daily sanitizing may not be necessary when items are cleaned carefully after each use.

Can a dishwasher sanitize baby bottles?

Yes, when the dishwasher uses hot water and either a heated drying cycle or a sanitizing setting, and every feeding item is dishwasher-safe. Under those conditions, CDC says a separate sanitizing step is not necessary.

Is steam better than boiling for killing germs?

CDC recognizes both as sanitizing methods but does not provide a head-to-head test establishing that one removes more germs or is universally faster, cheaper or more effective. Compatibility and correct handling should determine the choice.

Can I boil an assembled bottle?

No. Disassemble the bottle and separate nipples, rings, caps, valves and other removable pieces so water can reach each surface. Boil only parts whose instructions allow boiling water.

Do I still have to wash bottles if I use a sterilizer?

Yes. Sanitizing is an additional step and does not remove milk or formula residue. Clean the bottle, brush and wash basin first, then sanitize if your baby’s age, health or care plan calls for it.

What should I do with bottles after sanitizing?

Keep parts protected from dirt and dust while they cool and dry. For boiled items, use a clean, unused towel or paper towel and do not rub them with a dish towel. Follow the steam system’s cooling and drying instructions, and assemble only after parts are thoroughly dry unless the manufacturer directs otherwise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a dedicated baby-bottle sterilizer required?

No. CDC lists boiling, compatible microwave or plug-in steam systems and a qualifying dishwasher as options. A dedicated steam device is optional; it does not replace cleaning or the need to follow each component’s care instructions.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Boiling and steam are both CDC-recognized ways to sanitize cleaned baby bottles. Boil compatible, disassembled parts for 5 minutes, or use a compatible steam system exactly as directed. A dishwasher with hot water plus heated drying or a sanitizing setting can remove the need for a separate sanitizing step. Clean after every feeding, sanitize daily when your baby is younger than 2 months, premature or immunocompromised, and choose the method you can perform safely and consistently.
