Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a Steam store page, use screenshots that are at least 1920 × 1080 pixels and have a 16:9 aspect ratio. That specification is for game developers preparing store-page assets, not a universal size rule for every image a player captures or uploads to a Steam profile. If you mean a personal screenshot, Steam’s published capture and API documentation does not specify a general minimum resolution or maximum file size.
Steam screenshot size depends on what you are making
“Steam screenshot” can mean two different things: a promotional image on a game’s Steam store page, or a player’s own capture saved to their Steam screenshot library or community profile. The store-page asset has a published size and aspect-ratio specification. The personal screenshot workflow does not have an equivalent general pixel-size rule in the cited Steam documentation.
| Use | What Steam documents | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Game store-page screenshot | Steamworks specifies 1920 × 1080 pixels minimum and a 16:9 aspect ratio; at least five screenshots are required for a product page. | At least five genuine gameplay images, each at or above the minimum dimensions and in 16:9. |
| Player screenshot captured with Steam Overlay | Steam documents the Overlay and screenshot uploader workflow, but does not state a universal resolution or file-size limit for personal-library screenshots. | Capture the image at the resolution and framing you want; do not treat the store-page minimum as a personal-upload requirement. |
| Game integration using ISteamScreenshots | The API accepts an image file path, width and height, and JPG, PNG or TGA. Its optional thumbnail is 200 pixels wide and should retain the image’s aspect ratio. | Pass the correct dimensions for the image file. Steam can generate a thumbnail if you do not provide one. |
The store-page specification is from Valve’s Steamworks Store Graphical Assets documentation. The separate player and API workflows are described in Valve’s Steam Screenshots documentation and ISteamScreenshots Interface reference.
Store-page screenshots: dimensions and content
Meet the minimum without distorting the image
Steamworks specifies “Size: 1920×1080 minimum. 16:9 aspect ratio” for store screenshots. In practical terms, 1920 × 1080 is the minimum canvas size, and larger images should keep the same 16:9 proportions. For example, 2560 × 1440 also has a 16:9 ratio. A 1920 × 1200 image is larger in one dimension than 1920 × 1080, but it is not 16:9, so it does not meet the stated aspect ratio.

Check both dimensions and ratio before uploading. Do not stretch a 4:3 or ultrawide capture to force it into 16:9; stretching changes the appearance of the game. Instead, capture at an appropriate widescreen resolution or crop carefully, ensuring the result still shows the relevant gameplay and remains at least 1920 × 1080.
Provide at least five actual gameplay images
Steam requires at least five screenshots for a product page. They should show what the game is actually like to play, rather than functioning as general advertising panels. A useful set gives prospective players a truthful sense of the game’s environments, action, interface and visual variety.
- Use in-game captures rather than concept art or pre-rendered cinematic stills.
- Do not place awards, marketing copy or written product descriptions in the screenshot images. Steam provides other store-page spaces for that material.
- Include a menu only when it is a distinctive part of the game, not merely to fill a slot.
- Consider showing the in-game interface when it helps explain how players interact with the game.
These are Steamworks content recommendations, not a claim that every image must show a particular genre, camera angle or interface layout.
Review localization and age-suitability details
For localized store pages, Steamworks describes adding alternative-language versions to an existing screenshot thumbnail. A language suffix in the filename can make those versions easier to identify while preparing assets. Review the age-suitability flags before publishing: Steam says screenshots are not marked suitable for all ages by default and recommends flagging at least four that qualify. Insufficiently flagged screenshots may not appear in some Steam placements. Apply flags based on the actual content of each image.

Player screenshots: capture with Steam Overlay
For a screenshot of a game you are playing, Steam’s documented route is the Steam Overlay. The Overlay must be active for its screenshot feature to be available. F12 is the default screenshot hotkey, though you can change it along with other screenshot settings.
- Open Steam’s Settings → In-Game and check that the Steam Overlay is enabled. In the same area, review or change the screenshot hotkey if F12 is inconvenient.
- Launch the game through Steam and confirm that the Overlay is available in-game.
- Press the configured screenshot key to capture the current frame.
- After closing a game, use the Screenshot Uploader if it opens automatically. You can also open it from View → Screenshots or from the Overlay.
- Choose which captures to upload. Images uploaded through this workflow appear on your community profile and the game’s community hub.
Menu labels and behavior can vary with Steam client updates, but Valve’s screenshot feature documentation names Settings → In-Game for screenshot settings and View → Screenshots for the uploader. See Valve’s Steam Screenshots page for the documented workflow.
Why a player’s screenshot may not be 1920 × 1080
The capture reflects the game image and display conditions when you took it. A game running at a different resolution or aspect ratio can produce an image with different pixel dimensions. That does not, by itself, mean Steam has rejected a personal screenshot: the 1920 × 1080 minimum is documented for store-page assets, not as a universal personal-library upload requirement.
Steamworks API: dimensions, formats and thumbnails
Developers integrating screenshot handling can use ISteamScreenshots::AddScreenshotToLibrary. The call accepts an absolute path to the screenshot file plus its width and height in pixels. Steamworks lists JPG, PNG and TGA as supported formats.

An optional thumbnail must be 200 pixels wide and should keep the screenshot’s aspect ratio. If you do not supply a thumbnail, Steam can generate one. The API call is asynchronous; use the documented completion callback to handle the result rather than assuming the image has been added immediately after making the call. Consult the ISteamScreenshots reference for the function parameters and callback details.
The API’s explicit width and height arguments do not establish a universal file-size cap or minimum resolution for all player screenshots. Nor should its file-format list be treated as a separate store-page image specification. Keep the workflows distinct: the Overlay normally handles player captures, while a game can deliberately hook screenshot behavior through the API.
Common Steam screenshot problems and fixes
F12 does nothing
Check that the Steam Overlay is active for the game, then confirm the assigned hotkey under Steam → Settings → In-Game. F12 is only the default; another application or a changed Steam setting may mean a different key is in use. Steam’s screenshot feature is unavailable through the Overlay if the Overlay is not active.
The store uploader rejects an image or the page is short of screenshots
For store assets, verify the image is at least 1920 × 1080, has a 16:9 aspect ratio and is one of the required five or more screenshots. Check actual pixel dimensions rather than relying on how large the file looks on your monitor. Also confirm that the image is a gameplay screenshot rather than concept art, promotional text or a cinematic still.

The image is cropped or looks stretched
Compare its original dimensions with its final dimensions. A non-16:9 capture may have been cropped to fit a 16:9 store asset; stretching instead can distort characters, objects and interface elements. Re-capture at a widescreen resolution or make a deliberate crop that preserves the important gameplay. Do not infer a personal-upload rule from how a store-page asset has been prepared.
The API thumbnail looks wrong
When supplying a thumbnail to AddScreenshotToLibrary, make it 200 pixels wide and retain the screenshot’s aspect ratio. If your integration does not need to provide a thumbnail, omit it and let Steam generate one. Because the call is asynchronous, use the completion callback to determine when the operation has completed.
You cannot find a captured image in the uploader
Open the uploader from View → Screenshots or from the Overlay, rather than relying only on it opening automatically after the game closes. Check that you captured through Steam’s Overlay workflow and that the Overlay was active.

- Confirm these are store-page assets, not merely personal captures.
- Prepare at least five genuine gameplay screenshots.
- Make each image at least 1920 × 1080 and 16:9; preserve proportions instead of stretching.
- Leave promotional copy, awards, concept art and pre-rendered cinematic stills out of the screenshot area.
- Include menus only when they are a distinctive game feature; show the interface when it helps illustrate play.
- Handle translated versions and filename suffixes deliberately, and review age-suitability flags before publishing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a 4K screenshot on a Steam store page?
Yes, provided the image keeps a 16:9 aspect ratio; Steamworks states a minimum rather than a maximum store-screenshot resolution.
Does Steam require PNG for screenshots?
No single format should be inferred for every workflow: the ISteamScreenshots API reference lists JPG, PNG and TGA, while the store asset size guidance addresses resolution and ratio.
Do player screenshots have to be 16:9?
Valve’s cited player screenshot documentation does not state a universal 16:9 requirement for personal-library captures.
