Steam has four major seasonal sales each year, but Valve does not decide which individual games receive a discount. Publishers and developers set their own sale participation and prices within Steamworks rules. If a game becomes cheaper soon after you buy it, Valve generally allows a refund request for a game purchased within 14 days with less than two hours of playtime, then you can buy it again at the sale price. Approval is still subject to the normal refund conditions.
When is the next Steam sale?
Valve’s published seasonal-sale schedule currently lists four recurring events: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. The dates below are the currently listed dates for the next events, but sale calendars can change, so check the Steam store and Valve’s current Steamworks schedule when a date matters to your purchase.

Does every game go on sale during a seasonal event?
No. Seasonal sales are open to released games that meet Valve’s eligibility rules, but the publisher or developer chooses whether to participate and what discount to offer. A game can therefore remain at its regular price throughout a major sale. The existence of a seasonal event is not a promise that a particular title will be discounted.
Are themed Steam events the same as seasonal sales?
No. Steam also runs themed festivals and other promotional events. Those events can have their own eligibility requirements, invitation or registration steps, and product categories. A game that is absent from one themed event may still qualify for a seasonal sale, and qualification does not force its publisher to submit a discount.

How often can a Steam game be discounted?
Valve’s Steamworks discounting rules generally require a 30-day gap between discounts for a product. These are rules for publishers and developers; they regulate when a discount may be scheduled, not how often a customer is guaranteed to see a particular game on sale.

Why seasonal-sale exceptions do not guarantee a discount
The seasonal exception only changes the timing rules for an eligible product. It does not require a publisher to submit a title, choose a particular percentage, or maintain the same price in every country. A publisher may also decide that a regular promotion, launch plan or regional strategy is more important than joining a specific event.
Can a publisher change the base price during a discount?
Steam says a base price cannot be changed while a discount is active or while a discount is scheduled for the future. A base-price increase in any currency then creates a 30-day discount cooldown. These controls are intended to make the relationship between the normal price and the sale price clearer to customers.

Publisher pricing decisions
Each publisher or developer controls the product’s base price and discount settings within Steam’s rules. A publisher can change a base price, schedule a different discount, end a promotion, or leave the game undiscounted. The 30-day rules constrain timing but do not prescribe the amount of a discount.

Regional prices and local law
Steam notes that discounts can appear differently in different territories because of local laws. One regional store may show a crossed-out former price and a prominent percentage, while another may display only the current amount or a different presentation. Taxes, currency conversion and regional pricing decisions can also make the amount differ from what a customer sees in another country.
Use the current price and terms on your own regional store page as the authoritative offer. Do not infer that a missing percentage label means the discount is unavailable, and do not assume that a price shown in a screenshot from another region applies to your account.
What a price increase means for the next sale
If the publisher raises the base price in any currency, Steam’s 30-day restriction applies before the game can be discounted again. A base-price decrease does not create that same cooldown. This is why a game can appear to have an unusual gap before its next promotion even when a major seasonal event is approaching.
Should you buy now or wait for a sale?
Steam’s calendar cannot predict the price of a specific game. Make the decision from the offer currently shown in your region and from how soon you expect to play.

- Check the exact current price. Open the game’s store page while signed in, because the amount and tax treatment can depend on your country and account region.
- Decide whether today’s discount is acceptable. A major seasonal sale may contain the title, but participation and the eventual percentage are publisher decisions.
- Protect the refund window. For a normal game or software purchase, the standard route requires a request within 14 days and less than two hours of playtime. Extensive testing after purchase can remove that straightforward eligibility.
- Identify the purchase type. A game license, downloadable content, an in-game purchase, wallet funds and a third-party key do not all use the same refund rules.
- Keep regional differences in mind. A discount label or percentage shown to another customer is not evidence of the offer on your store page.
There is no Valve guarantee that waiting for the next seasonal event will produce a lower price. Waiting may be sensible if you are comfortable postponing play, but buying now can be reasonable when the current price is acceptable and you expect to use the game within the normal refund period.
Can I refund a Steam game if it goes on sale?
For a normal Steam game or software application, Valve’s standard policy is a refund request within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. If the game goes on sale after you bought it, submit the request through Steam Support. Valve specifically says that buying just before a sale, requesting a refund and immediately buying the title again at the sale price is not considered refund abuse. The ordinary eligibility conditions still apply, and Valve does not promise that every request outside those conditions will be approved.
How to submit the request
- Open Steam Support and sign in to the account that made the purchase.
- Select the purchase or game from your recent purchases or account history.
- Choose the refund option and provide the requested reason, such as the title going on sale after purchase.
- Select an available destination: Steam Wallet funds or the original payment method when that payment method supports refunds.
- Submit the request and watch for Valve’s decision in your support account and email.
Valve says an approved refund is issued within one week. The timing of the credit can still depend on the payment provider when the original method is used. A refund request outside the 14-day or two-hour limits can be submitted, but it is reviewed individually rather than automatically approved.

Can I buy the game again after the refund?
Yes. Valve’s policy expressly addresses the situation of refunding a title purchased just before a sale and immediately rebuying it at the sale price. The policy says this is not considered abuse. You must still use the normal Steam Support process, and the original transaction must meet the applicable refund requirements or receive an individual review.

Do all Steam purchases use the two-week, two-hour rule?
No. The 14-day and under-two-hour standard is for Steam games and software applications. Other transaction types have additional conditions.

Why a key-site purchase is different
If you obtained a key or wallet card from a third-party seller, the transaction was not made through Steam. Valve therefore cannot refund that outside purchase under its Steam refund process. You would need to ask the seller about its own policy; Steam’s standard game refund route does not convert an external purchase into a Steam-purchased transaction.
What happens when you used a bundle or gift?
Bundles and gifts have their own requirements, so do not assume that the game rule applies automatically. Check the relevant section of Valve’s current refund policy and identify whether the request concerns the original purchaser, a gift recipient or a package containing multiple items.
Common sale-and-refund problems
The game has more than two hours of playtime
The automatic standard is no longer met. You may still submit a request and explain the circumstances, but Valve describes requests outside the normal limits as subject to review, not guaranteed approval. Avoid continuing to play while deciding whether to request a refund.
The purchase is older than 14 days
The same individual-review rule applies. A later discount does not reset the purchase date or create a new refund window.
The store shows no percentage discount
Check the actual current amount on your regional store page. Regional law and presentation can affect strikethrough prices and percentage labels, so the absence of a prominent label is not conclusive by itself.
The request was sent to the wrong place
Use Steam Support for a Steam transaction. A card issuer, key reseller or wallet-card seller cannot approve a Valve refund for a purchase it did not process, and Valve cannot refund a third-party transaction it did not sell.

Valve says approved refunds are issued within one week. If you selected the original payment method, allow for that provider’s processing time; if the method does not support refunds, Steam Wallet funds may be the available destination.
What Valve’s policies do—and do not—promise
- The seasonal calendar identifies event dates, not a guaranteed discount for every game.
- The 30-day cooldown governs publisher discount eligibility; it is not a forecast of the next sale price.
- A seasonal-sale exemption removes a discount-to-discount cooldown, but it does not override the 30-day restriction after release or a base-price increase.
- The refund policy provides a standard route for eligible games and software, not automatic approval for every request.
- Regional prices and labels can differ, so your signed-in store page is more reliable than a third-party screenshot or a price from another country.
Valve’s buyer-facing Steam Refunds policy was last updated April 23, 2024. Its Steamworks discounting documentation is partner-facing and was current as accessed in October 2026; the future sale dates above should be rechecked against the live schedule before relying on them.
