For the easiest Steam-to-Steam setup, start with Steam Remote Play. It is built into Steam, requires no separate host server, and lets you select an installed game from the remote Library. Choose Moonlight with Sunshine when you want a self-hosted setup, more control over the host, or the ability to stream programs that are not in your Steam library.

Neither option has a documented, universal Linux latency or image-quality advantage. The result depends on the host computer, Linux client, game, hardware video encoder and decoder, and network. Treat the choice as a workflow decision, then compare both on the devices and network you actually use.

What the two options actually are

Steam Remote Play

Steam Remote Play is part of the Steam client. The game runs on one computer, while Steam captures its video and audio and sends the stream to another computer or supported Steam Link device. The receiving device sends controller, keyboard, or mouse input back to the host. This makes it practical to play a demanding Windows or Linux game on a lower-powered Linux laptop, mini PC, or desktop.

Remote Play Together is related but different: it lets you invite friends into supported local co-op sessions. It should not be confused with streaming your own game from one computer to another. Steam store pages can also show separate indicators for Remote Play Together and Steam Link suitability, so those labels answer different questions.

Moonlight and Sunshine

Moonlight is a client, not a complete host-and-client system. It began as an unofficial, open-source client for NVIDIA SHIELD/GameStream streaming software. Its documentation recommends Sunshine as the host to start with. Sunshine runs on the gaming computer, exposes games or applications, and accepts connections from Moonlight clients. Moonlight lists Linux as an official client platform.

This separation is the main conceptual difference. Steam combines the launcher, host workflow, game list, and client experience in one ecosystem. Moonlight supplies the client while Sunshine supplies a separately installed, self-hosted host. That extra separation takes more setup but gives you a broader application model.

Steam Remote Play vs. Moonlight at a glance

Question Steam Remote Play Moonlight with Sunshine
What must be installed? Steam on the gaming computer and receiving computer, or a supported Steam Link device Sunshine on the gaming host and Moonlight on the Linux receiving device
Primary library model Games installed in the host’s Steam library Programs exposed by Sunshine; applications can be added manually
Linux client support Use Steam on a Linux receiving computer or supported Steam Link hardware Moonlight has an official Linux client
Host operating systems documented by the setup guide Steam’s own supported host and client environments Sunshine hosts on Windows 10/11, macOS 12 or newer (experimental), and Linux distributions including Debian 11, Ubuntu 22.04, and Fedora 38 or newer; check the live guide for current versions
Manual non-game programs Not the normal Steam library workflow Supported: add a program manually in Sunshine
Linux controller caveat Steam documents a /dev/uinput or /dev/input/uinput permission requirement; Valve currently says Linux machines do not have rumble support Controller behavior depends on the Moonlight/Sunshine path and your Linux setup; test the exact controller and game
HDR on Linux No universal Linux HDR guarantee established in the cited Steam guidance HDR10 streaming is beta on certain clients; Linux guidance has specific launch, GPU, and display requirements
Published head-to-head latency winner Not established by the cited official documentation

Which one should you choose?

Choose Steam Remote Play when convenience is the priority

  • Your games are already in Steam and you want the shortest path from installation to play.
  • You want the remote Library to show installed games automatically.
  • You prefer one account, one client, and Steam’s existing controller and streaming menus.
  • You are testing game streaming for the first time and do not need applications outside Steam.

Steam is usually the sensible first attempt for a Steam-to-Steam household because the host and client discovery flow is already integrated. You can move to Moonlight later if the application scope or host controls are not sufficient.

Choose Moonlight with Sunshine when control and scope matter

  • You want a self-hosted streaming server rather than a launcher-specific workflow.
  • You need to stream a game from another launcher, an emulator, a desktop application, or a custom executable.
  • You are comfortable installing host software and setting credentials in a separate configuration interface.
  • You want to tune which programs are exposed to the Linux client.

Moonlight is not automatically faster or sharper. Its advantage is configurability and program coverage, not a guaranteed performance result.

Set up Steam Remote Play to a Linux computer

The following path applies when the game is installed on the host computer and you are receiving the stream on Linux.

  • 8BitDo Exclusive Wireless Technology - “8Speed”, it delivers an exceptionally stable 2.4G connection with ultra-low latency under 1ms. Engineered for rock-solid reliability, it features strong anti-interference and a 10m range with virtually no lag.
  • Trigger Mode Switch - Easily switch between linear Hall Effect triggers and non-linear tactile triggers for optimal control across different gaming scenarios.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection). Customizable 6-Axis Motion Control. Turbo function. Rumble vibration. Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2.
  • 2 Pro back paddle buttons, extra R4/L4 bumpers, and tactile bumpers & D-pad for enhanced control and faster response. Includes a multifunctional charging dock and USB-C adapter for seamless connectivity.
  1. Install and sign in to Steam on both computers. Use the same Steam account on the gaming host and the Linux receiving computer. The host needs the game installed.
  2. Keep Steam running on the host. The computer that runs the game must remain powered on, connected to the network, and signed in.
  3. Open the remote Library on Linux. Steam should expose the host’s installed games through the Library view.
  4. Select the game and choose “Stream.” The game launches on the host while its display and audio appear on the Linux computer.
  5. Test input before a long session. Move through the game’s menus, verify the expected controller or keyboard layout, and check audio output.

Valve says games can be streamed between a user’s own computers, including from a more powerful computer to a lower-powered Linux device. A supported Steam Link device can serve as the receiving endpoint as well; see Steam Link hardware guidance for that product category.

If a game does not appear as expected, confirm that it is installed on the host, both clients are signed in to the intended account, and the host has not suspended or exited Steam. A store-page indicator for Steam Link suitability is separate from the general ability to stream your own Steam games, while Remote Play Together applies to supported local co-op invitations.

Set up Moonlight with Sunshine on Linux

Moonlight requires a host component. Installing only the Linux client leaves nothing for it to connect to.

  1. Install Sunshine on the gaming host. The Moonlight Setup Guide documents Sunshine hosts on Windows 10/11, macOS 12 and newer (experimental), and Linux, including Debian 11, Ubuntu 22.04, and Fedora 38 and newer. Because supported versions can change, check that live guide before installing.
  2. Start Sunshine and open its configuration interface. Create the credentials Sunshine requests. Use a strong, unique password, especially if the host is reachable from more than one trusted device.
  3. Install Moonlight on the Linux receiving computer. Moonlight is the client used to discover or add the Sunshine host.
  4. Pair the client and host. Select the Sunshine computer in Moonlight, enter the pairing code when prompted, and authenticate with the credentials configured on the host.
  5. Choose an exposed application. Sunshine can present games and applications to Moonlight. If a program is not listed automatically, add it manually using the setup guide’s application configuration instructions.
  6. Launch and test input. Start the application from Moonlight, then check controller mapping, keyboard shortcuts, audio, and whether the application exits cleanly back to the Moonlight menu.

This route is more involved than Steam’s built-in flow because you are maintaining a host service, its credentials, and its application list. In return, the Linux client is not limited to the Steam library.

Linux controller support: the detail that can decide the choice

Valve’s Linux streaming guidance says Steam needs /dev/uinput or /dev/input/uinput to be readable and writable by Steam for streaming game controllers. If those device nodes are inaccessible, the stream may display correctly while controller input fails or behaves inconsistently.

Valve also currently says Linux machines do not have rumble support for this streaming path. If vibration is important, test a controller in the exact host-and-client arrangement before committing to a multiplayer session. A controller working locally in Linux does not prove that its events and force-feedback behavior will survive remote streaming.

Moonlight and Sunshine have a different software path, so do not assume that fixing Steam’s uinput permissions fixes Moonlight, or that a controller that works in Moonlight will work identically in Steam. Check button order, analog sticks, triggers, and any game-specific remapping on the receiving computer.

HDR on Linux: treat it as a beta feature

Moonlight’s documentation describes HDR10 streaming as beta on certain clients. For Linux, the setup guidance calls for launching Moonlight directly from a console rather than from within a desktop environment, an Intel GPU (other vendors may work but are untested), and an HDR10-compatible display. The guide also lists known HDR artifacts and setup caveats.

That is not a plug-and-play promise. If HDR is a requirement, verify all of the following on the actual Linux client:

  • The display accepts HDR10 and is configured for it.
  • The client GPU meets the documented Linux condition.
  • Moonlight is launched in the documented way.
  • The host game is rendering HDR and the desktop or compositor is not altering the signal.
  • Highlights, black levels, and color do not show the artifacts described in the setup guide.

Do not select Moonlight solely because it has an HDR option; the documented Linux support is conditional and experimental.

Host, client, and network requirements

Host encoding

Valve recommends a quad-core CPU for the streaming host. The host must also capture the game and encode its video while continuing to run the game, so an older or heavily loaded computer can become the bottleneck even when the network is fast.

Client decoding

Valve recommends a client GPU with hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding. A Linux computer can therefore be powerful enough to run a desktop yet still provide a poor stream if its video decode path is unsupported, falls back to software, or is overloaded by the desktop environment.

Wired versus wireless

Steam Support states, “We recommend using a wired network for the best streaming experience.” The same guidance notes that some users succeed on wireless N and AC networks with a good signal, but results vary. Ethernet is an optional troubleshooting step for either method when Wi-Fi introduces drops or instability; it is not a prerequisite, and the cited guidance does not establish a particular cable category, cable length, router model, or guaranteed latency improvement.

For a fair comparison, test both methods from the same room and network path. A different access point, band, mesh hop, or congested channel can make a software comparison meaningless.

Steam streaming ports

Steam’s documentation lists these ports for streaming:

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
  • UDP: 27031 and 27036
  • TCP: 27036 and 27037

If a firewall or segmented home network blocks the connection, allow the documented traffic on the host and client networks. Do not expose ports to the public internet merely to make a home setup work; first verify local firewall rules, network isolation, and whether both devices are on the same trusted network.

How to compare real-world performance fairly

No cited official page supplies a dated, controlled head-to-head benchmark for Steam Remote Play versus Moonlight on Linux. There is therefore no defensible universal winner for latency, smoothness, or image quality.

Run a small, repeatable test instead of relying on a general claim:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use the same host game, display resolution, refresh rate, controller, and network connection for both methods.
  2. Test a visually simple scene, a busy combat scene, and a menu. Motion and fine text reveal different problems.
  3. Check control response during a timed action, not only while standing still.
  4. Look for frame pacing, dropped frames, audio crackle, macroblocking, washed-out colors, and resolution changes.
  5. Repeat once over Ethernet and once over your normal Wi-Fi if Wi-Fi is your intended connection.
  6. Record which host encoder, Linux GPU decoder, display mode, and game settings were used so the result can be reproduced.

This method cannot turn your results into a universal benchmark. It does tell you which workflow behaves better on your hardware, network, and games—the variables that determine your actual experience.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The game is visible, but the controller does nothing in Steam

  • Check that Steam can read and write /dev/uinput or /dev/input/uinput on the Linux machine.
  • Reconnect the controller before starting the stream and confirm the expected device appears in Linux.
  • Test a second game to separate a global input problem from a game-specific layout.
  • Do not expect rumble on Linux based on Valve’s current documentation.

The Moonlight client cannot find or pair with Sunshine

  • Confirm Sunshine is running on the intended host and that its configuration credentials were completed.
  • Check local firewall rules and network isolation between the two devices.
  • Verify that the Linux client and host are on the network you intended to test, rather than on separate guest or isolated segments.
  • Use the current pairing instructions in the Moonlight FAQ and setup guide if the interface has changed.

A program is missing from Moonlight

Sunshine can expose manually added programs. Add the executable or launcher through Sunshine’s application settings, then restart or refresh the Moonlight application list. A program outside Steam will not appear merely because Moonlight is installed.

The stream stutters or looks worse than expected

  • Test Ethernet or move the Wi-Fi client closer to the access point.
  • Check whether the host CPU is quad-core or better and whether encoding is competing with the game.
  • Confirm hardware H.264 decoding on the Linux client rather than an overloaded software path.
  • Compare the same game and scene in both clients before changing several variables at once.

HDR shows artifacts on Linux

Return to SDR while diagnosing. If you need HDR, verify the documented Moonlight Linux conditions—console launch, Intel GPU condition, HDR10 display, and the guide’s caveats—before treating an artifact as a game problem.

A practical decision checklist

  • Steam-only library and minimum setup: begin with Steam Remote Play.
  • Non-Steam programs or custom launchers: install Sunshine and use Moonlight.
  • Rumble-dependent controller: test Steam’s Linux behavior first; Valve currently documents no rumble support there.
  • HDR enthusiast setup: use Moonlight only with the documented Linux beta conditions and a willingness to troubleshoot.
  • Unreliable Wi-Fi: test a wired connection before blaming either application.
  • Performance dispute: run the same-game, same-network comparison; official documentation does not establish a universal winner.

Bottom line

Steam Remote Play is the better default for a Linux receiver when your games already live in Steam and you value convenience. Moonlight paired with Sunshine is the better fit for a self-hosted, configurable setup that can stream manually added programs. Both can work well, but neither documentation supports declaring one universally faster or better-looking. Your host encoder, Linux decoder, controller path, HDR requirements, and network quality decide the result.
