The change is a warning about a known Proton compatibility failure, not a blanket judgment on Linux gaming and not proof that every Windows game without the warning will run.
What Steam changed
Valve’s Linux section in the Steam Client Beta release notes says: “On Desktop Linux we will now show the SteamOS unsupported dialog when installing games that are known to not work with Proton.” The trigger is installation of a title that Valve has identified as incompatible with Proton.

The same release-note entry says the compatibility-tool selector is always visible. Steam places the recommended compatibility tool—or a native game’s Steam Runtime—at the top and labels it Default. The selector also gains aliases such as Proton Stable, making the available choices easier to understand.

This documentation covers the beta channel. Valve does not give a universal date for when the identical behavior will reach every stable Steam Client installation, so users on the stable channel may not see it yet.

What Proton does
Proton is Valve’s modified distribution of Wine, used by Steam Play to run Windows game builds on Linux. Valve describes Proton as including Vulkan-based Direct3D 11 and Direct3D 12 implementations, Steamworks and OpenVR bridges, fullscreen and gamepad improvements, and the esync patchset. Valve says the Wine improvements were designed and funded in a joint development effort with CodeWeavers.
Because Proton translates and bridges Windows technologies rather than turning a Windows executable into a native Linux program, compatibility depends on the game’s engine, launcher, drivers and online services. Valve specifically cautions that games using complex digital-rights-management systems or anti-cheat systems may be difficult or impossible to support.

How to interpret the unsupported dialog
Read the dialog as a strong signal that the currently known Proton path is not expected to work. It does not mean that Linux gaming as a whole is unsupported, and it does not say that a native Linux build is broken.
Steam’s interface reuses the SteamOS unsupported dialog on desktop Linux. That is a user-interface choice; it does not turn a desktop Linux installation into SteamOS or indicate that the computer is a Steam Deck.

What the warning establishes
- Valve has recorded a known incompatibility for the game’s Proton path.
- The warning appears at installation time in the beta client behavior described by Valve.
- Trying a different Proton version may require experimentation, but the warning means Valve does not currently expect a reliable result.
What it does not establish
- It is not a guarantee that the game can never launch under any future Proton, driver or game update.
- It is not evidence that every title without a warning is guaranteed to work.
- It does not replace the game developer’s statements about anti-cheat or DRM support.
Native Linux versus Windows games through Proton

A title can therefore be sold through Steam and still be unsuitable for Proton. Store availability is not a compatibility certification.
What to do when you see the warning
- Confirm which build Steam is using. Check the game’s Properties and compatibility settings, and determine whether Steam is offering a native Linux build or a Windows build through Proton.
- Check the reason for the failure. Look for current community reports and the developer’s published position on anti-cheat, DRM, launchers and supported operating systems. These dependencies often determine whether a workaround is realistic.
- Decide before committing time or money. If the game depends on unsupported kernel-level anti-cheat or complex DRM, assume that changing Proton versions is unlikely to solve the underlying limitation.
- If you proceed, use the compatibility selector deliberately. The beta client keeps the selector visible and identifies the recommended tool as Default. A different tool can be tested, but success is not assured.
- Recheck after updates. Proton, graphics drivers, game patches, launchers and anti-cheat policies can change independently, so an old report may no longer describe current behavior.
How reliable is Steam’s compatibility information?
Valve’s own support guidance describes Steam Play as having the potential to run Windows-only games on Linux while stating that compatibility is not guaranteed. The new dialog is more specific than a general compatibility label because it identifies a known failure, but it remains a snapshot of Valve’s current information.

The absence of a dialog should be treated as “no known warning was triggered,” not as a promise of successful launch, stable performance or working multiplayer. Conversely, a warning is a practical reason to investigate before installing, rather than an absolute prediction about every future configuration.
Desktop Linux and SteamOS are different cases
SteamOS and Steam Deck users may already recognize the unsupported-dialog design. The beta note extends that visual treatment to desktop Linux when the trigger is a game known not to work with Proton. Keep the platform distinction in mind when reading troubleshooting advice: a recommendation written for SteamOS or Deck verification may not account for a desktop distribution, its kernel, graphics stack or package versions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I force Proton after Steam shows the unsupported warning?
Steam can still expose compatibility-tool choices, but forcing another Proton version is an experiment rather than a supported fix. If the failure comes from DRM or anti-cheat that Proton cannot support, changing versions may not help.
Does no warning mean a game is guaranteed to work on Linux?
No. Valve states that Steam Play compatibility is not guaranteed, and updates to the game, Proton, drivers, launchers or anti-cheat can change results.
Is this warning only for Steam Deck?
No. Valve’s beta release note specifically describes the behavior on desktop Linux, while reusing the SteamOS unsupported-dialog design.
