Choose Steam Deck if you want portable play or a console that can later connect to a TV. Choose Steam Machine if you want a permanently connected SteamOS computer for a television or desk and prefer the higher hardware class Valve lists. A docked Deck is more flexible, but it does not become Steam Machine hardware; the right choice depends on where you play, the display you own, the games you need to run, and the complete setup cost.
Valve has not established current prices, regional ordering details, or a final availability date in the product information considered here. Steam Machine specifications may also change before availability, so treat its component list and Valve’s performance language as provisional rather than as an independent benchmark.

The Deck specifications come from Valve’s current OLED product listing, while the Machine figures come from its product page. Valve says some Steam Machine specifications may change before availability. Neither page supplies an independent benchmark, so do not convert the component lists into guaranteed frame rates or resolution targets.
How much faster is Steam Machine?
Valve markets Steam Machine as having “over six times the horsepower of Steam Deck” and says it can play a whole Steam library, including AAA titles. That is a vendor statement, not a third-party measurement. The product page also warns that specifications may change before availability.
The listed parts explain why Valve positions it higher: six Zen 4 CPU cores and a 28-compute-unit RDNA 3 GPU, compared with Deck OLED’s four Zen 2 cores and eight RDNA 2 compute units. Steam Machine also lists 8 GB of dedicated GDDR6 video memory in addition to 16 GB of DDR5 system memory. Those differences should provide more headroom for demanding games and higher-resolution displays, but the final experience will depend on power limits, cooling, drivers, game settings and the shipping configuration.

Display and power: handheld screen versus your own TV
Steam Deck OLED
The OLED Deck includes a 7.4-inch, 1280 × 800 display with refresh up to 90 Hz. Valve rates its 50 Whr battery for 3–12 hours of gameplay, with the estimate changing according to content and settings. A graphically heavy game at high brightness can therefore have a very different runtime from a lightweight title.
Deck’s integrated controls and screen make it a complete playable system out of the box. When you want a larger image, its USB-C port can carry display output. A dock is optional, not a performance upgrade.
Steam Machine
Steam Machine assumes a fixed display. Its HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 outputs let you choose a television or monitor, but the screen, cable, controller and any keyboard or mouse are separate purchases. It uses an internal AC power supply, so it is not a battery-powered alternative to Deck.

- Reliable Wired Ethernet: Enjoy a stable and consistent network connection with the built-in RJ45 port, ensuring low-latency performance for smooth online gaming and streaming.
- Expanded Device Compatibility: Now works with Steam Deck LCD/OLED, ROG Ally / Ally X, Legion Go / Go S, and MSI Claw — making it your all-in-one solution across multiple handhelds. NOTE: Not for ROG XBOX Ally / XBOX Ally X.
This distinction matters when comparing budgets. A Deck can be your screen and controls on day one; a Machine quote should include the display and input devices you plan to use.
Using Steam Deck on a TV or desk
Valve’s Steam Deck Docking Station is designed to extend where the Deck can be used. It provides HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4, three USB-A ports, Gigabit Ethernet and power passthrough. Valve lists support for up to 4K at 60 Hz or 1440p at 120 Hz on external displays. Those are output capabilities; they do not mean every game will render internally at those resolutions or refresh rates.
- Connect the dock’s power supply and place the Deck in the dock’s USB-C connection.
- Connect the television or monitor to HDMI or DisplayPort, then select that input on the display.
- Attach a controller, keyboard, mouse or other accessories to the dock’s USB-A ports. Use Ethernet if you want a wired network connection.
- In SteamOS display settings, select the external resolution and refresh rate your screen supports.
- Set each game’s graphics options separately. Lowering resolution, detail or frame-rate targets may be necessary for demanding titles.
Docking changes the Deck’s connections and screen output, not its processor, graphics hardware or memory. It is the most versatile route if you want handheld play now and occasional TV gaming later.
SteamOS and game compatibility
Both products use SteamOS. Valve describes SteamOS as Linux-based, with Proton enabling many Windows games and compatibility labels that indicate expected behavior. Check the individual game rather than assuming that a SteamOS device supports the entire library.

Valve’s SteamOS page currently identifies Steam Deck and Legion Go S as officially supported devices on that page, while the Steam Machine product page says the Machine runs SteamOS. Valve also says Steam Machine ratings are being added to its Verified program. Support labels and game compatibility can change with updates, so check the title’s current store information and community reports before committing to a library-dependent purchase.
What to verify for a game you care about
- Look for the game’s SteamOS or Deck compatibility label.
- Check whether your required features—multiplayer anti-cheat, launchers, mods, ray tracing or a particular controller layout—work under Proton.
- Confirm that the game’s storage requirement fits the model you are considering.
- For a Machine, verify the rating once its device-specific entries are available rather than extrapolating from Deck results.
Storage, ports and peripherals
Deck OLED is listed with 512 GB and 1 TB NVMe options and includes a microSD slot. Steam Machine is listed with 512 GB and 2 TB options and also includes a microSD slot. Large modern libraries can consume either internal capacity quickly, so decide whether you prefer more built-in storage or an expansion card.
Deck’s single USB-C connection handles display output and charging; the dock adds HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-A and Ethernet. Steam Machine lists HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-A, USB-C and Gigabit Ethernet directly on the computer. Count your actual accessories before buying: a wired headset, keyboard, mouse, external drive and controller can exhaust ports faster than expected on a portable setup without a dock.

Total setup requirements and cost questions
No current price, release date or regional ordering status is established by the referenced Valve pages. Do not use an old launch price or a foreign-region listing as a current local total.
Budget for Steam Deck
- Deck OLED in the storage capacity you need.
- Optional dock if you want a TV or desk station.
- Optional microSD card for additional games.
- External controller, keyboard or mouse if the built-in controls are not suitable for docked play.
- A compatible display cable and television or monitor if you do not already own one.
Budget for Steam Machine
- The Machine configuration and any storage expansion.
- A television or monitor, because no screen is integrated.
- A controller for couch play, plus keyboard and mouse if you use desktop applications.
- Display cables and a free AC outlet near the installation.
- Network equipment or an Ethernet cable if wired connectivity is important.
Compare these complete baskets, not just the computer price. A Deck may be cheaper for someone who already owns a TV and only needs an occasional dock, while a Machine may make more sense if you are building a dedicated station and would otherwise add a dock, stand and separate controls to a handheld.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which is better for common gaming setups?
TV gaming in the living room
Steam Machine is the cleaner permanent installation: connect it to HDMI or DisplayPort, pair a controller and leave it in place. Choose Deck instead when you want the option to pick it up and play elsewhere, accepting the extra dock and cable management for TV use.
Desk monitor and mixed PC use
Steam Machine’s direct ports and higher listed hardware class suit a desk where the computer remains connected to a monitor, Ethernet and conventional peripherals. Deck can fill the same role through its dock, but its portable form means you are repeatedly unplugging or moving the system.
Travel, commuting and different rooms
Deck is the only practical choice because it includes a screen, controls and battery. Its 3–12-hour estimate is broad, so plan around your actual games and access to charging rather than assuming an all-day runtime.
Demanding AAA games
Steam Machine has the stronger specification on paper and is the more appropriate candidate when you want additional graphics headroom. Verify each game’s SteamOS status and wait for final hardware information; Valve’s “over six times” statement is not an independent performance result.
Families or households sharing one screen
Deck is easier to move between a personal handheld session and a shared TV. Machine is better when the household wants a single, fixed couch-gaming station and does not need the computer elsewhere.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a dock turns Deck into a Steam Machine
A dock supplies ports, charging and display connections. It cannot add CPU cores, graphics units, memory or battery capacity. Select Deck for its flexibility, not as an equivalent to the Machine’s listed hardware.
Using resolution support as a performance promise
The dock can output up to 4K at 60 Hz or 1440p at 120 Hz according to Valve, but that describes the external-display connection. Game rendering performance still depends on the Deck’s APU and the title’s settings.
Buying for an assumed final specification
Valve explicitly says some Steam Machine specifications may change before availability. Recheck the product page, configuration, storage and regional ordering information when you are ready to purchase.
Ignoring compatibility labels
SteamOS and Proton support many games, not every game. Check the exact titles you play, especially those with anti-cheat, third-party launchers or unusual peripherals.
Comparing only the box price
Include the display, dock, controller, storage, cables, network connection and power arrangement. The cheapest computer can become the more expensive complete setup once missing components are added.
A practical decision checklist
- Write down where you will play most: handheld, TV, desk or a mixture.
- List the display inputs and refresh rates you already own.
- Check compatibility for your five most-played games.
- Estimate required storage, including space for updates and larger future installs.
- Add every accessory needed for a usable setup.
- For Steam Machine, confirm the final specification and availability in your region before ordering.
- Choose Deck for mobility and flexibility; choose Machine for a fixed installation and the higher listed hardware class.
Bottom line: which should you buy?
Steam Deck is the better all-round choice for players who value portability, already own a TV or monitor, or want one device that can be handheld today and docked later. Its OLED screen, integrated controls and battery make it a complete system before accessories are added.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSteam Machine is the better fit for a dedicated TV or desk setup where portability is irrelevant and you want the stronger CPU and GPU configuration Valve lists. It requires a display, controller and fixed AC connection, and its final specifications and availability remain subject to Valve’s stated changes.
Whichever form you prefer, make the decision from your own games and complete setup—not from the phrase “six times the horsepower” alone. Confirm compatibility title by title, total the required accessories, and verify current regional details at the time of purchase.
