For most buyers who care primarily about smooth 1440p gaming and performance per dollar, a conventional gaming PC is the better choice. PC Gamer’s June 22, 2026 testing found that Steam Machine performance changes substantially by game, preset, ray tracing and upscaling. A Steam Machine makes more sense when its compact under-TV design, SteamOS interface and controller-first experience matter more than maximum frame rates, broad software compatibility or straightforward upgrades.
There is no single Steam Machine “1440p performance” figure. The meaningful comparison is always tied to a named game, resolution method, graphics preset, ray-tracing setting, frame-generation setting and the difference between average FPS and low-frame-time performance.

Quick answer
Choose a conventional gaming PC if you want higher or steadier frame rates at 2560×1440, the freedom to select individual components, a future graphics-card upgrade path or broad Windows software compatibility. Choose Steam Machine if you want a tidy living-room appliance that boots into SteamOS, resumes quickly and works naturally with a controller, and you are willing to reduce settings or use upscaling in demanding games.
- Best default for 1440p performance: a properly specified gaming PC with a graphics card selected from recent benchmarks for your own games.
- Best for a compact console-like setup: Steam Machine, provided you accept that Valve’s default and Steam Machine Verified test resolution is 1080p rather than a guaranteed native-1440p target.
- Biggest buying mistake: treating a selectable 1440p output mode or a frame-generated FPS counter as proof that every game is being rendered natively at a sustained 1440p frame rate.
What Steam Machine is
Valve describes Steam Machine as a compact gaming device running SteamOS, built around a semi-custom AMD desktop-class processor and graphics processor. Valve says it is roughly six times more powerful than Steam Deck; that is a relative device comparison from Valve, not a measured 1440p benchmark or a promise of six times the frame rate. Valve also highlights fast suspend and resume, cloud saves and a small-form-factor approach to PC gaming in the living room. See Valve’s Steam Machine documentation for the platform description.
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Powered by GeForce RTX 5060
- Integrated with 8GB GDDR7 128bit memory interface
- PCIe 5.0
- WINDFORCE cooling system
Valve’s feature and troubleshooting guide states that 1080p is the default game resolution and the resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing. A 1440p monitor or television can therefore be part of your setup, but display output and reliable in-game rendering at 2560×1440 are separate questions. A game may output to a 1440p display while internally rendering at 1080p and upscaling, or while using a lower preset to maintain playability.
Review-reported hardware
PC Gamer’s June 22, 2026 review lists the tested Steam Machine with a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 six-core/12-thread CPU, semi-custom RDNA 3 graphics, 16 GB of DDR5 system memory and 8 GB of dedicated GDDR6 VRAM. The review lists 512 GB and 2 TB storage variants. These are specifications reported by that review; check Valve’s live product page for any later revision, regional configuration or availability change.
| Specification | PC Gamer review listing | Why it matters for 1440p |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Semi-custom AMD Zen 4, 6 cores/12 threads | Supports game logic and background tasks, but the graphics workload usually determines performance at higher resolutions. |
| GPU | Semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 | Controls rendering performance, ray tracing capability and the practical settings you can use at 1440p. |
| System memory | 16 GB DDR5 | Shared operating-system and game capacity; demanding modern titles can make memory headroom relevant. |
| Dedicated VRAM | 8 GB GDDR6 | Affects texture settings and rendering workloads; actual behavior depends on the game and preset. |
| Storage options | 512 GB or 2 TB | Determines how many large games fit locally and changes the purchase price. |
What “1440p gaming” should mean in this comparison
1440p normally means 2560×1440 output, but that label alone does not identify the workload. Native rendering draws the game at 2560×1440. Upscaling renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs a 1440p image. Dynamic resolution changes the internal render scale during play. Frame generation inserts synthesized frames between traditionally rendered frames; the displayed FPS can rise while input latency and image artifacts also change.

- Whether the game is rendered natively at 2560×1440 or upscaled.
- The graphics preset, such as Ultra or Medium.
- Whether ray tracing is enabled and at what level.
- The upscaler and quality mode, if any.
- Whether frame generation is disabled or enabled.
- Average FPS and, where available, 1% lows or another low-frame-time measure.
Without those details, “runs at 1440p” can describe anything from a smooth native image to a lower-resolution internal render with generated frames. It is not a useful apples-to-apples performance claim.
What the published tests actually show
PC Gamer’s hands-on review provides two clearly attributable 1440p results. They are named-game measurements from one review setup, not an all-games average, a guarantee for every Steam Machine or a universal comparison against every PC.
| Game and test | Resolution and settings | Result reported for Steam Machine | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition | 1440p Ultra | 45 FPS average; 30 FPS 1% low | The average is playable for some users, but the 1% low indicates noticeably heavier moments than the headline average. |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 1440p Medium, ray tracing on, Quality FSR, no frame generation | 28 FPS average | This is a demanding ray-traced workload with upscaling; it is not evidence that every game will average 28 FPS. |
The review also reports that less demanding games and altered settings can produce acceptable results. That is why a single “Steam Machine FPS” number is misleading. The same hardware can be comfortable in one title and require a lower preset, a lower internal resolution or disabled ray tracing in another.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Average FPS versus low performance
Average FPS describes the overall rate across a test run. A 1% low describes the slower portion of frames and is often more revealing of stutter or uneven delivery. In the Metro Exodus result, 45 FPS average accompanied by a 30 FPS 1% low; a buyer sensitive to dips should not evaluate that result from the average alone.
Why frame generation must be labeled
Frame generation can make an on-screen counter look substantially higher because some frames are synthesized rather than fully rendered from new game input. It can also add latency or create visual artifacts. A PC and Steam Machine should be compared using the same frame-generation policy, and generated FPS should not be presented as if it were native rendered output.
Price and value
PC Gamer reported these United States review-time prices in June 2026:
| Steam Machine configuration | Reported US price |
|---|---|
| 512 GB, no controller | $1,049 |
| 512 GB with controller | $1,128 |
| 2 TB, no controller | $1,349 |
| 2 TB with controller | $1,428 |
Those figures were prices at the time of the review, not a permanent worldwide price list. Before buying, verify your region, tax, stock status, warranty, storage tier and whether the controller is included. Storage and controller choices change the total, so comparing only the lowest advertised configuration can produce the wrong value judgment.
PC Gamer’s reviewer considered those prices high relative to the measured performance and concluded that a conventional gaming PC could provide more performance for similar money. Reviewer Andy Edser wrote, “You can get much better performance for your money from a regular gaming PC hooked up to your telly box for similar cash.” That is the reviewer’s conclusion from the tested comparison, not a universal measurement covering every configuration or market.
What a fair gaming-PC comparison includes
A “gaming PC” is not one fixed specification. To compare one fairly with Steam Machine, price and test a complete system rather than naming only a graphics card.
- Graphics card and its memory capacity.
- Processor and cooling solution.
- System memory.
- Solid-state storage.
- Case, motherboard and power supply.
- Operating system and any required peripherals.
- Controller, wireless adapter and living-room cable needs.
The PC’s graphics card should be chosen from recent benchmarks for the games you actually play. PC Gamer compared Steam Machine with a system using an RTX 5060 and reported materially higher performance in several specific scenarios. That does not mean every RTX 5060 system wins every game or is automatically the best purchase; cooling, power limits, processor choice, drivers and the exact test settings still matter.
For a meaningful comparison, run the same game build at the same resolution, preset, ray-tracing mode, upscaler quality and frame-generation setting. Include the complete purchase cost and decide whether the PC’s larger footprint, possible fan noise, setup work and maintenance are acceptable in your room.
Choose a conventional gaming PC when these priorities lead
Higher or steadier 1440p frame rates
A PC gives you a wider range of graphics cards and power limits. You can select hardware aimed at native 1440p, prioritize higher 1% lows or trade image quality for a target refresh rate. Steam Machine can be adjusted, but its fixed platform leaves fewer ways to add rendering headroom.
Component choice and future upgrades
A desktop lets you replace or add major components as requirements change, especially the graphics card and storage. Upgrade compatibility depends on the motherboard, power supply, case clearance and cooling, so check those constraints before purchase rather than assuming every future card will fit.
Productivity and broad software support
A Windows gaming PC generally offers wider support for professional applications, specialist peripherals, launchers and games that depend on Windows-only components. It still requires updates, driver management and troubleshooting, but it is the more flexible general-purpose computer.
Choose Steam Machine when the living-room experience leads
Small, neat installation
Valve positions Steam Machine as a compact device for a television or other living-room display. PC Gamer praised the neat form factor and quiet operation in its review. If the system must fit beside a console or under a television, that physical convenience can be worth accepting lower performance per dollar.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSteamOS and controller-first operation
SteamOS presents a console-like interface around a PC game library. Valve documents fast suspend and resume and cloud-save integration. Those features reduce friction for someone who mainly launches Steam games from a sofa and does not want a conventional desktop tower in the room.
A willingness to tune demanding games
Steam Machine is a better fit if you are comfortable selecting a lower preset, reducing ray-tracing effects or using an upscaler when a demanding title does not hold your preferred frame rate. It is a poor fit if every game must run at native 1440p Ultra with no compromises.

Valve says that a game that runs well on Steam Deck should also run on Steam Machine without extra developer work. Treat that as useful platform guidance, not a guarantee that every Steam title, anti-cheat system, launcher, peripheral or non-Steam application will behave identically.
Before purchase, make a list of must-play games and check their current SteamOS compatibility, anti-cheat requirements and launcher dependencies. Also check whether you need office software, creative applications, device utilities or unusual controllers that are not part of a standard Steam setup.
PC Gamer’s review describes SteamOS 3 as Linux-based and reports setup and software friction during its own testing. That experience is tied to the review period and its configuration; it is not proof that every owner will encounter the same problem or that a future software update cannot change it. A Windows PC offers broader application compatibility, but brings its own setup, update and maintenance work.
How to compare the two systems before buying
- List your actual games. Separate visually demanding ray-traced titles from esports, indie and older games. The workload mix matters more than a generic 1440p label.
- Set a frame-rate goal. Decide whether you want a cinematic 30 FPS experience, around 60 FPS, or a higher refresh-rate target. Include tolerance for dips rather than judging only the average.
- Define image-quality rules. Decide whether upscaling, dynamic resolution, reduced ray tracing or frame generation is acceptable. Write those rules down before comparing results.
- Match test conditions. Use the same resolution, preset, ray-tracing state, upscaler quality and frame-generation setting on both systems.
- Compare complete prices. Add the desired Steam Machine storage and controller, or price the PC with its graphics card, processor, memory, storage, case, power supply and living-room accessories.
- Check the room. Measure available space, plan cable routing and consider noise, heat and whether a keyboard and mouse are needed from the sofa.
- Check software dependencies. Verify anti-cheat, launchers, mods, streaming tools and non-gaming applications before choosing SteamOS over Windows.
- Evaluate the upgrade plan. If you expect to replace the graphics card in a few years, favor a platform that gives you the required power, cooling and physical room.
Setting up Steam Machine with a 1440p display
- Confirm the display connection. Use the display input and cable recommended for your monitor or television, then select the correct input.
- Update SteamOS. Apply available system and controller updates before judging game performance so the test reflects the current installed software.
- Start with the game’s native profile. Record whether the title is using native 1440p, an internal resolution scale or an upscaler. Do not assume the display’s output label reveals the internal render resolution.
- Choose a repeatable preset. Begin with the game’s Medium or High profile, then adjust one demanding setting at a time. Ray tracing is often a major performance choice.
- Measure a representative scene. Use the same level, route or built-in benchmark for every change. Record average FPS and lows where the game or overlay provides them.
- Decide on frame generation separately. Test with it off first. If you enable it, record that setting and judge responsiveness as well as the displayed frame rate.
This process tells you what the device is actually rendering instead of turning a successful signal on a 1440p screen into a claim of sustained native 1440p performance.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistaking output resolution for render resolution
A television can report a 1440p input while the game internally renders lower and reconstructs the image. Check the game’s resolution scale and upscaler mode.
Comparing different presets
Steam Machine at Medium with Quality FSR is not directly comparable with a PC at Ultra native resolution. Keep the settings identical or clearly label the trade-off.
Using generated FPS as a performance guarantee
Frame generation changes the meaning of the counter and can affect latency. Compare traditionally rendered performance first, then treat generated frames as a separate mode.
Ignoring the 1% lows
A high average can hide stutter. Where low-frame data is available, record it alongside the average and pay attention to the scenes where it falls.
Assuming every Steam Deck game is identical on Steam Machine
Valve’s compatibility guidance is encouraging, but anti-cheat, launchers, peripherals and non-Steam software can still differ. Verify your must-play list.
Comparing sticker prices without accessories
Include the controller and storage tier you actually want for Steam Machine. Include the complete component list and living-room accessories for a PC.

Is 1440p on a 65-inch 4K TV sensible?
Readers often ask whether 1440p on a large 4K television is a good compromise. The answer depends on viewing distance, the television’s scaling quality and your tolerance for softer detail. A 1440p input can reduce rendering load compared with 4K, but it does not make Steam Machine a native-1440p Ultra system in every game. The reader discussion phrasing “Is 1440p on a 65-inch 4K TV a good idea?” appears in this Reddit thread; it is an anecdotal question, not a population study. Test your own seating distance and television scaling before treating the display size as a performance decision.
Final decision rule
Buy the conventional gaming PC when your non-negotiable requirement is the strongest 1440p performance for the money, broad software support or a practical upgrade path. Buy Steam Machine when the value of a compact, quiet, SteamOS living-room appliance outweighs the cost of tuning demanding games and accepting less performance per dollar. Whichever route you take, compare complete systems under identical rendering conditions rather than relying on a single resolution label or FPS number.
