Buy a conventional Windows gaming PC if dependable support and predictable performance matter most. Electronic Arts lists 64-bit Windows 10/11 as the target platform for STAR WARS Zero Company, with 32 GB of memory and an RTX 3080 or RX 7800 XT recommended for 1440p at 60 frames per second on High settings. A Steam Machine is the more attractive living-room appliance—compact, controller-focused and built around SteamOS—but its Linux/Proton route is not officially validated for this game. EA’s launch information says Zero Company was not Steam Deck Verified, and no Steam Machine benchmark or rating has been published.
The practical choice is therefore simple: choose Windows hardware that meets EA’s recommended specification for the lowest risk; choose Steam Machine only if couch convenience outweighs uncertain compatibility and you are comfortable troubleshooting.

What you are choosing
STAR WARS Zero Company is a single-player, turn-based tactics game set during the twilight of the Clone Wars. It launched on August 27, 2026 for PC through the EA app, Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It does not require online multiplayer or co-op, so the hardware decision is about running the campaign reliably, not maintaining a competitive online connection.
A Windows gaming PC runs the PC edition on the operating system EA documents. A Steam Machine is a small-form-factor computer running SteamOS 3, Valve’s Arch-based Linux distribution. Windows games on SteamOS generally run through Proton, a compatibility layer that translates Windows calls for Linux. Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat described Proton as “the secret sauce.” That technology can make a large library playable, but compatibility is game-specific and can change with updates.

Official PC requirements for Zero Company
EA publishes two performance targets. Minimum specifications are intended for 1920×1080 at 30 FPS on Low; they are not a promise of perfectly smooth play. EA specifically warns that users near the minimum may need to reduce resolution or graphics settings.
| Target | Operating system | Processor | Memory | Graphics | API and storage | EA’s target |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 | Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X | 16 GB RAM | GeForce GTX 1080, Radeon RX 5600 XT or Intel Arc B580 | DirectX 12; 50 GB | 1920×1080, 30 FPS, Low |
| Recommended | 64-bit Windows 10 or 11; Windows 11 recommended | Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X | 32 GB RAM | GeForce RTX 3080 or Radeon RX 7800 XT | DirectX 12; 50 GB | 2560×1440, 60 FPS, High |
These are PC requirements, not Steam Machine requirements. Intel Arc owners should enable Resizable BAR for better FPS performance. The 50 GB figure is the game’s stated storage requirement; leave additional free space for the operating system, shader caches and updates.
Steam Machine hardware versus EA’s targets
Released-unit specifications listed by PC Gamer describe a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 processor with six cores and 12 threads, boosting to 4.8 GHz, paired with a semi-custom RDNA 3 graphics processor offering 28 compute units, up to 2.45 GHz and 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM. The machine has 16 GB of DDR5 system memory. Storage options are 512 GB or 2 TB. Connectivity includes DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth, Ethernet and microSD expansion.
On paper, the six-core Zen 4 CPU is newer than EA’s minimum processors, and 16 GB of RAM matches the minimum memory class. The RDNA 3 GPU is also a newer architecture than the listed Radeon RX 5600 XT. That is a comparison of published specifications, not a test result: EA has not reported a Steam Machine frame-rate result for Zero Company.
The recommended target is a different matter. EA asks for 32 GB of RAM and an RTX 3080 or RX 7800 XT for 1440p/60 on High. Steam Machine’s 16 GB system memory and 8 GB of dedicated VRAM are below that recommended memory configuration, and its custom GPU cannot be assumed to equal either recommended desktop card. Expecting the recommended target without independent testing would be unjustified.
| Consideration | Steam Machine | Windows gaming PC meeting EA recommended tier |
|---|---|---|
| CPU and memory | 6-core/12-thread Zen 4; 16 GB DDR5 | Core i7-10700K or Ryzen 7 3700X; 32 GB RAM |
| GPU and VRAM | Custom RDNA 3; 28 compute units; 8 GB GDDR6 | RTX 3080 or RX 7800 XT; capacity and performance class specified by EA |
| Operating system | SteamOS 3 with Proton for Windows games | 64-bit Windows 10/11, with Windows 11 recommended |
| Storage choices | 512 GB or 2 TB; microSD expansion | Depends on the desktop or prebuilt; internal replacement options are broad |
| Official Zero Company support | No Steam Machine benchmark or game-specific certification; not Steam Deck Verified at launch | Matches EA’s documented platform and troubleshooting path |
| Living-room features | Small enclosure, fast suspend/resume, cloud saves and integrated Steam controller support | Requires a case, display connection and your own controller or keyboard setup |
Why Windows is the safer choice
It is the documented platform
EA’s requirements, DirectX 12 guidance and diagnostic advice are written for Windows 10/11. If the game fails to start, displays an error or performs poorly, you can compare your system directly with the published CPU, GPU, memory and driver expectations. Windows also avoids an extra translation layer between the game’s Windows build and the operating system.
You have more performance headroom
A desktop configured with 32 GB of RAM and an RTX 3080 or RX 7800 XT gives you the hardware class EA associates with 1440p/60 High. More headroom helps when a later patch increases shader or memory demands, when you use a high-resolution texture option, or when background applications consume memory. It does not guarantee every scene will hold exactly 60 FPS, but it is the closest documented route to that target.

Upgrades and repairs are straightforward
A conventional desktop normally lets you replace the graphics card, add memory, install a larger NVMe drive, change the power supply and improve cooling independently. Those options matter for a 50 GB game that may receive substantial updates. Steam Machine offers two storage capacities and microSD expansion, but its semi-custom CPU and GPU are not equivalent to a desktop parts list, and internal upgrade details are more limited.
Why a Steam Machine can still make sense
It is designed for the television
Steam Machine is a compact appliance rather than a conventional tower. Valve describes it as roughly six times more powerful than Steam Deck, with fast suspend/resume and cloud saves. Those features reduce the friction of switching between a campaign and other living-room activities. HDMI 2.0 connects to a television, while DisplayPort 1.4 supports a compatible monitor.
The controller experience is built in
Bundles may include a Steam Controller or omit it. The controller combines twin sticks, trackpads, gyro controls and rear grip buttons, with a battery rating of more than 35 hours. Trackpads and gyro aiming are not essential for a turn-based tactics game, but they can make menus and cursor movement more comfortable from a sofa. Treat the controller as an optional accessory rather than evidence that Zero Company has a special console interface.
SteamOS keeps the interface simple
SteamOS provides a console-like library, suspend/resume behavior and cloud-save integration. If the game launches and renders correctly through Proton, that convenience can outweigh the extra compatibility uncertainty for a player who values a quiet, small system over maximum upgradeability.
SteamOS and Proton: what is known and unknown
Zero Company is Steam-native and does not require the EA app according to its launch FAQ. That removes one possible launcher complication on SteamOS. However, the same launch information says the game was not Steam Deck Verified at launch. Steam Deck verification is not identical to a Steam Machine certification, but it is an important signal because both rely on SteamOS and Proton compatibility work.
There is no official Steam Machine-specific benchmark, SteamOS rating or verified badge for this title in the available authoritative information. The responsible conclusion is conditional: the hardware appears capable of meeting the minimum class on paper, but smooth performance, controller behavior, video playback, anti-cheat behavior and suspend/resume cannot be promised. Proton updates may improve compatibility, while a game patch can introduce a new problem.
How to choose by your target resolution
1080p at 30 FPS on Low
A Windows system at or above the minimum specification is the least expensive documented route. Steam Machine’s newer CPU and GPU architecture suggest that it could be a plausible candidate for this target, but that remains an inference. If you choose Steam Machine, buy from a seller with a return policy that covers software compatibility and test the game immediately.

1080p at higher settings
EA does not publish a separate 1080p High target. Do not treat the minimum table as a guarantee for High settings; the minimum target is explicitly Low at 30 FPS. A Windows PC with hardware between the minimum and recommended tiers may work well, but exact frame rates depend on settings, patches and the rest of the system.
1440p at 60 FPS on High
Use a Windows PC with at least the recommended CPU, 32 GB of RAM and an RTX 3080 or RX 7800 XT class GPU. Steam Machine’s specification is materially below EA’s stated memory and graphics recommendation, and no test establishes that it reaches this target. A 1440p/60 monitor or television is a sensible display category, but no particular panel can guarantee a frame rate.
4K television play
Neither EA’s minimum nor recommended target promises 4K. A 4K TV can accept the signal, but you may need to render at a lower internal resolution or reduce settings. Choose this display path for viewing distance and convenience, not as proof that the machine will render the game natively at 4K.
Setup steps for a Windows gaming PC
- Confirm the platform. Install 64-bit Windows 10 or 11; Windows 11 is EA’s recommended edition.
- Check the components. Verify the CPU, GPU, 16 or 32 GB of RAM and at least 50 GB of free storage against the table above. For the 1440p/60 High target, use the recommended tier rather than the minimum.
- Update graphics drivers and Windows. Install the current driver supplied for your GPU and apply pending Windows updates before the first launch. Intel Arc users should turn on Resizable BAR in the motherboard firmware and confirm it is active in the driver panel.
- Install from your chosen PC storefront. The game is available through the EA app, Steam and the Epic Games Store. Keep the launcher and game on a drive with more free space than the 50 GB requirement.
- Set the display first. Select the television or monitor’s native resolution, then begin with the preset that matches your hardware. If you are near minimum, start at 1080p Low; if you meet recommended, begin at 1440p High.
- Measure before changing everything. Play a representative mission for several minutes. If frame pacing is uneven, lower shadows, effects or resolution one step at a time rather than changing every option at once.
Setup and troubleshooting on Steam Machine
- Install the Steam version. The launch FAQ identifies the game as Steam-native without the EA app. Keep SteamOS fully updated before installing the game.
- Check compatibility information. Look at the game’s current Steam compatibility notes and community reports. The absence of a Steam Deck Verified badge at launch means you should treat any result as provisional.
- Try the default Proton choice first. Do not change several Proton versions simultaneously. If the game does not launch, test a newer stable Proton release, then a known compatibility release if Steam offers one.
- Use conservative graphics settings. Start at 1080p or the television’s performance-oriented mode. Reduce resolution, shadows and effects before assuming the hardware is defective.
- Test the entire play loop. Launch a mission, save, suspend, resume and reload. Verify controller mapping, cut-scene playback, audio and cloud-save synchronization, not just whether the title reaches its menu.
- Keep a recovery path. If an update breaks the game, record the Proton version and graphics settings that worked previously, then roll back to the last functional option when Steam permits it. If you need certainty rather than experimentation, use the return policy or install the Windows version on another PC.
Common problems and what they mean
The game will not start
On Windows, verify that the installation is complete, drivers are current and the system meets the operating-system requirement. On SteamOS, a launch failure can be a Proton compatibility issue rather than inadequate raw hardware. Try the default and a current stable Proton version separately, and disable unusual launch options before troubleshooting further.
Performance is below expectation
Confirm the selected resolution and preset first. Minimum hardware is associated with 1080p/30 Low, while 1440p/60 High is associated with the recommended tier. Background applications, thermal limits and insufficient free storage can also affect consistency. On Intel Arc systems, check Resizable BAR before replacing hardware.
Recommended Free Tools
Memory warnings or stutter
Sixteen gigabytes is the minimum class, not the recommended configuration. Close browsers and overlays, then consider a 32 GB Windows build if you want the recommended target. Steam Machine has 16 GB by design, so reducing background load and graphics settings is more realistic than expecting a memory upgrade to transform it into the recommended tier.
Controller or suspend problems
Steam Machine’s controller and suspend features are system-level conveniences, not guarantees for every game. Test a complete save-and-resume cycle before relying on suspend during a long campaign. On Windows, a wired or Bluetooth controller may require separate pairing and button mapping.

Price, storage and ownership trade-offs
PC Gamer reviewed a 2 TB Steam Machine without a controller at $1,349 and a controller bundle at $1,428. Those are review-period prices, not permanent or universal prices; availability, taxes, region and later revisions can change the total. Verify the current price and whether a controller is included before buying.
The 512 GB model leaves less room after the operating system and other games are installed, while the 2 TB model reduces the need for expansion. A microSD card can add capacity, but internal storage normally offers the most predictable load behavior. Desktop PCs provide more choices: you can start with a smaller SSD and replace it later, or install multiple drives, subject to the motherboard and case.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Budget for the complete setup rather than the computer alone. A living-room Steam Machine may need a television, HDMI cable and optional controller. A desktop may need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, controller, speakers and possibly a stronger power supply or cooling solution. No display purchase can guarantee a particular frame rate; match the display’s resolution and refresh rate to the performance target you actually expect.
A decision checklist
- Choose Windows PC if you want the platform EA officially documents, the 1440p/60 High target, straightforward driver diagnostics, or broad future upgrade options.
- Choose Steam Machine if a compact television setup, suspend/resume, cloud saves and Steam controller integration are more important than certification and maximum headroom.
- Do not choose solely on architecture names. Newer Zen 4 and RDNA 3 parts suggest minimum-tier capability on paper, but they do not substitute for a published game benchmark.
- Do not pay for a recommended display before selecting hardware. Decide whether your real target is 1080p/30 Low or 1440p/60 High, then size the PC and screen accordingly.
- Protect yourself with a return window. This is especially important for Steam Machine because no official game-specific SteamOS result establishes how Zero Company behaves.
Verdict
For most buyers, a Windows gaming PC is the correct purchase for STAR WARS Zero Company. Build or buy one around EA’s recommended 32 GB RAM and RTX 3080/RX 7800 XT class for the documented 1440p/60 High target, and you retain the clearest support and upgrade path. Steam Machine is a reasonable enthusiast choice for a couch-first setup: its Zen 4 CPU, RDNA 3 GPU, compact SteamOS interface and optional controller make it appealing, and its specifications appear capable of the minimum class. But because the game was not Steam Deck Verified at launch and has no Steam Machine benchmark, buy it only with realistic settings expectations and a return option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Zero Company require an internet connection or online multiplayer subscription?
It is a single-player game and does not require online multiplayer or co-op. Storefront account, launcher and activation behavior can still depend on the PC platform you use.
Is Steam Machine officially supported for Zero Company?
No game-specific Steam Machine benchmark, SteamOS rating or Steam Deck Verified badge was published in the cited launch information. Compatibility through Proton may work, but it is not an established guarantee.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan Steam Machine deliver 1440p at 60 FPS on High?
There is no authoritative test establishing that result. Its 16 GB of RAM and custom 8 GB-VRAM RDNA 3 GPU are below EA’s recommended 32 GB and RTX 3080/RX 7800 XT class on paper, so a Windows PC is the safer choice for that target.
How much storage should I reserve?
EA lists 50 GB for the game. Reserve additional space for SteamOS or Windows, updates, shader caches and other games; the 2 TB Steam Machine model gives substantially more working room than the 512 GB model.
