Open the game’s Steam Store page and read its Steam Machine, SteamOS, and Deck compatibility panel. Then compare the game’s CPU, GPU, memory, storage, and operating-system requirements with your particular Steam Machine. If the title is unrated or carries a warning, check recent ProtonDB reports and investigate anti-cheat, launchers, codecs, and other middleware before installing. A badge predicts compatibility conditions; it does not guarantee one frame rate on every hardware configuration.
What “compatible” means on a Steam Machine
A Steam Machine runs SteamOS, Valve’s Linux-based operating system. Games with a native Linux build can run directly on that platform. Windows games without a Linux version generally run through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer. Proton translates the Windows game’s calls into interfaces that Linux can use, while Steam handles installation, updates, controller configuration, and launching.

Valve says the vast majority of the Steam library runs on SteamOS through Proton and reported support for more than 18,000 Steam titles on its SteamOS page in 2025. That is a library-wide count, not a promise that every listed game has identical performance, complete feature support, or a flawless first launch. Valve lists Steam Machine among the devices officially powered by SteamOS, and Steamworks documentation says that games without native Linux builds on Machine are run through Proton.

How to read Steam’s compatibility badges
Steam’s review system is an experience forecast. Open the game’s Store page and expand the Steam Machine, SteamOS, or Deck compatibility details to see the conditions behind the badge. Valve’s review can include Proton-specific launch, input, interface, or performance problems.

| Badge or status | What it tells you | What you still need to check |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | Valve’s published criteria are met for the reviewed SteamOS or Steam Machine experience. | Your machine’s CPU and GPU, display resolution, settings, updates, and any game-specific performance target. |
| Playable | The game can work, but a setting change, on-screen keyboard, manual launcher interaction, small text, or another caveat may be involved. | Whether the adjustment is acceptable to you and whether it affects multiplayer, video playback, or saved games. |
| Unsupported | Valve found a blocking issue under its review criteria, such as a launch failure, essential feature problem, or incompatible middleware. | Whether a later game, Proton, or anti-cheat update has changed the situation; community reports can provide newer evidence but are not a guarantee. |
| Unrated or unknown | Valve has not supplied a dependable current verdict for that title. | Recent ProtonDB reports, the developer’s anti-cheat and launcher configuration, and your own test plan. |
Steam Support directs users to the compatibility section to see which requirements a title does not meet. Treat that explanation as more useful than the color of the badge alone: a “Playable” result caused by a minor text-size issue is a different purchase decision from one caused by a fragile launcher or broken online mode.
Step-by-step: check a game before installing it
1. Open the game’s Store page
- In the Steam client, search for the title and open its Store page.
- Locate the Steam Machine, SteamOS, or Deck compatibility panel near the purchase and system-information area.
- Open the detailed result rather than relying only on the short badge. Note any warnings about controller input, text legibility, launchers, videos, or required settings.
If the game has separate editions, inspect the exact edition you intend to install. Deluxe bundles, test branches, and multiplayer editions can include different launchers or downloadable components.
2. Classify the result as a launch-risk level
Use Verified as the lowest-risk starting point, not as a performance promise. Playable means you should read the listed adjustment and decide whether you are comfortable making it each time. For Unsupported and unrated games, do not assume that a purchase will be recoverable simply because another Windows PC can run it.

Valve explicitly advises checking hardware requirements in addition to operating-system compatibility. Record the developer’s minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, and any stated resolution or graphics target. Compare those values with the specifications of your exact Steam Machine model.

- Entalva Handheld Steam Cleaner
| Requirement | How to compare it | Warning signs |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Compare the game’s listed processor class and core or thread requirement with the machine’s processor. Consider whether the title is simulation-heavy or has large multiplayer worlds. | The machine only meets the minimum, or the game is known to become CPU-limited at its target frame rate. |
| GPU | Compare the discrete or integrated graphics model, available video memory, and feature level with the game’s minimum and recommended GPU. | The requirement names a substantially faster GPU, a newer graphics feature, or more video memory than your machine provides. |
| Memory | Check installed system RAM against both the game and the amount reserved by SteamOS and background services. | The machine barely reaches the minimum, causing stutter when the game, shader cache, and other services compete for memory. |
| Storage | Allow the listed install size plus room for updates, shader caches, compatibility files, and temporary downloads. | The drive is nearly full; an apparently compatible game may fail during installation or patching. |
| Operating system | Confirm that the title’s SteamOS result is current. A Windows-only listing is not automatically disqualified because Proton may run it. | The game depends on a Windows service, kernel-level component, unsupported anti-cheat, or proprietary video path. |
| Resolution and settings | Match the game’s stated target to the resolution of your display and the quality preset you want to use. | A requirement is expressed only for a low resolution or reduced preset while you expect a higher-resolution television or monitor output. |
When a game lists only “minimum” and “recommended,” those labels do not define a guaranteed frame rate. They describe the developer’s test assumptions, which may differ from Steam Machine hardware, SteamOS updates, and Proton versions.
4. Investigate multiplayer and middleware
Check whether the title uses third-party anti-cheat, a separate account system, a launcher, digital-rights-management software, or video codecs. Valve warns that some anti-cheat providers and media codecs remain unsupported. A game can therefore launch to a menu yet fail when it connects to a protected server, opens a launcher, plays a pre-rendered cutscene, or decodes an in-game video.
- Anti-cheat: verify that the developer has enabled its Linux or Proton support for the game’s current multiplayer build. An anti-cheat system can work in one title and block another from the same publisher.
- Launchers: determine whether the launcher accepts controller input, scales correctly on your display, and remains logged in after an update.
- Codecs and videos: look for reports of missing cutscenes, black screens, or silent dialogue. These failures may not appear until well after the opening menu.
- DRM and account checks: a title may require an online activation or a service that is not available in Proton even when the core game renders correctly.
5. Check ProtonDB when Valve has no clear answer
ProtonDB is a crowdsourced database of Linux and Steam Deck reports. Use it as supplementary community evidence, especially for unrated games or a badge that does not explain a problem. Read several recent reports for the exact game version and look for:

- whether a workaround survives a restart, an update, and a fresh installation.
Give more weight to multiple recent reports that agree on the same behavior than to a single old success report. Community entries are observations from particular systems, not Valve certifications or guarantees for your Steam Machine.

How to test an unrated or questionable game safely
If you decide to try a game without a dependable badge, make the first session a controlled test. Install it while you still have enough storage for shader caches and updates, then test the complete path that matters to you: first launch, settings menu, controller input, a representative save, a video sequence, and online matchmaking if multiplayer is important.
- Record the default Proton or Steam Play tool shown in the game’s properties.
- Launch with your intended display resolution and controller setup rather than testing only at a temporary low setting.
- Reach a normal gameplay area, not just the title screen. Check loading, audio, subtitles, videos, and save creation.
- If the game is multiplayer, sign in and complete a real server connection. A local menu test cannot establish anti-cheat compatibility.
- Note crashes, missing textures, shader stutter, or input failures and compare them with recent community reports before changing several variables at once.
Keep your purchase and refund decisions within Steam’s applicable policy and regional rules. Do not assume that a workaround found in a community post will remain valid after the game or Proton updates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Changing the Proton version
Steam Support documents a per-game compatibility-tool override. Use it when reports identify a specific Proton release as more reliable than the default.
- Open Library and select the game.
- Open the game’s Properties.
- Select Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose the Proton version recommended by current reports, then close the dialog and launch the game.
Write down the original setting before changing it. If the new version causes a crash, missing video, worse performance, or an update loop, return to Properties → Compatibility and restore the previous selection. Change one variable at a time; switching Proton, launch options, and graphics settings simultaneously makes the result difficult to diagnose.

Common failure patterns and what to check
The game does not launch
- Re-read the Store-page compatibility note for a known launcher or DRM issue.
- Check recent ProtonDB entries for a required Proton version or launch option.
- Verify that the installation completed and that the Steam Machine has free space for shader and update files.
- Restore the previously working Proton selection if a recent override caused the failure.
The game launches but multiplayer is unavailable
- Look specifically for anti-cheat reports rather than general “game starts” reports.
- Confirm that the game and its anti-cheat component are fully updated.
- Test a single-player session separately; successful local play does not prove protected online play works.
Videos are missing or the screen is black
- Check whether the title uses codecs that Valve identifies as unsupported.
- Search recent reports for cutscene or launcher symptoms, not only frame-rate comments.
- Do not classify the game as fully working merely because gameplay appears after skipping a video.
Performance is below expectations
- Compare the machine’s GPU and CPU with the game’s recommended requirements, not only its minimum.
- Test at the resolution and preset you actually plan to use.
- Determine whether the limitation is CPU- or GPU-bound before lowering settings; reducing visual quality cannot fix every processor bottleneck.
- Allow shader compilation and updates to finish before judging repeated stutter, then compare with reports from similar hardware.
Comparing two games for Steam Machine use
When choosing between titles, compare more than their badges. The following framework keeps the decision focused on the experience you want.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Launch reliability | Is the game Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or unrated? What exact issue explains the status? |
| Input and interface | Does the game support a controller throughout setup, launchers, menus, and gameplay? Is text readable at your display distance? |
| Middleware | Are anti-cheat, third-party launchers, DRM, codecs, and video playback known to work? |
| Performance target | What resolution, frame-rate target, and graphics preset are realistic on the machine’s CPU and GPU? |
| Maintenance burden | Will you need a particular Proton release, launch option, manual login, or workaround after updates? |
| Evidence quality | Is the conclusion based on Valve’s current review, several recent ProtonDB reports, or one old anecdote? |
A game with a Playable badge and a simple one-time text-size adjustment may be a better living-room choice than an unrated game that requires a fragile launcher, even if both eventually reach gameplay. Conversely, a technically Unsupported game may become usable after a developer fixes its anti-cheat configuration; check the date of every report before making a final decision.
What the badges cannot promise
Valve does not publish a universal Steam Machine frame-rate guarantee in the compatibility material. Actual performance varies with the game’s requirements, resolution, graphics settings, updates, drivers, Proton version, and the particular issue behind a Playable or Unsupported result. A Verified label should give you confidence that the reviewed experience meets Valve’s criteria, but it should not be read as “runs at a fixed frame rate on every Steam Machine.”
The most reliable decision combines three kinds of evidence: Valve’s current compatibility explanation, the game’s own hardware requirements, and recent reports from hardware and settings close to yours. If those sources disagree, prioritize the specific blocker—usually anti-cheat, a launcher, a codec, or a hardware shortfall—over the headline badge.
