What is Tornado?
Tornado is a mainline steam locomotive completed in 2008, according to the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust. The Trust describes it as the first mainline steam locomotive built in the UK since 1960, while a statistic elsewhere on its page uses 1961 as the comparison year. Its wording is therefore inconsistent on that specific milestone, although both references describe Tornado as a modern-built locomotive rather than a surviving original.
The Trust says Tornado reached 100 mph on a test train in 2017. That is a preservation-era test-train figure, not an advertised speed for this excursion. The Trust’s current webpage also gives 140,000 miles travelled and 150 project volunteers; it does not date those two figures, which should be read as Trust-published figures rather than independently audited totals. The Trust’s Tornado overview provides its background and displayed statistics.
