Steam Link is better when you already own a gaming PC that can run Steam games. GeForce NOW is better when you want NVIDIA to provide the gaming computer in the cloud. That difference determines nearly everything else: which games you can play, whether you need your PC switched on, how you pay, what happens when you travel, and how sensitive your session is to distance and network quality.
Neither service is a universal winner. Check the exact game, your phone’s operating system, controller support, Wi-Fi or mobile-data limits, and GeForce NOW availability in your country before choosing.

The fundamental difference: your PC versus NVIDIA’s cloud
How Steam Link works
Steam Link is the phone endpoint for Steam Remote Play. A computer you can access runs Steam and launches the game. That computer encodes the game’s video and audio, sends the stream to your phone, and receives your controller or touch input in real time. Steam describes this as video and audio traveling from the gaming PC while remote input travels back over a custom low-latency network protocol. The phone is therefore a display and control device, not the machine rendering the game.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You must have access to a suitable computer running Steam, and that computer must be available when you want to play. It can be on your home network or reached remotely, but your experience depends on both the connection to the PC and the PC’s ability to run the game. Steam says Remote Play can send games to phones, tablets, televisions, VR devices, or another PC, with controls optimized for hundreds of popular titles. Individual games can still have awkward menus, anti-cheat restrictions, launchers, or control schemes that are poorly suited to a small screen.

How GeForce NOW works
GeForce NOW runs supported games on NVIDIA’s remote servers and streams the result to your phone. You connect eligible store accounts, choose a game in the GeForce NOW catalog, and sign in to the relevant publisher or store account when prompted. NVIDIA lists Steam, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, EA app, GOG, Epic Games Store, and Xbox among the supported stores. A connected store does not make every title in that store playable: GeForce NOW has a separate, changing catalog, and availability can differ by country.
This model removes the need for a personal gaming PC, but it adds service conditions. The game must be listed for your region, your membership tier must provide the relevant access, and NVIDIA’s servers must be reachable with acceptable latency. Free-to-play games may be available, while other titles generally require that you own the game through a supported store. Confirm the exact title in NVIDIA’s catalog before buying or subscribing.
NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW FAQ lists Free, Performance, and Ultimate memberships and day passes. Features, queues, availability, and prices can change by region, so use the membership page shown for your location rather than relying on an old price quoted elsewhere.
Which service fits your situation?
| Your situation | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You own a gaming PC with Steam installed and want to reach its library on a phone. | Steam Link | The PC runs the game and streams its audio and video to the phone. |
| You do not want to maintain or leave a personal gaming PC available. | GeForce NOW | NVIDIA supplies cloud-hosted hardware, subject to catalog, region, and membership rules. |
| You have one particular game in mind. | Check both options first. | Steam Link can stream a game your PC runs; GeForce NOW can stream only a supported catalog title. |
| You use an iPhone or iPad. | Either may work, with different setup limits. | GeForce NOW gameplay in Safari requires a gamepad; Steam Link requires a compatible app and host PC. |
| You expect to play mainly on cellular data. | Choose only after checking your allowance. | NVIDIA warns that phone streaming can consume mobile data quickly, and either service can use substantial bandwidth. |
The decisive questions are where the game runs, whether the game is available through the library or catalog you can access, whether your phone and controller are supported, and whether your connection is fast and consistent enough.
Steam Link: requirements and setup
What you need
- A computer that can run the game through Steam.
- Steam installed and signed in on that computer.
- The Steam Link app on a supported Android or Apple device. Steam’s general mobile-app page lists iOS 15.1 and Android 7.0 for the Steam Mobile app, but that is not a stated minimum for Steam Link; verify the current Steam Link listing for your phone before installation. See Steam mobile apps.
- A controller, touch-control-compatible game, or another input method that the game supports.
- A network path between the phone and the host PC. Same-network play is usually the simplest starting arrangement; remote play requires the PC and home network to remain reachable.
Initial pairing procedure
- Install Steam Link from your phone’s official app store.
- On the computer, open Steam and sign in to the account that owns the games.
- Open Steam Link and let it search for computers running Steam. Select the computer you intend to use.
- Enter the pairing PIN shown on the phone into Steam when requested.
- Run the connection test. If Steam Link offers a performance or streaming-quality setting, begin with the balanced or automatic choice rather than maximum resolution.
- Pair a Bluetooth or wired-compatible controller, or test the game’s on-screen controls if it supports them.
- Choose a game from the Steam library and start it. Keep the computer awake, connected, and able to launch the game for the duration of the session.
What can limit Steam Link
Steam Link does not turn a low-powered office computer into a gaming machine. The host PC still needs the graphics performance, storage, drivers, and game installation required by the title. If the host is asleep, shut down, offline, blocked by a router, or busy with another demanding task, the phone cannot compensate.

Remote input also has to pass through the host’s game and launcher. Games designed for keyboard and mouse may be uncomfortable with a phone controller. Some titles display text or anti-cheat dialogs that are difficult to operate remotely. Test the exact game before planning a long trip around it.
GeForce NOW: requirements and setup
Phone and operating-system requirements
NVIDIA’s system requirements, accessed October 13, 2026, list the following baseline requirements for phones and tablets:
| Device | Published requirement |
|---|---|
| Android phone or tablet | Android 7.0 or later, 1 GB available memory, and OpenGL ES 2.0 or higher. |
| iPhone or iPad | iOS or iPadOS 15.4 or later. |
These are service requirements, not a guarantee that every model will deliver the same image quality or latency. Keep the operating system and GeForce NOW app or browser current, and check the current listing if your phone is unusually old or uses a manufacturer-specific Android build.
Starting a session
- Check NVIDIA’s current catalog for the exact game and your country.
- Create or sign in to a GeForce NOW account and choose an available membership or day-pass option. Terms and offerings vary by region.
- Link the store account that owns the game, when ownership is required. Supported-store access does not imply universal game support.
- On Android, install and open the GeForce NOW app. On iPhone or iPad, follow NVIDIA’s current Safari-based access instructions and add the web app if offered.
- Connect a compatible gamepad before launching. On iPhone and iPad, NVIDIA states that you need a gamepad to play games; keyboard and mouse input in Safari is limited to menu navigation and text entry.
- Search for the title, select Play, and complete any store or publisher sign-in shown by the service.
- If the stream is unstable, lower the in-session resolution or frame-rate target before assuming the phone is incapable.
Membership is part of the choice
GeForce NOW’s Free, Performance, Ultimate, and day-pass offerings can differ in session access, queue treatment, hardware, resolution, frame rate, and other features. The material available for this comparison does not establish a stable worldwide price. Check the current NVIDIA membership page for your country and read whether a feature is recurring, time-limited, or restricted to a particular tier before paying.
Steam Link has no separate cloud-streaming membership: you use the Steam library and hardware you already have. You may still need to buy the game, upgrade the host PC, or pay for a better home or mobile connection.
Network speed, latency, and data use
GeForce NOW’s published thresholds
NVIDIA publishes these phone-streaming targets in its current system requirements:

| Phone platform and target | Minimum listed bandwidth | Additional condition |
|---|---|---|
| Android, HD up to 60 frames per second | 15 Mbps | Published threshold; actual smoothness still depends on latency, stability, and Wi-Fi conditions. |
| Android, Full HD at 60 frames per second | 25 Mbps | Published threshold. |
| Android, Quad HD at 120 frames per second | 35 Mbps | Requires Ultimate membership and a compatible device. |
| iPhone or iPad, HD up to 60 frames per second | 15 Mbps | Published threshold. |
| iPhone or iPad, Full HD at 60 frames per second | 25 Mbps | Published threshold. |
NVIDIA also says latency to an NVIDIA data center should be below 80 milliseconds. It recommends a wired connection where possible or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These figures are requirements and recommendations, not a promise that a connection at exactly the threshold will feel responsive: interference, packet loss, congestion, routing, and distance can still cause blur, hitching, or delayed controls.
Making a phone connection more reliable
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi close enough to the router for a strong signal, or use a wired network connection for the host side when possible.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video streams, and console updates on the same network.
- Run a speed and latency test from the location where you will actually play, not only beside the router.
- Keep the phone charged and remove a thick case if heat causes performance or charging problems.
- On cellular data, check your plan’s allowance and monitor usage. NVIDIA explicitly warns that phone streaming may use data quickly; it does not publish one universal gigabytes-per-hour figure that applies to every resolution and game.
Steam Link has no single published phone bandwidth table in the material available here. Its practical ceiling is set by the host PC, the network between host and phone, and the streaming quality selected in Steam. A fast internet connection cannot fix a host computer that is overloaded, and a powerful host cannot overcome severe packet loss.
Controllers and phone accessories
Android
NVIDIA says a Bluetooth gamepad is strongly recommended for Android. Its examples include the NVIDIA SHIELD controller, Razer Kishi V2, SteelSeries Stratus Duo, and Backbone One. The Android app includes an on-screen virtual gamepad, but NVIDIA does not recommend relying on it for long-term gameplay. Touch controls can be acceptable for a short test or a simple title, yet physical sticks and buttons are substantially easier for games designed around a conventional controller.
iPhone and iPad
NVIDIA states: “You will need to use a gamepad to play games on your iPhone or iPad.” In Safari, keyboard and mouse input is limited to menu navigation and text entry, so they are not a substitute for a gamepad during normal play. Steam Link’s input options depend on the game and the host configuration, but a physical controller remains the safer choice for action, racing, and other controller-oriented games.
Choosing a mobile gamepad or clip
A Bluetooth mobile gamepad is the most relevant accessory purchase for this comparison. Before ordering, verify the phone’s width, connector or Bluetooth support, operating-system compatibility, and whether the games you play require analog triggers, gyro input, or extra buttons. A gamepad clip that holds a separate controller is optional; it must fit both the controller and the phone, and it adds weight compared with an integrated handheld-style controller. Official examples identify compatible products but do not establish current stock, price, universal fit, or support for every game.
Game ownership and catalog checks
Steam Link library access
Steam Link mirrors the library available to the paired Steam account on the host PC. If the game is installed or can be installed on that computer and runs correctly there, Steam Link can generally transmit it. The service does not remove the game’s PC requirements, account checks, launcher steps, or control limitations.

GeForce NOW catalog access
GeForce NOW is narrower in a different way. You may own a game on a supported store and still be unable to launch it if NVIDIA does not list that title for your region or if the title has been removed or temporarily disabled. Catalog status can change, so search the game immediately before subscribing or buying a day pass. Also check whether the game requires a separate publisher account, an additional launcher, or a gamepad.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A reliable pre-purchase check
- Write down the exact edition and store where you own or plan to buy the game.
- For Steam Link, confirm that your host PC meets the game’s requirements and that Steam can launch it locally.
- For GeForce NOW, search the current catalog while signed in from your country.
- Read the game’s input notes and identify whether a controller is required.
- Test a short session on the phone and network you will actually use before committing to a long membership or trip.
iPhone, iPad, and Android differences
iPhone and iPad
GeForce NOW gameplay on iPhone and iPad uses NVIDIA’s browser route, and the gamepad requirement is strict for gameplay. Safari’s input limitations make a keyboard-and-mouse setup unsuitable for most games. Verify that the device runs iOS or iPadOS 15.4 or later for GeForce NOW, and check the current Steam Link app listing separately if Steam Link is your preferred option.
Android phones and tablets
Android gives GeForce NOW an app-based path and supports NVIDIA’s listed Android targets from Android 7.0, 1 GB available memory, and OpenGL ES 2.0. A Bluetooth controller is recommended, while the virtual gamepad is best treated as a temporary fallback. Android model differences, background battery settings, and manufacturer network optimizations can affect an otherwise compliant device.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The computer or service cannot be found
- For Steam Link, make sure Steam is open and signed in on the host, the computer is awake, and the phone and computer can communicate on the network. Restart Steam Link and Steam after confirming both devices are updated.
- For GeForce NOW, confirm that the service is available in your location, the title is still listed, and the store account is linked to the account containing the game.
Video is blurry or keeps changing quality
Start with the connection rather than the phone display. Move closer to the 5 GHz router, stop competing traffic, and test again. If the network is stable but the stream still fluctuates, select a lower resolution or frame-rate target. On Steam Link, also check whether the host PC is encoding while another application is using the graphics processor.
Controls feel delayed
Latency is the combined delay from the controller to the phone, across the network, through the host or cloud server, and back to the display. Reduce distance to the access point, remove congestion, and use a wired host connection where possible. For GeForce NOW, compare your measured latency with NVIDIA’s below-80-ms guidance to a data center; a bandwidth test alone is not enough.
Recommended Free Tools
The game launches but cannot be played
Check whether the title expects a keyboard and mouse, a gamepad, or a second launcher window. On iPhone and iPad GeForce NOW, Safari’s keyboard and mouse limitations are decisive. On Steam Link, open the game’s controller settings on the host and test the input layout before changing streaming quality.

Mobile data runs out unexpectedly
Disable automatic cellular use where your phone allows it, prefer Wi-Fi for long sessions, and watch the phone’s per-app data counter. Do not assume that a short game session consumes a fixed amount: resolution, frame rate, compression changes, and session length all affect usage.
Cost and ownership trade-offs
Steam Link is usually the lower recurring-cost route for someone who already owns a capable PC and games. There is no separate Steam Link cloud membership in the supplied service description, but the electricity, maintenance, upgrades, game purchases, and network costs remain yours. Remote access also depends on leaving the host ready and reachable.
GeForce NOW trades PC ownership for membership terms. You avoid buying a gaming computer, but you must follow NVIDIA’s current plan rules and may need to own supported games separately. Free access, paid tiers, day passes, queue behavior, session limits, hardware allocation, and maximum quality are not fixed worldwide figures; inspect the offer shown for your region before payment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA practical decision checklist
- Choose Steam Link first if you already have a gaming PC, your target games are in Steam, and you can keep that computer available.
- Choose GeForce NOW first if you do not want a personal gaming PC and your exact games appear in the current regional catalog.
- Test before paying if your connection is shared, your mobile data is limited, or the game has demanding controls.
- Buy a controller before chasing higher resolution if you plan to play on a phone. NVIDIA recommends one for Android and requires one for iPhone and iPad gameplay.
- Recheck availability when traveling because GeForce NOW catalog and service access can vary by country.
Final verdict
For a Steam library backed by a capable computer, Steam Link is the more direct and flexible choice: the game you can run on that PC is the game you can attempt to stream, without depending on a cloud catalog. Its weakness is equally clear—you supply the hardware, keep it reachable, and solve any host-PC or home-network problems.
For phone gaming without a personal gaming PC, GeForce NOW is the better starting point when your game is supported in your region and your phone, controller, and network meet NVIDIA’s requirements. Its trade-offs are catalog restrictions, regional and membership conditions, browser input limits on iPhone and iPad, and potentially heavy data use. Check the exact title and test the actual connection before treating either service as a guaranteed replacement for local play.
