Choose Steam Link if your games already run through Steam and you want the shortest path from a PC library to a phone. Choose Moonlight with Sunshine if you need to add games or desktop applications manually, use a wider range of client platforms, or prefer a host you control separately from Steam. Neither has a proven universal advantage in latency or image quality; the result depends on the host PC, router, Wi-Fi, phone decoder and controller.
Steam Link is Valve’s Remote Play client. Moonlight is a client that pairs with host software such as Sunshine. That difference determines setup effort, flexibility and remote-access options more than the app names do.

Steam Link vs Moonlight at a glance
| Decision point | Steam Link | Moonlight with Sunshine |
|---|---|---|
| Best starting point | A PC that already runs Steam and a Steam-centric library | Users willing to install and manage a separate host for broader app and desktop streaming |
| Host requirement | Steam must be running on the gaming PC | Sunshine (or the older GeForce Experience workflow documented by Moonlight) must run on the PC |
| Adding games and apps | Designed around the Steam Library; non-Steam support is not the primary documented workflow | The setup guide documents adding other applications and a desktop session |
| Phone and TV clients | Android, iOS, Apple TV and Android TV are listed destinations | Android, iOS, Apple TV, Windows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi 4, Amazon Fire tablets and TVs, and ChromeOS are listed clients; some other ports are unofficial |
| Network guidance | Valve’s Android requirements call for a 5 GHz wireless router | Moonlight recommends a mid- to high-end router, 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6, and Ethernet from the PC to the router where possible |
| HDR | No general HDR advantage is established here | HDR10 streaming is documented as beta and requires compatible hardware, software and display |
| Performance verdict | Official documentation does not provide a controlled head-to-head test proving one has lower latency or better image quality | |
Valve describes Steam Link’s underlying Remote Play technology as delivering “real-time video encoding over a custom low-latency network protocol.” That explains the design goal, not a guaranteed latency number for every phone or network. Moonlight’s own FAQ warns that its statistics cannot be used to compare directly with other clients because similarly named measurements may cover different parts of the pipeline.

What the two apps actually do
Steam Link: a Steam Remote Play client
Steam Link receives the video and audio encoded by a computer running Steam, then sends your phone’s touch, controller or keyboard input back to that computer. Valve’s product documentation describes streaming the Steam Library to phones and other supported devices through Remote Play. You do not install a second host server: Steam itself is the host software.

This is the least complicated model when your games, controller profiles and launch shortcuts already live in Steam. The phone app discovers or pairs with the Steam installation, and Steam handles the library presentation and game launch. It is still possible for Steam to launch software that was added to the client, but Steam Link’s documented experience is centered on the Steam Library rather than on a general-purpose desktop list.
See Valve’s current destination list and feature description on the Steam Remote Play page and check the Steam Remote Play support article if your PC or phone behaves differently from the normal flow.
Moonlight: a client paired with a host
Moonlight does not stream anything by itself. It connects to host software. The setup guide documents Sunshine as the recommended modern host and also describes an older GeForce Experience host workflow. The Moonlight FAQ describes Sunshine as fully open source and says it supports more platforms and GPUs than the older host software.

Requirements before you install anything
Steam Link requirements
- An available PC running Steam and a supported operating system.
- An Android phone running Android 5.0 or newer, according to Valve’s Android support page.
- A 5 GHz wireless router for the Android setup Valve documents.
- Steam Link installed on the phone and both devices connected to the same network for the initial setup.
Valve lists Steam Controller, Xbox One S, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or newer, Razer Kishi and Raiju Mobile among supported Android input devices. Other controllers may work, but they are outside that named support list. Confirm the phone’s current Android version and the controller’s connection mode before buying an accessory. The requirements and setup path are on Valve’s Android Steam Link help page.
Moonlight and Sunshine requirements
- A Moonlight client for your phone or another destination.
- Sunshine installed and running on the gaming PC, with a configuration account you protect using a unique password.
- A phone capable of decoding the selected stream smoothly. The guide notes that newer, faster Android devices are more likely to decode without stutter.
- A mid- to high-end wireless router. Moonlight recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 and a wired PC-to-router connection where practical.
The setup guide lists Android 4.1 or newer, iOS 9.3 or newer and tvOS 12 or newer as client minimums. Those are baseline figures, not a promise that every old device will decode a modern high-resolution stream well. App listings and the current Moonlight Setup Guide should take precedence for a specific phone model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to set up Steam Link on an Android phone
- Prepare Steam on the PC. Start Steam, sign in to the account that owns or can launch the game, and leave Steam running. Install pending Steam and graphics-driver updates before troubleshooting the stream.
- Put the PC and phone on the same network. Connect the phone to the router’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi network. If the PC can use Ethernet to that router, use it; this removes one wireless hop from the video path.
- Install Steam Link. Download the official Steam Link app from your phone’s app store, open it and follow its pairing instructions.
- Pair with the computer. The app searches for Steam on the local network. Select the detected PC and enter the PIN shown by Steam Link when prompted.
- Run the connection test. Let the app complete its network check. Treat a warning as a reason to improve placement, interference or the wired connection before changing image-quality settings.
- Connect a controller if needed. Pair a supported Bluetooth controller with the phone or use a compatible phone-mounted controller. Touch controls can launch a game, but games designed for physical controls are usually easier with a controller.
- Launch from the Steam Library. Choose a game in Steam Link. The PC renders and encodes it; the phone displays the stream and returns your input.
If the PC is not discovered, first verify that both devices are on the same local network rather than separate guest and main networks. Then confirm Steam is running and that local firewall rules are not blocking Steam Remote Play. Valve’s suggested network settings provide additional checks.

How to set up Moonlight with Sunshine
- Install Sunshine on the gaming PC. Use the release and operating-system instructions in the Moonlight setup guide. Start the Sunshine service or application after installation.
- Create secure Sunshine credentials. On first launch, open Sunshine’s configuration interface and create a username and a unique, strong password. Anyone who gains access to this interface may be able to add a client that can access the computer.
- Confirm the built-in applications. Sunshine supplies Steam and Remote Desktop entries. Add another launcher, game or application only when you understand the executable and working-directory fields required by your operating system.
- Install Moonlight on the phone. Choose the official client for Android or iOS, then open it while the phone and PC are on the same home network.
- Pair the client. Moonlight displays a pairing PIN. Enter that PIN in Sunshine’s interface when prompted and approve the client. Pairing on the local network first makes later diagnosis much easier.
- Test one application. Start with Steam or a lightweight desktop entry. Check video, audio and controller response before adding high-resolution or HDR settings.
- Add applications deliberately. In Sunshine, add only the programs you intend to launch remotely. Give each a clear name so the Moonlight list remains usable on a phone.
Sunshine’s configuration interface is a control point for computer access, not merely a display preference panel. Do not expose it with an easy-to-guess password. If you later enable remote access, retain the local pairing and password controls rather than relying on an automatic router rule.
Which is better for common phone-streaming situations?
Choose Steam Link for a Steam-first household
Steam Link is the practical choice when the PC is already organized around Steam and you want family members to open a known library from a phone. There is no separate host package to learn, and the setup follows Steam’s existing account and Remote Play relationship. It also makes sense when your target is simply Android, iPhone, Apple TV or Android TV rather than a mixed collection of desktop and embedded clients.
Choose Moonlight with Sunshine for non-Steam apps and the desktop
Moonlight is the better fit when your phone should launch a game outside the Steam Library, an emulator, a launcher or a desktop session. Sunshine’s application list is explicit: you add entries and decide what is available to the client. This is more flexible, but it also introduces another service, credentials and configuration surface to maintain.
Choose based on host hardware, not an Nvidia assumption
Moonlight is not itself an Nvidia-only phone app. Its current recommended host path is Sunshine, and the FAQ says Sunshine supports more platforms and GPUs than the older GeForce Experience host. You still need a PC whose graphics hardware, encoder and operating-system combination Sunshine supports. Check the current host documentation for that exact combination instead of assuming that any integrated or discrete GPU will provide the same codecs or frame rates.

Choose based on the client devices you actually own
If the same gaming PC must feed a Windows laptop, Mac, Linux computer, Raspberry Pi 4, Fire TV device and phone, Moonlight’s documented client coverage may reduce the number of different remote-play systems you manage. If every destination is covered by Steam Link and your games are Steam-based, Steam Link avoids installing Sunshine solely for platform breadth.
Phone operating systems and controller support
| Client or controller question | Documented information | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Android Steam Link | Android 5.0 or newer; Valve names Steam Controller, Xbox One S, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0+, Razer Kishi and Raiju Mobile | Your phone’s Android release, Bluetooth behavior and the current Steam Link app version |
| Moonlight Android | Android 4.1+ listed as a minimum; newer, faster devices are more likely to decode smoothly | Hardware decoding support, target resolution and frame rate |
| Moonlight iOS and tvOS | iOS 9.3+ and tvOS 12+ listed as client minimums; iOS/tvOS 13+ can use Xbox One S and PS4 controllers over Bluetooth | Apple OS version and current controller compatibility |
| Controller vibration | Moonlight documents vibration support for those Xbox One S and PS4 controllers on iOS/tvOS 14 | Whether the app, OS and game expose vibration in your exact connection |
Phone controls are optional for both approaches. A Bluetooth or phone-mounted controller is worthwhile for action games, racing games and anything designed around analog sticks. Pair the controller directly with the phone unless the app’s documentation specifically requires another route. A controller that works with one Android release or iOS version may not have identical behavior after an operating-system update.

Does Moonlight have less input lag?
There is no official, controlled head-to-head benchmark in the cited documentation that proves Moonlight has lower input lag than Steam Link. End-to-end delay includes the game simulation, host capture and encoding, network transport, phone decoding, display scan-out and controller transport. Changing any one of those can outweigh the choice of client.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Moonlight’s FAQ makes an important measurement warning: “These numbers can’t be used to compare to other non-Moonlight clients, since each value may not be measuring the same thing, despite potentially having the same name.” Do not treat an overlay number from one app as a cross-app laboratory result.
Best Value
- Compatible with Android devices and fits mobile devices ranging from 100mm to 170mm in length.
- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light and tactile.
- 2 Pro back paddle buttons
- Profile button. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings. Turbo function.
Improve the path before buying new hardware
- Connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet whenever possible.
- Use the 5 GHz band rather than a congested 2.4 GHz network, while keeping the phone close enough for a stable signal.
- Place the router away from metal obstructions and competing access points; select a clear channel using the router’s own diagnostics.
- Lower stream resolution or frame rate temporarily. If stability returns, the bottleneck may be encoding, decoding or airtime rather than the application.
- Use each app’s performance overlay or connection statistics to identify dropped frames, decode time and network variance. Interpret those figures within that app; do not compare labels as if they were standardized.
Valve specifically calls for a 5 GHz wireless router in its Android requirements, while Moonlight recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 plus a wired host connection. Those recommendations address the complete path, not a claim that either app will always be faster on the same hardware.
HDR: a conditional feature, not a reason to switch by itself
Moonlight’s guide documents HDR10 streaming as beta. On Android it requires Android 7.0 or newer, an HEVC Main10 hardware decoder and an HDR10-compatible display. The guide also notes possible color and scaling artifacts. Therefore, HDR depends on the phone panel, decoder, host encoder, game settings and app version working together.
Test HDR with one game and one display before rebuilding your setup around it. If colors look washed out, clipped or incorrectly scaled, disable HDR and compare a standard dynamic-range stream. The documentation does not establish a general HDR advantage for Moonlight over Steam Link.
Streaming away from home
Local pairing is the safest starting point for either service. For Moonlight with Sunshine, the setup guide documents optional UPnP configuration to forward the required ports and recommends pairing on the home network first. Router behavior, carrier-grade NAT, firewall policy and ISP restrictions determine whether that method works. Automatic forwarding is not a promise of universal remote access.
Apple guidance adds a specific constraint: Moonlight users on iOS or tvOS must pair on the same network. If your phone cannot pair remotely, return to the home network, complete pairing there and then investigate the router and ISP path separately.
Remote streaming exposes more than a video feed: it can provide access to the host applications listed by Sunshine. Use a strong, unique configuration password, keep host software updated and disable remote exposure when you do not need it. Do not publish the Sunshine management interface directly to the internet merely to avoid a pairing step.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The phone cannot find the PC
- Confirm both devices are on the same non-guest network.
- Make sure Steam is running for Steam Link, or Sunshine is running for Moonlight.
- Check whether the PC firewall blocks the host application.
- Restart the host and client after installing updates, then repeat local pairing.
Video stutters while audio remains audible
- Move the phone closer to the 5 GHz access point and stop other high-bandwidth transfers.
- Use Ethernet for the PC and reduce the stream resolution or frame rate.
- Check the phone’s hardware-decoding capability and close background apps.
- Use the performance overlay to distinguish network drops from decode or encode saturation.
Input feels delayed
- Test with the phone on 5 GHz and the PC wired to the router.
- Try the controller paired directly to the phone and compare it with touch input.
- Disable television or phone display processing that adds a picture-mode delay.
- Lower resolution or frame rate temporarily to see whether host encoding is overloaded.
HDR shows wrong colors or scaling
- Verify Android 7.0+, HEVC Main10 decoding and HDR10 display support for Moonlight’s documented Android path.
- Update the phone app, host software and graphics driver.
- Turn HDR off and test standard dynamic range; if that fixes the image, treat HDR compatibility as the fault rather than network speed.
A Sunshine application will not launch
- Open Sunshine’s application entry and verify the executable path and working directory.
- Launch the program locally on the PC first to rule out a missing runtime or permission prompt.
- Use the built-in Steam or Remote Desktop entry as a control test, then add the custom application again with a clear name.
A practical decision checklist
- Use Steam Link when Steam is already your library, you want the fewest moving parts and your destinations are covered by Steam Link.
- Use Moonlight with Sunshine when you need manually added programs, a desktop session or Moonlight clients beyond Steam Link’s documented destinations.
- Do not choose on promised latency alone. No cited official source establishes a universal winner.
- Plan the network first. Prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the phone and Ethernet from the PC to the router.
- Check the exact phone and controller. Minimum operating-system versions and controller features differ by platform.
- Treat HDR as a compatibility project. Moonlight’s Android HDR10 path is beta and hardware-dependent.
- Secure remote access. Sunshine credentials and any router forwarding affect access to the computer, not just game video.
Final recommendation
For a Steam library on a normal home network, start with Steam Link. It aligns the host, library and phone app in one workflow and is usually the quickest route to playing. Move to Moonlight with Sunshine when that simple path does not cover your apps, desktop use or client devices, and you are prepared to manage a separate host service. Whichever you choose, spend your first troubleshooting effort on the wired host connection, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, phone decoding and controller pairing; those factors govern the experience more reliably than an abstract app-versus-app ranking.
