Steam Input FAQ: Controller Support, Layouts, and Troubleshooting

Steam Input lets you use a wide range of gamepads by translating their buttons, sticks, triggers, and sensors into the actions a game understands. Connect the controller, enable the matching support option in Steam when one is available, then open the game’s controller configuration from your Library. From there, you may choose a native action layout or use legacy bindings that emulate a keyboard, mouse, or XInput-style gamepad.

What Steam Input does

Steam Input is Steam’s controller-configuration system. It sits between a physical controller and a game, allowing you to choose what each control sends. The result can be a game-specific layout, a community-created arrangement, or a custom mapping you build yourself.

There are two fundamentally different ways a game can use Steam Input:

Native action-based input

Games with native Steam Input integration define actions such as move, jump, reload, pause, or open the map. Steam presents those named actions in the layout editor rather than only showing generic buttons. A game may also define action sets for different contexts, such as menus, driving, or on-foot gameplay. The available actions and action sets are determined by the game, so two titles can expose very different editors.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Legacy mode

Legacy mode is the fallback for games that do not provide native action definitions. Valve’s documentation states that “Legacy mode” bindings are always available for any game. In this mode, a controller input is translated into a keyboard key, mouse movement or click, or an XInput-style gamepad signal. That makes older games and games without Steam Input integration configurable, but it also means the game receives emulated input rather than its own named actions.

Valve describes Steam Input as supporting the major controllers used with Steam, while qualifying that statement with a documented list of device families. The list is useful for identifying supported protocols, not a guarantee that every model, driver, wireless adapter, or game combination will behave identically. See the Steam Input overview for the system’s scope.

Which controllers Steam Input supports

Valve’s major-device list includes the following categories. A family name can include variants that use the same input protocol.

Controller family What the documented support means
Steam Controller Valve’s own controller family is included in the major supported-device list.
PlayStation 4 PS4 controllers are listed as a supported family; the connection method and any remapping software can affect what Steam detects.
Xbox 360 Xbox 360 controllers are listed among the major supported devices.
Xbox One Xbox One controllers are included in Valve’s list.
Nintendo Switch Pro Switch Pro controllers are listed as supported.
Steam Link App Mobile Touch Controller The mobile touch-controller option supplied through the Steam Link app appears in the documented list.
PlayStation 3 PS3 controllers are included in the major-device list.
DirectInput gamepads Valve lists any DirectInput gamepad as a major supported category, but individual devices and drivers can still differ.

For the authoritative list and its protocol context, consult Valve’s Steam Input Devices page. If your controller is a less common model, treat detection as something to verify on your own system rather than assuming that the family label guarantees compatibility.

How to connect a controller and open its layout

The exact wording and placement of Steam menus can change as the desktop client and Big Picture mode are updated. Follow the current labels that correspond to these steps.

  1. Connect and, if necessary, charge the controller. Use its supported USB, Bluetooth, or wireless connection and confirm that the operating system sees it.
  2. Open Steam’s controller settings. In the desktop client or Big Picture mode, go to the controller settings area. Look for the support option that matches your controller family when Steam offers one.
  3. Enable the relevant support option. Select the PlayStation, Xbox, Switch Pro, or other matching option where applicable. A generic DirectInput device may not have a family-specific checkbox.
  4. Open your Library. Select the game you want to configure. Valve’s player guide notes that the per-game controller-configuration option appears only when a controller is connected.
  5. Open the game’s controller configuration. Choose the controller or layout button shown on the game’s Library page, then inspect the current layout.
  6. Choose, edit, and apply a layout. Select a recommended or community layout if one suits the game, or open the editor to change individual controls. Save or apply the layout before launching.
  7. Test inside the game. Check movement, camera control, menus, triggers, and any context-sensitive action. A layout can be valid in Steam while still conflicting with the game’s own input handling.

Valve’s player setup instructions are documented in the Steam Input player guide. The language parameters in that URL are part of the supplied link; the practical workflow applies regardless of which language your client displays.

How layouts differ between games

Native layouts show game actions

In a native Steam Input game, the editor can show the developer’s action names. You might bind a face button to an action called Jump rather than simply to a keyboard key. If the game defines separate action sets, Steam can switch the active set when the game changes context. This gives you a more meaningful layout and can make changes easier to understand, but it depends entirely on the game’s integration.

Legacy layouts show outputs

In legacy mode, you choose the output sent to the game. A button can emit a keyboard key, a mouse click, a mouse-region command, or a gamepad button. A stick can emulate a mouse or an analog stick, and a trigger can be assigned to a key or an analog control. The editor therefore focuses on output devices and bindings instead of the game’s own action vocabulary.

  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.

Do not assume that every title offers native actions, action sets, or identical editor controls. The game determines whether Steam can present those richer options; the controller determines which physical inputs are available to assign.

Native Steam Input or legacy mode?

Consideration Native action-based layout Legacy mode
Availability Requires a game implementation that defines Steam Input actions. Available for any game, according to Valve’s legacy-mode documentation.
What you bind The game’s named actions and, where provided, action sets. Keyboard keys, mouse controls, or XInput-style gamepad outputs.
Best fit Games designed around Steam Input and context-specific controls. Older games, games without native integration, or titles that need keyboard and mouse emulation.
Main limitation The game may expose only the actions its developer defined. The game receives emulated input and can be affected by keyboard layouts or mixed-input handling.

Start with the layout Steam presents for the game. If it exposes clear in-game actions, use that model first. If it offers only generic bindings or the title does not recognize native actions, legacy mode is the practical alternative.

Troubleshooting: the controller is missing

The controller is not listed in Steam

  • Confirm the cable, wireless receiver, or Bluetooth connection and check that the controller is powered.
  • Return to Steam’s controller settings and enable the support option for the matching family when one exists.
  • Disconnect other remapping layers temporarily so Steam can see the physical device directly.
  • Reconnect the controller before reopening the game’s Library page. Valve specifically notes that a controller must be connected for the per-game configuration option to appear.

Valve’s player guide covers the connection and settings workflow; use its current menu labels as a reference rather than relying on an older screenshot layout.

The game has no controller-configuration option

First check that Steam detects the controller while the game is selected in your Library. If the option is still absent, the controller may not be connected from Steam’s perspective, or the client may not have the relevant support option enabled. A game can also have its own input behavior that does not expose every Steam configuration feature.

A PlayStation controller appears as an Xbox controller

External remapping software can create an emulated Xbox 360 device. Valve names DS4Windows and InputMapper as examples of tools that can do this. Steam may then communicate with the emulated Xbox device instead of the original PlayStation controller. Close or reconfigure the remapper if you need Steam to identify the physical PlayStation device, and avoid running two translation layers unless you have a specific reason to do so. The detection explanation appears in Valve’s player setup guide.

Troubleshooting: the layout opens but controls fail

Steam recognizes the controller, but the game ignores it

Recognition in Steam does not prove that the game will accept every output. Valve’s developer guidance identifies simultaneous gamepad and mouse input as a common compatibility issue. Some games change prompts, focus, or camera behavior when they see different input types at the same time. If a layout mixes mouse emulation with gamepad output, test a simpler layout that uses one input style where possible and observe whether the game’s behavior changes. Valve does not document one universal end-user fix for every title, so the correct remedy is game-specific.

For the underlying compatibility guidance, see Valve’s Steam Input developer setup page.

Keyboard bindings produce the wrong characters

Legacy keyboard bindings are sent as scancodes. The resulting character depends on the operating system’s keyboard layout, not only on the key position chosen in Steam. Valve specifically cites layouts such as Dvorak and Colemak as cases where a mapping can produce unexpected results. If a game receives the wrong character, inspect its own key bindings and revise the Steam mapping to match the active system layout. A key that is physically in the same position as a familiar QWERTY key may not generate the same character on another layout.

Valve explains this behavior in its Legacy Mode Bindings documentation.

Only some buttons work

Check whether the unresponsive controls are assigned in the active layout and whether the game has switched to another action set. In legacy mode, confirm that each output is valid for the selected emulation type: a keyboard binding will not behave like an analog gamepad axis, and a mouse command will not provide a native gamepad button. Test one control at a time in a simple layout before adding layers, modes, or multi-action bindings.

How to troubleshoot generic and DirectInput controllers

Valve’s list includes any DirectInput gamepad, but that broad category does not guarantee identical behavior for every generic controller. Driver quality, wireless implementation, button numbering, axis ranges, and the game’s own support can all vary. If a generic controller is detected but buttons are assigned incorrectly, open the per-game editor and verify each input rather than relying on the printed labels. If Steam does not detect it at all, test the connection at the operating-system level first, then return to Steam’s controller settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A controller family appearing in Valve’s list establishes protocol-level support; it does not promise support for every unbranded clone, adapter, firmware version, or connection method. The supported-device documentation is the appropriate reference for the categories Valve explicitly names.

A practical decision guide for fixing a setup

  • No device in Steam: fix the physical connection and Steam’s controller-support setting before editing layouts.
  • Device detected, no per-game option: keep the controller connected while viewing the game in the Library.
  • Wrong controller family shown: look for an external remapper creating an emulated device.
  • Named actions available: begin with the native action layout and adjust only the controls you need.
  • No named actions: use legacy bindings and choose keyboard, mouse, or gamepad output deliberately.
  • Game switches prompts or stops responding: test whether mixed mouse and gamepad output is causing a conflict.
  • Wrong letters from keyboard emulation: check the operating-system keyboard layout and the game’s own bindings.

What Steam Input can and cannot guarantee

Steam Input can provide a consistent configuration layer across many controller families and games, but it cannot remove every game-level compatibility problem. Native action support depends on the developer’s implementation. Legacy mode is broadly available, yet its emulated outputs still pass through the game’s handling of keyboard, mouse, and gamepad signals. External remappers can change which device Steam sees, while keyboard layouts can change the characters produced by scancode-based bindings.

When troubleshooting, separate the problem into three checkpoints: does the operating system see the controller, does Steam identify and configure it, and does the game correctly handle the resulting input? Identifying the first checkpoint that fails prevents you from trying layout changes when the real issue is connection or detection.
