Steam games freeze after Alt+Tab on Linux: troubleshooting steps

If a Steam game freezes when you Alt+Tab back to it on Linux, start with the least invasive variable: exclusive fullscreen. Switch the game to borderless windowed or ordinary windowed mode, remove unrelated launch flags, and reproduce the problem. If that changes the symptom, the failure is tied to fullscreen focus or display-mode transitions rather than the game being completely hung.

When windowed modes do not help, run the title through gamescope to separate its presentation from the desktop compositor. For Proton games, capture a Proton log before changing renderers. If several unrelated games freeze, stop treating it as a game-specific bug and verify your graphics drivers, Vulkan/OpenGL setup, and 32-bit OpenGL support.

What an Alt+Tab freeze usually means

An Alt+Tab freeze is a focus-change failure: the game was rendering, you switched to another window, and the game no longer presents a usable frame when you return. The symptoms can look different:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The picture is frozen but music, voice chat, or other sound continues.
  • The game returns to a black screen while the desktop remains responsive.
  • The mouse or keyboard appears trapped in the game, or input returns only after several seconds.
  • The entire desktop session becomes unresponsive, which points to a broader compositor or driver problem.

These distinctions matter. A frozen image with continuing audio often means the process is still running while presentation, focus, or the graphics path has stalled. A lockup that affects the whole desktop deserves driver and compositor investigation rather than another game launch flag. Record what you see before changing settings.

Record a baseline reproduction

Reproduce the freeze once with the current configuration, then write down:

  • Game name and Steam AppID.
  • Whether it is a native Linux build or runs through Proton.
  • Your distribution, kernel, GPU vendor, and graphics-driver version.
  • Whether the session is X11 or Wayland.
  • One monitor or multiple monitors, including refresh rates and mixed-refresh combinations.
  • Exclusive fullscreen, borderless windowed, or ordinary windowed mode.
  • Whether sound continues and whether the desktop still responds.
  • Every Steam launch option currently present.

This baseline prevents you from changing several variables and losing the clue that identifies the failure.

First fix: leave exclusive fullscreen

Exclusive fullscreen is the lowest-cost variable to isolate because Alt+Tab asks the game and the desktop to exchange display focus. Borderless windowed mode keeps the game in a desktop-sized window and generally avoids an exclusive mode transition. It may use a little more compositor overhead and can behave differently with variable-refresh displays, but it is the right first test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change the setting inside the game

  1. Launch the game and open its video, graphics, or display settings.
  2. Change the display mode from Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen to Borderless Windowed.
  3. If borderless is unavailable, choose Windowed and set the desired resolution.
  4. Apply the change, return to the desktop with Alt+Tab, and switch back several times.

Use the game’s own setting first. Developers sometimes implement a title-specific borderless mode that handles input, resolution, and focus better than a generic launch flag.

Use Steam launch options only when necessary

To test a launch option, open the game’s Steam library page, select the gear icon, choose Properties, stay on General, and enter one option in Launch Options. Valve’s documented options include:

  • -windowed to request windowed mode.
  • -sw, an alternate windowed-mode flag accepted by some titles.
  • -fullscreen to request fullscreen mode.

These flags are interpreted by the game, so support is title-dependent. Do not assume that a flag creates a true borderless mode; consult the game’s own documented options when it has a separate borderless setting.

For a clean test, remove unrelated flags first. Overlays, compatibility switches, forced resolutions, frame-limiters, and debugging variables can each alter focus behavior. Test one change at a time and keep a note of the original line so you can restore it.

Interpret the result

  • Borderless or windowed works: the freeze follows the exclusive-fullscreen focus path. Keep that mode, or continue with gamescope if you need fullscreen presentation.
  • All modes freeze: continue with compositor/session and graphics-path tests.
  • The game no longer freezes but performance changes: compare frame pacing and latency before deciding. A workaround is useful only if input and rendering remain acceptable.

Use gamescope as an isolation layer

Gamescope is Valve’s micro-compositor, formerly known as steamcompmgr. It can run a game in its own presentation layer instead of handing every fullscreen transition directly to the desktop compositor. That makes it a diagnostic boundary: if the same game survives Alt+Tab under gamescope, the direct game-to-desktop presentation path is implicated, even though gamescope is not a guaranteed cure.

Start with a conservative wrapper

  1. Open the game’s Properties in Steam and select General.
  2. Replace the existing launch-option line for the test with gamescope -b -- %command%.
  3. Launch the game and test the same Alt+Tab sequence used in your baseline.

The -b option requests a borderless gamescope window. The -- separator tells gamescope that the remaining text is the game command supplied by Steam. Keep the wrapper simple at first; adding scaling, frame pacing, or resolution flags simultaneously makes the result harder to interpret.

Test gamescope fullscreen only after the borderless check

Gamescope also documents -f for a fullscreen window. If borderless gamescope prevents the freeze and you need fullscreen presentation, test:

gamescope -f -- %command%

Compare this with the direct fullscreen mode. A fullscreen gamescope window and a game’s exclusive fullscreen mode are not identical paths, so one can work while the other fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control output and game resolution deliberately

Gamescope supports separate game and output resolutions through -w and -h options. Exact behavior depends on the gamescope build and desktop environment. Change resolution only after the basic wrapper works, and document the values you test. A resolution experiment should answer a specific question—such as whether a mixed-refresh or scaling transition triggers the freeze—not become a collection of arbitrary flags.

Nested gamescope and Steam integration

Gamescope can run nested from an existing Wayland or X11 session. Its documented Steam integration includes a command shaped like gamescope -e -- steam -tenfoot -steamos, which starts Steam inside gamescope’s environment. This is useful when you want to compare a complete Steam presentation path with direct launching, but it changes more than a single game launch option. Treat it as a separate diagnostic configuration and return to the normal desktop after the test.

The -d option enables additional gamescope debugging information. Use it when you need evidence about gamescope’s behavior, and preserve the resulting terminal output or log alongside the game and session details.

What a gamescope result tells you

  • Direct fullscreen fails, gamescope borderless works: focus the investigation on fullscreen transitions or the desktop compositor.
  • Direct and gamescope modes both fail: look at the game’s renderer, Proton, GPU drivers, or a system-wide session issue.
  • Only nested Steam works: compare the normal session’s compositor and display configuration with the nested environment instead of assuming every game needs gamescope.

Compare X11 and Wayland instead of guessing

The desktop session changes how windows receive focus, how fullscreen is negotiated, and how frames are handed to the display. A freeze that occurs on Wayland but not X11, or the reverse, is valuable evidence. It is not proof that one session is universally better.

Run a controlled session comparison

  1. Keep the same game, Proton version, display mode, monitor arrangement, and launch options.
  2. Log out of the current desktop.
  3. At the login screen, choose the other available session type—an X11 session if you were using Wayland, or Wayland if you were using X11.
  4. Launch the game without adding new flags and reproduce the exact Alt+Tab sequence.
  5. Record whether the image, input, audio, and desktop responsiveness change.

If the symptom follows only one session, report that distinction. It gives maintainers a reproducible compositor boundary and is more useful than saying simply that Linux freezes.

For Proton games, capture a log before changing the renderer

Proton adds a Windows-compatibility layer and a translation path between the game’s graphics API and Linux. When a Proton title freezes, obtain a log from the failing configuration before applying renderer switches.

Enable Proton logging

  1. Open the game’s Steam Properties and select General.
  2. In Launch Options, add PROTON_LOG=1 %command%.
  3. Launch the game, reproduce the Alt+Tab freeze once, and exit Steam or the game normally if the desktop remains usable.
  4. Preserve the generated per-game file named in the form steam-<APPID>.log.

Keep the log from the exact run that froze. If you test another Proton version, create a separate run and label it; otherwise it is easy to attribute one version’s messages to another.

Test one Proton version at a time

Changing Proton versions can alter Vulkan extensions, media components, input handling, and window behavior. Select one installed Proton version, reproduce, and record the result. Then change only the Proton version and repeat. Do not combine a Proton change with gamescope, a new display mode, and a renderer override in the same test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use wined3d as a diagnostic renderer switch

For a Proton-only test, replace the launch option with:

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%

This switches from the Vulkan-based DXVK path to OpenGL-based wined3d. It is a diagnostic experiment, not a universal fix. Performance, feature support, and image quality can change substantially, and a result that works under wined3d does not mean the original Vulkan path is healthy. If the freeze disappears, include that fact and the Proton log when seeking help.

If several games freeze, verify the graphics foundation

A problem affecting unrelated native and Proton games is unlikely to be one title’s Alt+Tab implementation. Valve’s Linux Steam support guidance calls out two foundations that can affect Steam broadly: installed graphics drivers and 32-bit OpenGL support.

Check the scope first

  • Test one native Linux game and one Proton game if available.
  • Test a simple 2D or older title and a demanding 3D title.
  • Use the same display mode and session where possible.

If all of them show the same freeze, prioritize your distribution’s current driver instructions and Steam’s support checks. If only one title fails, preserve the system configuration and focus on that game’s mode, Proton version, or launch options.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Verify driver and 32-bit support through your distribution

Use your distribution’s supported package tools and documentation rather than copying package names from another release. Confirm that the driver for your GPU is installed, that Vulkan and OpenGL applications can initialize, and that the corresponding 32-bit OpenGL libraries are present. The exact package names differ by distribution and GPU vendor, so a generic command copied from an unrelated system can make the situation worse.

After a driver change, reboot if the distribution requires it, then repeat the baseline test before adding gamescope or Proton variables. A clean post-driver result is easier to interpret than a stack of simultaneous workarounds.

Choose the right mode for the symptom

Mode Best first use Focus and recovery Performance and latency Multi-monitor considerations Native Linux or Proton
Direct exclusive fullscreen Checking whether the title’s normal fullscreen path is stable Most exposed to focus-change transitions; a failure may leave a frozen frame while audio continues Can offer the game’s intended latency and refresh behavior, but varies by title and session More sensitive to monitor changes, mixed refresh rates, and display handoff Applies to both, with Proton adding another translation layer
Direct borderless windowed Lowest-risk workaround for an exclusive-fullscreen Alt+Tab freeze Usually easier to regain desktop focus because it remains a desktop window May add compositor overhead or alter latency and variable-refresh behavior Often easier to use across monitors, though scaling and refresh behavior remain desktop-dependent Applies to native Linux and Proton when the game implements the mode
Direct ordinary windowed Fallback when borderless is unavailable or needs a clearly bounded test Provides the clearest focus test; window borders and resizing can affect input May require a custom resolution and can expose more desktop-compositor overhead Useful for isolating monitor and scaling issues Applies to both, subject to game support
Gamescope borderless (gamescope -b -- %command%) Separating game presentation from the desktop compositor Can avoid the direct fullscreen handoff; recovery still depends on the session and build Adds a presentation layer and may change latency or frame pacing Provides an independent test of output handling; exact behavior depends on the desktop and gamescope build Useful for native and Proton titles
Gamescope fullscreen (gamescope -f -- %command%) Testing fullscreen presentation without using the game’s own exclusive mode Can distinguish a game fullscreen bug from a gamescope or session issue Results vary with resolution, compositor, and gamescope version Test with one monitor first if monitor topology is part of the symptom Useful for native and Proton titles

A decision path that avoids random changes

  1. Reproduce and classify: note audio, input, desktop responsiveness, game type, session, GPU, monitors, and current mode.
  2. Switch in-game to borderless: if the freeze stops, keep that result and decide whether its latency and refresh behavior are acceptable.
  3. Try ordinary windowed mode: use it to distinguish a borderless implementation issue from a general fullscreen-focus issue.
  4. Test a minimal gamescope wrapper: start with gamescope -b -- %command%; add -f or resolution controls only for a defined test.
  5. Compare X11 and Wayland: keep all other variables unchanged.
  6. For Proton, enable logging: use PROTON_LOG=1 %command%, preserve steam-<APPID>.log, and test one Proton version at a time.
  7. Test wined3d only as evidence: use PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% to determine whether the Vulkan/DXVK path is involved.
  8. Escalate system-wide symptoms: verify graphics drivers, Vulkan/OpenGL operation, and 32-bit OpenGL support.

Common mistakes and how to recover

Leaving several launch options enabled

A long launch line hides which setting changed the result. Copy the original line somewhere safe, clear it, and add one option for each reproduction. Keep environment variables and gamescope wrappers separate in your notes.

Assuming a working workaround identifies the root cause

Borderless mode can hide an exclusive-fullscreen problem without explaining whether the trigger is the game, compositor, driver, monitor topology, or session type. Report the before-and-after configuration rather than calling the workaround a permanent fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing Proton and the renderer together

When both variables change, a successful run does not tell you which one mattered. Return to the last failing configuration, change one variable, and reproduce again.

Testing only after force-killing the desktop

Force-killing a frozen game can destroy useful evidence. If the desktop remains responsive, preserve the Proton or gamescope output first. If the entire session is locked, record what was visible and whether audio continued before restarting.

Ignoring monitor topology

Disconnecting a second monitor or matching refresh rates can be a useful controlled experiment, but it changes the test environment. Record the change and restore the original arrangement when confirming the result.

What to include in a useful bug report

A maintainer needs a reproducible configuration, not only the sentence “Alt+Tab freezes.” Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Game title, Steam AppID, and whether it is native Linux or Proton.
  • Proton version, if applicable.
  • Distribution, kernel, desktop environment, and X11 or Wayland session.
  • GPU model and driver version.
  • Monitor count, resolution, refresh rates, and whether displays use different refresh rates.
  • Game display mode and any gamescope options.
  • Complete Steam launch options, including environment variables.
  • Whether audio continues, whether input works, and whether the desktop remains responsive.
  • The Proton steam-<APPID>.log from a run made with PROTON_LOG=1 %command%, when relevant.
  • The exact sequence that triggers the freeze and which mode or session avoids it.

That information lets others distinguish a focus-transition problem from a renderer failure, a compositor interaction, or a system-wide driver issue.

When to stop using a workaround

Keep borderless or gamescope only if the game remains playable: verify input latency, frame pacing, resolution, HDR or variable-refresh behavior when those features matter, and reliable recovery after several Alt+Tab cycles. If a workaround prevents the freeze but introduces another unacceptable defect, use the comparison results and logs to report the original failure instead of stacking more flags.

The practical order remains consistent: isolate exclusive fullscreen, test a minimal gamescope boundary, compare desktop sessions, collect Proton evidence, and then investigate graphics foundations when the symptom spans multiple games. This sequence changes one meaningful variable at a time and leaves you with information that can lead to a real fix rather than an unexplained launch-line ritual.
