When a Steam Free Weekend ends, the temporary license ends too. Steam removes the event’s free package, although the game can remain visible in your library. What you can do during the event
- Download and launch the promoted base game while the Free Weekend package is active.
- Evaluate the game before deciding whether to purchase it.
- Use the normal Steam store page and library entry associated with the game.
- Buy the full version during or after the event if you want permanent access.
The promotion does not automatically convert into ownership when you install it, play for a certain number of hours, or leave it installed.
What happens when the Free Weekend ends?
At the deadline, Steam automatically removes the temporary free package from the store page. Leaving the files on your drive does not preserve the license. The change is account-based, so reinstalling the event build, launching from a shortcut, or switching computers cannot extend the promotion.

Can I keep playing a Steam Free Weekend game after it ends?
Not on the temporary package. Once the event closes, the documented requirement for continued play is purchase of the full version. The library entry can therefore be confusing: visibility in the library indicates that your account participated, not that you own the game.
If the game still appears installed
Steam may leave the installation present so that you can remove it or transition to a purchased license. An installed copy is not proof of an active entitlement. If the client reports that you need to purchase the game, that is the expected result rather than a malfunction.
If you purchase after the event
Open the game’s current Steam store page, complete the purchase, and then check the library entry. The paid license replaces the temporary access status on your account. Steam may offer a discount alongside a Free Weekend, but a discount is event-specific and is not guaranteed for every promotion.

Steam describes a Free Weekend as typically running over a long four-day weekend, using Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time through Monday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time as a typical example. Use the event timer, not a generic calendar assumption
- Open the game’s current Steam store page while the promotion is active.
- Look for the Free Weekend callout and its remaining-time display.
- Read the publisher’s announcement if the page links to one; it can clarify the exact end time or regional details.
- Plan downloads and play sessions before the displayed deadline, allowing for updates and installation time.
A countdown is more reliable than calling every event a “weekend.” If the store page and an older social post disagree, treat the current store-page timer or current announcement as the authoritative information for that event.
What should you budget if you want to continue?
The only required purchase for continued access is the full version of the promoted base game. Check its current price and edition before investing hours in the trial. A Free Weekend can be paired with a sale, but Steam does not promise a discount for every event, and any reduced price is tied to that title and promotion period.
- Base game: This is the license that replaces the temporary package.
- Edition differences: Compare the standard version with any deluxe or bundle listing; the event does not automatically include every separately sold edition.
- DLC and in-game purchases: Buying the base game does not make unrelated expansions, cosmetic items, currencies, or other listed content free.
- Payment timing: You can buy during the event or return to the store page afterward. The event ending does not create a permanent discount.
A gift card or other payment method is simply a way to pay; it does not change the license rules. The relevant question is whether your account owns the paid product after checkout.
How Free to Play licensing differs

Free access is not the same as free content
There are three separate questions to ask when you see the word “free” on a Steam page:
- Is the base-game license free? F2P means yes under Steam’s free-license model; a Free Weekend means only for the event window.
- Is the access permanent? A Free Weekend is temporary. F2P access has no Free Weekend deadline attached to it.
- Are all items and expansions included? Neither model guarantees that. A title can sell DLC, cosmetic items, currencies, expansions, or other optional purchases.
This is why “I downloaded it without paying” does not by itself tell you whether you own the game. Check the license language and the promotion timer.

How to check your status before and after a promotion
Before installing
- Read the store-page banner to determine whether the offer is a Free Weekend, a permanent Free to Play listing, a demo, or another promotion.
- Note the displayed end time if it is a Free Weekend.
- Check whether the offer covers the base game or identifies particular editions, modes, or DLC separately.
- Review the price shown for the full version and any event discount before you start, so you know what continued access will cost.
While playing
- Keep the event deadline in mind; downloading late in the window does not extend it.
- Use the same Steam account that claimed or installed the event package.
- Save your progress normally, but do not assume that saved data grants a license after the event.
- Allow time for downloads, patches, and installation before the timer reaches zero; time spent waiting for an update still counts against the event window.
After the deadline
- Return to the game’s store page and confirm whether the Free Weekend callout has ended.
- Open the library entry and read the purchase or license message instead of relying on the fact that the icon remains visible.
- If you want to continue, purchase the full version from the current store page.
- If you do not want to buy it, uninstall the event package to reclaim disk space.

“It is in my library, so I own it.”
Not necessarily. Steam can leave a Free Weekend participant’s library entry visible after removing the temporary package. The documented post-event capability is uninstalling; ownership requires the paid license.

Installation and entitlement are different. The promotion’s end changes the account’s license status. An offline shortcut cannot turn a temporary package into a permanent one.
“Free to Play means there are no charges.”
