Short answer: a Steam Free Weekend gives temporary access to a game’s base version, usually for a long four-day event. You do not keep the game for free when the event ends. Whether saves or achievements carry over is decided by the individual game, not guaranteed by Steam. If you later buy the game, that purchase is considered under Steam’s normal refund rules—generally a request within 14 days and under two hours of paid playtime, subject to the full policy and its exceptions.
What a Steam Free Weekend actually gives you
Valve describes a Free Weekend as a time-limited promotion that lets players temporarily access and play an eligible game for free. The promotion normally opens the game’s base package rather than a separate trial build. A typical event runs from Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific through Monday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific, but that is only a common schedule. The event listing for the particular game is the authority for its start and end time.

The free package is associated with the game’s existing Steam app and depots. This is different from a demo, which uses a separate demo app, and from a free-to-play game, which remains available without an event. A Free Weekend is temporary access to a normally paid title.

Steam automatically removes the free package when the promotion ends. The game may still appear in your library because Steam records that you accessed it, but the free entitlement no longer lets you launch and play the paid version. You can uninstall the files at any time. To continue playing after the event, you must purchase the full game.

How to find the exact deadline
- Open the game’s Steam store page or the event announcement that advertised the promotion.
- Read the displayed end date and time, including the time zone.
- Plan around that listing rather than assuming every Free Weekend follows the usual Thursday-to-Monday pattern.
- If the page shows a discount that ends at a different time, treat the discount deadline and the free-access deadline as separate.
Starting a download before the deadline does not turn the promotion into a permanent license. Access is controlled by the event entitlement, not by whether the game files remain installed.
Can you keep playing without buying it?
No. A Free Weekend is not a free-to-keep giveaway. Once Steam deactivates and removes the free package, continued play requires a paid license. Leaving the installation on your drive does not preserve access, and adding the title to your library does not grant ownership.
If you decide not to buy, you can remove the game through Steam’s usual uninstall command. If you do buy it, Steam converts your account to the normal paid license for that title; the event itself is not a permanent edition or a reduced-feature ownership tier.

Will your save files carry over after you buy?
There is no platform-wide promise that Free Weekend progress will transfer. Save behavior is game-specific. A developer may store saves locally, use Steam Cloud, maintain a separate profile system, or combine several methods. Steam Cloud can store save games and other data, but each game chooses whether to support it and how to implement it.
What Steam Cloud can and cannot tell you
If a title supports Steam Cloud, the service may synchronize the files created during the event. That still does not guarantee that the paid version will read those files, that every save location is synchronized, or that a conflict will be resolved in the way you expect. Steam cautions that lost cloud data is unlikely to be recoverable, so Cloud should not be treated as a complete backup.
How to check before you commit to a long playthrough
- On the game’s store page, look for the Steam Cloud feature indicator and read the developer’s support notes.
- Check the game’s current event announcement, community announcement, or support article for an explicit statement about Free Weekend progress.
- Close the game normally before the event ends, then allow Steam to finish any synchronization shown in the client.
- After purchasing, launch the game and look for your existing profile or save slots before starting a new game.
- If the saves are missing, do not overwrite the old local or cloud files with a new profile. Stop and follow the developer’s recovery instructions first.
Only an explicit, current statement from the game’s developer can establish that its Free Weekend saves are intended to carry over. Do not generalize one game’s behavior to other titles.

Do achievements earned during the Free Weekend stay?
Steam’s general Free Weekend guidance does not promise universal achievement persistence or later unlocking. Some games may record event-earned achievements in a way that remains visible after purchase; others may restrict, delay, or reset them. The result depends on the game’s achievement implementation and the developer’s policy.

- Look for a developer FAQ or event announcement that specifically addresses achievements earned during the promotion.
- Check the game’s support documentation for references to trial, free-weekend, or temporary-license accounts.
- After buying, review the game’s achievement list and profile before assuming an achievement has been permanently recorded.
If the developer has not made a specific statement, treat achievement transfer as unknown rather than guaranteed. Steam’s general promotion description cannot resolve that game-level question.

What changes if you buy the game?
A purchase after the event is a normal Steam transaction. The Free Weekend gives you a chance to evaluate the title, but it does not create a special ownership category or a special refund program. Before paying, compare the game’s current price and any event discount with the amount of playtime you expect to get from it.

- Confirm the event’s actual end time so you know how long you have to test the game.
- Decide whether the game’s core loop is still appealing after the free period, not just whether the novelty was fun.
- Look for a developer statement about save and achievement carryover if those records matter to you.
- Note the price, discount end time, required storage, and any account or online-service requirement shown on the store page.
- Keep in mind that any add-ons, season passes, or downloadable content are separate purchases unless the listing says otherwise.
Can you refund a game bought after a Free Weekend?
Steam’s general refund policy for games and software says an eligible request should be submitted within 14 days of purchase and while the title has been played for less than two hours. The policy has exceptions and additional conditions, so those two thresholds are not an unconditional guarantee.
Steam also says a request outside the stated conditions can still be submitted for review. Approved refunds are issued within one week, subject to the refund method available for the transaction. The Steam refund page used for this guidance lists April 23, 2024 as its last update; check the live policy before relying on any deadline because platform terms can change.
Does the free event itself create a refund?
No. The event is temporary access, not a paid purchase, so there is no Free Weekend charge to refund. If you buy the game afterward, the refund question concerns that paid transaction and the policy in effect when you submit the request.
How to make a sensible refund decision
- Record the purchase date and the playtime shown by Steam after purchase.
- Read the current refund page and check whether your purchase type has an exception.
- Submit the request through Steam Support if you decide the paid version is not suitable.
- Explain any unusual circumstance accurately, especially if your request falls outside the normal time or playtime limits.
Steam states that refunds are designed to remove the risk from purchasing titles, not to provide games for free. Treat the policy as a safety net for a genuine purchase decision, not as a way to repeatedly obtain unrestricted playtime.

The game will not launch before the advertised end time
- Reopen the store page and verify that the event is active in your region and that the displayed time has not passed.
- Restart Steam so the client refreshes the temporary license.
- Check whether the event applies to the base game or only to a specific edition or platform.
- Make sure the download and any required update have completed.
If the event listing is still active but Steam reports that you do not own the game, contact Steam Support and include the title, your account region, and the event’s displayed end time.
Your save is missing after purchase
- Do not create or save over a new profile if the old files may still exist.
- Check the game’s own save-folder and cloud-conflict instructions.
- Confirm that Steam Cloud synchronization finished on the computer used during the event.
- Ask the developer whether Free Weekend accounts and paid accounts use compatible save formats.
Because Steam Cloud implementations differ, Steam Support cannot guarantee recovery of a title’s lost or incompatible save data.
An achievement did not appear
Check the game’s achievement rules and developer announcements first. A missing achievement may reflect a game-specific restriction rather than a problem with your Steam account. Avoid assuming that buying the game will retroactively unlock every event achievement.
