Steam Frame switched Wi‑Fi power saving back on at startup, and Valve has now fixed it

Steam Frame was re-enabling Wi‑Fi power saving every time it started, even when owners had turned the option off. Valve fixed that startup-persistence bug in a Steam Client update released for all Steam Frame users on October 15, 2026.

What the Steam Frame bug did

The failure affected the setting that controls Wi‑Fi power saving. A user could disable Wi‑Fi power saving in Steam Frame’s settings, but the client would enable it again during the next startup. The symptom was therefore not a setting that failed to save immediately; it was a startup-state problem that overwrote the saved choice when the device launched.

Valve’s October 15 Steam Client release notes describe the correction directly: “Fixed an issue where Wi-Fi power saving was enabled at startup, despite being disabled in settings.” The note does not identify the internal component responsible, the underlying code change, or how long the defect had been present, so those details cannot be established from the announcement.

Valve’s fix is in the stable Steam Client update

Valve announced the Steam Frame client update at 2:53 p.m. on October 15, 2026, and said it was released “for all users.” That wording matters: the Wi‑Fi correction is part of the generally released Steam Client update, not a feature limited to a testing channel.

The same client release includes several Wireless Adapter changes:

  • Improved reliability when pairing the Wireless Adapter.
  • Progress reporting for the initial connection after pairing.
  • A Windows-side change that prevents the adapter from going to sleep.
  • A fix for a driver crash when adapter initialization fails.

These adapter items are related connectivity improvements, but they are separate symptoms from the Wi‑Fi power-saving setting resetting at startup.

Do not confuse the client fix with SteamOS 0.5.6 Beta

Valve also listed SteamOS 0.5.6 Beta for Steam Frame as an opt-in testing-channel release. It is available through Settings > System > System Update Channel. That beta is an operating-system build, while the Wi‑Fi power-saving correction described above is in the stable Steam Client update.

Update path Availability Installation scope Main issue addressed
Steam Client update for Steam Frame Released to all users on October 15, 2026 Client software Wi‑Fi power saving being re-enabled at startup, plus Wireless Adapter fixes
SteamOS 0.5.6 Beta Opt-in testing channel Operating system Separate beta release; not required for the client-side Wi‑Fi correction

What Steam Frame owners should do

  1. Install the current Steam Client update offered for Steam Frame. The Wi‑Fi fix is delivered through the client update released October 15, 2026.
  2. After updating, open the Wi‑Fi settings and confirm that power saving is disabled if that is your preferred configuration.
  3. Restart Steam Frame once. Check the setting again after startup to verify that it remains disabled.
  4. If it still switches back on, record the Steam Client version and SteamOS version shown on the device, then contact Steam Support with those details.

The release notes do not provide a separate manual workaround for systems that continue to reset the option after updating. Installing the SteamOS 0.5.6 Beta is not presented as a required step for this fix and carries the normal trade-off of using an opt-in test build.

What is still unknown

Valve has not published a reliable count of affected Steam Frame owners. There is also no quantified measurement in the cited announcements for any latency, throughput, battery-life, or connection-time effect caused by the setting resetting. Reports can confirm the behavior and the shipped correction, but they do not establish a universal performance impact.

Independent reports published on October 16, 2026 by GamingOnLinux and PlayingTux reproduced Valve’s wording about the startup Wi‑Fi power-saving fix and summarized the Wireless Adapter changes. Their coverage corroborates the release-note description, while the official announcement remains the source for the release scope and channel distinction.

How to interpret the update

If your Steam Frame repeatedly enabled Wi‑Fi power saving after boot, the behavior was a known client defect rather than evidence that you had misconfigured the setting. The stable client update released October 15 is the corrective path. The separate SteamOS beta is optional and should be considered only when you specifically want to test that operating-system channel, not as a prerequisite for restoring Wi‑Fi setting persistence.
