Steam Frame reservations are already open only in the sense that the waitlist remains available; the one-time signup randomization has ended. Valve closed the original signup window on September 17, 2026, randomized the order that day, and began sending purchase invitations on September 18. A reservation is not a completed purchase: it holds your place for a later purchase email. When that email arrives, you have 72 hours to pay or Valve cancels the reservation and offers the unit to the next person.
As of Valve’s October 9 update, logged-in customers can open the Steam Frame product page to see an estimated order window of “by December” or “in 2027.” Those are Valve’s estimates from that update, not guaranteed delivery dates for every customer. Check your own account rather than inferring timing from the general queue announcement.

Steam Frame availability right now
The September signup deadline has passed. Valve closed signups at 10 a.m. Pacific on September 17, 2026, then performed a one-time randomization. People who joined before the cutoff were placed into reservation or waitlist queues; later signups are added to the end of the waitlist rather than entering the randomized group.

- Read the expected order window shown on the page. Valve’s October 9 announcement says customers may see “by December” or “in 2027.”
Valve has not published an individual guaranteed delivery date, the number of units assigned to each queue, or a date by which every waitlisted customer will receive an offer. Queue timing can differ by model and shipping region.
How the Steam Frame reservation system works
Steam Frame uses a reservation queue rather than a normal first-come, first-served product launch. Valve accepted signups over several days and randomized their order once. The stated goal was to reduce the advantage of bots, unusually fast connections, and people able to refresh at the exact launch moment.
There are separate queues for each storage model and separate regional lists. Your signup choice and location therefore affect which line you entered.

Valve says it exhausts a region’s reservation queue before moving into that region’s waitlist. A waitlisted customer therefore does not leapfrog someone who still holds a reservation in the same regional process.

The October 9 windows are snapshots of Valve’s estimate at that time. They should not be read as a promise that every person in a category will receive a headset by the same date, particularly because model and region queues move independently.

What each email means
“You’re in the reservation queue”
This message means Valve placed you in the group with a reservation spot. It does not mean you have paid, that a headset has shipped, or that you can immediately check out. Valve will send a later purchase email when your unit is ready. Keep the Steam account and email address accessible, and monitor the product page while signed in.
“You’re on the waitlist”
This means your signup landed after the reservation allocation available at that point. Valve can move people forward when existing reservations are canceled or otherwise open. The company says it processes a region’s reservation queue first, so waitlist movement depends on cancellations, supply, model, and region. Valve has not stated how many units are in any queue or when all waitlisted customers will be reached.

There is no public formula that converts a signup date into a purchase date. The randomization removed ordinary signup-order assumptions, and Valve has not published personal queue positions or a complete fulfillment schedule.
The most reliable indication is the expected window displayed on your logged-in Steam Frame product page. If you see “by December,” treat it as Valve’s current estimate for your account category, not a guaranteed ship date. If you see “in 2027,” Valve said customers in that group would receive more detailed timing by January. That later detail is still an estimate, not a promise of a particular day.
The 72-hour purchase deadline
When Valve sends your purchase invitation, act promptly. Valve’s FAQ states: “You’ll then have 72 hours to complete the purchase before we cancel your reservation and move on to the next person in the queue.” The deadline applies to completing the order, not merely opening the email.

- Open the purchase email and follow its Steam checkout link.
- Confirm the offered model, shipping destination, taxes or VAT, and payment details.
- Submit payment before the 72-hour period expires.
- Save the order confirmation and watch Steam for shipping updates.
If you miss the deadline, Valve says it cancels the reservation and offers the opportunity to the next person. The reviewed FAQ does not promise an extension, reinstatement, transfer, or recovery of the original place, so do not assume customer support can restore it.

Canceling a reservation
Canceling releases your place. Valve may then promote another person, and the official FAQ does not promise that you can reclaim the same position later. Cancel only if you are willing to give up the reservation.
Leaving the waitlist
You can leave the waitlist, but doing so also releases your place. There is no stated mechanism for preserving your original position while deciding later.
Changing from 256GB to 1TB (or the reverse)
After the September 17 randomization and notification of reservation or waitlist status, Valve says you cannot change the selected model. The 256GB and 1TB versions have separate queues, so a model change is not a simple edit to an existing reservation.

- A prior Steam purchase made before April 27, 2026.
- One signup per household.
Valve said it would use payment method, shipping address, and other information to remove duplicate household entries. These are the published criteria; Valve has not stated additional eligibility rules in the cited FAQ.
People can still join the waitlist after the September 17 cutoff, but those signups go to the back in the order they join. They do not enter the earlier randomized order.
Regional queues and where Valve ships
Valve maintains separate regional lists and assigns customers automatically according to location. The published regions for the reservation process are North America, the UK/EU, and Australia. Different regions can advance at different speeds because each has its own supply and queue.
Valve says Steam ships directly to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and Australia. Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong use KOMODO, which Valve identifies as an authorized distributor. Valve’s announcement said South Korea would ship at a later date. Distribution arrangements can change, so buyers in those territories should verify the current route on Valve’s product page or with the authorized distributor before relying on older instructions.
Steam Frame models, prices, and accessories
The signup offered two storage capacities. Valve’s published 2026 launch prices were USD 1,059 for the 256GB version and USD 1,299 for the 1TB version. These are launch figures from Valve/Steam Hardware, not a live-price guarantee, and they are not universal prices: Valve also listed market-specific amounts in Canadian dollars, euros, pounds, Australian dollars, and Polish złoty. Prices were inclusive of VAT where applicable in Valve’s announcement.

Valve’s product information names a 45W power supply, an Ergonomic Accessories Kit, an Accessory Replacement Kit, and Zenni prescription inserts. The first-party power supply and kits were presented as add-to-cart choices for customers buying a Steam Frame. The cited material does not establish separate retail availability or current stock for those accessories.
Practical steps to avoid losing your place
- Keep access to the Steam account used for signup; another account may not show your status.
- Check the Steam Frame product page while logged in rather than relying on generalized launch posts.
- Monitor the email inbox associated with Steam and its spam or junk folders.
- Make sure your payment method and shipping address are ready before an invitation arrives.
- Record the exact deadline shown in the purchase message; the stated window is 72 hours.
- Do not cancel or leave the waitlist merely to change models, because Valve says the selected model cannot be changed after randomization and leaving releases the place.
Common mistakes and what they mean
Assuming a reservation is an order
A reservation is a place in line for a purchase opportunity. Payment and an order confirmation happen later.
Assuming waitlist status is first-come, first-served
The initial order was randomized, and later waitlist additions are appended after that process. Signup speed at the original launch moment does not determine the randomized position.

Using a general date as a personal delivery promise
Only the estimate shown for your signed-in account reflects Valve’s current category assignment. Even that estimate can differ by model and region and is not a guaranteed individual delivery date.
Expecting a model swap
Valve says the model choice is locked after randomization and status notification. A different capacity would involve a separate signup or waitlist position, not an edit to the existing one.
Official information and updates
Valve’s Steam Frame product page and signup FAQ contain the reservation rules, model choices, regional handling, and 72-hour deadline. Valve’s October 9, 2026 Steam Hardware update explains the fulfillment timeline and the logged-in expected-order-window display. These pages are the appropriate places to verify changes because queue estimates and distribution arrangements can be updated.
