Those figures describe a possible development design, not a confirmed product or launch specification.
What the Plano report actually establishes
Steam Frame Hub reported on October 14, 2026 that Valve was working on a mid-generation Steam Frame refresh codenamed “Plano,” characterized primarily by new displays. The evidence is a set of references in publicly available Steam Frame kernel source. Road to VR and Notebookcheck also reported the display details, while noting that the code is incomplete and could represent internal testing or an abandoned configuration.

Reported display specifications
| Specification | Current Steam Frame comparison | Plano configuration reported in source code |
|---|---|---|
| Panel technology | LCD | Appears to be Micro-OLED; supplier not confirmed |
| Native resolution per eye | 2,160 × 2,160 | 3,552 × 3,840 |
| Calculated pixels per eye | 4,665,600 | 13,639,680 |
| Reported pixel-count change | Baseline | Approximately 2.93 times the baseline, calculated from the dimensions |
| Refresh rate | Not stated in the reviewed reports | Up to 90 Hz reported; 120 Hz described as experimental |
| Reported default output | Not stated | 1,776 × 1,920 per eye |
| Reported higher-quality mode | Not stated | 2,368 × 2,560 per eye in a reported 1.5× mode |
| Processing constraint | Not stated | Display-bandwidth limits attributed to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 platform |
The “nearly three times” claim is arithmetic rather than an independently published benchmark. Multiplying each panel’s width by its height gives 13,639,680 pixels for the reported Plano panel and 4,665,600 for the current 2,160 × 2,160 panel. Dividing the first figure by the second produces approximately 2.93.
Native panel resolution is not the same as rendered output
A 3,552 × 3,840 panel would have that native physical pixel grid, but the reports indicate that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 platform may not drive every pixel at the default setting. The reported standard output is 1,776 × 1,920 per eye, exactly half the panel’s dimensions in each direction. A reported 1.5× mode raises output to 2,368 × 2,560 per eye, but that mode is described as experimental.

Consequently, “3,552 × 3,840 per eye” should not be read as a promise that games will routinely render at that resolution. It describes the panel; actual image output depends on the display pipeline, application support, refresh-rate target and available bandwidth. The reports do not provide independent testing showing how Plano looks in either mode.

What “foveated scaling” means here
The reported design uses “foveated scaling,” described as scaling performed by the headset’s display controller so that pixel density is increased around the user’s gaze. This is different from game-side foveated rendering, where a game renders a high-detail region and reduces detail elsewhere before sending an image to the headset.

Controller-level scaling could let a high-resolution panel present more detail where the eye is looking without requiring the application to render the entire panel at native resolution. The reports do not establish the eye-tracking hardware, the size of the high-density region, latency, image-quality behavior during eye movement or which software will support the feature.
Why Micro-OLED could matter—and what is still unknown
Micro-OLED generally offers the possibility of very high pixel density and OLED’s per-pixel light control, which can produce deeper blacks than an LCD. Those are panel-level characteristics, not a tested Plano result. No reviewed source includes hands-on measurements of contrast, persistence, glare, lens clarity, field of view, brightness, motion quality or screen-door visibility.

The reports speculate that the panels could resemble those used in Samsung’s Galaxy XR, but they do not identify a supplier. A resemblance to another headset’s panel does not confirm the component, optical stack or final image quality Valve might use.
Development timeline and confidence level
| Repository branch | Dates reported | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
deckard-oled |
December 17, 2025 to February 9, 2026 | Earlier OLED-related development activity |
deckard-plano |
March 3 to October 2, 2026 | Later activity associated with the Plano codename |
Steam Frame Hub interprets the continuing repository activity as evidence of ongoing work and has offered a late-2027 estimate. That estimate is the outlet’s opinion, not a Valve schedule. Road to VR likewise says repository activity does not prove that the configuration will become a commercial product.

Should you buy the current Steam Frame or wait?
Choose the current configuration if you need known hardware
The current comparison point has a documented 2,160 × 2,160 LCD panel per eye. It is the only configuration described as existing rather than inferred from development code. Buying it avoids making a decision around an unannounced device, but it also means accepting LCD panels and the lower stated per-eye pixel count.
Wait if display density is your priority
Waiting makes sense for readers specifically interested in Micro-OLED, higher native pixel density or the possibility of hardware-level foveated scaling. The trade-off is that there is no confirmed availability, price or timetable, and the default output could be substantially below the panel’s native resolution.
Do not treat the rumor as a purchase specification
Until Valve confirms a product, the 3,552 × 3,840 dimensions, 90 Hz ceiling and experimental 120 Hz mode should be treated as reported development targets. They are useful for understanding the direction of the project, not guarantees for a retail headset.

Plano appears to be a real development configuration referenced in Valve’s source code, but its commercial status is unresolved. If the reported design ships, its Micro-OLED panels would contain about 2.93 times as many pixels per eye as the current Steam Frame’s LCD panels. The most important qualification is that reported bandwidth limits may make 1,776 × 1,920 per eye the default output, leaving the full native panel resolution—and the headset itself—unconfirmed.
