Steam Frame eye tracking not working: troubleshooting foveated streaming and PC gaze data

If Steam Frame eye tracking appears not to work, first identify which function has failed. Steam Frame uses two inward-facing cameras to provide eye-tracking data for foveated streaming, while a streamed PC application can receive gaze or eye-openness data through separate Steam Link and application interfaces. A PC app receiving no data does not, by itself, prove that the headset’s internal foveated-streaming tracking has failed.

The quickest diagnosis is to name the missing output: gaze-directed image detail in the headset, OpenXR gaze data on the PC, or OSC eye-openness values. Each output has a different path, version dependency and test.

Identify the symptom before changing anything

There are several different troubleshooting cases that are often described as “eye tracking not working.” Start by observing what you can and cannot see, then use the matching row:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What you observe Data path involved First place to investigate
Image detail does not appear to follow where you look during a streamed VR session. Steam Frame’s internal eye tracking and the foveated-streaming pipeline. Headset fit, unobstructed interior cameras, headset and streaming software versions, then SteamVR diagnostics.
A PC application shows no gaze position or gaze direction. Steam Link sharing plus the interface supported by that application, potentially OpenXR. Steam Link eye-data settings and the application’s documented OpenXR support.
A PC application shows no eye-openness values. The application’s OSC input path and the Steam Frame eye-openness feature. Confirm that the app expects OSC, then check the feature-specific SteamOS requirement.
One application fails, but another application receives data. Usually an application-side support, permission or interface mismatch. The failing application’s documented input path and settings.
Every tested application fails to receive data. A common Steam Link, SteamVR, SteamOS or headset path. Shared settings, versions and a reproducible SteamVR report.
Controller or room tracking is also failing. The outward-facing headset-tracking cameras, not necessarily the interior eye cameras. Keep this as a separate tracking problem; do not assume it diagnoses eye tracking.

Use the rest of this guide according to the row that matches your symptom. Do not treat the OpenXR and OSC paths as interchangeable.

What Steam Frame’s cameras do

Valve describes Steam Frame as having two cameras inside the headset for eye tracking. Their low-latency data is used to steer image detail toward the wearer’s gaze for foveated streaming. In practical terms, the headset and streaming pipeline can allocate more detail where you are looking instead of rendering every part of the view at the same level of detail.

This is separate from the four outward-facing monochrome cameras used for headset and controller tracking. Infrared illuminators support tracking in dark environments, but those outward-facing cameras are not the interior eye-tracking cameras.

That distinction matters when diagnosing a tracking complaint. A controller or room-tracking problem points toward the outward-facing tracking system; a failure to receive gaze data in a PC application points toward a data-sharing interface; and a lack of gaze-directed detail during streaming concerns the internal eye-tracking and foveated-rendering path. A normal room-tracking view therefore does not prove that an application is receiving gaze data, and an application interface failure does not prove that either camera pair is defective.

Check whether a streamed PC app is allowed to receive eye data

If your actual symptom is that a PC application receives no gaze information, start with Steam Link rather than looking for a headset calibration menu.

  1. Open the Steam Link settings used for the headset-to-PC session. Look for the eye-data, eye-gaze or related sharing control. Valve’s Steam Link announcement says eye-gaze information can be passed through OpenXR when the feature is enabled in Steam Link settings. The wording and location can change between software builds, so use the current label shown on your device.
  2. Confirm that sharing is enabled for the session you are testing. A setting changed for one streaming configuration may not describe a different PC, client or session. Record the setting as it appears instead of assuming it is globally enabled.
  3. Confirm that the application supports the same interface. Enabling sharing does not make every application consume gaze data automatically. The application must request and support the relevant OpenXR interaction profile or another documented interface.
  4. Test a second application that is known to use the same interface. If one application works and another does not, record that distinction. It is evidence of an application-path problem rather than proof that both interior cameras are defective.
  5. Close and relaunch the affected application after changing sharing settings. Applications commonly discover available OpenXR interaction profiles when they start. A restart gives the application another opportunity to enumerate the feature after the setting changes.

Valve specifically identifies XR_EXT_eye_gaze_interaction as the OpenXR route for eye-gaze information through Steam Link when enabled. Do not assume that an app expecting OSC eye-openness values will read this OpenXR gaze extension, or that an OpenXR-only app will understand OSC. Ask the application documentation which value it expects: gaze direction or position, eye openness, or a different input.

Understand the OSC eye-openness requirement

Valve’s SteamVR 2.18.2 beta announcement, dated October 1, 2026, says Steam Frame eye-openness information is exposed through OSC and requires SteamOS 0.4.3 or higher. At the time of that announcement, SteamOS 0.4.3 was on the OS Beta branch.

This is a requirement for that specific eye-openness-over-OSC feature. It is not a published requirement for all Steam Frame eye tracking or for foveated streaming. Applying “SteamOS 0.4.3 or higher” as a universal eye-tracking requirement can send you down the wrong troubleshooting path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify whether the application is asking for eye openness over OSC or gaze data through OpenXR.
  2. If it requires the OSC feature, check the SteamOS version and update channel shown in the headset’s current system software. The October 1 announcement described 0.4.3 as a beta-branch version at that time.
  3. Check Valve’s current release notes before switching channels. Beta availability and the version considered stable can change after the announcement.
  4. Retest the application only after the headset and the relevant SteamVR or Steam Link components have restarted on the same software path.

Do not move to a beta branch solely because a different eye-tracking function is failing. Match the version check to the interface the application actually uses, and note the branch in your test record.

OpenXR gaze and OSC eye openness: a direct comparison

Question OpenXR eye gaze OSC eye openness
What does it represent? Gaze information such as the direction or position an application requests. Eye-openness information exposed from Steam Frame.
Where is the relevant handoff? Steam Link, when eye-data sharing is enabled, and the application’s OpenXR support. The SteamVR eye-openness feature and the application’s OSC listener.
Named interface or requirement XR_EXT_eye_gaze_interaction. SteamOS 0.4.3 or higher in Valve’s October 1, 2026 SteamVR 2.18.2 beta note.
What does a failure suggest? Check sharing and whether the app supports the extension. Check that the app actually expects OSC and that the headset meets the stated feature version.

This comparison prevents a common mistake: turning on an OpenXR sharing option and then testing an app that only listens for OSC, or updating SteamOS for OSC when the application is actually waiting for OpenXR gaze.

Perform a cautious headset fit and obstruction check

A normal wearing position is a sensible visual check because the eye-tracking cameras are inside the headset. With the headset powered off or removed, inspect the area around the interior cameras for an obvious obstruction, shipping material or debris. Wear the headset in its normal position and make sure the display is not being held unusually far from, or pressed unusually close to, your eyes.

Keep the check limited to what is visible. Do not open the headset, touch the camera modules, move their mounts or insert tools into the camera area. Do not treat a lens accessory as a fix: Valve lists Zenni prescription inserts and other first-party accessories, but does not identify them as remedies for an eye-tracking fault.

This is a precaution, not an official Valve calibration procedure. Valve’s published product information does not provide a user calibration sequence, reset command or camera-alignment test. If normal fit and a clear camera area make no difference, move on to the software-path comparison instead of repeating an improvised “calibration.”

Separate an app problem from a system-wide problem

Use controlled comparisons instead of changing several settings at once:

  • One app only: check that app’s OpenXR or OSC support, permissions and startup configuration. Capture its exact version and whether it reports that the eye interface is unavailable.
  • Several apps on the same PC: compare their interfaces. If OpenXR gaze works but OSC eye-openness does not, the result points to the interface or version requirement rather than a general camera failure.
  • No app receives data and foveated streaming also appears wrong: treat it as a broader headset, Steam Link or SteamVR issue. Check shared software versions and prepare a system report.
  • Foveated streaming appears normal but an app receives nothing: the internal eye-tracking path may be functioning while data sharing or application support is not.
  • Only one PC fails: record the PC, Steam Link session and application combination. Do not generalize the result to every headset session.

Write down the result of each test. “Works in application A, fails in application B” is substantially more useful to support than “eye tracking is broken.” Also note whether the symptom is absent data, stale data, or a visible foveated-streaming change; those observations describe different points in the path.

Check software versions without overgeneralizing

Record the versions visible on the headset, SteamOS, Steam Link and SteamVR before troubleshooting further. Version requirements are feature-specific:

Feature or path Published version detail How to use that fact
Steam Frame eye-openness information over OSC SteamVR 2.18.2 beta announcement dated October 1, 2026 specifies SteamOS 0.4.3 or higher; 0.4.3 was on the OS Beta branch at the time. Use this check only when the application expects OSC eye-openness information. Verify the current branch and release status before changing channels.
Foveated streaming’s internal eye tracking No separate minimum version is stated in the cited public product material. Do not claim that SteamOS 0.4.3 is required for all headset eye tracking.
Eye gaze passed to a PC application through Steam Link Valve describes OpenXR eye gaze through XR_EXT_eye_gaze_interaction when enabled in Steam Link settings. Check sharing and application support; do not infer that every application uses OpenXR.

If you update software, change one relevant component at a time where practical, restart the session and note what changed. This preserves a useful comparison if the symptom returns. Before selecting an OS Beta branch, confirm that the feature you need is the OSC feature described in Valve’s note, not simply “eye tracking” in the broad sense.

Common pitfalls that waste time

  • Confusing camera pairs: the four outward-facing monochrome cameras handle headset and controller tracking; the two interior cameras are the eye-tracking hardware.
  • Assuming one interface serves every app: OpenXR eye gaze and OSC eye openness are different paths and may be implemented by different applications.
  • Generalizing the beta requirement: SteamOS 0.4.3 or higher is tied to the OSC eye-openness feature in the dated announcement, not established as a requirement for foveated streaming.
  • Changing channels without recording the original state: write down the current branch and versions before testing so a later report is reproducible.
  • Buying accessories as a diagnosis: prescription inserts and other accessories are not documented eye-tracking repairs.
  • Opening the headset: there is no published user repair procedure for the camera modules; opening or adjusting them can create a separate hardware problem.
  • Reporting only a conclusion: a report that says “not working” omits the app, interface, versions and reproduction steps needed to distinguish a sharing failure from a headset failure.

Collect evidence before reporting the failure

When the issue persists, prepare a concise reproduction record:

  • Steam Frame and PC operating-system versions.
  • SteamOS, Steam Link and SteamVR versions, including whether any component is on a beta branch.
  • Whether the failure affects foveated image detail, PC gaze data, PC eye-openness data or more than one function.
  • The application name and version, plus whether it expects OpenXR eye gaze, OSC eye openness or another interface.
  • Whether the problem occurs in one application or every tested application.
  • The exact Steam Link setting used for eye-data sharing and the steps that reproduce the failure.
  • Whether the interior camera area was visibly unobstructed and the headset was worn normally.
  • Which comparison tests worked, if any—for example, one OpenXR application receiving data while an OSC application did not.

For problems that occur in SteamVR or during streaming, Valve’s SteamVR announcement directs users to the SteamVR Bug Report forum and asks them to include a SteamVR System Report if possible. Attach the report with the reproduction steps rather than posting only a general statement that tracking does not work. A useful report identifies the failure location and avoids claiming that an untested interface is broken.

What Valve’s public instructions do not establish

The public Valve material covered here does not publish a user-facing eye-tracking calibration workflow, a reset procedure, a camera diagnostic, or a device-specific hardware-repair escalation process. Consequently, there is no verified button sequence that can be presented as an official Steam Frame recalibration fix.

If the interior cameras remain unobstructed, the headset is worn normally, the relevant sharing path is enabled, the software matches the feature being tested and multiple applications reproduce the failure, use current Valve support documentation and the SteamVR reporting route for the next step. Avoid opening the headset or purchasing accessories as a supposed repair. If Valve publishes a device-specific calibration or service instruction later, follow that current instruction rather than a generic headset procedure.

A compact decision path

  1. Ask what is missing: gaze-directed foveated detail, OpenXR gaze data or OSC eye-openness data.
  2. For a PC app, identify its interface: OpenXR eye gaze and OSC eye openness are separate paths.
  3. For OpenXR, enable the relevant eye-data sharing option in Steam Link and verify that the application supports XR_EXT_eye_gaze_interaction.
  4. For OSC eye openness, check the SteamVR 2.18.2 beta note’s SteamOS 0.4.3-or-higher requirement and confirm the current branch status before updating.
  5. For headset behavior, check normal fit and obvious obstruction around the two inward-facing cameras without opening or adjusting the headset.
  6. Compare applications and record versions. A one-app failure is different evidence from a system-wide failure.
  7. Report persistent SteamVR or streaming failures in the SteamVR Bug Report forum with a SteamVR System Report when possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a PC app receiving no gaze data prove Steam Frame eye tracking is broken?

No. The app may not support the interface, or Steam Link eye-data sharing may be disabled. Test the app’s documented OpenXR or OSC path and compare another application before judging the headset cameras.

Is SteamOS 0.4.3 required for all Steam Frame eye tracking?

No. Valve’s October 1, 2026 SteamVR 2.18.2 beta note specifies SteamOS 0.4.3 or higher for Steam Frame eye-openness information exposed through OSC. It does not establish that version as a requirement for foveated streaming or every eye-tracking function.

What is the difference between OpenXR eye gaze and OSC eye openness?

OpenXR eye gaze uses the XR_EXT_eye_gaze_interaction path described for Steam Link when eye-data sharing is enabled. OSC eye openness is a separate output that an application must support and that has the feature-specific SteamOS requirement described in Valve’s beta note.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I recalibrate or reset Steam Frame eye tracking?

Valve’s public product and announcement pages do not provide a user calibration sequence, reset command or camera diagnostic. Check normal fit and visible obstructions only; do not invent a button sequence or open the headset.

Are prescription inserts or other accessories an eye-tracking fix?

No. Valve lists Zenni prescription inserts and other accessories, but does not identify them as remedies for an eye-tracking fault. Do not buy an accessory solely to troubleshoot this symptom.

Where should I report a persistent SteamVR or streaming failure?

Valve directs users to the SteamVR Bug Report forum and asks them to include a SteamVR System Report if possible. Include versions, the affected interface, the application, the exact reproduction steps and whether the failure occurs in one or every tested app.

The Bottom Line

First decide whether the failure is missing foveated detail, missing OpenXR gaze data or missing OSC eye-openness data. Then check the matching Steam Link setting, application interface and feature-specific version requirement. Inspect the two interior cameras for obvious obstruction and wear the headset normally, but do not open or recalibrate it using an unverified procedure. If controlled app comparisons still reproduce the problem, report the SteamVR or streaming failure with a System Report and detailed version and reproduction information.
