Steam Frame is currently a waitlist purchase, not an instant checkout. Valve’s October 9, 2026 update says individual reservation holders can see an estimated purchase-email window—either by December or in 2027—on the logged-in Steam Frame product page. Before joining or keeping a place, decide whether a streaming-first Steam VR headset fits your network and library, choose the 256GB or 1TB model (the choice is locked to the reservation), and confirm that Valve ships to your region.
What Steam Frame is—and who should buy it
Steam Frame is Valve’s wireless headset and controller kit for Steam VR and non-VR play. Valve positions it as streaming-first: the strongest case is a buyer who wants to play a PC Steam library over a low-latency wireless link, while retaining the option to run a growing selection of VR and non-VR titles on the headset itself.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That model makes the purchase more dependent on your home network and game habits than on the headset’s headline resolution alone. A nearby, capable Wi-Fi setup and a PC that can run the games you want to stream are central requirements. Standalone play is available, but support is game-specific and the launch count of more than 100 Steam Frame Standalone Verified games was a dated Valve figure, not a permanent catalog guarantee.

- Choose 256GB if you will stream most large games, use a microSD card for expansion, or want the lower entry price.
- Choose 1TB if you expect a substantial standalone library and want more internal space without managing storage as often.
- Wait or skip if you need immediate delivery, depend on a game that is not on the current standalone-verified list, or cannot place the headset and wireless equipment close enough for a stable connection.
How the reservation and purchase queue works
The 2026 launch timeline
Valve opened Steam Frame signups on September 14, 2026, closed the initial signup period on September 17, and began fulfillment on September 18 after randomizing reservation order. The October 9 update says reservation holders can log in to the Steam Frame product page and see their expected purchase-email window. Valve has shown some accounts a window by December and others a window in 2027; the estimate displayed for your account is the one that applies to you.

Joining after the original signup period
New signups remain possible, but Valve places each new entrant at the end of the waitlist in the order they join. A late signup is therefore a waitlist position, not an indication that a unit is available for immediate purchase.
What the purchase email means
A reservation does not charge you or automatically ship a headset. When your turn arrives, Valve sends a purchase email. You then have 72 hours to complete the order; Valve states that it will move to the next person if the purchase is not completed within that period. Monitor both the email address on your Steam account and the account page so a message is not missed.
Model and region choices are binding
At signup, you selected either the 256GB or 1TB model. Valve’s FAQ says the model could not be changed after the September randomization. Canceling the reservation or leaving the waitlist releases that place, so do not cancel merely to try to switch configurations.
Where Steam Frame can be ordered
Valve’s launch announcement identifies direct Steam shipping to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and Australia. For Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, it names KOMODO as the authorized distributor. The announcement said South Korea would ship at a later date. Eligibility, distributor arrangements, taxes, and queue timing can change, so check the live product page or the named distributor for your location before making plans.
| Buyer location | Documented ordering route | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| United States, Canada, United Kingdom, European Union, Australia | Direct shipment from Steam | Current country eligibility, displayed delivery estimate, and local checkout total |
| Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong | KOMODO is identified as the authorized distributor | Current distributor listing, reservation process, currency, taxes, and queue |
| South Korea | Launch announcement said shipping would come later | Whether ordering has opened and which seller is currently authorized |
| Other locations | Not stated in the launch announcement | Do not assume international forwarding or warranty coverage; check the live product page |
256GB or 1TB: compare the real trade-off
Both versions use UFS storage and include a microSD card slot. The 1TB model adds capacity but costs more; the right choice depends on how much you install locally rather than on a different processor or display.

Valve says these announcement prices include VAT where applicable. They are not a promise that the live store will show the same total on your order date; verify the current regional price at checkout.
When 256GB is sensible
- You expect to stream most demanding PC games instead of installing them on the headset.
- Your standalone library is modest or you are comfortable moving titles to a microSD card.
- The lower price matters more than keeping many large standalone games installed at once.
When 1TB earns its premium
- You plan to use Steam Frame as a standalone device frequently and want a large internal library.
- You prefer not to manage installs between internal storage and microSD.
- The additional cost is acceptable for convenience; Valve does not list a different display, processor, memory capacity, or battery for this model.
The available product information does not state the usable capacity after system files or a maximum supported microSD size. Treat the slot as expansion flexibility, not as a substitute for a capacity figure Valve has not published.

The following are Valve’s published specifications. They are not independent measurements, and Valve notes that some specifications may change before availability.
| Component | Valve-listed specification | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 | Supports the announced standalone and wireless-streaming design; no independent benchmark is provided. |
| Memory | 16GB unified LPDDR5X RAM | Shared by the system and applications; no separate graphics-memory figure is stated. |
| Display | Two 2160 × 2160 LCD panels, one per eye | High per-eye resolution on paper; clarity also depends on lens fit, IPD, and streamed image quality. |
| Refresh rate | 72–144Hz; 144Hz is experimental | Do not treat 144Hz as a guaranteed mode for every game or connection. |
| Lenses | Custom pancake lenses | Designed for a compact optical path; fit and adjustment still determine your view. |
| Field of view | Up to 110 degrees | “Up to” is a maximum specification, not a measured value for every face or setting. |
| IPD | Target range 60–70mm | Measure or estimate your interpupillary distance before ordering; people outside the target range may not get an ideal view. |
| Glasses clearance | Maximum glasses width 140mm | Measure the frame width; wider frames may not fit safely. |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 7; dual radios for concurrent 5GHz Wi-Fi and 6GHz VR streaming | Your router, channel conditions, walls, and placement still determine actual performance. |
| Included PC link | Wireless adapter using Wi-Fi 6E for a direct low-latency PC link | Useful for a direct connection path; it does not establish a particular latency on your computer. |
| Battery | 21.6Wh rechargeable battery | Battery runtime is not stated and has not been independently tested in the available materials. |
| Charging | Rear USB-C 2.0 port; 45W maximum charging input | Use a suitable charger; the maximum input is not a runtime claim. |
| Weight | 440g with core module and headstrap; core module alone 185g | Compare the complete worn weight, not only the removable module. |
| Tracking cameras | Four outward-facing monochrome cameras and two interior eye-tracking cameras | Base-device passthrough is monochrome; color passthrough requires the documented camera accessory. |
Streaming, network layout, and standalone play
Plan the wireless path before the headset arrives
Steam Frame’s streaming-first design means the room layout matters. Place your PC and wireless equipment where walls and competing networks are minimized, and make sure your computer can run the streamed VR title at the image quality and frame rate you expect. Valve’s Wi-Fi 7 and dual-radio specifications describe the headset’s capabilities; they do not guarantee results on a particular router, internet connection, or apartment spectrum environment.
The included Wi-Fi 6E adapter is intended to provide a direct low-latency PC link. That can simplify the path between the PC and headset, but you still need a compatible computer setup and clear physical placement. A crowded 5GHz or 6GHz band, distant access point, or a PC that is already GPU-limited can produce stutter even when the headset is operating within its specifications.

Check games individually for standalone use
Valve reported more than 100 Steam Frame Standalone Verified games at launch. That number is tied to the 2026 launch announcement and can change as titles are added or their status changes. Search Valve’s current standalone-verified list for every game you consider essential; do not infer support from a game’s availability on desktop Steam VR.

Half-Life: Alyx redemption
After signing in to Steam Frame, a device can redeem one copy of Half-Life: Alyx through Settings. A customer who already owns the title cannot redeem a second copy. This is a one-device redemption benefit, not a transferable extra license.
Fit, glasses, and passthrough accessories
Prescription inserts and frame dimensions
Valve identifies prescription inserts made by Zenni as an accessory option. Check the current insert listing, supported prescription range, and fit for your exact frame before purchasing. The headset’s stated maximum glasses width is 140mm; measure your frames rather than relying on a visual estimate. If your IPD is outside the 60–70mm target range, consider whether the optical fit is acceptable before committing to a non-immediate reservation.
Color passthrough and spatial capture
Valve lists the Arcturus Vision Camera as a plug-and-play accessory for 5K HDR color passthrough and spatial video capture. The base headset’s outward-facing passthrough cameras are monochrome, so do not expect color passthrough from the headset alone. Confirm current stock, compatibility, mounting requirements, and regional availability before adding the camera.
Steam Frame Compatible products
Valve marks products carrying the Steam Frame Compatible designation as tested to work with the headset. The mark addresses compatibility testing; it does not establish comfort, availability, or fit for every user. Check the live product information for the specific item.

First-party accessories and extra costs
Valve’s September 14 announcement lists three first-party checkout add-ons. The prices below are the announced US prices; regional prices, taxes, stock, and eligibility should be checked during your purchase flow.
| Accessory | Announced US price | Important restriction or use |
|---|---|---|
| 45W PSU with 2.5m cable | US$29 | Listed as an add-to-cart option during Steam Frame checkout. |
| Ergonomic Accessories Kit | US$59 | Listed as an add-to-cart option during Steam Frame checkout. |
| Accessory Replacement Kit | US$49 | Includes face gasket, head cushion, and standard light blocker; listed as an add-to-cart option during checkout. |
Valve describes these first-party kits as checkout add-ons for customers purchasing Steam Frame. Do not assume they are separately orderable from the same flow or available in every region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical reservation and ordering checklist
- Confirm the current queue status. Sign in to Steam and open the Steam Frame product page. Record the purchase-email window shown for your account rather than relying on a general launch estimate.
- Verify regional eligibility. Check whether Steam ships directly to your country or whether the current route uses an authorized distributor.
- Choose storage deliberately. Compare your expected standalone installs with the 256GB price, 1TB price, and your willingness to use a microSD card. The selected model cannot be changed after the randomized reservation assignment.
- Audit your network. Identify the room where you will play, the distance to your router or included adapter, and likely 5GHz/6GHz interference. Confirm that your PC is suitable for the VR games you want to stream.
- Check fit. Measure IPD if possible, measure glasses width if you wear glasses, and decide whether you need prescription inserts.
- Review the standalone list. Verify each must-play title on Valve’s current Steam Frame Standalone Verified list instead of relying on the launch count.
- Budget accessories separately. Add only the PSU, ergonomic kit, replacement kit, camera, or prescription inserts that solve a known need, and confirm their current regional price and stock.
- Watch for the purchase email. When it arrives, complete checkout within 72 hours or Valve may release your place to the next person.
- Recheck the final cart. Review storage model, shipping address, taxes, accessories, and the displayed delivery estimate before submitting payment.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a signup is an order
A waitlist entry does not reserve an immediately shipping unit. The account page and purchase email determine when you can actually buy.
Expecting to switch from 256GB to 1TB later
The reservation model was fixed after randomization. Canceling to start over gives up the existing position and sends a new signup to the end of the line.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUsing the launch game count as a compatibility guarantee
“More than 100” was Valve’s launch figure. Verify current status for the games you care about, especially if standalone play is your main reason for buying.

Budgeting from the US announcement price
Valve listed prices in several currencies and said VAT is included where applicable, but the live store is authoritative for your location. Currency conversion from the US figure can produce the wrong total.
Expecting color passthrough from the base headset
The outward-facing cameras on the base device provide monochrome passthrough. Color passthrough and spatial capture are associated with the separately listed camera accessory.
Treating specifications as test results
No independent battery-life measurement, latency test, visual-quality comparison, or performance benchmark is provided in the available product materials. Use the published numbers to check fit and requirements, not to predict a guaranteed frame rate or runtime.
What to verify immediately before paying
- The product page still shows your expected order window and the reservation is attached to the intended Steam account.
- Your country, delivery address, taxes, and warranty or distributor terms are accepted at checkout.
- The selected storage model matches the reservation; changing it may not be possible.
- The final price reflects the correct currency and any accessories you intentionally added.
- Your glasses width, IPD, and prescription-insert plan are compatible with the headset’s stated fit limits.
- The games you expect to run standalone remain on the current verified list, while streamed games have a realistic PC and network path.
Bottom line: reserve only when the wait and streaming model fit
Steam Frame is a sensible reservation for a Steam-focused player who accepts a queue, has a strong local wireless setup, and values the option to install selected games on the headset. The 256GB model minimizes the initial outlay and works best when streaming and microSD expansion cover your habits; the 1TB model buys internal-space convenience at a clearly higher price. Neither model removes the need to verify regional shipping, standalone game support, fit, and the final purchase window on Valve’s live page.
