The event, held with the Historical Construction Equipment Association, paired live demonstrations with static displays of antique tractors, classic trucks, steam rollers and road-building equipment.
What visitors saw at the Fall Steam Up
The museum’s event was described as a one-of-a-kind celebration of vintage steam-powered machinery. Rather than viewing a silent exhibit, visitors could watch the Erie shovel dig during a live demonstration before the equipment was put away for winter. Other machinery remained on display, including antique tractors, classic trucks, steam rollers and road-building equipment.

How an Erie steam shovel works
A wood-fired boiler supplies the power
The Erie shovel uses a boiler heated by burning wood. The boiler produces steam pressure, which supplies the machine’s motive power. This is a fundamentally different energy system from the diesel engines used on later construction equipment: heat from combustion is first converted into steam pressure, then used to drive the machine’s mechanisms.

Cables and pulleys move the shovel
Instead of modern hydraulic cylinders and hoses, the shovel transmits motion mechanically through cables and pulleys. Charlie Huson of Tiny Township described it as “a boiler and wood fired, true steam power, all cables and pulleys, as opposed to hydraulics now.” That arrangement lets an operator raise, lower and swing the digging equipment through a visible network of mechanical parts.
Huson said the machine’s operation makes its simplicity easy to see: “You can see it when he’s digging, how well it works and the simplicity.” The moving cables, pulleys and digging gear expose the power path that is usually hidden inside modern machinery.

Steam construction equipment compared with later machines
The Fall Steam Up offered a practical way to distinguish historical steam equipment from the hydraulic construction machinery familiar on today’s job sites. The comparison below stays general because the report does not identify a particular modern machine or provide specifications for one.

When steam gave way to diesel and gasoline
Steam construction machinery remained in use into the 1930s and early 1940s, according to Reg Johnston of the Historical Construction Equipment Association. Johnston said diesel and gasoline engines eventually displaced it. His statement describes a broad transition rather than a single changeover date: older steam machines could remain in service after newer engine types had appeared.

Huson connected steam shovels with major canal and lock-building projects of the late 1800s and early 1900s, while acknowledging that he was guessing about that particular historical connection. He also recalled that diesels were “out by 1916,” and that equipment before then was wood-fired and steam-powered. Those remarks are recollections and estimates reported locally, not a universal date for every construction machine or region.

It is no longer manufactured
Johnston’s answer to what makes steam engines unique today was blunt: “There aren’t any,” referring to new steam construction engines being made. The machines seen at preservation events therefore represent a closed manufacturing era rather than a current product category.

The mechanics are visible
Steam equipment makes its operating process unusually legible. A wood fire heats the boiler, steam provides pressure, and cables and pulleys carry the movement to the shovel. Visitors can follow that sequence with their eyes while the machine digs, something that is harder to do with enclosed modern powertrains.
Nostalgia has a practical effect
Johnston said the appeal is “nostalgia, really. They’re just neat to have.” That nostalgia is reinforced by the machines’ rarity and by the chance to see them perform the work for which they were built. A static display shows age and scale; a live steam-up demonstrates that the historic mechanism still functions.

What the museum event means for preservation
The Fall Steam Up combined preservation with operation. Static displays protected the broader story of construction history, while the Erie demonstration showed how the equipment actually moved material. Working demonstrations also explain why restoration is valuable to audiences who may never encounter steam construction machinery in ordinary life.
For visitors interested in engineering history, the event’s central lesson is straightforward: construction technology did not jump directly from hand tools to modern hydraulics. Steam shovels occupied an important period in between, using boilers and mechanical transmission to scale up excavation and road building. The machines’ rarity today is precisely what made the demonstration notable.
