Steam Early Access vs itch.io: Which Platform Is Better for Indie Games?

For most commercial PC games with a stable, playable build, Steam Early Access is the stronger primary storefront. It combines a public release state with wishlists, launch notifications, reviews, community tools, refunds and store-event infrastructure. itch.io is usually better for experiments and creator-controlled distribution: you can choose the platform revenue share, set a zero minimum price, offer pay-what-you-want downloads, run bundles or crowdfunding, and publish prototypes with fewer assumptions about a conventional launch.

Neither platform guarantees sales. Steam provides more built-in launch machinery, but its own visibility guidance says exposure depends on customer-response signals. itch.io gives you more control over pricing and access models, but you generally need to bring more of the audience yourself. The best choice follows from your game’s maturity, audience, monetization and willingness to operate a storefront.

Steam Early Access and itch.io solve different launch problems

Steam Early Access is a public Steam release state for games that are playable but still in development. You sell the game, collect feedback, update the build and communicate with customers before declaring the project complete. Early Access is therefore both a commercial launch and a promise to maintain a changing product.

itch.io is a flexible publishing platform rather than one single launch program. A seller can publish a finished game, prototype, downloadable build, browser game, demo, tool or evolving project. Its early-access support is one option among several, alongside free distribution, pay-what-you-want pricing, pre-orders, bundles and crowdfunding.

That difference matters. Steam is designed around a standardized store experience and a large account-based audience. itch.io is designed around creator control. Choosing between them is less about which site is universally “better” and more about whether you need storefront infrastructure or pricing and access flexibility.

At-a-glance comparison

Decision factor Steam Early Access itch.io
Entry cost Steam Direct app fee. The fee is non-refundable but can be recouped after the app reaches $1,000 in Adjusted Gross Revenue, according to current Steamworks documentation. No fixed platform cut is required. You choose the itch.io revenue share; payment-provider fees, taxes, VAT and other charges still reduce your proceeds.
Revenue control The sources cited here do not state a current standard revenue percentage. Check your commercial agreement and current Steamworks terms before budgeting. Open revenue sharing: you can set the itch.io share to 10%, 30% or even 0%.
Pricing and access Standard store pricing, discounts, Early Access and full-release transitions. Free minimum price, pay-what-you-want, pre-orders, bundles, crowdfunding, rewards and early-access content.
Discovery and launch Wishlists, release and discount notifications, Early Access new-release placement, possible New and Trending, top-seller and tag exposure, community features and store events. Creator-controlled pages and distribution. No comparable audience-size or algorithmic-reach figure is established by the official material cited here.
Feedback and trust Public reviews. Reviews from Early Access are labeled until full release. Steam’s refund policy applies during Early Access. Early-access content is supported, but the cited material does not define one platform-wide review and refund regime equivalent to Steam’s.
Best fit A game ready for public play, wishlist building, reviews, regular updates and structured launch events. Experimental, niche, free, pay-what-you-want, bundle, crowdfunding or highly creator-controlled releases.

How Steam Early Access works

You release a real, purchasable game

Steam Early Access is not a private beta. Customers purchase access to the current build and expect to receive updates as development continues. Your store page should explain what is playable now, what is planned, how long you expect development to last and which features may change or never ship. A game that is only a technical prototype, has no repeatable core loop or cannot be supported with updates is a poor Early Access candidate.

Before opening sales, prepare the Steam app through Steam Direct and complete the store, build, legal and payment requirements in Steamworks. The Steam Direct app fee is non-refundable, but Valve’s current documentation says it becomes recoupable once the app reaches $1,000 in Adjusted Gross Revenue. Treat that threshold as a recovery condition, not as a guarantee that the launch will cover development costs.

Wishlists create a notification channel, not an automatic ranking boost

When a game releases in Early Access or reaches full release, wishlisted users may receive an email and/or mobile push notification. Steam also documents wishlist notifications for qualifying discounts; the named threshold in the current wishlist documentation is a 20% discount. These messages can turn an audience you built before launch into a measurable first-day group.

Wishlists are not a simple algorithmic popularity score. Steamworks’ visibility guidance says wishlists are “not a factor” in algorithmic visibility in most cases, while still being important for notifications. Store exposure depends on customer-response signals such as purchases, play and engagement. A large wishlist count helps you reach interested users, but it does not force a placement on every Steam surface.

Reviews are public and remain labeled during Early Access

Customers can review an Early Access game. Those reviews are labeled as Early Access until the game leaves that state, so readers can distinguish feedback on an unfinished build from feedback on the completed release. This creates accountability: a weak launch build, slow updates or a major change in direction can become visible to every later buyer.

Plan a communication rhythm before launch. Changelogs, known-issue lists, in-game feedback channels and clear explanations of scope changes reduce the chance that customers interpret ordinary development work as abandonment. Do not promise a date or feature you cannot support; a public review history preserves both positive and negative impressions.

Refunds still apply

Steam Support states: “Regardless of a game’s Early Access status, the Steam Refund Policy will still apply should you choose to request one.” Early Access does not remove the normal refund expectations. Your sales forecast should therefore account for refunds, especially if the first build is short, unstable or marketed more aggressively than its current content justifies.

A refund policy is also a design constraint. Put the strongest repeatable loop in the first session, disclose technical limitations on the store page and test installation, saving, controller support and basic performance before launch. Customers should be able to evaluate the game honestly inside the period in which a refund may be requested.

Steam offers standardized launch surfaces

Steam can place an Early Access title in new-release areas and, depending on customer response, in surfaces such as New and Trending, top-seller lists or tag-based discovery. Participation in sales and other store events can create additional attention. Valve’s marketing overview has cited one trillion impressions per day; that is a vendor marketing claim, not an independent estimate of the audience your game will receive.

Use these surfaces as opportunities, not forecasts. Conversion from a store impression depends on the capsule art, trailer, price, reviews, hardware requirements and the game itself. A polished page with a clear first-minute promise is more useful than assuming a placement will arrive.

How itch.io works

You control the platform share

itch.io has described its model as open revenue sharing since March 2015. The seller chooses the itch.io share and can set it to 10%, 30% or even 0%. A lower platform share leaves more of the listed price with you, but it also leaves you responsible for generating traffic, supporting customers and deciding how much of each sale to reinvest in the project.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Your chosen share is not the only deduction. itch.io’s payment guidance gives a general payment-provider example of $0.30 plus 2.9%; actual costs can vary by provider, transaction, currency and account configuration. Taxes, VAT and other charges can also reduce proceeds. Model the net amount per sale rather than treating your chosen itch.io percentage as the complete cost.

Flexible pricing supports unusual projects

You can set a zero minimum price, allowing free or pay-what-you-want downloads. That is useful for a prototype, a short experimental game, a community test or a project whose main goal is reach and feedback rather than immediate revenue. You can also ask for payment before download, use pre-orders, bundle several projects, run crowdfunding and offer rewards.

These models change what “success” means. A free build can maximize installations but require another funding plan. A pay-what-you-want page can reveal whether an audience values the project without blocking access. Crowdfunding can finance continued work, but it creates an obligation to communicate progress and deliver the promised rewards. Bundles can expand reach while lowering the effective price of each title.

Early access is one content setting, not a separate commercial identity

itch.io supports early-access content, so you can publish an evolving build while retaining control over the page, files, price and audience relationship. This suits games whose communities already gather on a developer site, Discord server, mailing list or social channel. It is also useful when you want to distribute multiple builds, source files, bonus material or platform-specific downloads in one place.

The trade-off is that the cited itch.io material does not establish one universal review and refund framework equivalent to Steam’s. Define your own customer-support rules, explain what buyers receive, keep download files organized and state how updates and refunds will be handled. Clear expectations are essential when the platform gives you more freedom.

Which platform keeps more of your money?

Steam: budget around an unknown commercial percentage

The material available for this comparison does not state a current standard Steam revenue percentage. Do not insert an old or assumed rate into your forecast. Verify the commercial terms that apply to your agreement, then add the Steam Direct app fee and account for refunds, taxes, payment processing and any other deductions shown in your reporting.

itch.io: choose the share, then calculate transaction costs

itch.io gives you a visible lever: the platform share can be set to 0% or a higher amount. A 0% setting does not mean a sale is free of costs. Payment-provider fees, taxes, VAT and other charges still apply, and low-priced transactions can be affected more by fixed fees such as the cited $0.30 example.

For each price point, calculate: listed price minus your chosen itch.io share, payment-provider percentage and fixed fee, applicable tax or VAT, refunds and any currency-conversion cost. Compare that net figure with the verified Steam terms, not with an assumed headline percentage.

Choose Steam Early Access when infrastructure is the bottleneck

  • Your core loop is already playable. A stranger should be able to install the game, understand its objective and find repeatable value without a personal walkthrough.
  • You can support public feedback. Set an update cadence, maintain a known-issues list and reserve time for compatibility and customer support.
  • You need wishlists and launch notifications. Steam can notify wishlisted users at release and for qualifying discounts, including the documented 20% discount threshold.
  • You want public reviews and community tools. These add trust and discovery, but they also expose quality problems immediately.
  • You can meet Steam’s submission and refund expectations. The storefront gives structure in exchange for compliance with its process and policies.

Choose itch.io when control is the bottleneck

  • Your project is experimental or unusually scoped. Prototypes, short games, tools and evolving concepts can launch without pretending to be a conventional premium release.
  • You need free or pay-what-you-want access. A zero minimum price removes a barrier for testers and communities.
  • You want to set the platform share. Open revenue sharing lets you decide how much to contribute to the platform.
  • You are funding development directly. Crowdfunding, pre-orders, bundles and rewards can be part of the same project page.
  • You already have an audience. If your mailing list, community or creator network supplies traffic, you may value control more than algorithmic discovery.

When publishing on both makes sense

Dual distribution can combine Steam’s account, notification and review system with itch.io’s flexible pricing and community access. It also doubles operational work. Before listing on both, decide which store is the primary entitlement for each customer, how keys or downloads will be delivered, where support requests go and how updates are synchronized.

Set a consistent product promise

Do not let one page promise a feature or release date that the other page omits. Keep the build number, roadmap language, screenshots and system requirements aligned. If itch.io receives experimental branches or bonus files that Steam does not, label them clearly so customers understand the difference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check price and discount consistency

Different currencies, taxes and platform fees can make identical nominal prices produce different net revenue. Decide whether a discount is store-specific or global, and communicate the reason when customers can buy the same game through two storefronts at different prices.

Plan support and review handling

Steam reviews remain on Steam, while itch.io customers may contact you through the page or your own channels. Assign time to answer technical questions, process refunds according to each store’s rules and publish one authoritative changelog. A two-store launch is successful only if customers receive the same level of care on both.

A practical launch decision process

  1. Test the build with strangers. If testers cannot complete the first session without your help, continue development before a public Early Access sale.
  2. Write the business model in one sentence. Examples: “Premium game with quarterly updates,” “free prototype seeking community feedback” or “crowdfunded project with paid rewards.” The sentence should point toward one platform.
  3. Estimate net revenue. Include the Steam Direct fee and verified Steam terms, or itch.io’s chosen share plus payment-provider, tax, VAT and refund deductions.
  4. Measure your audience source. If most potential players come from Steam wishlists and store browsing, Steam’s infrastructure matters. If they come from your own community, itch.io’s control may matter more.
  5. Define update capacity. Early Access customers need visible progress. Choose a platform only if you can maintain the promised cadence for the next several months.
  6. Choose one primary storefront. Add the second only when the support, entitlement and pricing plan is documented.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Launching Steam Early Access before the game is reviewable

A vertical slice, a menu and a roadmap are not enough if the public build has no durable loop. Delay the sale until the current version can stand on its own and your store page describes its unfinished areas honestly.

Assuming wishlists guarantee discovery

Wishlists provide notification opportunities; Steam says they are not a visibility factor in most cases. Improve conversion, retention and customer response instead of treating a wishlist total as a promised launch ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calling itch.io’s 0% share “free distribution”

A 0% platform share still leaves payment-provider fees and possible taxes, VAT and other charges. Show your team the net-per-sale calculation before setting a price.

Using pay-what-you-want without a funding plan

Flexible pricing can grow reach while producing little cash. State whether the project is supported by donations, crowdfunding, paid rewards, contract work or a later premium release.

Running two stores without an update owner

Out-of-date files, mismatched version numbers and unanswered support requests damage trust faster than a small launch. Assign one person to verify every release package and changelog on both platforms.

Bottom line

Pick Steam Early Access when you have a commercially viable, playable game and want integrated wishlists, notifications, public reviews, community features and structured store discovery. Pick itch.io when your priority is control: adjustable revenue sharing, free or pay-what-you-want access, bundles, crowdfunding or experimental distribution. Publishing on both can work, but only after you can keep pricing, entitlements, updates and customer support coherent.
