Steam Downloads vs. Other PC Game Launchers: Speed and Bandwidth Controls

Steam and Epic Games Launcher both let you limit download speed and schedule updates, but those controls do not prove either launcher is faster. Windows Delivery Optimization can limit bandwidth for its own automatic updates, while EA’s reviewed help pages offer slow-download troubleshooting but do not document a user-facing speed cap. The right setting depends on whether you want downloads to finish sooner or leave bandwidth available for gaming and other devices.

What a download speed limit does

A bandwidth cap trades download time for a smaller share of your connection. It can help reduce competition with multiplayer games, video calls, streaming, or other devices. Removing a cap may help a slow download only when that cap was holding it back; it cannot guarantee faster service from a busy content server or fix other network problems.

Check units before comparing a launcher’s display with your internet plan. Steam explains that connection speeds are typically measured in bits per second, while Steam downloads are shown in bytes per second: A byte is a group of 8 bits. So, for example, a value in megabytes per second is not directly comparable to the same numerical value in megabits per second. Steam Support explains the conversion and download troubleshooting.

Steam: set a cap, schedule updates, and manage the queue

Limit Steam download speed

  1. Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
  2. Select a bandwidth limit. Steam displays the limit in the Download Manager and in an update dialog when launching a game.

To troubleshoot an unexpectedly slow download, check whether a limit is enabled. Steam also recommends checking the download region and, if needed, trying a nearby region. A region change is a troubleshooting option, not a promise of improvement for a particular connection.

Schedule or prioritize updates

In Steam’s Downloads settings, set a time window for automatic updates; you can override the schedule to download immediately. Per-game automatic-update choices include keeping a game updated, updating only when launched, or prioritizing it for automatic updates. The Download Manager lets you track downloads, reorder the queue, and manage schedules. These controls let you defer or reprioritize work rather than simply maximizing its speed. Steam’s support page covers download settings and content-server troubleshooting.

Epic Games Launcher: control speed, timing, and order

Epic’s Download Manager documents speed limits for fresh installs and updates, automatic-update scheduling, title prioritization, queue reordering, and a setting for whether installs can run during gameplay.

  1. Open Download Manager > Download Settings.
  2. Use Download Speed to set a limit.
  3. Use the manager’s schedule, priority, queue, and gameplay controls to decide when downloads run and which title goes first.

For slow downloads, Epic recommends unchecking Limit Download Speeds and restarting the launcher. Treat that as a diagnostic step: if you set the cap to preserve bandwidth, removing it may let downloads use more of the available connection. Epic also notes that streaming and downloads can compete for bandwidth and contribute to multiplayer lag or disconnections, including when activity is on another device on the network. Epic’s Download Manager instructions and slow-download troubleshooting describe these controls.

Windows Delivery Optimization: a narrower bandwidth control

Windows 10 and Windows 11 offer absolute and percentage bandwidth limits for Delivery Optimization. Microsoft explicitly scopes those limits to Delivery Optimization automatic update downloads; they do not cover manually initiated downloads, such as a manually started Windows or Store download. Do not treat this as a universal cap for every Microsoft Store, Xbox, or third-party game download. Microsoft’s Delivery Optimization guidance explains the scope. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.

EA app and other launchers: what is documented here

EA’s official download guidance recommends clearing the EA app cache, closing background programs, temporarily disconnecting unused network devices, using a wired connection, and checking firewall or antivirus access when downloads are slow. EA also notes that download-management programs and other background activity can affect downloads or gameplay. The reviewed EA pages do not document a user-facing download-speed cap; that does not establish that no such setting exists in every version. See EA app download, install, and update help and EA guidance on background apps.

This comparison covers Steam, Epic Games Launcher, Windows Delivery Optimization, and the cited EA guidance. Current official documentation for Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, and every other PC launcher is not established here, so no claims about their controls are included.

Why one launcher may appear faster

A launcher’s speed display is not a controlled comparison. The download region or content server, network conditions, competing traffic, and local processing can all affect what you see. Steam explicitly points users to region and content-server troubleshooting; Epic and EA identify competing traffic or background activity as relevant factors. Without matched network conditions, server, game, storage, and client settings, there is no sound basis here for declaring one launcher universally fastest.

Choose settings based on the problem

  • Keep bandwidth available while playing: Set a cap or schedule downloads in Steam or Epic. In Epic, you can also control whether installs run during gameplay.
  • Make a slow download use more of your connection: Check that a cap is not enabled. Epic’s troubleshooting step is to turn off Limit Download Speeds and restart the launcher.
  • Check whether speeds are actually comparable: Convert bits and bytes before comparing your ISP plan with the launcher display.
  • Investigate a slow Steam download: Check the selected limit and try the download-region troubleshooting Steam documents.
  • Investigate an EA app download: Follow EA’s cache, background-app, connection, and firewall or antivirus troubleshooting guidance.
  • Limit Windows update traffic: Use Delivery Optimization settings only with the understanding that Microsoft scopes them to automatic Delivery Optimization updates.
