If a Steam demo will not launch, work through Steam’s documented first pass in order: restart Steam and the computer, install operating-system and graphics-driver updates, verify the demo’s files, close non-essential background software, and compare the store page’s requirements with your system. A missing-executable message additionally requires checking antivirus quarantine or blocking. On Linux or Steam Deck, first determine whether the demo has native Linux support or is a Windows build running through Proton.
The order matters because each result narrows the cause. Verification can repair a failed download or corrupted extraction; a quarantine entry points to security software; an operating-system warning points to platform incompatibility; and a new error from the game executable can give the developer a more useful starting point.

Identify the failure before changing anything
Write down the exact message and when it appears. A demo that does nothing after clicking Play has a different diagnostic path from one that displays Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable), crashes after a splash screen, or reports that the game is unavailable on the current platform.

Run Steam’s baseline launch checks
- Exit and restart Steam. Use Steam’s exit command rather than merely closing the library window, start it again, and retry the demo.
- Restart the computer. This clears a process that may still be holding a game file or graphics component open.
- Install pending operating-system updates. Apply the updates offered by Windows, macOS, or Linux, restart if requested, and test again.
- Update the graphics driver. Install the current driver offered for your graphics hardware and operating system, then reboot before launching the demo.
- Read the demo’s store page. Check its listed operating systems and hardware requirements rather than assuming that every Steam title supports your platform.
Steam cautions that machines at or just above a game’s minimum requirements can still have launch problems. Treat the minimum line as a compatibility floor, not a guarantee that every demo will start reliably. If the store page lists a different operating system from the one installed on your computer, file repair will not make the title compatible.

Verify the demo’s installed files
Steam includes a file-integrity check that compares the local installation with the files Steam expects. It is the central repair step for an incomplete download, corruption, or an extracted file that no longer matches the installation.
- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the demo, or open its gear menu.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish before pressing Play again.
Steam notes that verification can take several minutes. Allow it to complete even if the progress appears to pause while files are examined or reacquired. If Steam reports that one or more local configuration files failed verification, that can be normal: configuration files may be intentionally different from the distributed defaults. The important question is whether Steam reacquires missing or damaged program files and whether the launch result changes afterward.
How to interpret the result
- Files are reacquired and the demo launches: the original installation was incomplete or corrupted.
- Files are reacquired but the same error remains: continue with security-software, requirements, and conflict checks; verification has ruled out only some file problems.
- Verification finishes without changing anything: move to platform compatibility and background-software checks rather than repeatedly running the same scan.
- The check cannot complete: record the exact message and proceed to security-software inspection and Steam Support escalation if the failure persists.
Fix the Missing Executable error
Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable) means Steam cannot find or use a file required to start the demo. Steam identifies three practical causes: antivirus or other security software blocked or quarantined the file, the download failed, or the installation became corrupted.

Inspect quarantine and blocking first
- Open the security product protecting the computer.
- Review its quarantine, blocked-items, or detection history for the demo’s installation directory and executable.
- If you trust the demo and obtained it through Steam, restore or allow the file according to that product’s controls.
- Add an exclusion only when you understand what file and folder it covers; broad exclusions weaken protection.
- Return to Steam and run Verify integrity of game files again so Steam can restore anything removed.
Do not restore an executable merely because its name resembles the game. If the security alert identifies a genuine threat, leave the file blocked and contact the developer or Steam Support with the detection details. A restored file that is immediately quarantined again indicates an unresolved security decision, not a successful repair.
When quarantine is empty
An empty quarantine does not prove that the installation is healthy. A failed download or corruption can produce the same missing-file message without a security alert. Verify the files, wait for Steam to finish reacquiring them, and then retry. If the executable disappears again, capture the security product’s event and the Steam verification result for escalation.
Check operating-system and hardware compatibility
Open the demo’s store page and compare its stated operating-system support and hardware requirements with the computer on which you are launching it. Steam’s platform error, Game is not available on your current platform, means the title is not supported on the operating system currently in use. It is not an instruction to keep reinstalling the same files.

Questions to answer
- Does the store page list your operating system, or only another desktop platform?
- Is the demo being launched on the same architecture and edition described by the requirements?
- Does the computer meet the listed processor, memory, graphics, and storage expectations?
- Is it merely at the minimum line, where Steam warns launch problems can still occur?
If the operating system is unsupported, the practical options are to use a supported computer or wait for the developer to provide support. If the system is supported but close to minimum requirements, close other applications, update the graphics driver, and treat an immediate crash as potentially hardware- or driver-sensitive rather than assuming the download is defective.
Remove software conflicts without losing your evidence
Steam’s official guidance is to disable non-essential software while testing. Overlays, monitoring tools, capture utilities, and other background applications can interfere with startup, graphics initialization, or file access. You do not need to uninstall them to perform a useful test.
- Close non-essential applications, including overlays and recording or monitoring utilities.
- Leave Steam running and launch only the demo.
- If it starts, re-enable background tools one at a time until the conflict returns.
- Keep the name and version of the conflicting application in your notes and configure its game-specific exclusion or overlay setting if available.
If closing background software makes no difference, restore your normal setup and continue with the platform and game-specific branches. Avoid changing many unrelated settings at once; otherwise you will not know which change affected the result.

Linux and Steam Deck: separate native support from Proton
Linux troubleshooting has an additional decision point. A demo may offer a native Linux build, or it may be a Windows game launched through Steam Play Proton. Those are different compatibility paths, so identify which one Steam is using before interpreting a crash.
For a native Linux build
- Install current Linux updates and graphics drivers.
- Verify the demo’s files from Library → Properties → Installed Files.
- Close non-essential applications and retry.
- Compare the distribution, architecture, and hardware with the store page’s requirements.
A native build that fails while other native titles work is a strong reason to preserve the exact error and contact the developer. A failure across multiple titles points first toward the system or driver environment.
For a Windows build running through Proton
- Confirm that the demo is intended to run through Proton rather than having native Linux support.
- Update Linux and the graphics driver before changing compatibility settings.
- Verify the installation files.
- Disable non-essential overlays and utilities.
- If the failure remains Proton-specific, look for game-specific community guidance and consider reporting it to Valve’s Proton issue database with complete system details.
Do not describe a Proton failure as proof that the demo is universally broken. The relevant distinction is whether the same title launches natively, under Proton on another configuration, or nowhere on the affected system. That distinction gives the developer or issue tracker a reproducible compatibility question instead of a generic crash report.
Use the game executable to expose a more specific error
When one third-party demo is affected, Steam Support recommends trying its executable directly from the installation folder. Browse to SteamApps/Common/<Game Title>, locate the program file, and launch it once. Windows may show a missing runtime, permission, or graphics error that Steam’s Play button does not display.
Record the exact wording, any named file, and when the message appears. Do not treat direct launching as a permanent replacement for Steam; use it as a diagnostic test. If the executable starts directly but not from Steam, retain both results because the difference can identify a Steam launch parameter or environment conflict. If it fails directly as well, the message is useful evidence for the developer or a technician.
Decide when self-service has reached its limit
Escalate after you have restarted, updated, verified, checked security software, compared requirements, and tested with non-essential software closed. Escalation is justified sooner when the operating system is unsupported, the security product repeatedly removes the executable, or the verification process itself cannot complete.

- Your system report, including operating system and graphics hardware details.
- The demo’s exact title and whether it is native Linux, Windows, or Proton-based in your setup.
- The verification result and whether Steam reacquired files.
- Any antivirus quarantine event or blocked-file record.
- The result of launching the executable from the installation folder.
An uncropped image preserves context that a typed fragment can omit. Include the order of steps that changed the behavior and the point at which the failure returns. This lets support distinguish a missing file, a platform mismatch, and a reproducible game-specific crash.
When to contact the developer or a technician
Contact the demo’s developer when only that title fails after the documented Steam checks, especially if direct execution produces a named dependency or game-specific message. A local PC technician is appropriate when multiple applications fail, the system cannot update correctly, or driver and hardware problems extend beyond Steam. Provide the same evidence rather than starting over with an unstructured description.
Self-service versus escalation: a practical decision guide

What not to do while troubleshooting
- Do not keep reinstalling without first checking quarantine, requirements, and the verification result; the same blocked file can disappear again after every reinstall.
- Do not assume a missing executable always means Steam downloaded nothing. Blocking, failed download, and corruption produce the same visible message.
- Do not treat a normal configuration-file verification warning as proof that the whole installation failed.
- Do not report a Proton issue without identifying whether the demo is native or running as a Windows title.
- Do not send cropped screenshots that hide the title, error code, or surrounding context.
Following this sequence turns a vague launch failure into a classified problem: repaired files, blocked executable, unsupported platform, conflicting software, or a title-specific defect. That classification determines whether the next useful action is another Steam check, a narrowly scoped security change, a supported platform, or an evidence-based support report.
