Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchShort answer: a Windows handheld is the more direct choice for PS5 Remote Play because Sony provides an official Windows app. A Steam Deck can also connect, but its SteamOS setup uses the third-party Chiaki-ng client. Neither option is proven by the available evidence to deliver lower latency, sharper video, or greater reliability; your network, PS5 settings, controls and client configuration matter more than the operating system alone.
The key difference: official Windows software versus a SteamOS client
Both device categories can stream compatible games from your PS5, but they do not reach the console through the same software path.

| Platform | Remote Play software | What is documented | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows handheld | Sony’s PS Remote Play app for Windows | Sony publishes Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11 requirements, setup instructions, controller guidance and video options. | Sony’s requirements are for Windows PCs generally. The page does not certify every gaming handheld model. |
| Steam Deck | Chiaki-ng, a third-party client running on SteamOS | Chiaki-ng documents Steam Deck installation and control mappings, including touchscreen and gyro behavior. | It is not Sony software. Configuration and project support can change as the client evolves. |
| PlayStation Portal | Sony’s dedicated handheld software | Streams compatible games installed on your PS5; the product has an 8-inch LCD and output up to 1080p at 60 frames per second. | It is a dedicated streaming device rather than a general-purpose handheld PC. Cloud streaming has separate subscription and eligibility rules. |
This distinction answers the first buying question: if you want the least experimental software route, choose a Windows handheld. If you already own a Steam Deck or value SteamOS, Chiaki-ng makes PS5 streaming possible, but you should expect a more hands-on setup.
There is no controlled Steam Deck-versus-Windows handheld test in the available material. It would therefore be inaccurate to promise that one platform is inherently smoother, faster or more reliable. Sony explicitly says Remote Play quality and connectivity vary with the network environment.

A PS5 configured for Remote Play
On the console, open Settings > System > Remote Play and enable Remote Play. If you want to wake the PS5 while it is in Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode, enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network. Sign in to the same PlayStation Network account on the handheld client that is associated with the console.
Sony’s overview of the feature is available at https://www.playstation.com/en-us/remote-play/.
A network that meets Sony’s recommendation
- Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the standard minimum recommendation.
- For best performance, Sony recommends a high-speed connection with at least 15 Mbps upload and download.
- Those figures are recommendations, not a latency guarantee. Wi-Fi interference, distance from the router, congestion, the PS5’s connection and other traffic can still affect responsiveness.
Use the 15 Mbps figure as a planning target rather than proof that every game will feel perfect. A fast broadband plan does not automatically mean a low-latency wireless link between the handheld and the PS5.

A compatible controller layout
Sony’s Windows instructions call for connecting a controller by USB. A handheld’s built-in controls may work after you map them to the app, but Sony’s documentation does not promise automatic mapping for every model. On Steam Deck, Chiaki-ng has layouts intended for the device, with additional handling for the touchscreen, gyro and PlayStation-specific controls.

Using a Steam Deck for PS5 Remote Play
Why Chiaki-ng is the relevant route
The Steam Deck OLED runs SteamOS 3, Valve’s Linux-based operating system. Valve’s specifications identify SteamOS 3 as the operating system and list the integrated gamepad controls and HDR OLED display; they do not list a native Sony Remote Play application. Chiaki-ng fills that gap as a third-party Remote Play client with Steam Deck and Linux documentation.
Read Valve’s specifications at https://www.steamdeck.com/en/tech/oled/. Chiaki-ng’s project documentation and current releases are at https://github.com/chiaki-ng/chiaki-ng/blob/main/docs/setup/controlling.md and https://github.com/chiaki-ng/chiaki-ng/releases.
Typical Steam Deck setup sequence
- Switch to Desktop Mode. Use the Steam Deck power menu and select Desktop Mode so you can install and configure the Linux client.
- Install Chiaki-ng. Obtain it through the current method documented by the project. Keep the client updated, because package names, compatibility fixes and setup details can change between releases.
- Register the PS5. Launch Chiaki-ng, select the PS5 discovered on your network, and complete the account/device registration flow requested by the client. The handheld and console must be signed in to the same PlayStation account.
- Choose a Steam layout. Add Chiaki-ng to Steam as a non-Steam game if you want to launch it from Game Mode. Select the project’s Steam Deck-oriented layout or create your own mappings.
- Check touchscreen support. In Game Mode, the controller layout may need native touchscreen support for the PS5 touchpad-style input. Chiaki-ng’s default layout enables native touchscreen behavior; verify it before starting a game that uses the touchpad.
- Return to Game Mode and test. Start a short session on the same network as the PS5. Check the analog sticks, shoulder buttons, touch input, gyro and the on-screen controls before relying on the setup for a long play session.
The exact installation method can vary with SteamOS and Chiaki-ng releases, so use the project’s current instructions rather than copying an old package command from an older guide.
Steam Deck controls and PlayStation features
- Touchscreen: Chiaki-ng documents touchscreen behavior and a Steam Deck layout designed to expose touch input in Game Mode.
- Gyro: The client documents gyro mapping, which can be useful in games that use motion aiming or motion gestures.
- Touchpad commands: Map a button or touchscreen gesture to the PlayStation touchpad action when a game requires it. A layout that only covers ordinary gamepad buttons can leave menus or gameplay actions inaccessible.
- DualSense haptics: Chiaki-ng documents haptic mapping with a DualSense connected by USB.
- Adaptive triggers: The documentation describes adaptive-trigger mapping for a DualSense over USB or Bluetooth, subject to game support and configuration.
These are documented client behaviors, not a guarantee that every game will reproduce all DualSense effects or that every configuration will behave like a directly connected controller. Treat them as options to configure and test.
Steam Deck advantages and compromises
| Potential advantage | What it means in practice | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| SteamOS integration | You can add the client to your Steam library and use the Deck’s normal handheld interface after setup. | The initial installation and registration are less direct than installing Sony’s Windows app. |
| Built-in controls and touchscreen | The Deck can provide sticks, buttons, touch input and gyro without carrying a separate controller. | You may need to edit the layout for touchpad clicks, keyboard entry or a particular game. |
| One device for PC games and streaming | The same handheld can run compatible Steam games and stream the PS5. | Chiaki-ng is a third-party project, so its instructions and compatibility can change independently of Sony. |
Using a Windows handheld for PS5 Remote Play
Sony’s published Windows requirements
Sony’s current PC/Mac support guide lists these requirements for the Windows route:
| Requirement | Sony’s published specification | How to interpret it on a handheld |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 | The handheld must run a supported 64-bit Windows installation. |
| Processor | 7th-generation Intel Core processor or later | This is a general PC requirement, not a certification of a specific handheld model or firmware. |
| Memory | At least 2 GB RAM | Most current gaming handhelds exceed this minimum, but other applications can still affect available resources. |
| Storage | At least 100 MB available storage | This covers the application requirement, not the space needed for other games or Windows updates. |
| Display | 1024 × 768 or higher | The handheld’s built-in panel should exceed the minimum resolution. |
| Other hardware | Sound card and USB port | Audio must be available, and Sony documents USB controller connection. |
Consult Sony’s full setup page at https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/support/games/playstation-remote-play-on-pc-and-mac/. Sony’s page targets Windows PCs generally; it does not state that a particular Windows gaming handheld has been tested or certified.
Windows setup sequence
- Install the current PS Remote Play app for Windows from Sony’s official support flow.
- Enable Remote Play on the PS5 and configure Rest Mode network wake if you want to start sessions while the console is sleeping.
- Connect a controller by USB as Sony’s instructions describe. If you use the handheld’s integrated controls, configure the device’s gamepad-to-Windows mapping and confirm that the app receives each input.
- Sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5.
- Select the PS5 in the app and wait for the connection. The console may need to be on or in Rest Mode with network wake enabled.
- Adjust video options in the app, including available resolution and frame-rate settings, then test on the network where you normally play.
What Windows makes easier—and what it does not
The official app reduces software uncertainty: Sony supplies the application, lists its requirements and documents the connection flow. Windows also gives you access to other PC launchers and utilities, which can be useful if the handheld is intended to replace a small gaming PC.
Recommended Free Tools
That does not automatically make the stream faster. The Windows app still depends on the same PS5, network path and account settings. A handheld’s built-in controls may need extra mapping, and Sony’s documentation does not establish automatic support for every integrated control scheme.

Steam Deck versus Windows handhelds: a practical comparison
| Decision factor | Steam Deck | Windows handheld |
|---|---|---|
| Official Sony application | No native Sony SteamOS app is documented; use Chiaki-ng. | Yes. Sony documents a PS Remote Play app for Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11. |
| Initial setup | Install and register a third-party client, then configure a Steam layout. | Install Sony’s app, sign in, connect a controller and select the PS5. |
| Built-in controls | Chiaki-ng documents Steam Deck mappings, touchscreen and gyro options. | Controls depend on the handheld’s Windows input layer; mapping may be required. |
| Touchpad and motion input | Documented mapping options; test each game and configuration. | Possible through controller or software mapping, but no universal behavior is established by Sony’s PC guide. |
| Haptics and adaptive triggers | Chiaki-ng documents DualSense haptics over USB and adaptive triggers over USB or Bluetooth, subject to support and configuration. | Sony’s cited PC guide documents USB controller use but does not establish identical feature behavior for every handheld setup. |
| Broader use | SteamOS handheld for Steam games and other Linux-compatible software. | General Windows handheld PC with access to Windows software and launchers. |
| Evidence of streaming superiority | None established. | None established. |
Choose based on software comfort and the device’s wider role, not on an assumed frame-rate or latency advantage.
Why network conditions matter more than the logo on the handheld
Bandwidth is only the starting point
Remote Play sends the PS5’s video output to the handheld and returns controller input to the console. Upload and download capacity must be available in both directions, but responsiveness also depends on delay, jitter, packet loss and interference. Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum recommendation can be enough to establish a session, while its 15 Mbps recommendation is intended for better performance; neither number guarantees a particular latency.
Use a repeatable test
- Place the PS5 on a wired connection if practical, or position it close to a strong wireless access point.
- Test the handheld in the room where you will actually play, not only beside the router.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups and video streams on the same network.
- Try a familiar game with camera movement, menu navigation and a short action sequence.
- Compare settings only after the connection is stable; changing resolution and frame rate while other traffic is running can obscure the cause of problems.
Because no controlled comparison establishes a winner between Steam Deck and Windows handhelds, these steps are more useful than choosing a platform based on anecdotal claims that one operating system always has lower latency.
Common problems and fixes
The PS5 is not found
- Confirm Remote Play is enabled on the PS5.
- Check that the app and console use the same PlayStation account.
- If the PS5 is in Rest Mode, verify that it remains connected to the internet and can be turned on from the network.
- Test both devices on the same local network first. A successful local test separates account and console configuration issues from broader network problems.
The picture is blocky or the session disconnects
- Measure whether the connection meets Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum in both directions; target 15 Mbps or more for better headroom.
- Move the handheld closer to the access point or reduce interference.
- Stop competing downloads and uploads.
- Lower the app’s video settings temporarily, then raise them one step at a time after stability returns.
Buttons work but touchpad or gyro input does not
- On Steam Deck, edit the Chiaki-ng layout and confirm native touchscreen support is enabled in Game Mode.
- Map a physical button to the touchpad action if a game requires a click rather than a swipe.
- Check gyro activation and sensitivity in the client layout.
- On Windows, verify that the handheld’s control utility exposes the integrated controls as a standard gamepad and that the Remote Play app receives those inputs.
Haptics or adaptive triggers are missing
For Chiaki-ng, use the documented DualSense connection method and check whether the game supports the effect. The client’s documentation describes haptics over USB and adaptive triggers over USB or Bluetooth, but those features remain conditional on game support and configuration. Sony’s Windows guide does not establish identical behavior for every Windows handheld arrangement.

When a Windows handheld is the better purchase
- You want Sony’s documented application rather than a community client.
- You already use Windows software, launchers or accessories and want one general-purpose handheld PC.
- You prefer installing an app and signing in over managing a SteamOS desktop-mode setup.
- You are buying specifically for PS5 streaming and do not want to troubleshoot third-party mappings.
Even then, verify the particular handheld’s Windows installation, controls and display. Sony’s published requirements describe the software category, not a guarantee that every model will launch, map controls or perform identically.
When a Steam Deck is the better fit
- You already own a Steam Deck and want to add PS5 streaming without buying another device.
- You prefer SteamOS and are comfortable installing a third-party client.
- You value a documented Steam Deck layout with touchscreen and gyro options.
- You want a handheld centered on Steam games, with Remote Play as an additional use rather than its sole purpose.
Budget for setup time and keep the Chiaki-ng documentation available when SteamOS or the client changes. The Deck is not disqualified by its lack of a Sony app; it simply uses a different maintenance path.
Where PlayStation Portal fits
PlayStation Portal is Sony’s purpose-built reference point. Sony lists an 8-inch LCD and output up to 1080p at 60 fps, and it is designed to stream compatible games installed on your PS5 over Wi-Fi. See the product specifications at https://direct.playstation.com/en-us/buy-accessories/playstation-portal-remote-player-midnight-black.

It does not replace the broader software flexibility of SteamOS or Windows, and it is not the right comparison if you need to run native PC games.
Sony also announced cloud streaming for eligible PlayStation Plus Premium members on November 5, 2025, including support for certain digital PS5 games in a user’s library. Cloud streaming is a separate mode from Remote Play: it depends on subscription, supported games, account rules and regional availability. Details are in Sony’s announcement at https://blog.playstation.com/2025/11/05/cloud-streaming-officially-arrives-on-playstation-portal-today-with-new-support-for-digital-ps5-games-in-your-library/.
A purchase checklist
- Already own a Steam Deck: Try Chiaki-ng first; your main cost is setup time, not another handheld.
- Buying mainly for PS5 Remote Play: A Windows handheld has the clearest official software route.
- Want a dedicated PS5 device: Consider Portal, accepting its narrower purpose.
- Need native PC gaming flexibility: Compare SteamOS and Windows based on the other games and applications you use, not Remote Play alone.
- Have weak or congested Wi-Fi: Improve the network before changing handhelds. Neither platform can compensate for unstable connectivity.
- Care about touchpad, gyro or trigger effects: Check the exact client mapping and test the games you play; do not assume feature parity.
Bottom line
For PS5 Remote Play alone, Windows handhelds win on software directness because Sony officially documents the Windows app. Steam Deck remains a viable option through Chiaki-ng, with useful documented touchscreen, gyro and PlayStation-control mappings, but it requires third-party setup. The available evidence does not establish a performance winner. Pick Windows for the official path, Steam Deck for SteamOS and existing-device value, or Portal for a dedicated Sony streaming experience—and make your network the first troubleshooting priority.
