Choose a Windows handheld such as the ROG Xbox Ally or ROG Ally X if you need native access to Xbox PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store, GOG, and several launchers from one Windows installation.
Neither platform guarantees that every PC game will work perfectly. The deciding factors are where you own your games, whether each title supports the device’s operating system and anti-cheat requirements, how much setup you will tolerate, and the model’s current price.

The practical difference: SteamOS versus Windows
A Steam Deck boots into SteamOS, Valve’s Linux-based operating system. Valve says its Proton compatibility layer enables many Windows games to run on SteamOS, but Proton is not a universal emulator: compatibility is assessed title by title. Valve’s Steam Deck software information explains the Deck Verified program, which labels how individual games behave on Deck.
A Windows handheld runs the same Windows game launchers used on a desktop PC. That makes the operating-system question simpler for games distributed through Xbox, Epic, GOG, or other Windows storefronts, but it does not remove game-specific requirements. A title can still fail because of anti-cheat software, a launcher dependency, unsupported drivers, an account restriction, or controls designed for a keyboard and mouse.

Think of the choice as a library-and-workflow decision rather than a simple performance ranking. The cited product pages do not provide a controlled benchmark or independent usability test, so battery life, frame rates, thermals, and comfort should be checked against the exact model and game you plan to use.
Which device fits your game library?
| Question | Steam Deck with SteamOS | Windows handhelds covered here |
|---|---|---|
| Steam games | Steam is the native front end, with Deck Verified information on supported titles. | Steam runs as a Windows launcher; ASUS lists it among the launchers supported on the ROG Ally X. |
| Epic Games Store and GOG | SteamOS is not Windows. Valve’s Proton documentation describes Windows-game support generally, but the cited Valve pages do not establish an effortless native Epic or GOG launcher workflow. | ASUS explicitly lists Epic and GOG as compatible launchers for the ROG Ally X. |
| PC Game Pass | Do not assume every Game Pass PC title installs and behaves like a Steam game on SteamOS; the cited sources do not establish that workflow. | ASUS presents the ROG Xbox Ally as a Windows handheld for PC games included with Game Pass and lists Xbox Game Pass for the ROG Ally X. |
| Per-game checks | Use the game’s Deck Verified status and its own system requirements. | Use Xbox’s handheld-compatibility information where available, then check the title’s Windows requirements. |
| Multiple launchers | Possible in some cases, but setup and compatibility can vary by launcher and game. | Windows provides the conventional desktop versions of the launchers, although each may have its own updates, sign-in and control requirements. |
ASUS’s launcher claims are documented on the ROG Ally X product page. Xbox describes its handheld program and title-level checks at Xbox Handheld Compatibility.
How to check a Steam Deck game before buying
1. Find the exact edition
Open the game’s Steam store listing and confirm that you are evaluating the same edition, downloadable content and multiplayer mode you intend to use. A base game can be playable while an expansion, launcher requirement or online mode has a different status.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Read the Deck Verified result
Valve’s Deck Verified system communicates whether a title is verified, playable, unsupported or awaiting review. Treat the badge as guidance, not a promise that every future patch will behave identically. Read the notes attached to the result, especially for text legibility, controller prompts, launcher windows and manual keyboard input.
3. Check Proton-dependent features
Proton is the compatibility layer that translates many Windows game calls for SteamOS. A game may launch while a particular feature does not: multiplayer anti-cheat, a separate account launcher, video codecs, mod tools or a nonstandard controller profile can each change the result. If a requirement is not clear on the store page, do not assume that a general Proton statement confirms it.

4. Confirm online and peripheral needs
Before purchase, check whether the game requires an always-online connection, a proprietary anti-cheat service, a VR headset, a racing wheel or a keyboard. Steam Deck controls can handle many controller-oriented games, but a title built around desktop input may need additional configuration.
5. Install a small test first
When a refund or trial option is available under the store’s current terms, use it to test the opening, sign-in process, graphics settings and the specific multiplayer mode you care about. Save files and account entitlements can depend on the publisher, so test before investing dozens of hours.
What installing Epic, GOG or other launchers means on Steam Deck
SteamOS is not a Windows desktop, and the cited Valve pages do not document a universal, one-click Epic Games Store or GOG installation path. Some owners use community-maintained tools or add non-Steam applications, but those methods can change after a launcher or SteamOS update and may not support every game feature. They also can require separate sign-ins, storage locations and controller profiles.
Use this decision process rather than assuming that a launcher will work:
- Identify whether the game is also sold through Steam. If it is, the Steam build gives you the most direct SteamOS workflow and the clearest Deck Verified information.
- If you own it only through another store, check the publisher’s current system requirements and the launcher’s Linux or Proton status. The absence of a native Linux client means additional setup is likely.
- Search for the exact game, not merely the launcher name, in current community compatibility reports. Look for the game version, multiplayer mode and anti-cheat status.
- Decide whether you are willing to repeat the setup after major launcher or SteamOS updates. If not, a Windows handheld is the lower-friction option for that library.
Valve provides SteamOS installation and recovery information at Steam Support’s SteamOS Installation and Repair page. Keep recovery instructions available before experimenting with system-level changes, and back up saves that are not synchronized through cloud storage.
Why Windows is simpler for a multi-store library
Windows handhelds use the desktop versions of PC launchers. ASUS says the ROG Ally X is compatible with Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic, GOG and more, while the ROG Xbox Ally is presented as a Windows handheld for PC titles and games included with Game Pass. You still install each launcher, sign in with the account that owns the game and accept that every launcher has its own updates and overlay behavior.

Using Game Pass
For a Game Pass PC library, Windows avoids the uncertainty of trying to make each subscription title behave like a Steam installation. Open the Xbox app on the handheld, sign in with the Microsoft account holding the subscription, and inspect the game’s requirements before installing. Availability can vary by plan, region, platform and publisher agreement; a game being listed in the broader Xbox catalog does not automatically mean the PC version is included.
Using Epic or GOG
Install the Windows launcher from its official source, sign in, and allow it to finish updates before starting a game. Then check whether the title expects a keyboard, a separate launcher window, a particular controller mode or an always-online connection. Windows gives you the familiar launcher, but a desktop interface can be less convenient on a small touchscreen than SteamOS’s console-oriented shell.
Checking Xbox handheld compatibility
Xbox’s handheld-compatibility program is intended to help identify whether an individual game works on a compatible handheld. Use the title-level result together with the game’s own requirements, rather than treating the program as a guarantee for every store version, patch or peripheral.

Permanent giveaway
A storefront may let you claim a title at no charge for a limited window and keep it in your account afterward. Verify the claim deadline, region and whether the offer is truly permanent. The offer must be claimed during the stated window; installing it later does not recreate an expired promotion.

Free-to-play game
A free-to-play title has no purchase price for its base download but may sell cosmetic items, expansions, battle passes or other content. Check account, age, parental-control and online-service requirements before installing.
Subscription-included game
A Game Pass title can be available without a separate purchase while your qualifying subscription and the publisher’s agreement remain active. If the title leaves the catalog or your subscription ends, access can stop unless you buy it. Confirm the plan and platform shown on the game’s listing.
No specific live giveaway is established here. For a current promotion, open the relevant storefront’s offer page on the day you claim it and record the end date, region and ownership terms. Do not rely on an old article or a social-media post, because free-game windows change quickly.

Score your own library before choosing
Make a list of the games you actually play and mark each item against these criteria. A platform that wins your top five games is usually more useful than one that has a longer theoretical compatibility list.
- Storefront: record whether you own the game on Steam, Xbox, Epic, GOG or another service.
- Operating-system path: note whether the game has a native Windows build, a SteamOS/Proton report or only an unverified community workaround.
- Anti-cheat and online mode: check the multiplayer mode separately from single-player launchability.
- Input: identify games that require a mouse, keyboard, external controller, motion hardware or a launcher overlay.
- Subscription status: distinguish games you own permanently from those available only while a subscription or catalog agreement lasts.
- Setup tolerance: decide whether you will maintain several launchers and troubleshoot updates, or prefer one integrated library.
- Hardware priorities: compare the exact model’s screen, controls, storage, battery claims and power settings using current manufacturer specifications.
- Total price: include the handheld, storage expansion if needed, a case or dock if required, and the cost of any subscription you plan to keep.
Common failure points and what to do
The game launches but multiplayer does not
Recheck the game’s anti-cheat and online requirements for the current version. A successful single-player launch does not prove that network services are supported. On Steam Deck, compare the game’s current Deck Verified notes with the publisher’s support information. On Windows, use the Xbox handheld-compatibility result where applicable and confirm that the Windows launcher and anti-cheat service are fully updated.
The launcher opens with tiny text or no controller input
Switch temporarily to touch or a connected keyboard and mouse, complete sign-in and updates, then test the game’s controller profile. If the launcher remains unusable from the handheld interface, count that maintenance cost in your decision; a title that technically installs may still be impractical to play.

Record the game version, launcher version and operating-system version when the problem appears. Check the publisher’s support notes and current community reports before changing compatibility settings. Avoid deleting prefixes, save folders or configuration files until you know where cloud and local saves are stored.
Storage fills unexpectedly
Large PC games, shader caches, launcher downloads and duplicated installers can consume more space than the game’s initial estimate. Remove abandoned installers and unused games first, then verify the handheld’s supported storage-expansion method and the requirements of any card you consider. The cited product pages do not establish a particular microSD capacity or speed recommendation.
A “free” title stops working
Determine whether it was a permanent claim, a free-to-play download or a subscription entitlement. Check the account that claimed it, the subscription status and the storefront’s current license terms before reinstalling.
Decision guide
Pick Steam Deck when…
- Steam is where you already own most games.
- You value a controller-first interface and Valve’s Deck Verified guidance.
- You are comfortable checking individual Proton compatibility and avoiding unsupported launcher workarounds.
- Your priority is a focused Steam library rather than simultaneous access to several Windows storefronts.
Pick a Windows handheld when…
- PC Game Pass is central to what you play.
- You regularly switch among Steam, Epic, GOG and other Windows launchers.
- You want the conventional Windows version of a launcher and do not want to maintain a separate SteamOS workaround.
- Your most important games have Windows-specific anti-cheat, launcher or peripheral requirements.
Pause before buying either one when…
- Your must-play games have no current compatibility confirmation.
- You expect every free promotion to work on every device without checking its launcher and operating-system requirements.
- You are choosing solely from a headline price without confirming the exact model, storage, region and current stock.
Bottom line
Steam Deck is the cleaner choice for a Steam-first library and a console-like SteamOS experience. A Windows handheld is the safer starting point for Game Pass and a mixed storefront collection, especially when Epic or GOG access is non-negotiable. In both cases, verify the individual game, online mode and ownership type before you buy or claim it; launcher compatibility is a practical feature of the device, not a guarantee that every PC title will run equally well.
