For the broadest out-of-the-box Steam compatibility, choose the ASUS ROG Ally. Its Windows 11 installation runs Windows PC game builds directly, including games and launchers that may not work through Linux compatibility layers. The Steam Deck is the better Steam-first appliance: SteamOS presents a console-like library and Proton runs a very large share of Windows games, but each title can depend on Valve’s compatibility rating, Proton behavior, its launcher, updates and anti-cheat system.
The short answer: Ally for coverage, Deck for a cleaner Steam experience
“Which handheld runs more Steam games?” has two different meanings. If you mean the largest number of Windows PC games that can be installed and launched with the fewest compatibility exceptions, the ROG Ally has the advantage because Windows 11 executes the same Windows builds used on a conventional gaming PC. That matters for games with aggressive anti-cheat, separate launchers, mods, Game Pass dependencies or Windows-only utilities.

If you mean the most coherent way to play a predominantly Steam-based library, Steam Deck is usually easier to live with. SteamOS is Linux-based, and Valve’s Proton compatibility layer handles Windows games inside the Steam interface. Valve said its Proton-supported library had passed 18,000 titles when its page was checked in 2026, but that figure is not a promise that every title will be reliable on every Deck configuration or after every game update.
There is no defensible universal percentage for reliability on either handheld. Results change by game, patch, driver, anti-cheat middleware, launcher and selected power mode. Treat this as a title-by-title decision rather than a winner based on a single library-size number.

How each handheld runs a Steam game
Steam Deck: SteamOS plus Proton
Steam Deck ships with SteamOS 3.0, a Linux-based operating system. When a game has a native Linux build, Steam can use it; otherwise Proton translates the Windows game’s calls so it can run under SteamOS. This integration is why Deck feels more like a console: the library, downloads, controller interface and compatibility information are presented in one environment.
The trade-off is another compatibility layer between the game and the operating system. A title can fail because Proton does not support a particular feature, because an external launcher does not complete its sign-in flow, or because anti-cheat software refuses to run in the way that game requires. A title can also launch after a Proton change and stop working after a game or middleware update.
ROG Ally: Windows 11 and the native Windows build
The ROG Ally runs Windows 11. Steam therefore installs the normal Windows PC version of a game rather than relying on Proton. This removes a major class of Linux-specific exceptions and also makes the handheld a more conventional Windows computer for other launchers and utilities.

The difference is that these are Windows troubleshooting tasks, not a question of whether the game’s Windows build can operate through Proton.

| Label | Valve’s meaning | What it implies for a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” | Best fit for someone who wants to install and play with minimal adjustment. Valve’s checks include supported input, display behavior, seamlessness and system support. |
| Playable | “The game may require some manual tweaking by the user to play.” | Often usable, but expect a setting change, a keyboard prompt, a Proton selection or another hands-on fix. |
| Unsupported | “The game is currently not functional on Steam Deck.” | Do not buy a Deck expecting this title to work reliably unless you accept that its status may change later. |
| Unknown | “We haven’t checked this game for compatibility yet.” | Absence of a rating is not evidence that the game works or fails. Investigate the specific title before purchase. |
Valve says the review covers controller input, display requirements, a seamless experience and system support. System support includes the Proton-side requirements for anti-cheat. A Verified badge therefore addresses more than whether the executable opens once; it is Valve’s signal that the tested experience meets those criteria at the time of review.
Why Windows gives the Ally broader coverage
Anti-cheat and kernel-level components
Competitive multiplayer games can use anti-cheat components that expect Windows behavior or a particular driver model. Valve specifically includes anti-cheat support in its system-support considerations, but Proton support is not universal. If a must-play title uses kernel-level anti-cheat or another Windows-specific protection layer, Windows 11 on the Ally is the lower-risk platform.
Third-party launchers
Some Steam purchases start a second launcher for sign-in, updates or entitlement checks. On Deck, the game, Proton and that launcher all have to cooperate. On Ally, the launcher is running in its native Windows environment, although you may still have to install it, authenticate and deal with its own updates. This distinction is especially important for libraries spread across Steam, Epic, EA or Ubisoft services.
Mods and Windows utilities
Mod managers, overlays and Windows-only helper tools are generally designed around Windows paths and services. They can work on Deck in some cases, but the setup is less predictable because Proton must expose the expected environment. If your definition of “reliable” includes a particular mod stack, utility or launcher, Ally’s native Windows environment is the safer baseline.
Game Pass and non-Steam software
Game Pass dependencies and other Windows software favor the Ally. Steam Deck is optimized around SteamOS and Steam distribution; adding a Windows-oriented service can require workarounds and may not provide the same integrated experience. Choose the Ally if access to Windows utilities or Game Pass is part of the purchase decision rather than an occasional experiment.

Hardware differences that affect perceived reliability
| Specification | Steam Deck | ROG Ally | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating system | SteamOS 3.0 | Windows 11 | Deck uses Proton for many Windows games; Ally runs Windows builds directly. |
| Display resolution | 1280×800 | 1920×1080 | The Deck’s lower target can make supported games easier to run consistently; the Ally offers a sharper, higher-resolution target. |
| Refresh rate reported by comparison coverage | Up to 60/90Hz | 120Hz | Higher refresh capability can improve motion when a game and power mode can sustain it, but it does not fix compatibility. |
| Processor options listed in comparison coverage | Not stated | AMD Ryzen Z1 or Z1 Extreme | The Ally range has different performance tiers; identify the exact model before comparing headroom. |
| Expandable storage | microSD support | microSD support | A card can hold more games, but storage capacity does not alter a title’s compatibility status. |
Windows Central lists the Ally with Ryzen Z1 or Z1 Extreme options, Windows 11, a 1080p/120Hz display and microSD support. Its comparison lists Deck with SteamOS 3.0, a 1280×800 display and microSD support. TechRadar likewise lists Deck at 1280×800 with up to 60/90Hz and Ally at 1920×1080 and 120Hz. Those specifications explain why the Ally can offer more raw performance headroom, while Deck’s lower-resolution SteamOS target can make games that are already supported feel consistent.

A game can be technically compatible yet inconvenient. On Deck, a Verified game is intended to work without manual intervention, but future patches can change behavior and Valve’s review status can evolve. A Playable game may be perfectly acceptable to an experienced user who is comfortable selecting a Proton version or changing a setting, while being frustrating for someone who expects a console-style launch every time.
On Ally, native Windows support removes Proton as a variable, but Windows introduces its own maintenance. Drivers, Windows updates, launchers, overlays and controller services can affect startup or input. The Ally’s 1080p panel also gives games a more demanding target than Deck’s 1280×800 display; a game that launches successfully may still need a sensible resolution, frame-rate or power-mode choice to feel smooth.
Check your own library before buying
Your must-play list is more informative than a general compatibility claim. Perform this check before choosing a device:
- List the games you will actually play. Separate essential multiplayer titles, single-player favorites, modded games and games you might buy later.
- Open each game’s Steam store page. Record the Steam Deck compatibility label shown by Valve: Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown.
- Flag risk factors. Mark games that use kernel-level or other demanding anti-cheat, external launchers, VR, mods, Game Pass dependencies or Windows utilities.
- Decide how much tinkering is acceptable. Verified-heavy libraries suit Deck’s appliance-like workflow. A list dominated by Unknown, Unsupported or launcher-dependent titles favors Ally.
- Recheck close to purchase. Valve says ratings and reviews change as games and updates arrive, so a label seen months earlier may not describe the current build.
Do not treat an Unknown label as a hidden recommendation. It means Valve has not checked that game for compatibility yet. Likewise, an Unsupported label describes the current state; it is not a guarantee that the title will never work, but it is a poor basis for a purchase made around that game.

What to do when a Deck game is Playable or Unknown
Start with the label and the game’s current build
Read the compatibility notice on the Steam page, then consider whether the game has recently changed. New patches, launcher revisions and anti-cheat updates can move a title between practical “works for me” and “needs intervention” states.
Try Proton choices deliberately
Steam Deck lets users choose Proton versions for a game. Use that control when a title is marked Playable or when an update has changed behavior, and keep a note of the version that works. This is a troubleshooting option, not a universal fix: Proton cannot make every anti-cheat or launcher exception disappear.
Separate compatibility from convenience
If a game launches only after repeated manual steps, it may be technically playable but not reliable for your use. Decide whether you are willing to repeat those steps after updates. For a travel device or a shared household handheld, the distinction between “can be made to run” and “starts predictably” is significant.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when an Ally game misbehaves
Check Windows-side prerequisites
Confirm that Steam, the game’s publisher launcher and required updates have completed. A title that will not start may be waiting for a launcher sign-in, a runtime update or a driver restart rather than failing because of Steam compatibility.
Check controller and display behavior
Windows games can expose desktop-style prompts or fail to select the handheld’s controller profile automatically. Verify the active input mode and resolution before assuming the game is incompatible. The Ally’s 1080p/120Hz capability gives you options, but choosing a higher refresh or resolution than the game and power mode can sustain may reduce smoothness.

Use Windows flexibility as the recovery path
The same Windows environment that broadens game coverage also gives you access to standard Windows troubleshooting. That flexibility is useful for launchers, utilities and mods, but it can feel less streamlined than SteamOS. Buyers should value the coverage only if they are comfortable maintaining a small Windows PC.
Deck or Ally for common player profiles
| If your priority is… | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Mostly Verified or Playable Steam games | Steam Deck | SteamOS keeps downloads, controller use and compatibility information in one Steam-first interface. |
| Maximum coverage across Steam and other PC launchers | ROG Ally | Windows 11 runs native Windows builds and supports multiple launchers in their normal environment. |
| Anti-cheat-heavy competitive multiplayer | ROG Ally | Windows avoids Proton-specific anti-cheat exceptions; verify the individual game’s requirements. |
| Game Pass or Windows utilities | ROG Ally | The operating system matches those services and tools directly. |
| Console-like Steam navigation | Steam Deck | SteamOS is designed around the Steam library rather than a general Windows desktop. |
| Mods that depend on Windows tools | ROG Ally | Native Windows support is the lower-risk starting point for Windows-only mod managers and utilities. |
| Willingness to tune Proton settings | Steam Deck | Manual Proton selection can make some Playable or Unknown titles usable, but results remain title-specific. |
Storage and accessories: useful, but not compatibility fixes
Both handhelds support microSD storage. A high-capacity UHS-I microSD card is practical for a large library, especially when several modern games are installed at once. It only adds space: it cannot change a Deck label, enable unsupported anti-cheat or repair a launcher.
A compatible USB-C dock is useful for an external display, keyboard, mouse or wired accessories. Docking likewise expands connectivity rather than compatibility. Confirm that the dock’s power delivery is suitable for the handheld and that the display connection matches your setup.
When shopping, identify the exact model and region. The named options include Steam Deck OLED in 512GB or 1TB capacities and ASUS ROG Ally models using Ryzen Z1 or Z1 Extreme. Storage capacity and processor tier affect how you use the device, but neither turns an Unsupported Steam Deck game into a guaranteed playable title.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes that lead to the wrong choice
- Using the number of games in your account as the only metric. A library may include many indies that work well on Deck and a few must-play multiplayer games that determine the purchase.
- Assuming Verified is permanent. Valve’s review process is ongoing, and game updates can change practical behavior.
- Assuming Windows means zero troubleshooting. The Ally avoids Proton exceptions but still has Windows updates, drivers, launchers and controller issues.
- Calling Unknown “unsupported.” Unknown means Valve has not checked the title; it is an uncertainty signal, not a failure verdict.
- Buying accessories as a compatibility solution. More storage or a dock changes capacity and connectivity, not operating-system support.
- Comparing only display resolution. The Ally’s 1080p/120Hz panel and Z1-series options offer headroom, while Deck’s 1280×800 target can make supported games easier to tune. Neither specification alone decides whether a game launches.
Final decision checklist
- Choose ROG Ally when “as many Steam games as possible” is the priority, particularly with anti-cheat-heavy multiplayer, Game Pass, Epic, EA or Ubisoft launchers, mods and Windows utilities.
- Choose Steam Deck when most of your library is Verified or Playable and you want a focused Steam interface while accepting occasional Proton settings or unsupported titles.
- Before ordering either device, check every must-play game’s current Steam Deck label and note its launcher, anti-cheat, VR, mod and Windows-service dependencies.
- Revisit that list after major game updates; compatibility is a moving property rather than a permanent hardware specification.
