Neither device is automatically the budget winner. Choose a Steam Deck when you want a complete, portable gaming system with its own screen, controls and battery. Choose an AMD mini PC when you play mainly at a desk or on a TV, already own a monitor and peripherals, and want a small desktop that can be configured around your games. Compare the complete cost and game-specific performance, not just the price of the computer.
The short answer
A Steam Deck is an all-in-one handheld PC. You can pick it up and play without buying a display, keyboard or mouse. Its built-in controls and battery make it practical on a sofa, in bed or while travelling. An AMD mini PC is a small desktop computer: the box may be inexpensive, but normal play requires an external display and input devices. It is best suited to a fixed desk or TV setup.

For a reader starting from zero, the Deck usually has the clearer total-cost advantage because the screen and controls are included. For someone who already owns a good monitor, keyboard, mouse and gamepad, a mini PC can deliver more desktop flexibility for a similar or lower computer-only price. Performance cannot be settled by the AMD or Radeon name alone; the exact processor, memory configuration, power limit, cooling, drivers, game and settings all matter.

What you actually get with each option
Steam Deck: a complete portable system
Valve sells LCD and OLED versions. Every model combines the computer, display, controls, speakers, wireless hardware and battery in one handheld chassis. The device can also be connected to a larger screen with a compatible dock or adapter, but that is optional for handheld play.
#1 Best Overall
The 256GB LCD model has a 7-inch, 1280 × 800 display, up to a 60Hz refresh rate, a 40Wh battery and a 45W power supply. Valve’s page displayed a US price of $789 when checked in October 2026. The 512GB OLED model has a 7.4-inch 1280 × 800 HDR OLED display, up to 90Hz, a 50Wh battery and a 45W supply; the displayed price was $949. The 1TB OLED uses the same basic display and battery specification and adds premium anti-glare etched glass; its displayed price was also $949. Valve notes that specifications can change, and regional prices may differ.
AMD mini PC: a compact desktop platform
A mini PC is only the computer. You normally supply a monitor or television, keyboard, mouse and, for many games, a controller. You may also need an HDMI or DisplayPort cable, speakers or a headset, and a compatible power outlet. Those items can already be sunk costs if you have a desk or TV setup, but they materially change the value calculation for a first-time buyer.
A useful example is the Brenuc Bren7P configuration described by TechRadar: a Ryzen 7 7840HS processor, Radeon 780M integrated graphics, 16GB of DDR5 memory and a 512GB PCIe 4.0 SSD. TechRadar reported a $499 Newegg deal price in 2026. That was a retailer-specific deal, not a guaranteed current price or a category-wide mini-PC price. Confirm the exact model, memory, storage, power adapter and seller before buying. The report says this configuration can be expanded to 64GB of RAM and can accept a second M.2 NVMe drive; verify those features and the warranty for the particular listing.

Current prices and the complete cost of ownership
Prices in this comparison move quickly. Use the following figures as dated reference points rather than promises of what you will pay today.
| Product or configuration | What is included | Price reported | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck 256GB LCD | Handheld, 7-inch 1280 × 800 LCD, controls, 40Wh battery, 45W supply | $789 displayed by Valve | US product-page price observed in 2026; regional and future prices may differ |
| Steam Deck 512GB OLED | Handheld, 7.4-inch 1280 × 800 HDR OLED, up to 90Hz, controls, 50Wh battery, 45W supply | $949 displayed by Valve | US product-page price observed in 2026; prices are volatile |
| Steam Deck 1TB OLED | OLED handheld with the same basic screen and battery specification, anti-glare etched glass | $949 displayed by Valve | US product-page price observed in 2026; confirm availability and regional pricing |
| Brenuc Bren7P example | Ryzen 7 7840HS, Radeon 780M, 16GB DDR5, 512GB PCIe 4.0 SSD | $499 Newegg deal reported by TechRadar | Historical/volatile deal; the price excludes any monitor, keyboard, mouse or controller |
The mini-PC figure is not a matched setup total. If you need a display and input devices, add the prices of the specific items you would buy. Do not assume that a monitor, keyboard, mouse or gamepad is included because a listing shows a low computer price. Conversely, if you already own those peripherals, their replacement cost is zero for this decision.
Value can change dramatically during sales. PC Gamer reported a US price of $319.20 for the 256GB LCD on September 24, 2025. That historical deal is useful evidence of volatility, but it is not a current price. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 handheld guide also listed $789 for the 512GB OLED and $949 for the 1TB OLED and discussed how a price increase changed the Deck’s value position. Hardware, screen and battery differences
| Factor | Steam Deck | AMD mini PC |
|---|---|---|
| Display | Built in; LCD models use 7-inch 1280 × 800 panels, OLED models use 7.4-inch 1280 × 800 HDR panels | Not included; connect a monitor or TV at the resolution and refresh rate you choose |
| Controls | Integrated handheld controls | External keyboard and mouse are required for ordinary desktop use; a controller is optional but common for games |
| Power | Battery-powered; Valve quotes 2–8 hours for the 256GB LCD and 3–12 hours for OLED, depending on content | Designed for continuous AC power; no battery-play specification is supplied |
| Portability | Self-contained handheld | Small to transport, but play normally requires the destination display and input devices |
| Storage and memory | Choose among Valve’s listed capacities; expansion options depend on the model and accessories you use | The Brenuc example includes 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD; TechRadar reports upgrade paths to 64GB RAM and a second M.2 drive for that configuration |
Battery estimates are content-dependent ranges, not guaranteed runtimes for every game. A demanding 3D title at high brightness and refresh rate can consume power faster than a lightweight indie game. A mini PC avoids battery limits but needs a permanent outlet and a cable-connected display.
What the published gaming tests do—and do not—prove
GamersNexus tested Steam Deck LCD and OLED models in particular games and settings. In Red Dead Redemption 2 at 720p on its upper-end performance preset, the LCD averaged 49.7 frames per second and the OLED averaged 53 FPS. In Dying Light 2 at 720p Low with FSR Quality, the OLED averaged 45.8 FPS. In Cyberpunk 2077 at 720p Low with FSR Quality, the OLED averaged 44.6 FPS. These are review results published in 2023, tied to the listed games, resolutions and settings.
| Game and test condition | Deck LCD | Deck OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption 2, 720p, upper-end performance preset | 49.7 FPS average | 53 FPS average |
| Dying Light 2, 720p Low, FSR Quality | Not stated in the cited test | 45.8 FPS average |
| Cyberpunk 2077, 720p Low, FSR Quality | Not stated in the cited test | 44.6 FPS average |
Those tests do not include the Brenuc Bren7P, and they do not represent every AMD mini PC. It would be incorrect to turn them into a fixed claim that a Radeon 780M is a specific percentage faster than a Deck. Integrated-graphics performance changes with the mini PC’s sustained power limit, cooling design, single- versus dual-channel memory, memory speed, drivers and game settings. A direct FPS verdict requires tests of the exact Deck model and exact mini-PC configuration at matched resolution, quality preset, upscaling mode and frame-time measurement.

Match the device to your games and display
If you target handheld-style play
The Deck’s 1280 × 800 screen lets you choose a practical target without purchasing a monitor. Many demanding games are configured around lower resolutions and upscaling, while less demanding games can make better use of the OLED model’s 90Hz capability. The published tests above show results around the mid-40s to low-50s FPS in selected demanding titles; they are not a promise for a new release or a different settings profile.
If you target a 1080p monitor or television
A mini PC lets you select a larger screen and sit at a desk or couch. That flexibility is useful if your existing monitor is already 1080p and you are comfortable adjusting quality settings. However, moving from the Deck’s 1280 × 800 target to a higher desktop resolution increases the workload. Compare benchmarks at the output resolution you actually intend to use instead of relying on a component name.
If your library includes compatibility-sensitive games
The Deck provides a console-like interface, but PC games can differ in launcher requirements, anti-cheat support, controller behavior and Linux compatibility. The available evidence does not establish compatibility for every game. Check the specific titles you care about and their current support status before treating a Deck as a safe choice. A Windows-capable mini PC may fit a particular launcher or anti-cheat requirement more easily, but that is not a guarantee for every title or configuration.

- Helpful in various ways
Setup paths
Starting with a Steam Deck
- Choose LCD or OLED storage capacity based on the games you keep installed and the price available in your region.
- Complete the first-run setup, connect to Wi-Fi and install system and game updates before judging performance.
- Install one representative demanding game and one lighter game from your library.
- Set the game’s resolution, quality preset and upscaling mode deliberately. Record the frame rate and battery behavior at the settings you can tolerate.
- For desk or TV play, connect a compatible dock or adapter, pair or plug in your controller, and select the external display’s resolution. A dock is optional; it is not required for handheld use.
Starting with an AMD mini PC
- Confirm the exact processor, integrated GPU, RAM layout, SSD capacity, power adapter and operating-system license in the listing.
- Budget for a display, keyboard, mouse and controller if you do not already own them. Verify which video outputs and cables your display requires.
- Connect the mini PC to AC power and the display, then complete operating-system updates and install the latest graphics drivers offered for that exact system.
- Check whether the memory is running in the intended channel configuration. Integrated graphics share system memory, so the installed modules and firmware settings can affect results.
- Install the games you actually play and test at the monitor’s native resolution. Adjust quality, upscaling, frame-rate caps and power-performance modes one at a time.
- Monitor temperatures, clock behavior and stability during a sustained session. A short menu benchmark can hide throttling in a small enclosure.
Upgrade and maintenance considerations
The Brenuc example is described as supporting up to 64GB of memory and a second M.2 NVMe drive. That can make a mini PC easier to expand than a sealed handheld, but the statement applies to that reported configuration, not to every AMD mini PC. Confirm the service manual, slot type, maximum supported capacity and warranty terms before opening the case.
More memory or storage does not automatically create a proportional gaming improvement. Additional storage helps when a 512GB drive fills up; extra memory can help multitasking or memory-heavy software. Graphics performance remains constrained by the integrated GPU, thermal design and power budget. Treat upgradeability as a flexibility benefit, not as proof of a particular FPS gain.
Common buying mistakes
- Comparing a bare mini-PC price with a complete handheld. Add only the peripherals you genuinely need, but do not omit them from a first-time setup budget.
- Assuming every Radeon 780M system performs identically. Check the processor model, RAM configuration, sustained power limit, cooling and driver support.
- Using a historical sale as today’s price. The $319.20 LCD deal reported in 2025 and the $499 mini-PC deal reported in 2026 may no longer exist.
- Quoting benchmark numbers without settings. Keep resolution, quality preset and upscaling mode beside every FPS figure.
- Choosing based on peak FPS while ignoring where you play. A desk-bound system is inconvenient if you want battery-powered play; a handheld is a poor fit if you require a permanent monitor and desktop peripherals.
- Ignoring game-specific compatibility. Verify the launchers, anti-cheat systems and controller behavior for your own library.
- Buying a mini PC without checking outputs and accessories. Make sure it has the video connector, wireless support and power supply needed for your setup.
A practical decision framework
| Your situation | More suitable starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want to play away from a desk and own no gaming peripherals | Steam Deck | Screen, controls and battery are included |
| You already have a monitor, keyboard, mouse and controller | AMD mini PC | The computer-only price may be the relevant cost, and the fixed setup suits desktop play |
| You need a larger screen and desktop multitasking | AMD mini PC | You choose the display and use standard desktop peripherals |
| You value a simple console-like handheld routine | Steam Deck | The portable hardware and controls are integrated |
| Your priority is a specific competitive or anti-cheat-sensitive game | Verify compatibility first | The available evidence does not establish universal Deck compatibility, and no single mini-PC configuration guarantees support |
| You are deciding on FPS alone | Obtain matched tests | The cited Deck results do not test the named mini PC, so a universal percentage advantage is unsupported |
Before paying, write down four answers: where you will play, which display resolution you expect, which three games matter most, and which peripherals you already own. Then compare the current device prices plus only the missing equipment. If the answers point to both devices, buy based on the form factor you will use every week; a theoretical performance advantage is worth little if the system stays unplugged or disconnected.
