What each Steam Deck customization route actually does
The names are easy to mix up because the documented setup often uses all three. Their roles are different:

Think of Decky as the extension layer, CSS Loader as one extension that changes appearance, and Desktop Mode as the separate workspace that makes installation and broader computer tasks practical.
How CSS Loader changes the Deck interface
DeckThemes describes CSS Loader as a styling engine for Steam that can customize both desktop Steam and Big Picture mode. On Steam Deck, the documented installation route is through Decky’s built-in store.

What visual customization can include
- Color schemes, backgrounds and typography changes.
- Restyled menus, cards and navigation elements.
- Theme combinations that alter the overall look without changing the games installed on the device.
A theme is presentation code, not a firmware modification. It can change how Steam looks while leaving your games and save files untouched. However, a theme can become incompatible when Steam’s client interface changes, so treat visual themes as community-maintained add-ons rather than permanent system features.
Install CSS Loader from Gaming Mode
- In Gaming Mode, open the Quick Access menu using the button with the three dots.
- Select the plug icon to open Decky.
- Open Decky’s store.
- Search for
CSS Loader. - Select the result and choose Install.
After installation, CSS Loader appears among Decky’s plugins. Theme selection and configuration then happen through its own interface. If the plug icon or store is missing, Decky itself is not running and must be installed or repaired first.
What Decky Loader is—and what it is not
Decky Loader is a community homebrew launcher and manager for plugins. The project lists plugins for tasks such as menu styling, system sounds, screen saturation and additional system settings. Each plugin has its own developer and maintenance cycle, so the quality, compatibility and update speed can differ from one plugin to another.
Why Decky is useful for UI customization
- It provides the in-interface store used to find and install CSS Loader.
- It keeps multiple community extensions in one place instead of requiring a separate installer for every feature.
- It adds functions beyond appearance, including sound and display-related controls where a maintained plugin exists.
Important support boundary
Decky identifies itself as a homebrew plugin launcher, not a Valve-supported plugin system. Valve does not guarantee that Decky or individual plugins will continue to work after every SteamOS or Steam client update. Plugin authors maintain their own projects, and an abandoned plugin may remain visible until its compatibility problem is addressed.
Only use plugins from sources you trust. The Decky project specifically advises against installing plugins from untrusted sources. A plugin can request broad access to the Deck’s software environment, so “available in a search result” should not be treated as the same thing as “reviewed or supported by Valve.”

Desktop Mode: the setup workspace and a separate desktop
Desktop Mode is the Deck’s Linux desktop environment. Valve’s product material describes access to a Linux desktop and the ability to install applications. Valve’s support documentation also covers using the Deck’s controls while in that mode.
For customization, Desktop Mode matters for two reasons:
- Installation: Decky’s documented installer workflow begins after switching to Desktop Mode.
- General computing: You can run desktop applications, manage files and use browser-based tools without leaving the Steam Deck hardware.
Desktop Mode does not install themes by itself. CSS Loader and other plugins are managed through Decky, while Desktop Mode supplies the conventional desktop session used to download and run the Decky installer.
Install Decky Loader safely, step by step
The following follows the Decky maintainers’ documented workflow. It is project guidance, not an independent compatibility test.
Prepare the Deck
- Save open work and connect the Deck to power if you expect a lengthy setup or download.
- A keyboard and mouse are convenient but optional. Decky documents USB-C and Bluetooth connections; the built-in trackpad and on-screen keyboard are alternatives.
Run the installer
- Open the Deck’s Power menu.
- Choose Switch to Desktop and wait for the Linux desktop to load.
- Download the Decky installer file from the Decky project’s repository.
- Run the downloaded installer file. If the desktop asks which application should open it, use the option intended to execute the installer rather than opening it as plain text.
- When the installer offers release choices, select the stable version for normal use.
- After installation completes, launch the Return to Gaming Mode shortcut.
- Back in Gaming Mode, open Quick Access and select the plug icon to confirm that Decky is present.
Stable versus prerelease

A prerelease may contain fixes sooner, but “newer” does not mean “more reliable.” Changing channels is a troubleshooting decision, not a required step for ordinary theme installation.

Install a theme after Decky is working
- Remain in Gaming Mode and open the Quick Access menu.
- Select the plug icon to open Decky.
- Open the store and install CSS Loader if you have not already done so.
- Open CSS Loader from the plugin list.
- Browse or search for a theme, then apply it using the controls supplied by CSS Loader.
- Return to the Steam interface and check several screens, including the library, game details and Quick Access menu.
Checking more than the home screen matters because a theme can look correct in one view while producing unreadable text, misplaced controls or broken spacing elsewhere. If a theme causes problems, disable it from CSS Loader before removing other plugins; isolating one change at a time makes recovery easier.
Choose between themes, plugins and Desktop Mode

These choices are not mutually exclusive. The common arrangement is Desktop Mode for installation and desktop tasks, Decky for plugin management, and CSS Loader for the visual layer.
Maintenance after SteamOS or client updates
Community extensions depend on interfaces that can change underneath them. The Decky project warns: Sometimes Decky will disappear on SteamOS updates.
If the plug icon vanishes after an update, that does not necessarily mean your Deck is damaged.
Recovery sequence when Decky disappears
- Switch to Desktop Mode from the Power menu.
- Rerun the Decky installer from the project repository.
- Choose the stable branch first.
- Return to Gaming Mode with the Return to Gaming Mode shortcut.
- Check the Quick Access menu for the plug icon and test CSS Loader.
- If the documented issue persists, consider the prerelease channel only as a troubleshooting step, then retest one plugin at a time.
Do not assume that every plugin failure has the same cause. A missing Decky icon points to the launcher; a single broken theme points more narrowly to CSS Loader or that theme; a desktop application problem may be unrelated to either.
Keep changes manageable
- Install one plugin or theme at a time and test before adding another.
- Record which theme and plugins are active before a major SteamOS update.
- Prefer maintained projects and read their compatibility notes.
- Avoid packages offered through untrusted sources.
- When troubleshooting, disable the newest change first rather than removing everything at once.
Uninstall Decky Loader
The Decky project documents uninstalling by rerunning its installer. Return to Desktop Mode, launch the same installer workflow, and choose the uninstall option when presented. Then return to Gaming Mode and verify that the plug icon and Decky entries are gone.

Removing Decky removes the launcher and its plugin environment; it does not turn Desktop Mode off or uninstall unrelated desktop applications. A theme that changed Steam’s appearance should also be disabled or removed through CSS Loader before you conclude that the entire Decky installation needs to be removed.

You can complete the documented setup without a separate keyboard and mouse. The Deck’s trackpad can move the pointer, and the on-screen keyboard can enter search terms and file names. A keyboard and mouse can make Desktop Mode faster, especially when entering repository URLs, renaming files or navigating multiple windows.

These are convenience choices, not additional software requirements.
Common problems and the right fix
The plug icon is missing
Decky is probably not installed, did not start, or was affected by a SteamOS update. Use Desktop Mode and rerun the installer, beginning with the stable release.
CSS Loader is not in the store
Confirm that Decky itself opens from the plug icon and that you are searching the Decky store, not the regular Steam game store. If Decky is unavailable, repair Decky before troubleshooting CSS Loader.

A theme makes text or controls unreadable
Open CSS Loader and disable the theme. If the interface remains inconsistent, remove other recently installed styling components and restart Gaming Mode. Reapply changes individually so you can identify the conflicting theme.
A plugin stopped working after an update
Check whether the plugin’s developer has published a compatibility update. SteamOS and Steam client changes can affect community plugins, and Decky does not guarantee that every extension will survive those changes. Avoid switching to a prerelease branch unless it addresses a specific documented problem.
Desktop Mode feels difficult to control
Pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse or connect USB-C peripherals if available. For a short task, the trackpad and on-screen keyboard remain valid alternatives.

UI customization trades some of Steam Deck’s appliance-like simplicity for flexibility. Decky and its plugins are community software, so you assume responsibility for checking sources, reading maintenance notes and repairing the installation after updates. A conservative setup—stable Decky, CSS Loader and one well-maintained theme—has fewer moving parts than a large collection of plugins.
Keep the distinction between cosmetic and functional changes clear. A CSS theme primarily affects presentation; a plugin that changes system settings can have broader effects. If you need to diagnose a problem, return to a plain interface first, then add the visual and functional changes back separately.
Can Desktop Mode replace Gaming Mode?
No. Desktop Mode is useful for installing applications, downloading the Decky installer and performing file-oriented work. Gaming Mode remains the console-style Steam interface where Decky’s Quick Access integration and CSS Loader are normally used. You can move between them from the Power menu, so the practical choice is to use each environment for the task it handles best rather than trying to make one replace the other.
Recommended setup for most owners
- Use Desktop Mode to install Decky from the project’s documented installer.
- Select the stable Decky release.
- Return to Gaming Mode and verify the plug icon.
- Install CSS Loader from Decky’s built-in store.
- Apply one theme and test the library, game details and Quick Access screens.
- Add other plugins only when you have a specific need, checking their maintenance status first.
- After SteamOS updates, repair Decky if it disappears before changing several other components.
This sequence gives you a reversible visual change, keeps functional additions deliberate and leaves Desktop Mode available for maintenance without confusing it with the theming layer.
