PlayStation Portal is the better choice for straightforward PS5 Remote Play. It is Sony’s purpose-built handheld, with official PS5 support, integrated DualSense-style controls and a simple setup. Steam Deck is the better fit if you also want a general-purpose Steam handheld and are willing to accept that PS5 streaming is not an officially supported Sony use case.
The two devices solve different problems. Portal is designed to put a PS5 library on a second screen around the home or away from the television. Steam Deck is a handheld PC whose primary job is running compatible Steam games locally. You can investigate an unofficial PS5-streaming arrangement on a Deck, but Sony’s supported-device documentation does not list it, and Valve’s Remote Play documentation describes streaming from a host computer rather than providing PlayStation compatibility.

What each device officially does
PlayStation Portal: a dedicated PS5 client
Sony describes PlayStation Portal as a device that streams compatible games installed on a PS5 console over Wi-Fi. Remote Play requires a PS5, a PlayStation account and a network connection. The console must be paired with Portal, connected to the internet, and either switched on or left in Rest Mode. Sony’s product information also documents haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in games that support those DualSense features. See Sony’s product details at PlayStation Portal Remote Player.

Portal Remote Play connects to PS5, not PS4. Sony’s compatibility page explicitly identifies PS5 as the supported console and excludes PS4; the same page also lists the account and network conditions needed for a connection at PS Portal compatibility.

Steam Deck: a handheld PC first
Valve positions Steam Deck as a handheld for Steam games. Its official specification sheet lists a 7-inch, 1280 × 800, 60 Hz touchscreen, dual-band 2.4 GHz/5 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a head-to-head test against Portal. The specifications are in Valve’s Steam Deck Tech Specs & Facts.
Valve’s Steam Remote Play documentation concerns sending a game session from a host computer to another connected device. It does not establish official PlayStation Remote Play support on Steam Deck. Sony’s PS Remote Play device list names Portal, mobile devices, Windows PC, Mac and certain Android TV devices; Steam Deck is not included.
Decision table: which device matches your use case?
| Decision axis | PlayStation Portal | Steam Deck |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Purpose-built PS5 remote player; eligible PS5 cloud streaming is also available to Premium members | Handheld PC for Steam games; PS5 streaming requires an unofficial approach not established by Sony or Valve’s official documents |
| Official PS5 Remote Play support | Yes, in Sony’s product and support documentation | Not listed among Sony’s compatible Remote Play devices |
| Console requirement for ordinary Remote Play | A paired PS5 that is online and powered on or in Rest Mode | No official PS5 requirement or supported workflow is established |
| Network guidance | Sony requires at least 5 Mbps broadband Wi-Fi and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience | Valve lists dual-band Wi-Fi hardware; no PS5-streaming threshold is established here |
| Screen in cited specifications | 8-inch LCD, 1080p, capable of up to 60 fps | 7-inch touchscreen, 1280 × 800, 60 Hz |
| Audio options | 3.5 mm wired audio and PlayStation Link wireless devices | Bluetooth 5.0 is listed; the result depends on the operating system, client and accessories used |
| Best fit | Someone whose main goal is direct access to a PS5 library away from the TV | Someone who wants a broad Steam handheld and accepts setup and support trade-offs for PS5 streaming |
The table compares documented roles and specifications. No independent, controlled comparison establishing a winner for latency, image quality, reliability or user preference is available, so those outcomes depend on the network, game, router, distance and software path used.

How PS5 Remote Play works on Portal
- Prepare the account and console. Sign in to the same PlayStation account on Portal and the PS5. Keep the PS5 connected to the internet and enable Rest Mode networking if you want to wake it remotely.
- Pair Portal with the PS5. Follow the on-screen pairing process while both devices are connected to Wi-Fi. Portal is intended to discover and connect to a PS5 associated with your account.
- Start a session. Select the PS5 from Portal’s interface. The console sends the game video and audio to Portal, while your button, stick and touch inputs travel back over the network.
- Keep the network within Sony’s guidance. Sony states that 5 Mbps broadband Wi-Fi is the minimum and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are service requirements and guidance, not a guarantee of a fixed frame rate or latency; Sony notes that network quality affects play. The requirements appear on the PS Remote Play page.
Remote Play itself does not require PlayStation Plus. A particular game’s online multiplayer features may still require the membership tier that the game publisher or PlayStation requires. Portal also does not include a PS5; it is a streaming client for a console you already own.
What using Steam Deck for PS5 games actually means
There is no Sony-supported Deck workflow in the cited documentation
Sony’s supported-device list does not include Steam Deck, and Valve’s Remote Play page does not claim compatibility with PlayStation consoles. Therefore, a Deck purchase alone does not provide an officially supported Sony Remote Play feature. Any method that attempts to run a third-party Linux client or otherwise connect to a PS5 should be treated as unofficial. The available documentation here does not establish a particular application, installation sequence, compatibility level or long-term reliability for such a method.
Steam Remote Play is a different feature
Steam Remote Play streams a game from a host computer running Steam to a connected device. That is useful when the host is a gaming PC in your home, but it is not evidence that Steam Deck can act as an official PS5 Remote Play client. A reader deciding between the devices should keep the source console in mind: Portal receives a PS5 session through Sony’s service, while Steam Remote Play concerns a Steam host.
What the Deck still offers locally
For Steam games that run on the device, Deck can provide handheld play without a PS5. Its 1280 × 800 touchscreen, 60 Hz refresh rate, dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 are the specifications Valve publishes. Game compatibility, performance and control support vary by title and software configuration; those variables should not be inferred from the display or wireless specifications alone.

Portal’s separate cloud-streaming mode
On November 5, 2025, Sony launched cloud streaming on Portal for PlayStation Plus Premium members. This is separate from ordinary Remote Play: the game is streamed from Sony’s cloud infrastructure rather than from the owner’s PS5. Sony says eligible Premium members can stream select digital PS5 games from their own library, along with compatible titles in the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. Not every PS5 game is eligible.
Cloud streaming can be useful when the PS5 is powered off or another account is using the console. Sony product manager Takuro Fushimi described the feature this way: “Cloud Streaming unlocks new ways to play: enjoy a game side-by-side with a friend who’s using your PS5 under a separate account, or stream your favorite game while someone else watches a movie on the console.” The announcement and eligibility details are in the PlayStation Blog announcement.
Cloud streaming does not remove network dependence or turn Portal into a local console. Membership status, game eligibility, account region, Sony’s service availability and the quality of the current connection all matter. If a game is not included in the eligible set, ordinary Remote Play from your own PS5 remains the relevant Portal path.
Screen, controls and audio differences
Display size and resolution
Portal’s cited specification is an 8-inch LCD at 1080p with capability up to 60 frames per second. Steam Deck’s cited specification is a 7-inch, 1280 × 800 touchscreen at 60 Hz. Portal therefore presents the higher stated pixel count and larger panel in these specifications, while Deck adds touchscreen input. Neither specification by itself proves lower latency, sharper motion or better image quality during streaming.

Portal uses controls built around DualSense features. Sony says haptic feedback and adaptive triggers work in supported games, so the effect depends on the game itself. Deck’s controls are designed for PC games and their individual control mappings. A PS5 title streamed through an unofficial path may not expose every PlayStation-specific feature, and the cited sources do not establish which haptics, triggers or touch controls would work in a particular setup.
Headphones and wireless audio
Portal supports wired headphones through a 3.5 mm jack and wireless audio through PlayStation Link devices, including Sony’s PULSE Explore and PULSE Elite. Steam Deck’s specification sheet lists Bluetooth 5.0; actual headset behavior depends on the operating system, client software and accessory. If low-complexity PS5 audio is important, Portal’s documented audio options are easier to evaluate than an unofficial Deck arrangement.

Use Sony’s numbers as a floor, not a promise
For Portal Remote Play, Sony states that broadband Wi-Fi of at least 5 Mbps is required and at least 15 Mbps is recommended for a better experience. Throughput is only one part of streaming quality. Wi-Fi interference, router placement, congestion, distance from the access point and the PS5’s connection to the router can all affect responsiveness. Sony explicitly warns that the actual experience varies with network conditions.

If Portal cannot find the PS5
- Confirm that Portal and the PS5 use the same PlayStation account.
- Verify that the PS5 is online and either powered on or configured for network access in Rest Mode.
- Check that the console is a PS5; Sony’s Remote Play compatibility information does not include PS4.
- Move Portal closer to the Wi-Fi access point and test again before changing other settings.
- Restart the network equipment and the PS5 if the console remains undiscoverable.
If a session connects but feels unstable
- Use the 15 Mbps recommendation as a practical target rather than relying on the 5 Mbps minimum.
- Reduce competing traffic on the same Wi-Fi network, such as large downloads or video uploads.
- Test from a location with stronger signal and fewer obstructions.
- Remember that a speed test does not measure every source of delay; congestion and wireless interference can still affect controls.
There is no equivalent Sony threshold documented here for PS5 streaming from Steam Deck. Avoid treating Portal’s numbers as certified requirements for an unofficial Deck method.

Choose Portal when PS5 is the priority
- Your main library is installed on a PS5 and you want the least complicated handheld route into it.
- You want Sony’s documented Remote Play support rather than troubleshooting an unsupported client.
- You value DualSense-style haptics and adaptive triggers in compatible games.
- You can provide the required Wi-Fi connection and either keep the PS5 available or use eligible Premium cloud titles.
Choose Steam Deck when versatility is the priority
- You want to play compatible Steam games locally as well as experiment with other PC software.
- You accept that Sony does not list Deck as a supported Remote Play device.
- You are comfortable evaluating an unofficial setup yourself and dealing with unknown compatibility, controls and updates.
- Your reason for buying a handheld is broader than access to one PS5 library.
Do not choose based on an assumed latency winner
Neither the official Sony nor Valve material cited here supplies a controlled Portal-versus-Deck latency, image-quality or reliability benchmark. A claim that one device is universally faster or clearer would exceed the available evidence. Your router, PS5 connection, software route and physical distance can change the result substantially.
A practical buying checklist
- Identify the source of your games. If most games are on PS5, start with Portal’s official workflow. If most are on Steam, start with Deck’s native handheld role.
- Decide whether you need the PS5 console available. Ordinary Portal Remote Play uses your PS5. Portal cloud streaming can operate while the console is off or occupied, but only for eligible games and Premium members.
- Audit your Wi-Fi. For Portal, check whether your broadband Wi-Fi can meet Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and preferably the 15 Mbps recommendation in the places where you will play.
- List the controls you use. Games that rely on haptics or adaptive triggers have a documented path on Portal when supported; an unofficial Deck route may not reproduce every feature.
- Account for audio. Portal has a 3.5 mm jack and PlayStation Link support. Deck lists Bluetooth 5.0, with details depending on software and accessories.
- Separate official support from experimentation. If you need a predictable PS5 setup, do not assume that a community-created Deck method has Sony’s support, compatibility guarantees or the same controls.
Frequently misunderstood points
Does Portal replace a PS5?
No. Ordinary Remote Play requires a PS5 and streams compatible games installed on that console. Cloud streaming is a separate Premium service for eligible titles and does not make every PS5 game available without a console.
Can a Steam Deck play PS5 games?
Steam Deck can run compatible Steam games locally. Sony and Valve’s cited official pages do not establish Steam Deck as a supported PS5 Remote Play device. Any PS5 streaming attempt on Deck is therefore an unofficial configuration whose software behavior and game-feature support are not defined by those sources.
Does Remote Play require PlayStation Plus?
Sony states that ordinary PS Remote Play does not require PlayStation Plus. A game’s online multiplayer may have its own membership requirement. Portal cloud streaming, by contrast, is tied to PlayStation Plus Premium and eligible games.
Is every PS5 game available through Portal cloud streaming?
No. Sony describes access to select digital PS5 games from a member’s library and compatible titles in the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. Eligibility applies on a game-by-game basis.
Verdict
For a reader asking specifically how to play PS5 games away from the television, PlayStation Portal is the stronger recommendation because its hardware, controls and support path are designed and documented for that task. Steam Deck becomes the more compelling choice when a general-purpose Steam handheld matters as much as, or more than, PS5 access. Treat Deck-based PS5 streaming as an unsupported experiment, not as an equivalent official alternative, and make the decision with the network and subscription conditions above in view.
