Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShort answer: Start with the game’s Steam Deck compatibility badge. Verified should work comfortably with the Deck’s built-in controls and display; Playable can work but may need a community control layout, touchscreen input, or launcher setup; Unsupported is currently nonfunctional; and Unknown means Valve has not checked it. These ratings are snapshots that can change after game, middleware, anti-cheat, launcher, or Proton updates.
The badge is only the first check. A reliable decision also requires looking at controller prompts, text legibility at 1280×800 or 1280×720, launcher navigation, Proton dependencies, and whether the game’s online services permit play on the Deck.

What the Steam Deck compatibility badges actually tell you
Valve uses four labels in the Steam store and library. They describe the current state of a title on Steam Deck, not a permanent guarantee for every future update or every mode of play.

| Badge | Practical meaning | What you may still need to do |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | The game meets Valve’s Deck requirements and should work well out of the box. | Usually nothing beyond installing and launching; optional control or display changes remain available. |
| Playable | The game runs, but one or more aspects need manual adjustment or have a caveat. | Use a community controller layout, touchscreen, virtual keyboard, desktop mode, or a workaround for a launcher or small interface. |
| Unsupported | The title is currently not functional on Deck according to Valve’s review. | There is no dependable standard setup; an update could change the rating later. |
| Unknown | Valve has not checked the title. | Look for current player reports and be prepared to test it yourself; an Unknown badge is not an assurance of compatibility. |
Valve’s review considers more than whether a game starts. It checks controller support, input prompts, text, display resolution, launchers, and compatibility with Proton and the game’s middleware. A title can therefore boot successfully yet remain Playable because a menu is difficult to operate or text is too small.

Are the controls supported?
What Verified requires
For a Verified result, Valve requires full controller support, correct on-screen controller icons, and an on-screen keyboard that appears automatically when text input is needed. You should be able to navigate menus and play without reaching for a mouse and keyboard.
Correct prompts matter. A game that displays keyboard keys while you are holding a Deck controller can technically be playable, but the mismatch makes instructions confusing. Verified status is intended to avoid that problem.
How to change controls for one game
You can customize controls per title rather than changing the Deck globally:
- Open the game’s details page in Steam.
- Select the controller icon or the controller-layout option.
- Choose an official layout, a community layout, or a personal layout.
- Assign buttons, sticks, trackpads, back buttons, gyro actions, or keyboard commands as needed.
- Apply the layout and launch the game to test every important menu and gameplay action.
A community layout is most useful when the game works but expects mouse input, has incomplete native controller support, or places an infrequently used command on a keyboard key. Treat it as a setup requirement for a Playable title, not evidence that the game is Verified.
Signs that a control problem is fixable
- The game responds to a controller in gameplay but not in a launcher or configuration screen.
- Only a few keyboard commands are missing and can be mapped to spare buttons or a trackpad.
- The game has controller support but shows the wrong glyphs.
- Text entry works after invoking the Deck’s virtual keyboard manually.
If the game ignores input entirely, crashes before reaching its menus, or depends on an anti-cheat or middleware component that does not work through Proton, remapping will not solve the underlying compatibility issue.
Is the text readable on Steam Deck?
Resolution and legibility requirements
The Deck’s default display modes are 1280×800 and 1280×720. Valve’s requirement is explicit: “The game should support the default resolution of Steam Deck (1280×800 or 1280×720), have good default settings, and text should be legible.” A game designed around a larger monitor can technically render at the Deck’s resolution while leaving menus, subtitles, or tooltips uncomfortably small.

Valve’s Steamworks recommendations also encourage user-configurable text size and, where possible, contrast controls. Those options are especially valuable for dialogue-heavy games, strategy interfaces, inventory screens, and subtitles viewed at handheld distance.
What to check before accepting a Playable rating
- Can you read the main menu, settings labels, subtitles, and objective text without moving your face close to the screen?
- Does the game offer a UI scale, font-size, subtitle-size, or high-contrast setting?
- Do text boxes reflow correctly at 1280×800 and 1280×720, or are words clipped?
- Are important icons distinguishable without relying on tiny color differences?
If a game offers no scaling, increasing the system magnifier will not fix every interface element. You may need to switch between the available resolution modes, increase contrast, use the Deck closer to your eyes, or accept that the title is better suited to a larger screen. A fixed, tiny interface is a common reason for a Playable result even when performance is otherwise fine.
Do launchers work on Steam Deck?
Game Mode expectations
A launcher must be navigable with a controller for a game to meet the Verified standard. Valve recommends placing required functionality in the game client instead of making players operate a separate launcher. A launcher that requires a mouse, has fields that do not summon the virtual keyboard, or uses buttons too small for touch can turn an otherwise working game into a Playable experience.
When a launcher appears, try the Deck’s sticks, trackpads, triggers, touchscreen, and virtual keyboard. Some launchers accept controller input only after you click inside their window; others are usable with touch but not with the analog sticks. These are setup caveats, not necessarily signs that the game itself cannot run.
When Desktop Mode is the practical solution
Steam Support states: “While in Desktop Mode, Steam Deck functions like a normal PC.” In Desktop Mode you can browse, install applications, and run programs outside Steam. It is the practical route for software or launchers that were not designed for Game Mode.
Use Desktop Mode when you need to:
- Complete a one-time account sign-in or launcher configuration that is awkward with a controller.
- Install or update software outside the normal Steam game flow.
- Use a full browser, keyboard, or mouse for a setup screen.
- Test whether a failure belongs to the launcher rather than the game.
After setup, return to Game Mode and test a complete launch-to-game sequence. If every session requires Desktop Mode, the title is not delivering the out-of-box console-like experience implied by Verified.

Why Windows games run through Proton—and why results vary
Many Deck games do not have a native Linux build. Steam runs those Windows versions through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer. For a Verified review, the game and its middleware must be supported by Proton.
Compatibility is not determined by the executable alone. Middleware, copy-protection systems, launchers, graphics components, and anti-cheat services can each affect startup or online play. A Proton update can fix one title and expose a regression in another, while a game update can change its behavior without any hardware change.
That is why a badge is a current snapshot rather than a lifetime promise. If a previously working game changes after an update, test the Proton version offered in the game’s compatibility settings, verify files, and check whether the developer or Valve has acknowledged a regression. Avoid treating an old success report as proof that the present build works.

Can you play online and offline?
Online multiplayer
Valve’s guidance is direct: “Just like a PC, you’ll need to be online to download games and play online multiplayer games.” The Deck’s hardware does not bypass a game’s account, server, or anti-cheat requirements. A game may launch locally yet refuse multiplayer if its online service or anti-cheat system is not compatible with Proton.
Check the game’s current Deck notes and service requirements before buying it specifically for multiplayer. A Verified badge is useful evidence of a supported configuration, but online services can change independently of the game files.
Offline and single-player use
Once a game is installed, it can generally be played offline unless it requires an internet connection. Developers are encouraged to make single-player content available without internet, but some titles still require periodic sign-in, always-online authorization, or a launcher connection.

Prepare for offline use while connected:
- Install the game and launch it once online.
- Complete any account sign-in, license check, or first-run shader and content setup.
- Confirm that your intended single-player mode loads after temporarily disabling the connection.
- Keep the Deck charged and avoid assuming that multiplayer-only content will become available offline.
A compatibility checklist before you install

Treat Verified as the lowest-friction choice; treat Playable and Unknown as titles requiring investigation.
- Inspect controller needs. Identify whether every menu, text field, and gameplay action can be reached with the built-in controls or a remapped layout.
- Check text and resolution. Look for readable menus at 1280×800 or 1280×720, plus font-size and contrast options.
- Identify launchers. Determine whether a separate sign-in or store window appears and whether it is usable with a controller or touchscreen.
- Check Proton dependencies. Look for middleware, copy protection, graphics components, and anti-cheat that could affect startup or multiplayer.
- Separate online from offline needs. Confirm whether the mode you care about requires a server or an internet connection.
- Plan the fallback. Have a community layout, Desktop Mode, and a way to undo a change if the first configuration fails.
Troubleshooting common compatibility failures
The game launches but the menu cannot be controlled
Try touchscreen input and the trackpads first, then select a community layout that maps mouse movement and clicks. If the problem is confined to a separate launcher, complete setup in Desktop Mode and test the game again in Game Mode.
The virtual keyboard does not appear
Move focus to a recognized text field, invoke the on-screen keyboard manually, and test another layout. If the launcher never exposes a usable text field to Steam Input, it remains a launcher caveat rather than a simple button-mapping issue.
The interface is too small
Open the game’s display and accessibility settings and look for UI scale, font size, subtitle size, and contrast. Test both default resolutions. If labels remain fixed and illegible, the title may be functional but not comfortable for handheld play.
The game worked, then stopped after an update
Record what changed, verify the installation, and test the Proton version currently offered for the title. Recheck the badge and recent developer notes because compatibility can move in either direction after game, middleware, anti-cheat, or Proton updates.

Battery and practical expectations
Valve’s 2022 Steam Deck booklet gives a broad estimate of 2–8 hours per charge, depending on the game. Compatibility testing should therefore include a normal play session, not only a successful launch: demanding titles can provide a very different handheld experience from lightweight games, even when both are marked Verified.
For a long trip, install and launch the game before leaving, test the exact single-player content offline, and carry the control layout you intend to use. This catches launcher sign-in, text-entry, and license checks while you still have a connection.
How to interpret a game’s result in real life
Choose Verified for the console-like experience
Verified is the right target when you want to pick up the Deck and play without a mouse, keyboard, launcher workaround, or text-magnification compromise. It does not promise that every future update will behave identically, but it indicates that the current reviewed configuration meets Valve’s baseline.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose Playable when you accept a setup task
Playable can be a good choice when the only obstacle is a one-time launcher sign-in, a community layout, touchscreen navigation, or a display adjustment. Read the specific caveat and decide whether you are willing to repeat it after updates.
Treat Unknown as a hands-on experiment
Unknown simply means Valve has not checked the title. It may run perfectly, require substantial configuration, or fail for reasons that are not obvious from the store page. Buy or install it only if you can tolerate testing and troubleshooting.
