1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore buying a Steam game for a Steam Deck, open its current Steam store listing and read the Steam Deck compatibility rating and the details behind it. Then check controller support, accessibility attributes, and any online or anti-cheat requirements that matter to you. The rating is Valve’s testing snapshot—not a permanent promise of identical performance on every Deck, SteamOS release, Proton version, or game update.
Why the Steam Deck badge is only the first check
Steam Deck runs SteamOS, which is Linux-based. Many games built for Windows run through Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer, rather than through a native Linux build. Valve explains this technical model on its SteamOS Game Compatibility page. As a result, a game’s ordinary Windows system requirements do not answer the more practical question: will this title behave properly in SteamOS on a handheld with built-in controls?

Valve tests compatibility across the Steam catalog and exposes the result on individual store listings. The rating is designed to communicate the kind of experience to expect and can also be used to filter your library. That makes the live listing the right starting point, but not the only evidence you should use before spending money.

Step-by-step: check a game before you buy it
- Open the live Steam store page. Use the game’s current listing in the Steam client or on the web. Do not rely on an old screenshot, a search snippet, or a community post that does not show the present listing.
- Find the Steam Deck compatibility section. Look for the listing’s current compatibility category. Valve’s store and product information use categories such as Verified and Playable. The exact placement can vary between Steam’s desktop, web, and Deck interfaces.
- Open the rating details. Select the compatibility information instead of stopping at the category icon. The detail can contain qualifications about controls, text legibility, launch behavior, or other usability conditions. Those qualifications are often more useful than the category name by itself.
- Inspect controller support separately. On the same listing, review the controller-support attributes. A Deck rating does not tell you that every action is comfortable with buttons and sticks. Check whether the game expects a mouse pointer, trackpad, keyboard, frequent text entry, or interaction with a separate launcher.
- Check the accessibility attributes you personally need. Steam exposes accessibility features as separate store information. Look for relevant subtitle, text, visual, audio, or input options rather than assuming that a Deck category includes them.
- Investigate online dependencies. For a multiplayer game, look for current developer or store notices about required online services and anti-cheat. Valve’s 2022 explanation discussed developers working on anti-cheat support, but that general explanation does not establish the present online behavior of a particular title.
- Match the listing to your tolerance for compromises. Decide whether you are comfortable with occasional touch-screen use, a software keyboard, a trackpad, a launcher step, or manual control remapping. A game can be acceptable for one player and inconvenient for another even when both see the same category.
- Seek title-specific evidence for performance-sensitive purchases. If you require a particular frame-rate target, battery duration, graphics preset, or behavior after a recent patch, look for current evidence about that exact game. The compatibility label does not provide a universal frame-rate or battery guarantee.
How to interpret Verified and Playable
Valve uses compatibility categories to communicate different levels of expected usability on Deck. Verified and Playable are the labels most buyers encounter, but the important distinction is the qualification attached to the label, not a simplistic assumption that one category is flawless and the other is unusable.
| Listing information | What it tells you | What you still need to check |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | Valve’s program indicates that the title meets the program’s expectations for a usable Deck experience at the time of testing. | Whether the controls, text, accessibility options, online services, performance target, and current game version fit your needs. |
| Playable | The game can be used on Deck with one or more qualifications that may require attention or adjustment. | The exact detail behind the category. Valve has given inconsistent controller prompts as an example of a reason a title could be Playable rather than Verified. |
| Any category shown on an older page or image | Evidence of an earlier state only. | The current live listing, because game updates, SteamOS changes, Proton updates, and revised testing can change the status. |
The category is not a promise that every future update will behave the same way, nor is it a statement about your individual display, controls, operating-system version, or preferred settings. Treat it as Valve’s current compatibility snapshot and read the accompanying notes before deciding.
Read the details behind the badge
Valve’s program has considered whether a title’s controls and surrounding interface feel usable on Deck, not merely whether the executable starts. That is why the detail view deserves a deliberate read. A note about controller prompts, text entry, a launcher, or a menu that needs a touch screen can change your buying decision even when the game launches successfully.
Controller-prompt qualifications
Valve’s March 2022 update specifically used inconsistent controller prompts as an example of a condition that could lead to a Playable result instead of Verified. In practice, this means you should distinguish between “the game accepts input” and “the game consistently teaches you the right Deck button.” If the detail mentions prompts or layout, decide whether you can tolerate looking up keyboard equivalents or adjusting a control layout.

Launcher and first-run qualifications
A game may require an additional launcher or a first-run interaction that is easier with a touch screen, trackpad, or temporary keyboard input. If the detail mentions such a step, plan for it before buying rather than treating it as a defect discovered after a refund window or a trip without internet access.
Text and interface qualifications
Handheld use changes how small text, dense menus, and cursor-based interfaces feel. When the detail calls out legibility or a non-controller interface, compare that limitation with the way you intend to play. The Deck category does not replace your own judgment about reading comfort.
Check controller support as its own decision
Steam lists controller support separately from Deck compatibility. Use that information to answer a more specific question: can you perform the game’s important actions with the controls you are willing to use?
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Full controller use: Usually the simplest fit for sofa or handheld play, but still inspect the rating details for prompts or menu caveats.
- Mixed controller and pointer use: A title may play well with sticks and buttons during action but need a trackpad or touch screen for inventory, map, or setup screens.
- Keyboard-heavy play: Text entry, shortcuts, chat, or a large number of commands can make a game less convenient even when its compatibility category is favorable.
- Mouse-oriented interfaces: Strategy, simulation, creation, and management games may depend on precise pointer movement. Check whether the listing or rating details signal that kind of interaction and decide whether the Deck’s trackpads meet your expectations.
- External devices: If your plan depends on a separate keyboard, mouse, or controller, evaluate the game against that setup rather than assuming the built-in controls are sufficient.
Do not infer controller quality from the Windows system requirements. Those requirements describe software and hardware expectations for a different operating environment; they do not tell you how the game maps actions to Deck controls.

Use Steam’s accessibility information deliberately
Accessibility features are separate store attributes, so a favorable Deck rating does not guarantee the options you need. Before purchasing, identify the features that are essential rather than scanning for a generic accessibility claim.
- Check whether subtitles or captions are available if spoken dialogue cannot be relied on.
- Look for text-size, contrast, color, or visual settings that address your particular needs.
- Consider audio controls, remapping, hold-versus-toggle behavior, and other input options when they are listed.
- Review the game’s own documentation or current support notices when a store attribute does not answer an essential question.
Steam’s search and filter interface exposes Deck compatibility, controller support, and accessibility as distinct attributes. You can see the separate filter structure in Valve’s Steam store search. The separation is useful: it prevents a buyer from treating “works on Deck” as a substitute for “meets my accessibility requirements.”
Online play and anti-cheat need current, game-specific checking
Online functionality is a separate risk from launching a single-player campaign. A game can start correctly while a required service, account flow, or anti-cheat component prevents multiplayer access. Before buying an online-dependent title, check the current store description, developer announcements, and support documentation for that game.
Valve’s March 2022 announcement described anti-cheat support as an area in which developers were working with Valve. That historical statement explains why the general compatibility program cannot establish the present status of every online game. It is not evidence that a particular title’s anti-cheat works today, nor that a future update will preserve the same behavior.

If online access is central to your purchase, record the date you checked the notices and recheck immediately before buying. Pay attention to requirements for a separate account, an always-online connection, a launcher, or a service that may change independently of SteamOS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Proton and SteamOS make ratings time-sensitive
SteamOS is Linux-based, while many games in the Steam catalog are produced for Windows. Proton provides the compatibility layer that allows many of those Windows games to run on SteamOS. This is why a game can work on Deck without a native Linux edition, but it is also why compatibility can depend on several moving parts:
- the game’s current build and any newly added launcher, codec, or protection system;
- the SteamOS version installed on your Deck;
- the Proton version and related compatibility updates;
- Valve’s testing and any revised store classification; and
- the game’s online services or anti-cheat configuration.
Valve describes compatibility as something it continuously tests and updates. The practical consequence is simple: use the live listing for a current purchase, and do not treat a rating copied into a permanent buying guide as timeless.
A decision framework for different buyers
The same listing can lead to different decisions depending on what you consider acceptable. Use this framework after reading the category details.
Best Value
| Your priority | What to emphasize | When to pause before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Simple, controller-first play | Verified or Playable detail, controller attributes, and any prompt or menu qualifications. | The notes require frequent pointer, keyboard, or touch interaction that you do not want to use. |
| Accessibility-specific play | The individual accessibility attributes that match your needs. | An essential feature is absent, unclear, or documented only in an outdated source. |
| Competitive or online play | Current multiplayer, account, launcher, and anti-cheat information. | The game’s current online support is not confirmed by a recent, title-specific notice. |
| Performance-sensitive play | Recent reports or documentation for the exact game, patch, settings, and target you care about. | You are relying on the badge alone for frame rate, battery life, resolution, or graphics quality. |
| Low tolerance for setup | First-run steps, launchers, remapping, text entry, and whether the game resumes cleanly for your use. | The compatibility notes describe workarounds you would not want to repeat. |
What the rating does not promise
Do not read a Deck category as a guaranteed frame rate, battery duration, resolution, graphics preset, save-sync result, or online-service lifetime. The supplied Valve material establishes the purpose and changing nature of the compatibility rating; it does not establish a universal performance target for every title.
Your result can also differ from another player’s because of game updates, SteamOS and Proton changes, display settings, accessories, control preferences, or a personal need for subtitles and other features. When one of those variables is decisive, find evidence that addresses that variable specifically instead of stretching the meaning of the badge.
When a listing seems unclear or outdated
- Refresh the live listing. Confirm that you are looking at the current store page, not a cached search result or an old article.
- Open the details again. A category without its qualification is incomplete information.
- Check separate store attributes. Review controller support and accessibility filters independently.
- Look for a recent developer notice. This is especially important for online services, launchers, and anti-cheat.
- Decide whether uncertainty itself is a deal-breaker. If the game must meet a specific performance, accessibility, or multiplayer requirement and current evidence does not answer it, postponing the purchase is safer than assuming the badge covers that requirement.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying from the category alone: The category is a summary; the detail explains the compromises.
- Confusing Windows requirements with Deck suitability: Proton and SteamOS introduce compatibility questions that a Windows requirements box does not answer.
- Assuming Verified means permanent: Valve explicitly describes ratings as snapshots that change over time.
- Assuming Playable means broken: It signals qualifications to inspect, not an automatic verdict that the game cannot be enjoyed.
- Skipping controller attributes: A game can be compatible while still relying on a mouse, trackpad, keyboard, or touch input you do not want to use.
- Assuming accessibility is included in the badge: Steam exposes accessibility features separately, so check the specific option you need.
- Using a general anti-cheat statement as proof for one game: Online support must be checked for the current title.
- Expecting the label to answer battery or frame-rate questions: Seek title-specific, current evidence for those targets.
Five-minute purchase checklist
- Open the game’s current Steam store listing.
- Read the Steam Deck category and open its details.
- Note every qualification about controls, text, menus, launchers, or setup.
- Review controller-support attributes separately.
- Check the accessibility features that matter to you.
- For online games, verify current service and anti-cheat requirements.
- For performance-sensitive purchases, find evidence for the exact game and current patch rather than relying on the badge.
- Buy only when the documented experience matches your tolerance for setup and compromise.
This process takes longer than glancing at an icon, but it answers the questions the icon cannot: whether the controls fit, whether essential accessibility options exist, whether online play is currently supported, and whether the listing’s qualifications are acceptable to you.
