The decision in one minute
There is no defensible universal winner among these handheld PCs. The products are not being compared here with a matched test of the same games, resolution, power mode, display refresh rate, and settings, so a component name or peak specification cannot establish which one will deliver the highest frame rate in every game.
Use this order when deciding:
- Decide whether you need SteamOS or a Windows-based storefront and launcher. Your existing library and launcher requirements can rule out an otherwise attractive device.
- Identify the exact model and region. “ROG Ally” and “Legion Go” describe families with different processors, batteries, screens, storage, and prices.
- Compare the display and battery for that configuration. Screen size, panel type, refresh rate, variable-refresh support, and the manufacturer’s test conditions matter more than a product-family name.
- Check the current local price, stock, warranty, and included accessories. Valve’s listed US prices are a dated reference, not a guaranteed price in another country.
- Only then consider performance. Require a test that names the exact model, game, settings, power limit, resolution, and measurement method.
For a purchase available now, Valve’s Steam Deck OLED is the clearest reference point because it is an active product listing with published specifications. The ROG Ally and Legion Go require model-level verification before a fair comparison. Steam Deck 2 belongs in a “wait for an announcement” decision, not in a specification shoot-out.

What is actually known about Steam Deck 2?
Steam Deck 2 is not a listed, purchasable product on Valve’s current Steam Deck product page. A T3 report attributes the statement “We’re hard at work on it” to Valve programmer Pierre-Loup Griffais, referring to an IGN interview. That line confirms development activity, but it does not provide a release date, launch regions, price, processor, display, battery, or final operating-system changes. Read the attribution in context at T3’s report.
That distinction changes the buying decision. A rumored specification cannot tell you whether a future device will be larger, lighter, faster, more efficient, or cheaper than today’s models. It also cannot tell you when existing Steam Deck OLED stock will be replaced. If you need a handheld now, evaluate products that are actually listed and available. If your main reason for buying is the next Valve generation, set a budget aside and wait for an official announcement with confirmed specifications and availability.
Do not treat the Steam Deck OLED prices or specifications below as placeholders for Steam Deck 2. They describe the current OLED models only.

The current Valve option: Steam Deck OLED
Valve’s product page lists two OLED storage tiers: 512GB and 1TB NVMe SSD models. Both use a 7.4-inch, 1280 × 800 HDR OLED display with refresh up to 90Hz, a 6nm APU, Wi‑Fi 6E, and a 50Wh battery. Valve estimates 3–12 hours of play time depending on the content. That is a manufacturer estimate across variable workloads, not a single laboratory runtime that applies to every game.
| Steam Deck OLED detail | Published value |
|---|---|
| Storage models | 512GB NVMe SSD; 1TB NVMe SSD |
| Display | 7.4-inch, 1280 × 800 HDR OLED, up to 90Hz |
| APU process | 6nm |
| Wireless | Wi‑Fi 6E |
| Battery | 50Wh |
| Estimated play time | 3–12 hours, dependent on content |
| US listed price when checked | $789 for 512GB; $949 for 1TB |
The prices above were shown on Valve’s US product page when it was checked on October 13, 2026. They can change, and they do not establish a price in another market. Recheck the official Steam Deck page for the target country, stock status, warranty terms, and current price before publishing or ordering.
Valve also says all Steam Deck models support microSD expansion and describes an official Steam Deck Docking Station for connecting peripherals and external displays. Those features make the OLED a practical living-room or desk device as well as a portable one, but an accessory is not automatically necessary: decide based on whether you need additional game storage, wired peripherals, or a larger screen.
Why the exact ROG Ally model matters
“ROG Ally” is a shorthand for more than one product generation or configuration. AMD’s current handheld overview names the ROG Xbox Ally Series, while Valve’s SteamOS support material references ASUS ROG Ally X in a third-party-device context. Those references establish an active Ally family, not one invariant specification sheet.
Before comparing an Ally with the Steam Deck OLED, record the exact information from the manufacturer’s page or the retailer’s regional listing:

- Display size, resolution, panel type, refresh rate, and variable-refresh support
- Battery capacity and the stated operating modes
- Operating system and the storefronts or launchers you need
- Local price, stock, warranty, and included charger or case
Do not move a battery, processor, screen, or performance claim from one Ally model to another. A listing that simply says “ROG Ally” is not detailed enough for an apples-to-apples buying decision. Use AMD’s current handheld overview to identify the family, then confirm the precise ASUS SKU available in your market.
Why Legion Go is also a family
Lenovo markets Legion Go Gen 2 as an 8.8-inch handheld. Lenovo’s product pages and PSREF records are configuration-specific, and Lenovo warns that specifications and availability can vary by region. AMD’s overview says Legion Go handhelds use Ryzen Z2 and Z1 processors and highlights variable-refresh-rate display support and Legion Space. That information is useful for identifying the platform, but it is not permission to treat Legion Go Gen 2, Legion Go S, and the earlier Legion Go as interchangeable.
Check the exact Lenovo machine type before you compare price or performance. Lenovo’s US Legion Go Gen 2 page is here; the model-specific PSREF record is here. Those pages can differ from a listing sold in another country. Confirm the processor, RAM, storage, battery, display mode, operating system, accessories, and warranty for the unit in your cart.

Choose by software and game library first
When SteamOS is the deciding factor
SteamOS integration is the strongest reason to start with the Steam Deck OLED. The decision is not just about an operating-system label: it is about how much value you place on a console-like interface, a Steam-focused library view, suspend-and-resume behavior, controller-first navigation, and Valve’s own hardware-and-software integration. If most of your games are in Steam and you want the least friction between powering on and playing, put the OLED at the top of your shortlist.
Still, check the individual games that matter to you. Anti-cheat systems, launchers, middleware, peripherals, and compatibility layers can affect whether a particular title works as expected. A game that is essential to you should be validated before purchase rather than assumed compatible because another Steam game runs.
When Windows storefronts or launchers are essential
If your library depends on a Windows-only storefront, a publisher launcher, a subscription app, or a utility that is unavailable in your preferred SteamOS workflow, start by verifying the exact Ally or Legion Go configuration and its installed operating system. The evidence here does not support collapsing every Ally or every Legion Go into one identical software experience.

Compare the displays without being misled by size alone
The Steam Deck OLED has a known 7.4-inch 1280 × 800 HDR OLED panel with refresh up to 90Hz. Lenovo describes Legion Go Gen 2 as an 8.8-inch handheld, but the complete display specification depends on the exact configuration. An 8.8-inch screen can make text, strategy interfaces, and desktop controls easier to see, while a smaller device may be easier to carry; neither fact alone establishes image quality or game performance.
For each candidate, record the following in one place:
- Diagonal size and aspect ratio
- Native resolution
- Panel technology and HDR support
- Maximum refresh rate
- Whether variable refresh rate is available and under which mode
- Brightness and any stated color specification
- How the display setting affects battery life
Do not compare a manufacturer’s maximum refresh rate on one device with a locked game setting on another and call the difference performance. Refresh rate is a display capability; the game still has to render enough frames to use it. Likewise, a higher native resolution can improve sharpness but can increase the workload at a given quality setting.
Battery claims need their test conditions
Valve’s Steam Deck OLED estimate is 3–12 hours depending on content. That wide range is a warning not to turn a manufacturer estimate into a promise. An undemanding 2D game, a capped frame rate, reduced brightness, wireless settings, and a demanding 3D title can produce very different runtimes on the same handheld.
When a retailer or manufacturer quotes battery life for an Ally or Legion Go, capture the conditions with the number: game or video workload, screen brightness, refresh rate, power profile, wireless state, and whether the result is a maximum, a typical figure, or a test measurement. Do not compare the top end of one company’s estimate with the bottom end of another company’s estimate.
For your own use, prioritize the scenario that matches your routine. If you play short sessions near a charger, peak performance may matter more. If you travel without reliable outlets, a lower-power mode, a larger battery, or an efficient display setting may be more valuable than a headline processor tier. A handheld that lasts through your actual commute is a better fit than one that wins a specification chart but needs a charger halfway through the trip.
How to interpret performance claims
The available evidence does not contain a verified, controlled comparison of the exact Steam Deck OLED, ROG Ally, and Legion Go configurations under matched conditions. There is therefore no supported numeric FPS winner to publish for this set of products.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A useful performance comparison must disclose:
- Exact model number and firmware or driver state
- Game version and in-game preset
- Resolution, upscaling method, and frame-generation settings
- Power limit or performance profile
- Display refresh rate and frame cap
- Average and low-percentile frame rates, not just a peak
- Power draw, temperature, fan behavior, and test duration
Without those details, “faster” can mean a higher theoretical GPU figure, a higher short-term boost, a larger screen running at a different resolution, or a benchmark that favors one power mode. Treat component names as clues for what to investigate, not as proof of your experience in a particular game.

Price and value: compare like with like
Valve’s US listing showed $789 for the 512GB Steam Deck OLED and $949 for the 1TB model on October 13, 2026. Those are the values available at that check, not a permanent worldwide MSRP. Currency conversion, tax, shipping, local distribution, sales, and warranty coverage can change the real cost substantially.
For an Ally or Legion Go, do not compare a discounted base model with the 1TB OLED at full price and then call one a better value. Build a same-tier worksheet:
- Use the same country and currency.
- Match storage capacity as closely as possible.
- Record RAM and processor differences.
- Include the charger, case, dock, or detachable-controller accessories you would actually buy.
- Add shipping, tax, return costs, and warranty terms.
- Note whether the listed price is a temporary promotion or a recurring price.
Storage also affects value differently by user. A 512GB drive may be enough if you rotate games and use a compatible microSD card. A 1TB internal drive can be worthwhile for large games, faster local installs, or less card management. Valve confirms microSD expansion for Steam Deck models, but card performance and game compatibility can vary, so choose a reputable, properly rated card rather than treating every card as equivalent.
Portability, controls, and desk use
Do not rank ergonomics from product-family names. No controlled comfort, weight, button-layout, or screen-legibility test across the three families is established in the cited product material. Verify dimensions, weight, grip shape, stick and button placement, trackpads, detachable controllers, kickstand design, port layout, and included case on the exact model page.
Think through where the device will be used:
- Travel: weight, case size, battery behavior, and access to charging outlets matter.
- Sofa play: grip comfort, suspend behavior, wireless reliability, and screen readability matter.
- Desk or monitor use: USB, video output, dock compatibility, and peripheral support matter.
- Desktop-style tasks: trackpads, keyboard access, text scaling, and the operating system’s desktop workflow matter.
Valve’s official Docking Station is designed to connect peripherals and displays to a Steam Deck. That makes the OLED a plausible single-device setup for portable and docked use, but check the dock’s current contents and compatibility on Valve’s page before ordering. The same principle applies to any third-party dock for another handheld: confirm power delivery, display output, USB ports, and firmware support for the precise model.
A practical buying checklist
- Write down your non-negotiable games and launchers. Separate Steam titles from games that require another storefront, launcher, anti-cheat system, or mod tool.
- Choose the current product or wait. Select a listed product if you need a device now. Wait for an official Valve announcement if Steam Deck 2 itself is the reason you are shopping.
- Capture the full SKU. Save the model number, not just “Ally” or “Legion Go.”
- Verify the display. Record size, resolution, panel, refresh rate, and VRR for that SKU.
- Verify battery information. Keep the manufacturer’s test qualification beside the runtime figure.
- Check software support. Confirm the operating system, storefronts, launcher behavior, controller support, and any game-specific compatibility concerns.
- Calculate the delivered cost. Include storage expansion, dock, case, tax, shipping, and warranty differences.
- Check return and repair terms. A handheld is a compact computer with a built-in display and controls; local service can matter more than a small specification advantage.
- Read a controlled test if performance is decisive. Reject comparisons that omit model, settings, power mode, or game version.
Which handheld fits each type of buyer?
Choose the Steam Deck OLED if your priority is an integrated SteamOS experience
The Steam Deck OLED is the most straightforward current choice for someone who wants Valve’s listed hardware, a Steam-focused interface, a 7.4-inch HDR OLED display, and published 512GB or 1TB configurations. Its battery estimate, Wi‑Fi 6E support, microSD expansion, and optional Docking Station are documented by Valve. Confirm that your essential games and launchers fit your workflow before ordering.
Investigate an ROG Ally when the exact ASUS configuration matches your software or hardware needs
An Ally can be a sensible choice when a particular model offers the operating system, storefront access, display behavior, battery, memory, or regional price you need. The recommendation must name the model. Do not buy from a listing that leaves the generation or SKU ambiguous, and do not assume a specification from one Ally variant applies to another.
Investigate Legion Go when the larger-format design or a specific configuration is the attraction
Legion Go Gen 2’s marketed 8.8-inch format may appeal to readers who value a larger viewing area, and AMD identifies VRR support and Legion Space across relevant Legion Go material. Verify whether the unit is Gen 2, Legion Go S, or an earlier model, then read the local Lenovo specification record for the processor, battery, storage, display, and included hardware.

Wait for Steam Deck 2 if you specifically want the next Valve generation
The only responsible expectation today is that development work has been acknowledged. There is no confirmed launch window or final specification in the available evidence. Waiting is rational when the successor itself is your objective; buying a current handheld and expecting an unannounced upgrade path is not.
Common comparison mistakes
Using a family name as if it were a model number
“ROG Ally” and “Legion Go” can conceal meaningful differences. Always copy the complete model identifier from the listing and match it to the manufacturer’s technical page.
Calling a theoretical specification a benchmark
Processor branding and peak figures do not account for power limits, cooling, drivers, game engines, resolution, or frame caps. A benchmark without those details cannot answer your real use case.

Assuming a current price is permanent
The Steam Deck OLED prices cited here were a US snapshot from October 13, 2026. Stock, promotions, tax, and regional pricing can change. Recheck before publication or purchase.
Buying for an unannounced successor
Steam Deck 2 has no confirmed retail date or final specification in the evidence available here. Rumors should not determine a present-day hardware purchase.
Bottom line
For a buyer who wants a documented Valve product today and values SteamOS integration, start with the Steam Deck OLED. For a buyer whose library, display preference, or preferred configuration points elsewhere, compare the exact ROG Ally or Legion Go SKU sold in the relevant region. For anyone shopping specifically for Steam Deck 2, wait for Valve to announce the product and its real specifications.
