AMD’s “Gainsborough” codename has reportedly surfaced in driver material, prompting speculation that it could be connected to a future Steam Deck. But neither Valve nor AMD has confirmed that link—or the reported Zen 6, RDNA 5 and TSMC N3P specifications. For now, Gainsborough is a possible clue, not an announced Steam Deck 2 chip.
Is Gainsborough the Steam Deck 2 chip?
It has not been confirmed. Reports say “Gainsborough” appeared in AMD driver material, and a separate reported shipping-manifest entry associates the name with a package designation. Those clues do not identify the chip’s customer or device. The connection to Valve is speculation, not an announcement.

The name has added to the speculation: “Aerith” and “Sephiroth” have been reported as names associated with current Steam Deck APUs, and Aerith Gainsborough is a character in Final Fantasy VII. That resemblance is circumstantial; it does not establish that Gainsborough is intended for a Steam Deck.
AMD has documented a partnership with Valve to develop a semi-custom APU optimized for handheld gaming for the current Steam Deck. That confirms the existing partnership, not the identity or purpose of Gainsborough. (AMD Form 10-K)

What the Gainsborough reports claim
Leak coverage attributes several possible specifications to the chip. These are reported claims, not confirmed product details:
- CPU: Zen 6. One report gives a broad estimate of four to eight Zen 6C-class cores.
- Graphics: RDNA 5, with one report estimating 12 to 24 compute units.
- Manufacturing: TSMC N3P.
The reviewed coverage does not establish clock speeds, memory configuration, power envelope, or a final package specification. It also does not establish an AMD announcement of RDNA 5 as a released graphics architecture; Digital Citizen notes that the AMD graphics page it reviewed stopped at RDNA 4. Treat RDNA 5 here as a leak claim, not a confirmed AMD product specification.

PC Gamer relays a leaker’s estimate that the chip could be ready in late 2027 or early 2028. That is an estimate about possible chip readiness, not a Valve release window; it does not establish when, or whether, a handheld using it would launch. (PC Gamer; Hardware Busters)
How the rumor compares with the current Steam Deck
Valve’s published specifications provide a useful baseline, but they describe the current Steam Deck—not a successor. The rumored column contains only claims and gaps reported for Gainsborough.

Valve’s technical specifications and hardware overview list the current Deck’s custom AMD APU, Zen 2 CPU, RDNA 2 graphics and microSD expansion. The figures are product specifications, not independent performance-test results. They should not be read as specifications for a future model.

Digital Citizen reports that Steam Deck designer Lawrence Yang described Valve’s approach as “not doing the yearly cadence” and said the company would not “do a bump every year.” The same outlet reports Yang’s stated bar for a successor as “a generational leap in compute without sacrificing battery life.” These are statements attributed to Yang by Digital Citizen, not a published successor specification. - Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
That reported standard helps explain why an architectural jump alone would not settle whether a chip is right for a handheld. A successor would also need to meet Valve’s stated battery-life condition. The reports do not show how Gainsborough would perform in a finished device or whether it meets that bar.

What remains unknown
As of October 3, 2026, no official Steam Deck successor chip, specifications, product name, price, or release window was established in the sources reviewed. There is also no confirmed memory configuration, power envelope, clock speed, or compatibility information for a future model. A reported chip-readiness estimate cannot fill in those product details.
Current Steam Deck owners can use a microSD card for storage expansion, as Valve documents. That support applies to the current device; it does not establish future-model compatibility. (Valve: Steam Deck hardware)
