Neither is universally better. Steam Curators are best for discovering games through a viewpoint you can evaluate, while user reviews are best for checking what players are experiencing now. A reliable approach is to find candidates through a curator whose taste matches yours, then read recent, specific reviews to verify performance, updates, value and other concerns that matter to you.
What each Steam feature is designed to do
The two systems answer different questions. A curator helps with “What might I like?” A review helps with “What are people experiencing, and is the game in a condition I can accept?” Treating either as a universal rating system hides the information each one is good at providing.

Curator recommendations are a point of view
Steam defines a curator as an individual or organization that recommends games to help people discover titles in the Steam catalog. You can follow a curator and see its recommendations on your Steam home page and in the Community activity feed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSteam’s suggested-curator system considers the games a curator recommends and how well those picks fit games you have played recently. That can make suggestions more relevant than a completely generic list, but it does not prove that a curator will share your taste. The quality of the match still depends on the curator’s focus and your own preferences.

A curator page can include a tagline, written explanations, video reviews and curated lists. Those details let you judge the recommendation rather than accepting a title solely because it appears in a feed. A curator focused on a particular genre, play style or accessibility concern can also narrow an enormous catalog into a manageable set of candidates.
User reviews are a collection of player experiences
Steam lets users with recorded playtime write a review indicating whether they recommend a game. Reviews can describe the player’s own experience with performance, bugs, matchmaking, price, updates, community behavior, accessibility and many other practical factors.
The store page shows separate recent and lifetime review scores. Individual reviews are surfaced according to factors including helpfulness and recency, so the first comments you see are not necessarily a random sample of every review that exists. Steam also provides review lists and filters that help you examine different slices of the feedback.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →There is an important scoring distinction: only a game purchase made on Steam by the reviewing account counts toward the displayed review score. A person may still be able to post a readable review after launching through another route, such as a product key, a free weekend, a free game or Family Library Sharing. Those reviews can contain useful information, but they do not contribute to the aggregate score under Steam’s stated rules.
Curators and reviews compared
| Question | Curator recommendations | User reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Whose judgment is it? | A named person, group or organization. You can screen its taste by looking at past picks and its stated focus. | Individual players with recorded playtime. The aggregate score follows Steam’s purchase-based scoring rules. |
| What context accompanies the signal? | A curator may explain the recommendation and may provide video reviews or links to longer-form work on its page. | A player can describe a personal session or long-term experience. Helpfulness and recency influence which reviews are prominent. |
| Main strength | Consistent editorial perspective, especially for a niche, genre or specific type of player. | Breadth of experiences and concrete reports about the game’s current condition, changes and value. |
| Best question to ask | Does this curator’s taste and focus resemble mine? | Are these comments recent, specific and relevant to what I need to know? |
| Main limitation | One viewpoint can miss games you would enjoy or recommend a title that does not suit you. | A score compresses many experiences into one signal, and visible reviews are shaped by platform selection and timing. |
| Useful evidence to inspect | Several past recommendations, the tagline, explanations, lists and any linked or embedded video. | Recent helpful reviews, review dates, author playtime, purchase context and recurring details across multiple comments. |
Neither column is an objective verdict. A curator’s recommendation is an informed lead; a positive or negative review is one player’s account; and a percentage score is an aggregate produced under Steam’s rules.
When a curator is the better starting point
You have a specific taste or niche
Curators are especially useful when a broad store search produces too many plausible games. A curator devoted to a genre, unusual mechanic, narrative style, difficulty level, co-op format or accessibility need can perform the initial filtering for you. The value comes from the consistency of the lens, not from the number of followers.
You want discovery rather than diagnosis
Reviews usually gather around games you already know to search for. A curator can introduce a title that is outside the most visible part of the store. Curated lists and a curator’s activity feed can reveal related games without requiring you to guess the right search terms.

You can verify the curator’s track record
Before following, open several recommendations and ask whether you would genuinely consider most of them. Compare the games’ genres, tone, complexity and intended audience with your own preferences. Read the tagline and explanations to see whether the curator gives reasons that are meaningful to you. A high follower count is not a substitute for this check.
When user reviews are the better source
You need current-condition information
Reviews are the practical tool for investigating whether a game works well today. Look for concrete reports about frame-rate problems, crashes, controller support, matchmaking queues, server reliability, save issues, monetization, update regressions or a shrinking player base. These details are more actionable than a bare recommendation.
The game has changed since launch
A lifetime score can include the launch version, years of patches and earlier service conditions. Steam displays a separate recent score so you can compare the longer history with a newer snapshot. A high lifetime score does not establish that the current build still feels the same, and a poor early reception does not automatically describe a repaired game.
Your decision depends on a narrow requirement
If you need a particular language, accessibility option, input method, hardware configuration or multiplayer mode, search reviews for explicit evidence instead of inferring compatibility from the score. Give more weight to comments that identify the version or update, explain the test conditions and state whether the issue is reproducible.

Helpful and recent are different signals
A helpful review may explain a problem clearly, include useful context or have received many helpfulness votes. A recent review may better reflect the current build. The most useful comment for your purchase can be recent, highly helpful, both or neither, depending on your question. Check the date and the substance rather than assuming that the top review is the latest truth.
Read beyond the aggregate score
The positive/negative percentage is an orientation point. It cannot tell you whether negative comments concern issues you consider minor, or whether positive comments come from players with priorities unlike yours. Read enough recent comments to identify repeated themes, then decide whether those themes matter for your use case.
Understand purchase and access context
Steam’s documentation distinguishes reviews that count toward the score from readable reviews written after other forms of access. When comparing comments, note whether the author purchased the game on Steam, how much time they recorded and whether they played during Early Access. Access context does not determine whether a review is truthful, but it helps you interpret the aggregate and the individual account separately.

Use the available filters deliberately
Steam’s review tools can distinguish recent and helpfulness-oriented lists and expose filters for language, sentiment, purchase type and off-topic activity. If you are evaluating a multiplayer game, for example, select the language you read comfortably, examine recent negative and positive comments, and look for purchase-context differences before drawing a conclusion.

Review-bomb periods and off-topic activity
Steam says that off-topic review-bomb periods are excluded from the overall score and identified for customers. The review API’s default behavior also filters off-topic activity from its review list. This platform handling prevents an unrelated coordinated period from automatically dominating the aggregate, but it is not a reason to dismiss an ordinary wave of relevant criticism.
First determine whether the comments discuss the game itself. Complaints about crashes after a current update, broken matchmaking or a changed feature are on-topic even when many people post them at once. An unrelated dispute that produces reviews about matters outside the game is a different case. Use the labels and dates Steam provides, then read the underlying comments before deciding how much weight to assign them.
A practical workflow that combines both signals
- Define your decision criteria. Write down the two or three factors that can make the purchase worthwhile or pointless for you: genre and tone, solo or multiplayer play, accessibility, controller support, performance, price tolerance or another concrete requirement.
- Choose a curator with a matching focus. Browse curator pages or Steam’s suggestions. Read the tagline and inspect several recommendations. Continue only if the past picks resemble games you actually enjoy or would consider buying.
- Use the curator to build a candidate list. Save a small number of titles rather than treating every recommendation as a purchase. Read the curator’s explanation, curated list entry or video review when available, and record the specific reason each game made your list.
- Open each candidate’s store-page reviews. Start with recent and helpful comments, then switch between positive and negative sentiment when you need a balanced view. Apply language, purchase-type and other relevant filters.
- Search for evidence tied to your criteria. Ignore vague praise or outrage when it does not answer your question. Look for specific descriptions of frame rate, crashes, queue times, updates, controls, content length, value or another requirement you identified.
- Compare recent and lifetime scores. A large gap can indicate a changed experience, a temporary problem or a difference in who is reviewing now. Use the comments and dates to identify which explanation is plausible; the gap alone does not explain itself.
- Check for repeated patterns. One isolated complaint may be a hardware-specific or personal issue. Several recent, independent comments describing the same behavior deserve more attention, especially when they include dates, update references or comparable circumstances.
- Make a priority-based decision. Buy, wait for a patch, seek a refund under Steam’s applicable policy or skip the game according to your own tolerance for the reported issues. Neither the curator nor the crowd can make that trade-off for you.
How to interpret common combinations of signals
Positive curator, strong recent reviews
This is the simplest case: the game fits a viewpoint you trust and current players mostly report an acceptable experience. Still verify any requirement that is important enough to affect the purchase, such as a specific controller or accessibility feature.
Positive curator, weak recent reviews
The curator may be recommending the game’s design, story or originality while players are reporting current technical or service problems. Read the negative comments to determine whether the issue is temporary, hardware-specific, restricted to multiplayer or fundamental to the game. You may decide to wait even if the curator’s taste is an excellent match.
Negative curator, strong recent reviews
A curator’s dislike can be perfectly consistent with your preferences. The curator may object to a mechanic, pacing choice or business model that you value differently. Read the explanation and then sample reviews for evidence about whether the disagreement is a deal-breaker or simply a taste difference.
Mixed or polarized reviews
Polarization often means the game’s audience is divided by play style, expectations, hardware, updates or monetization. Sort by recent and helpful reviews, identify the dividing issue and decide which side of that issue describes you. A middle score without this context is not enough to explain the split.

Strong lifetime score, poor recent score
Investigate what changed and when. Recent comments may describe a damaging update, a service decline or a new issue that did not exist for earlier players. The lifetime result remains useful historical context, but it should not override current evidence when you are buying the present version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What deeper review details can reveal
For most purchases, the store page is sufficient. Steam’s review data also exposes fields such as review creation and update times, language, helpfulness votes, author playtime, Steam-purchase status and whether the review was written during Early Access. These fields can help you weigh evidence more carefully.

- Creation and update time: separates launch impressions from comments that reflect a later build.
- Author playtime: distinguishes a first-session reaction from an account based on extended use, while remembering that more hours do not automatically make an opinion correct.
- Language: helps you compare comments you can evaluate directly and avoid relying on an imperfect translation for a nuanced technical claim.
- Helpfulness votes: indicate which readers found a review useful, not whether its conclusion matches your own priorities.
- Steam-purchase status: explains whether the review contributes to the displayed score under Steam’s rules.
- Early Access status: warns that expectations and reported bugs may concern an unfinished version rather than the eventual release.
These fields are context, not a mechanical ranking formula. A short, recent report of a reproducible crash may matter more to you than a highly voted general review from years earlier.
Common mistakes to avoid
Choosing by follower count
Popularity can reflect reach, entertainment value or longevity rather than a match for your taste. Evaluate the actual recommendations and explanations before following a curator.
Choosing by percentage alone
A score hides the reasons behind approval or rejection and reflects only qualifying Steam purchases. Open the comments that address your requirements and inspect their dates.
Confusing visibility with representativeness
The reviews displayed most prominently are selected through helpfulness and recency signals. They are useful starting points, not a complete census of every player.
Rejecting all criticism as review bombing
Steam’s off-topic handling is designed for unrelated activity. Relevant complaints about a broken update or a changed service still provide information, even when many players post them together.
Best Value
Assuming a curator has tested every relevant condition
A recommendation may reflect a curator’s experience and priorities, not your hardware, network, accessibility needs or multiplayer schedule. Use reviews to check conditions the curator does not discuss.
Reading only one side of the feedback
Positive comments reveal what works for fans; negative comments reveal failure modes and trade-offs. Read both when the purchase is expensive, time-consuming or difficult to refund.
Which method should you use first?
| Your situation | Start with | Then verify with |
|---|---|---|
| You know the genre but not the specific game. | A curator whose past picks match that genre and your taste. | Recent reviews for current performance and recurring concerns. |
| You are considering a game after an update. | Recent user reviews. | The curator’s explanation only if you need help judging the game’s underlying design. |
| You have a strict accessibility or hardware requirement. | User reviews containing explicit, recent evidence. | A curator focused on that need, if its descriptions address the same requirement. |
| You want unusual or overlooked games. | Curated lists and a niche curator’s recommendations. | Reviews to check whether the less-visible title is functional and supported. |
| You are deciding between several familiar games. | Recent and helpful reviews for each candidate. | Curator commentary to understand differences in design or audience. |
| The scores are polarized. | Recent reviews sorted by sentiment and filtered for relevance. | The curator’s explanation to see whether the disagreement is a taste issue. |
What Steam’s documentation does—and does not—establish
Steam’s official descriptions explain how curators, review scores, review selection and filters operate. They do not establish that curator recommendations consistently find better games than user reviews, or that reviews have a higher success rate. No independent comparative statistic supports such a universal ranking.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe most defensible conclusion is therefore functional rather than numerical: curators are a discovery and taste-matching tool; reviews are a condition-checking and experience-reporting tool. Their signals overlap, but they are not interchangeable.
Bottom line for finding games on Steam
Use a curator to reduce the search space when you want a recognizable perspective, then use recent, specific user reviews to test whether each candidate fits your current needs. Check the curator’s past picks instead of follower count. Check review dates, helpfulness, purchase context, playtime and repeated concrete reports instead of relying on the percentage alone. Compare recent and lifetime scores when the game has changed.
This two-stage method respects what each feature can actually tell you. It improves discovery without pretending that a curator guarantees personal enjoyment, and it uses player feedback without treating an aggregate score as an objective verdict.
