Valve’s October 16, 2026 Steam Client Beta update adds a second round of startup-performance work. Valve says the first round had already shipped in the public client, so stable users have received earlier improvements; the new round is currently tied to Steam’s Preview/Beta channel. The notes do not publish a startup-time reduction, benchmark, hardware requirement, or technical explanation of which startup stages changed.

What changed in the October 16 Steam Client Beta?

The headline entry in Valve’s changelog reads: “Second round of Steam startup performance improvements following shipping of prior improvements in public client.” That wording describes an incremental rollout rather than a single, fully quantified speed upgrade. An earlier startup change reached the public client, and the October 16 beta continues the work for testers.

The update is maintenance-focused. It combines the startup changes with fixes for Steam’s service, friends list, Steam Frame content, voice chat, Linux compatibility and Steam Input.

Startup performance: what users can and cannot expect

What is established

  • The October 16 build contains a second round of startup-performance improvements.
  • At least one earlier startup improvement had already moved to the public client.
  • The new round is announced for the Preview/Beta channel.

What Valve has not quantified

Valve’s October 16 notes provide no measured reduction in seconds, percentage improvement, benchmark, hardware-specific result or description of the startup stages that changed. Startup responsiveness can therefore improve without a reliable published number that applies to every PC. Claims such as “Steam now starts a specific number of seconds faster” are not supported by this changelog.

Steam Frame on Windows Prevents native-only content from incorrectly appearing installable on Windows.
Voice chat Fixes the context menu’s volume-slider layout and stops output-volume settings from resetting between Steam sessions.

How the startup work fits the beta timeline

Date Channel and entry Meaning
September 29, 2026 Steam Client Beta Valve recorded an earlier “Improved Steam Client startup performance” change.
October 16, 2026 Steam Client Beta Valve announced a second round after the prior improvements shipped in the public client.

This sequence indicates staged testing: an initial change was validated well enough to ship publicly, while another round remained in beta for further testing.

Is the improvement available in the stable Steam client?

The earlier startup improvements are available in the public client according to Valve’s wording. The second round is identified in the October 16 Preview/Beta notes, so the changelog does not establish that this specific round has reached stable Steam. Stable-client users should wait for Valve’s normal release process if they do not want beta software.

Should you opt into Steam Client Beta?

Choose the Preview/Beta channel if you want to test the new startup work immediately or if one of the listed fixes addresses a problem you have. Linux users affected by Vulkan Alt-Tab hangs or native non-Steam launch failures, and users whose voice-volume settings keep resetting, have a concrete reason to consider testing.

Stay on the public client if predictable behavior matters more than accessing an incremental performance change. Beta builds can expose regressions before fixes reach everyone, and the October 16 notes do not promise a measurable startup-time gain for a particular computer.

General enrollment approach

  1. Open Steam’s client settings and find the section for client or beta participation.
  2. Select the Preview/Beta channel offered by Steam, then allow the client to download and restart into the test build.
  3. After restarting, verify the client version and test the behavior relevant to you—startup, voice settings, Linux game launching or Steam Input—before relying on the beta for routine use.
  4. If the build causes a regression, return to the public or stable channel in the same settings area and restart Steam again.

Menu labels can change between Steam client revisions, so use the beta-participation control shown in your current settings rather than relying on an older screenshot or guide.

What this release means for Steam users

The October 16 beta is a continuation of Valve’s startup-performance work, not a published benchmark release. Public-client users already benefit from the earlier round, while testers can evaluate the second round alongside a set of targeted Windows, Linux, voice-chat, service and controller fixes. Because no numeric result is available, the practical choice is channel stability versus early access to the latest maintenance changes.

  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
