Big Art Mode is only a home-screen presentation option inside that interface. Turning on Big Art Mode changes how artwork appears on the Big Picture home screen; it does not replace Big Picture, add a second Steam client or change the rest of Steam’s navigation.
Big Picture Mode is the whole interface
Valve describes Big Picture as “a mode of Steam designed for use with your TV and game controller, so you can enjoy your Steam games from the comfort of your couch.” It presents a full-screen Steam interface redesigned for readability and interaction on a television. Although TV and couch use are the main purpose, Valve also says Big Picture can be used on a normal computer display.

In practical terms, Big Picture is the environment in which you browse the library, launch games and move through Steam with controller-oriented interaction. It is a mode that changes the way Steam is operated, not merely the way one panel looks.
Big Art Mode is a home-screen visual setting
Big Art Mode is a presentation choice within the Big Picture experience. Valve’s Steam Client Beta announcement dated September 9, 2026 says: “Added a new ‘Big Art Mode’ option for the home screen. This can be enabled in Settings > Home.” The wording matters: the option belongs to the home screen, so it changes that screen’s visual treatment rather than creating a separate mode for the entire Steam client.

The same announcement lists a game-art slideshow and a retro-inspired bouncing-logo screensaver as separate screensaver choices. Those screensaver options should not be confused with Big Art Mode. A slideshow or screensaver can be selected independently; Big Art Mode is specifically the home-screen option.

| Primary purpose | Readable, controller-friendly Steam navigation on a TV, couch or ordinary monitor | Artwork-focused presentation on the home screen |
| What it changes | How you move through Steam, view the library and start games | How game artwork is presented on the home screen |
| Controller relationship | Designed around controller-oriented interaction; Valve documents controller setup and per-game configuration in Big Picture | Primarily cosmetic; it does not replace the controller-oriented interface |
| Can it be used alone? | Yes. Big Picture can be used without Big Art Mode | No separate client or navigation system; it is subordinate to the Big Picture home screen |

How the two features fit together
Think of Big Picture as the room and Big Art Mode as the decoration on one wall. Entering Big Picture gives you the full-screen Steam environment. Choosing Big Art Mode changes the home screen shown inside that environment. The two choices are therefore complementary, not competing versions of Steam.
You can use Big Picture with its ordinary home-screen layout. You can also enable Big Art Mode while continuing to use the same library, game-launching controls and controller navigation supplied by Big Picture. Enabling the art option does not turn off Big Picture, and entering Big Picture does not require the art option.
What changes when Big Art Mode is enabled?
The documented change is the home-screen presentation of game artwork. This makes the setting useful when the first screen you see in Steam is part of the experience you care about—for example, when Steam is displayed across a room and you prefer a more visual, artwork-led landing screen.

Big Art Mode does not, on the evidence available, promise a different controller protocol, a new library organization, faster game launches, a separate account state or a different rendering mode for games. Those functions remain part of the broader Big Picture environment or the games themselves.
Do not treat the related screensaver choices as evidence that Big Art Mode is a screensaver. Valve lists the game-art slideshow and bouncing-logo screensaver separately. A screensaver can run after inactivity; Big Art Mode is a home-screen presentation option.
How to enable Big Art Mode
Valve’s beta note gives the relevant location directly:
- Open Steam’s Big Picture experience.
- Open Settings.
- Select Home.
- Enable the Big Art Mode option.
Labels and surrounding controls can change as Steam updates its client. If the option is absent, first check whether the desktop client is running a build that includes the feature. The cited announcement is for Steam Client Beta, so the setting may not yet be present in a stable build or on every desktop platform.

How to use Big Picture Mode for TV and controller play
Big Picture is the appropriate choice when the objective is to operate Steam from a television or from a couch with a game controller. Valve’s support description specifically emphasizes a full-screen interface redesigned for TV readability and interaction.
- Connect the computer to the display you intend to use, such as a television or a regular monitor.
- Connect and, if necessary, pair the game controller with the computer using the controller’s normal operating-system procedure.
- Launch Steam’s Big Picture command from the desktop client. The button or menu placement can vary by client version.
- Use the controller-oriented interface to move through Steam, open the library and launch a game.
- For games that need individual adjustments, use Big Picture’s controller setup or per-game configuration controls. Valve documents both kinds of configuration within the Big Picture experience.
A controller is the clearest accessory for this use case, but Big Picture is not restricted to televisions. Valve explicitly notes that it can also run on a normal computer display, so a monitor-based setup can use the same full-screen interface.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Big Picture Mode for a couch or TV setup
Use Big Picture when your decision is about how Steam is operated. It is designed for a full-screen display, larger-distance readability and controller-first movement through Steam. This remains true whether you enable the art option or leave the standard home screen in place.

Use both when you want both outcomes
There is no need to pick one feature to the exclusion of the other. Big Picture supplies the interface and Big Art Mode changes its home-screen presentation. A TV user can enable both; a monitor user can do the same if the artwork-focused home screen is appealing.

“Big Art Mode is a replacement for Big Picture.”
It is not. Big Art Mode is listed as an option for the home screen inside Big Picture. It does not provide the complete navigation layer that makes Big Picture useful for controller operation.
“Big Picture requires Big Art Mode.”
It does not. Big Picture is the established feature; the art option is optional. You can use the full-screen interface with the ordinary home-screen presentation.

“Big Art Mode changes how every Steam screen looks.”
The documented scope is the home screen. Other library, settings and game-management views remain part of Big Picture’s broader interface and are not described as being replaced by Big Art Mode.

- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
“The art slideshow and bouncing logo are Big Art Mode.”
Valve’s announcement treats those as separate screensaver choices. They should be configured and understood independently from the Big Art Mode home-screen setting.
“If I cannot find the setting, my Steam installation is broken.”
Not necessarily. The September 9, 2026 announcement documents Big Art Mode in Steam Client Beta. It does not establish a universal stable-client rollout across every desktop platform. Missing controls may therefore reflect the client channel or platform rather than a local fault.
Availability and the beta caveat
Big Picture’s status is clear in Valve’s support material: it is a Steam mode intended for TV and game-controller use and also available on a normal computer display. Big Art Mode has a narrower evidence base. The cited announcement is a Steam Client Beta note dated September 9, 2026, and it identifies the Settings > Home location.
Recommended Free Tools
That announcement confirms beta availability, not guaranteed stable availability everywhere. Before relying on the setting for a shared computer or a living-room installation, check the current Steam release notes and the client’s update channel. The option may arrive at different times on different desktop platforms, and a stable build may not expose a beta-only control.
A practical decision checklist
- Need controller-first navigation? Use Big Picture Mode.
- Need a full-screen layout readable from a TV? Use Big Picture Mode.
- Want game artwork to dominate the home screen? Enable Big Art Mode within Big Picture.
- Want a game-art slideshow or bouncing-logo screensaver? Look for the separate screensaver choices, not the Big Art Mode switch.
- Cannot see Big Art Mode in Settings > Home? Verify whether the client is using a build and platform that include the beta feature.
- Playing on a normal monitor? Big Picture is still available; its purpose is not limited to televisions.
The bottom line on the difference
Big Picture Mode is Steam’s full-screen, controller-oriented operating environment. Big Art Mode is an optional visual treatment for the Big Picture home screen. Choose Big Picture for the way you navigate Steam; add Big Art Mode only if you want the home screen to foreground game artwork. Because the documented Big Art feature is from Steam Client Beta, confirm its current rollout before expecting to find it in every stable desktop installation.
