Steam Beta Update (October 16, 2026) Fixes Vulkan Alt-Tab Hangs and NCAA Football 27 Input

Valve’s October 16, 2026 Steam Client Beta update continues work on startup performance and fixes several specific problems: Vulkan games hanging after Alt-Tab in Desktop Mode, some native non-Steam games failing to launch, and Steam Input configurations not applying when NCAA Football 27 starts. It is a Preview/Beta-channel release, not a confirmation that every stable Steam installation has received these changes.

What Valve changed in the October 16 beta

Valve describes this build as a “Second round of Steam startup performance improvements following shipping of prior improvements in public client.” The notes do not include a universal percentage, measured launch time or other benchmark, so the defensible conclusion is that startup work is continuing—not that Steam now launches a specific amount faster.

The release was shipped to the Preview/Beta channel on October 16, 2026. Users on the normal public client should not assume that the same build is installed on their system.

Vulkan games no longer hang after Alt-Tab in Desktop Mode

The clearest Linux-facing fix is “Fixed Vulkan games hanging after alt-tab.” The problem affected games running in Desktop Mode when the player switched away from the game and then returned. The note identifies the affected graphics API and situation, but does not claim that every Vulkan hang or every Linux graphics problem is resolved.

Some native non-Steam launch failures are fixed

The beta corrects a bug that prevented some native non-Steam games from launching. This applies to a subset of launch failures rather than serving as a blanket compatibility guarantee for every title added through Steam’s non-Steam-game feature.

NCAA Football 27 receives its Steam Input configuration at startup

Steam Input now applies the game’s configuration when NCAA Football 27 starts. Previously, the configuration could be missed during startup, leaving controls in the wrong state until the game was restarted or the input settings were otherwise refreshed.

Additional client and interface fixes

  • Some incorrect Steam Service Error dialogs appearing after rapidly quitting and restarting Steam were corrected.
  • A friends-date display problem affecting British Columbia was fixed.
  • Steam now displays the installability status for Steam Frame native-only content correctly on Windows.
  • The voice-chat volume-slider layout was corrected.
  • Friends’ output-volume settings now persist between sessions instead of being lost.

What the beta channel means for users

Steam’s beta archive describes the beta group as the place for the latest client updates and asks participants to test them and provide feedback. That gives users earlier access to fixes, but it also means the build is being validated in a broader range of hardware, operating-system and game configurations before wider release.

To try the update, select Steam’s Preview/Beta client channel in the client’s beta-participation settings, then allow Steam to restart and install the offered build. The exact wording of the setting can change between client revisions. If reliability matters more than early access, remain on the public channel and wait for a stable release containing the fixes.

Stable client versus October 16 beta

Area October 16 Preview/Beta Public stable client
Access to the new fixes Available to users who opt into the Preview/Beta channel Not established by these release notes
Startup responsiveness Second round of startup-performance work; no universal benchmark published Earlier improvements had already shipped in the public client
Vulkan after Alt-Tab Fix for games hanging after Alt-Tab in Desktop Mode Whether this exact fix is present is not stated
Native non-Steam launches Fixes some failures to launch Whether this exact fix is present is not stated
NCAA Football 27 Steam Input Configuration applies at startup Whether this exact fix is present is not stated

How this fits the wider Steam maintenance cycle

The October 16 beta followed October 15 beta notes that described moving the Linux client to 64-bit and introducing a Steam Runtime container intended to provide a more consistent experience across distributions. Steam’s official news stream also listed an October 13 stable-client update with Vulkan overlay and swapchain crash fixes. Together, those entries show an active sequence of client and SteamOS maintenance, but they do not establish a single release date for all fixes across every platform.

What to check after installing the beta

  1. Confirm that Steam reports the Preview/Beta channel after the client restarts.
  2. On Desktop Mode, reproduce the Alt-Tab workflow in a Vulkan game that previously hung and check whether returning to the game remains responsive.
  3. Launch any affected native non-Steam game from the same shortcut that previously failed.
  4. Start NCAA Football 27 and verify that the intended Steam Input layout is active immediately at game launch.
  5. Check friends’ output-volume settings after quitting and reopening Steam if that persistence issue affected you.

If a problem remains, record the game, operating system, graphics API, whether the client is in Desktop Mode, and the exact steps that trigger it. A beta build is specifically intended for this kind of feedback, and a successful result in one title does not prove that all related bugs are fixed.
