A second group is often deliberate: Steam’s Achievement Sets can separate a base game from its downloadable content (DLC), while archived sets can remain visible only to players who earned them. Refreshing Steam can resolve a stale display, but it cannot be assumed to repair account-side records.
What “missing” or “duplicate” achievement sets usually means
There are several different failures that look alike on Steam. A title can be absent from your Library because you are signed into another account or because a filter hides it. The game can be present for you but hidden from other people because it is marked private. The achievement page can show an additional group because the developer configured separate base-game and DLC sets. Finally, a client or cloud synchronization problem can leave the display temporarily out of date.

Steamworks documents that a player’s achievement and statistics data is associated with the Steam account and displayed through the Steam Community profile. That means a local reinstall or a new hard drive is not, by itself, a reliable way to reconstruct missing account records. 1. Confirm the account and remove Library filters
- Open Steam and check the account name and avatar in the top-right corner. If you use Family Sharing, a second account, or multiple Windows users, sign out and back in to the account that purchased or activated the game.
- Open Library and clear search text, collection-only views, and installed-only or favorites filters. Set the Library view to show all games, then search for the exact title.
- Open the title’s store or Community page and compare the account shown there with the account currently signed in.
Steam Support lists wrong-account and filter settings among the common reasons a game appears to be missing. Its guidance is available at Games Are Missing from my Library. Do not troubleshoot achievements until the correct title is visible in the correct account.

2. Check whether the game is private
In the Steam client, open the game’s management menu from the Library (right-click the title or use its gear icon) and review the privacy option. Also open your profile, choose Edit Profile, then Privacy Settings, and make sure game details can be viewed by the audience you intend. Steam’s labels can change slightly between client releases, so look for wording that says the game is private or that game details are hidden.
A private game is not the same as a game hidden from the Library. Marking a title private hides its ownership, activity, and achievement showcases from other users; the owner can still see and launch it. Hiding a game in the Library is a separate, local organization feature and does not change the account’s public privacy state. Steam explains the visibility behavior in Steam Private Games.
After changing a privacy setting, view the profile while signed in, then ask a friend or use a permitted second account to check the public view. A private title can therefore look “missing” to someone else even when its achievements are intact for the owner.
3. Refresh Steam and inspect both achievement pages
- Exit Steam completely using Steam > Exit; closing only the window can leave the client running in the notification area.
- Wait a few seconds, relaunch Steam, and sign in again if prompted.
- From Library, open the game’s achievement page. Then open the same title through the Steam Community profile and compare the groups, unlocked counts, and progress percentages.
This test separates a stale client display from a discrepancy that appears in the account’s Community view as well. It is a refresh, not a promise of data repair: Steamworks describes where achievement data is displayed, but restarting the client does not guarantee that a server-side record will be rewritten.

4. Determine whether the second group is an intentional Achievement Set
Valve’s Achievement Sets feature lets a developer divide achievements into distinct sets. A common design is one set for the base game and another for a DLC release. Each set can have its own progress percentage and trophy count, so two groups with similar names are not necessarily duplicate unlock records.

Compare the achievement names, total counts, and descriptions rather than judging by the group titles alone. Check the game’s DLC section in the Library or store page and note which add-ons the account owns. If the two groups contain different achievements and each percentage changes independently, that behavior is consistent with Achievement Sets. Valve describes this model in its Steam Achievement Sets announcement.
5. Check the application identity and synchronization state
Steam identifies each game and DLC configuration with an application ID (app ID). Record the title’s app ID from the game’s Community or store URL, or from the game’s properties when that identifier is exposed. Also record the installed DLC, whether you are using a beta branch, and whether the title is visible in the Community page.

Open the game’s Properties and inspect the General page for its Steam Cloud status, then watch for a pending or failed synchronization message when starting or closing the game. A cloud error can explain why local game data is out of date, but cloud files are not a substitute for the Steam account’s achievement record. Steam warns that lost cloud data may not be recoverable in its Steam Cloud support article.

Do not repeatedly delete local saves or force a cloud overwrite while investigating. If Steam offers a choice between local and cloud copies, preserve the copy that contains the newest known progress and capture screenshots before selecting an option.
6. Escalate with evidence when the discrepancy persists
Contact Steam Support when the correct account, privacy settings, set structure, and synchronization state have been checked but the signed-in client and Community profile still disagree. Include:
- The exact game title and app ID.
- Proof that the account owns the base game and relevant DLC, such as the Library entry or purchase history with sensitive payment details obscured.
- A screenshot of every achievement group, including its name, total, and progress.
- The date and approximate time the discrepancy began.
- Whether the problem appears only to other users, only in the client, only in the Community profile, or in all three views.
- Any Steam Cloud warning, failed synchronization message, branch name, or recent DLC installation.
This information lets support distinguish a privacy presentation issue from an Achievement Sets configuration or account-data problem. Link the case to the relevant Steam Support guidance for private games, Steam Cloud, and missing Library games so the initial report contains the same context those checks require.

How to tell a display problem from missing account data
Only other people cannot see the achievements
This pattern points first to privacy. The owner’s signed-in achievement page may be normal while another profile sees no game, no activity, or no achievement showcase. Review the private-game flag and profile game-details visibility before changing files or reinstalling anything.

The game is absent everywhere in the Library
Use the account and filter checks in step 1. An uninstalled game should still appear in an unfiltered Library when the account owns it; an account mismatch or a view restricted to installed titles can make it seem deleted.
Both groups contain different achievements
Different achievement names, totals, and independent percentages strongly suggest separate sets, especially when one corresponds to owned DLC. An archived set can also remain for players who earned an achievement even if it is no longer shown as an active set to everyone.
The same unlock appears twice or counts change after a sync error
Capture the app ID, screenshots, and synchronization status before taking corrective action. Steam’s account association and cloud synchronization are separate systems, so deleting local files cannot be treated as a guaranteed fix for duplicate or missing account records.
What not to promise yourself
- Reinstalling Steam or the game may refresh a client, but it does not guarantee restoration of an account-side achievement record.
- Deleting saves, clearing folders, or forcing a different cloud copy can destroy the only local copy of progress. Steam cautions that lost cloud data may not be recoverable.
- Adding storage, replacing a controller, or changing PC hardware does not alter privacy settings, Achievement Sets, app identity, or Steam account statistics.
- A second group is not proof of cheating or corruption until its contents, DLC relationship, and archived status have been checked.
Questions players commonly ask
Can I hide a game from my Library without making it private?
Yes. Library hiding is a local organization choice, while marking a game private controls what other users can see about ownership, activity, and achievement showcases. Check both controls independently when diagnosing visibility.
Why does a DLC group have a different completion percentage?
Achievement Sets give each set its own progress calculation. A DLC group therefore measures only the achievements assigned to that DLC set, not the base game’s total.
Why can another player see an archived set that I cannot?
Valve’s Achievement Sets design allows archived achievements and sets to remain visible to users who earned them while disappearing for users who never did. Visibility can therefore differ between two accounts without either account being damaged.
What should I send support if the profile is still wrong?
Send the title, app ID, ownership and DLC evidence, screenshots of each group, the affected view, and any cloud or branch error. State whether the discrepancy occurs in the signed-in client, the Community profile, or only for other viewers.
