Short answer: you can make an automated browser behave like a specified device for legitimate QA, compatibility testing, and authorized measurement, but you cannot reliably make it invisible. Detection can combine network behavior, HTTP headers, browser-exposed values, and inconsistencies over time. In a 2026 study of six LLM web agents on protected honeysites, the agents remained distinguishable across those layers, and some “stealth” changes increased detectability in that test.
The safe engineering goal is therefore controlled, reproducible emulation—not bypassing another site’s anti-bot controls. Record what the target returns, including challenges and blocks, and obtain permission before testing.
What “stealth” actually means
Browser automation stealth techniques are usually changes intended to reduce obvious differences between an automated session and a selected browser or device profile. They may set a user agent, viewport, locale, timezone, touch capability, color scheme, permissions, or other values exposed to a page. Playwright officially supports many of those settings for emulation.
That capability is useful when the question is, for example, “Does our checkout render correctly on an iPhone-sized viewport in French?” It is not proof that a script has become an ordinary person’s browser. A website controls its own detection logic, and different sites collect different signals.

A layered model of detection
Think in layers rather than looking for one magic “bot flag.” The following model synthesizes current measurement studies; it is not a universal taxonomy for every anti-bot product.

The 2026 web-measurement study found both header effects and JavaScript environment probing across 10,000 websites. A separate 2026 study evaluated six LLM-based agents on protected honeysites and found them distinguishable across network, HTTP, and browser layers. Those results show why a single “stealth” patch cannot establish invisibility.
What the recent measurements show
Soft blocks vary by browser configuration
“Detecting Bot Detection: Prevalence, Techniques, and Implications for Web Measurement Research” measured four browser configurations in 40,000 visits to 10,000 websites. The authors reported a 15% soft-block rate for Chromium headless, compared with 7% for the other tested configurations. They also attributed 82% of observed blocks to bot detection: 59% were vendor-confirmed and 23% were inferred from condition-dependent blocking. These are results for that sample, definitions, and time period—not a forecast for every website.
Header changes are not the whole story
In the study’s header-spoofing experiment, 75% of Chromium-headless-only blocks were attributed to header-level signals alone. That finding demonstrates that headers can matter, but it does not mean that supplying a different User-Agent will make automation acceptable. Browser and network evidence may still disagree.

The 2024 “FP-Inconsistent” study sent half a million requests from 20 bot services to a honeysite and two anti-bot services. It reported average evasion rates of 52.93% against DataDome and 44.56% against BotD. Those figures describe that experiment’s services, traffic, and rules; they are not a general success rate for stealth packages or managed browsers.
No independent figure establishes the typical effectiveness of commercial stealth products. Treat provider documentation as a description of claimed capabilities, not as comparative proof.
Use Playwright emulation for a defined test question
Playwright’s supported emulation settings include user agent, screen and viewport, touch, geolocation, locale, timezone, permissions, and color scheme. Its predefined device profiles assume a platform, so regard them as controlled configurations rather than perfect replicas of every physical device.

Control the data
Playwright’s best-practices guidance says, “Make sure that you control the data.” Use seeded or fixed accounts, deterministic fixtures, and isolated browser contexts. Do not let a prior test’s cookies, local storage, or service-worker cache silently change the next result.
Pin the rendering stack
For visual regression, keep the operating-system and browser versions the same. Record fonts, viewport, device scale factor, locale, timezone, color scheme, and reduced-motion settings. A changed font or browser revision can create a screenshot difference unrelated to your application.

Prefer an explicit readiness signal—such as a known selector or application event—to an arbitrary sleep. Also record failed requests, redirects, console errors, and the final URL. A screenshot taken before a lazy component loads is a timing failure, not evidence about detection.
Keep the test state isolated
Create a new context per test or scenario, clear data between runs, and avoid reusing an authenticated profile unless that reuse is the behavior under test. Run a small number of authorized requests and respect the site’s published limits.

What not to infer from a block
- A challenge or soft block does not prove that one particular browser property caused it.
- A successful page load does not prove that the session is “undetected.” The site may simply have allowed that request.
- A changed User-Agent, a hidden property, or a stealth package does not establish reliable acceptance.
- Randomly rotating fingerprint fields can create the inconsistencies that detection systems look for.
Record the response as an outcome of the measurement. If a production site blocks your compatibility test, move the test to a staging or allow-listed environment, ask the owner for an approved route, or reduce the scope. Do not turn the test into an attempt to defeat the control.

The page returns a challenge or soft block
Confirm that the target owner has authorized the test. Save the status, headers, final URL, and timestamp, then repeat in an allow-listed or staging environment. Do not respond by adding random fingerprint changes.
Results differ between runs
Check browser and OS versions, fonts, timezone, locale, permissions, test data, cookies, service workers, and network conditions. Use a fresh context and explicit readiness checks.

Visual screenshots are flaky
Wait for the application’s ready selector, disable animations in your test build, ensure fonts have loaded, and keep the rendering stack pinned. Compare a small diagnostic screenshot before a full-page capture.
Geolocation or permissions do not apply
Set geolocation and the matching permission on the same context, verify the page’s origin, and log the browser console. A permission granted to one context does not automatically carry to another.
Requests time out
Capture network failures and redirects, verify DNS and TLS from the runner, and distinguish a slow application from a blocked request. Increase a timeout only after identifying the slow condition; otherwise you can hide a reproducibility problem.
FAQ
Can Playwright run without being detected?
No reliable guarantee exists. Playwright can emulate documented device and browser settings, while sites may combine network, HTTP, browser, and historical signals.
Should I use a stealth plugin for a compatibility test?
Only if the test owner has approved it and you are evaluating that product itself. For ordinary QA, a documented Playwright configuration is easier to reproduce and interpret.
Are managed stealth services independently verified?
