Stay Signed In to Google: Fix Repeated Sign-Outs and Choose Safer Device Settings

On a trusted personal device, Google says you stay signed in to your account until you sign out. If that session keeps ending, check that cookies are allowed, make sure browser software is not deleting them, and update the browser. Use private browsing instead on a borrowed or public device, then close every private window when you finish.

Why Google usually keeps you signed in

A Google Account web session is normally designed to persist until you sign out. Google Account Help puts it simply: “When you sign in to your Google Account, you’ll stay signed in until you sign out.” Websites use cookies to remember a session, so blocked or frequently deleted cookies can lead to repeated sign-ins. Google Account Help: Stay signed in or out of your Google Account explains the expected behavior and basic troubleshooting.

Fix repeated sign-outs on your own device

Work through these checks before deleting site data. The settings path below is for Chrome on a computer; other browsers have their own cookie controls and instructions.

  1. Check the account and browsing mode. Confirm you are signing into the intended Google Account. If you opened a private or incognito window, its session is temporary; close it and sign in through a regular browser window on your own device.
  2. Allow cookies. In Chrome on a computer, open Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies and review the cookie controls. Google notes that cookie behavior can affect Google Accounts and third-party apps. For other browsers, use that browser’s current cookie settings. See Google’s cookie guidance.
  3. Check whether software removes cookies. Antivirus or related privacy software may be configured to delete cookies. Review its cleanup or browsing-data settings if cookies keep disappearing after you close the browser. Google lists this as a possible cause of repeated sign-outs: Google Account Help.
  4. Update the browser. Install the latest version available for your browser, then sign in again and see whether the session persists. Google includes updating the browser in its troubleshooting guidance.
  5. Clear the browser cache if cookies are enabled and the problem continues. Clearing cached data can help with browser issues, but deleting cookies may sign you out of websites and remove saved site preferences, so you may need to sign in again. Google’s Chrome guidance describes clearing browsing data and notes that Chrome sync may require you to remain signed in to the Google Account being synced to delete data across devices: Clear browsing data in Chrome.
  6. If you use two-step verification, consider adding a trusted computer. Google documents this as an option for reducing repeated verification prompts. It is one troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that all sign-out problems will stop. Details are in Google Account Help.

Google website sign-in is not the same as signing in to Chrome

Signing into Gmail or another Google service may prompt Chrome to ask whether you also want to sign into the browser. That is an optional Chrome profile choice; it is separate from allowing cookies for Google websites. In Chrome’s Google Services Settings, the available choices include Sign in, Don’t sign in, and Ask every time. Choose the option that suits how you want Chrome to handle browser-profile sign-in. See Google Chrome Help on signing in to Chrome.

Use private browsing on a borrowed or public device

Do not make a public computer or someone else’s device your persistent sign-in device. Google recommends private browsing for temporary use on a device that is not yours. Open a private window, sign in to the Google service there, and close every private window when you finish; Google says the private-window cookies are deleted once all private windows are closed. If private browsing is unavailable, Google advises clearing cache and cookies both before and after using the device. Follow Google’s guidance for signing in on a device that is not yours.

Sign out of a device you no longer have

If your account remains signed in on a device you cannot access, use Google Account device controls to review devices and sign out remotely. If you saved your password on someone else’s device, Google advises changing the password and making sure that device is signed out. Start with Google’s device sign-out guidance.

Switch accounts if the wrong Google Account keeps appearing

You can be signed in to multiple Google Accounts at once and switch from the profile menu. Account settings are generally separate, but some defaults may follow the account Google treats as the default when it cannot tell which account you intend. Check the profile menu before changing settings or assuming that a session has ended. See Google Account Help on signing in to multiple accounts.
