Starting Goalie vs. Backup: How to Choose the Right Goalie for Fantasy Hockey

Start the goalie most likely to play only after checking what your league rewards. In standard category leagues, more starts can create more chances for wins and shutouts, but also expose your goals-against average (GAA) and save percentage (SV%). A backup can be the better choice when a tandem, injury, rest plan or favorable assignment gives that goalie a credible path to a start. Recheck the latest lineup information near lock.

What should decide a goalie start?

Use your league’s scoring first, then estimate each goalie’s chance of playing and the likely value and risk of that appearance. NHL.com lists wins, GAA, SV% and shutouts as standard goalie categories; points leagues can assign different values, so use the settings in your own league rather than assuming a platform’s scoring applies everywhere. NHL.com’s 2026–27 goalie rankings also describe goalie valuation as dependent on team situation, anticipated starts, projected goal support, injury concerns, past production, regression and upside.

That makes “starter” and “backup” useful labels, not a complete start/sit decision. Compare the goalies’ expected starts over the period you’re managing, team and opponent context, rest, current role and the categories you need. NHL.com’s fantasy hockey glossary advises balancing start volume with efficiency in standard-category leagues.

When is the starter the better choice?

A goalie with a stable starting role is generally the stronger volume play when you need opportunities to earn wins, collect saves or record a shutout. But each additional appearance also creates another chance for a poor outing to pull down GAA or SV%. Consider that trade-off against your matchup: pursuing volume can make sense when you need counting categories, while protecting ratios can call for more selectivity.

In a weekly head-to-head league, consider which goalie categories you can realistically gain or protect during that scoring period. A high-volume option is not automatically helpful if a weak performance could jeopardize a ratio category you are trying to hold.

When can a backup be the better play?

Choose a backup when there is a credible reason to expect that goalie to play and the likely assignment compares favorably with your alternative. Common reasons include a genuine tandem, an injury to the starter, a planned rest day or a more attractive opponent or rest situation. A backup without a likely start may contribute nothing, so weigh the probability of playing rather than treating the label itself as evidence of opportunity.

In a tandem, the backup may receive a meaningful share of starts rather than only occasional relief work. NHL.com’s glossary discusses owning a backup as insurance if a starter is injured or a competition turns into a time-share; owning both goalies can also help capture starts when appearance limits apply. Check your league’s roster and appearance rules before using that approach.

How should you treat back-to-backs?

A team playing on consecutive nights may split the games between its goalies, but the schedule alone does not tell you which goalie will start each one. In a January 5, 2022 Seattle Kraken article, Alison Lukan quoted then-head coach Dave Hakstol saying, “Typically you’re going to have a split on the back-to-backs.” The article also noted that the order can depend on the opponent and rest. That is useful workload context, not confirmation of a particular current matchup. Read Lukan’s discussion of goalie workload.

The same article summarized Eric Tulsky’s 2013 estimate that a goalie playing both nights of a back-to-back could see a save-percentage reduction of “just over 11 percent.” It also reported that later work by SportsMEDIA Technology’s Andrew Thomas and The Athletic’s Dom Luszczyszyn found the effect may be less significant. Treat the original figure as a historical estimate with a stated qualification, not a universal prediction for a goalie’s next start.

How to make the start/sit call

  1. Check your league settings. Review goalie categories or points values, plus minimum or maximum appearance rules. Do not assume another league or platform uses the same scoring.
  2. Set the decision window. Establish whether you are choosing for one day or a full scoring week, then count how many games each goalie’s team has in that span.
  3. Estimate who will actually start. Check each goalie’s current role, recent usage, injury news and the latest projection. A back-to-back makes a split plausible; it does not confirm the order.
  4. Compare the likely assignments. Consider opponent, rest and team context, including projected goal support. Treat a projection as a projection, not a confirmed start.
  5. Match risk to your matchup. If you need wins or saves, you may accept more workload risk; if you need to protect GAA or SV%, a selective start may fit better. Use the scoring values and categories in your league.
  6. Recheck near lineup lock. NHL.com’s fantasy hockey page links to daily projected lineups and starting-goalie information. Use the latest available assignment before setting your lineup.

What to do when the start is uncertain

If you cannot establish that a backup is likely to play, treat the projected start as uncertain rather than promoting that goalie based on a tandem rumor or the team’s schedule alone. If the starter’s assignment is also unconfirmed, decide whether the upside of a possible appearance is worth the risk of receiving little or no contribution in your format. The safer option depends on your scoring, matchup and roster alternatives.
