It restores a Windows 7-style desktop menu, can pin Modern applications, and can boot directly to the desktop. It remains listed and downloadable from Stardock, but it is not the appropriate Stardock product for Windows 10 or Windows 11; Stardock directs those users to Start11.
What is Start8?
Start8 is third-party Windows shell customization software from Stardock. It was created for Windows 8, whose default experience emphasized a full-screen tiled Start screen instead of the conventional desktop Start menu.
Start8 is optional, not a Microsoft component and not required to use Windows 8. Its purpose is to give people who prefer the Windows 7-era desktop workflow a more familiar launcher and set of shell controls.
As of August 16, 2026, Stardock still maintains a Start8 product page and an official download and purchase page. Those pages establish that the product is listed and available, but they do not establish a current Start8 feature-update schedule.

What features does Start8 include?
Stardock currently lists these capabilities:
- A Windows 7-style Start menu for Windows 8.
- Pinning Modern applications to the Start menu.
- An option to boot directly to the Windows 8 desktop.
- Multiple visual styles, including Windows 7-inspired and more modern layouts.
- Different Windows 8 menu sizes and styles, including “Small” and “Wide” options.
- Appearance controls, shortcuts, hotkeys, search and configuration settings.
These are listed product features, not a guarantee that every function behaves identically on every Windows 8 update, driver combination or hardware setup. Test the specific installation before depending on it.
Start8 system requirements
Stardock’s current pages distinguish the general product from its business offering:
| Edition or listing | Operating-system requirement shown by Stardock | Other stated details |
|---|---|---|
| General Start8 product | Windows 8; Windows Server 2012/R2 | 30-day trial; listed languages include English, French, Italian, German and Spanish |
| Start8 for Business | Windows 8/8.1 | One year of support, single-key activation, Group Policy support and volume discounts |
Neither listing names Windows 10 or Windows 11 as a Start8 requirement. Windows 8.1 appears in the business listing, while the general requirement is stated as Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012/R2; preserve that distinction when assessing an older machine.

Does Start8 work on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Do not assume official support. Stardock’s Start8 pages list Windows 8-era systems and explicitly direct Windows 10 and Windows 11 users to Start11. An installer that happens to launch on a newer system is not proof of supported compatibility.
Start-menu replacements integrate with the Windows shell. Major operating-system updates can alter Start-button, taskbar, search, security and installation behavior. On an unsupported version, Start8 might install yet fail partially, behave inconsistently or complicate removal.
If your computer runs Windows 10 or 11, choose Start11 or the built-in Start menu instead of presenting Start8 as a modern solution.

How to download and install Start8 safely
- Open Stardock’s official Start8 product page or download page.
- Select the official trial or download option. The listed trial lasts 30 days; Start8 is not presented as permanently free.
- Confirm that the target machine is running a listed Windows 8-era operating system.
- Create a restore point or current system backup before changing the shell on an important computer.
- Install from Stardock, then test the Start menu, desktop-boot setting, search, Modern-app shortcuts and uninstall process.
- For an existing license, use Stardock’s official account area at store.stardock.com/myaccount/products rather than an unofficial mirror.
Avoid cracked installers, repacked downloads and serial-key sites. Do not copy a historical purchase price from an old review: the accessible current product content does not provide a dependable numeric price, so check Stardock’s live purchase flow.
Start8 versus Start11
| Start8 | Start11 | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary systems | Windows 8; Windows Server 2012/R2 listed | Windows 10 and Windows 11, including ARM support listed by Stardock |
| Main role | Traditional Start menu and desktop workflow for Windows 8 | Current Stardock Start-menu and taskbar customization for modern Windows |
| Customization | Windows 7-style and modern menu styles, pinning, search, shortcuts and desktop boot | Windows 7-, Windows 10-style, modern and full-screen layouts; taskbar, search, folder-menu and context-menu controls |
| Licensing information shown | Paid product with a 30-day trial; current numeric price not reliably stated on the reviewed page | Annual, permanent-license and Object Desktop options are shown on Stardock’s product page |
| Business use | Group Policy, single-key activation, volume discounts and one year of support in the business listing | Broader deployment, standardized layouts, kiosk-style controls, scripting and branding features listed |
Start11’s page also lists pinning files and folders to the taskbar, folder menus, taskbar positioning, search customization and integration with Everything, plus options to reduce unwanted Start-menu content. Those capabilities make it the relevant Stardock path for current Windows, not an upgrade in operating-system support for Start8 itself.

Can Start8 owners upgrade?
Stardock’s Start11 v2 upgrade FAQ says users who activated Start8, Start10 or Start11 version 1 may qualify for Start11 v2 upgrade pricing. Eligibility depends on the prior product being activated under the Stardock account used to check.

Start8 for Business
The business listing is mainly relevant to organizations preserving Windows 8 or 8.1 deployments. It lists one year of support, single-key activation, Group Policy support and volume discounts. Those terms should not be generalized to the consumer product, whose page lists a 30-day trial and does not establish the same support period.
For newer managed deployments, Stardock positions Start11 as the product with broader Windows 10/11 management and deployment controls.

Troubleshooting and edge cases
Windows 8 in a virtual machine
Before relying on Start8, test Start-button response, keyboard shortcuts, display scaling, Remote Desktop, full-screen and multi-monitor layouts, and startup after suspend or resume.
The installer appears to work on Windows 10 or 11
Treat that as an unsupported experiment, not a compatibility endorsement. Check taskbar integration, search, updates and uninstall behavior before deciding whether to keep it.
The shell becomes unstable
- Use Start8’s own configuration or uninstall option if it remains accessible.
- Reboot.
- Uninstall Start8 through Windows’ installed-programs control panel.
- Reboot again.
- If instability remains, use System Restore or restore a system image.
- Contact Stardock support; do not download replacement DLLs or registry fixes from untrusted sites.
You own Start8 but lost the installer
Sign in to your Stardock account and use the official product-download area. Unofficial mirrors and key generators are not a safe recovery path.
Alternatives by need
- Windows 10/11: Start11 is Stardock’s current product.
- No third-party software: Use the built-in Windows Start menu.
- No-cost licensing: Investigate open-source or freeware replacements, checking current Windows support, update history, privacy, signing and uninstall reliability for each project.
- Only fast program search: Use a lightweight application launcher rather than replacing the entire Start menu and taskbar.
Verdict
Use or trial Start8 only when you are maintaining a Windows 8-era system and specifically want its traditional Start-menu workflow. It is still listed by Stardock and has a 30-day trial, but current pages do not establish active development or support for modern Windows. For Windows 10 or Windows 11, use Start11, the built-in menu or another currently supported alternative.
