Falcon 9 is SpaceX’s proven, partially reusable workhorse; Starship is a much larger system designed to make both stages reusable. Falcon 9 has flown hundreds of successful orbital missions and routinely recovers its first stage and payload fairings, while its second stage is expended. Starship’s architecture targets full, rapid reuse and far greater payload capacity, but its published figures remain design or expected capabilities rather than established routine service results.
The practical difference is therefore not simply “old rocket versus new rocket.” Falcon 9 offers demonstrated launch operations with published mission-specific payload figures. Starship promises a substantially larger lift capability and potentially lower marginal operating cost, but comparable customer prices and routine Starship economics have not been publicly established.

What Falcon 9 and Starship actually are
Falcon 9: a two-stage orbital launcher
Falcon 9 is a reusable, two-stage rocket. Its first stage uses nine Merlin engines burning liquid oxygen (LOX) and rocket-grade kerosene (RP-1). The second stage uses one Merlin Vacuum engine. SpaceX recovers first-stage boosters for refurbishment and reuse, and it continues to recover the two payload-fairing halves. The second stage is not designed to return to Earth.
SpaceX lists Falcon 9 at 70 meters tall, 3.7 meters in diameter and 549,054 kilograms in mass on its vehicle page: Falcon 9 specifications. Those dimensions describe the launch vehicle, not a universal payload configuration. Propellant load, trajectory, recovery method and mission destination all affect what a particular flight can carry.

Starship: a two-part, fully reusable transport system
Starship is the name of the upper spacecraft, while Super Heavy is the first-stage booster. Together they form the system SpaceX describes as a fully reusable transport vehicle for crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and destinations beyond.
The system uses Raptor engines, which SpaceX describes as reusable methane-oxygen staged-combustion engines. SpaceX says Raptor has twice the thrust of a Falcon 9 Merlin engine. These are company descriptions, not an independent engine comparison. Starship’s architecture is intended to recover both Super Heavy and the Starship spacecraft, unlike Falcon 9, whose second stage is expended.
SpaceX’s June 2026 offering materials label Starship’s reusability “Full & Rapid Design.” That wording is important: it identifies the intended operating model, not proof that routine, airline-like turnaround has already been achieved.
| Characteristic | Falcon 9 | Starship/Super Heavy |
|---|---|---|
| Stages | Two stages | Super Heavy booster plus Starship spacecraft |
| Propellants | LOX/RP-1; Merlin engines | Methane and LOX; Raptor engines |
| Recovery design | First stage and fairing halves reused; second stage expended | Full-system reuse is the design objective |
| Published size data | 70 m tall; 3.7 m diameter; 549,054 kg mass | Comparable current vehicle dimensions were not stated in the cited materials |
| Operational status | Established orbital launch service | Developmental system with expected capabilities still subject to demonstration |
Payload: why the headline numbers are not a simple apples-to-apples comparison
SpaceX’s current Falcon 9 vehicle page lists maximum payload figures of 22,800 kilograms to low Earth orbit (LEO), 8,300 kilograms to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) and 4,020 kilograms to Mars. These are destination-specific figures and should not be treated as one universal payload rating. The actual payload available on a mission depends on trajectory, propellant margins, recovery mode, spacecraft separation requirements and other mission conditions.
SpaceX’s 2026 offering materials describe an expected Starship V3 capacity of 100 metric tons or more to LEO. This is an expected capacity under specified conditions, not a demonstrated routine-service result. It also is not directly equivalent to every Falcon 9 number: the Starship figure is for LEO and an expected V3 configuration, while Falcon 9’s published figures cover several destinations and represent the vehicle page’s stated capability.

| Vehicle and destination | Payload figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Falcon 9 to LEO | 22,800 kg | SpaceX-published vehicle-page figure; mission conditions and recovery mode can change the usable payload |
| Falcon 9 to GTO | 8,300 kg | SpaceX-published figure for a higher-energy destination than LEO |
| Falcon 9 to Mars | 4,020 kg | SpaceX-published figure for an interplanetary trajectory |
| Starship V3 to LEO | 100 metric tons or more | Expected capacity in SpaceX’s 2026 materials; configuration- and mission-dependent, not an achieved routine-service metric |
On the published LEO figures alone, the expected Starship V3 capacity is more than four times Falcon 9’s 22,800-kilogram figure. That ratio should not be read as a guaranteed flight result: the Starship number is an expectation, and payload performance changes with recovery requirements and mission profile. A Starship flight that reserves propellant for booster and spacecraft recovery can have a different payload outcome from an expendable or differently configured mission.
Reuse: what comes back, and what does not
Falcon 9 recovery sequence
Falcon 9’s first stage separates after supplying most of the launch vehicle’s initial thrust. It performs controlled maneuvers, re-enters the atmosphere and lands either on a drone ship or at a landing site, depending on the mission. The booster is then inspected, refurbished as needed and assigned to a later flight when its condition and mission requirements permit.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe payload fairing separates before reaching orbit. SpaceX has developed recovery and reuse of the fairing halves, reducing the need to manufacture a new pair for every launch. The upper stage continues the mission and places the payload on its required trajectory; it is not designed to return for another flight.
- Reusable: first-stage booster and payload-fairing halves.
- Expended: second stage.
- Economic implication: some high-value hardware is flown more than once, but each mission still requires an expendable upper stage and operational processing.
Starship’s intended full-system reuse
Starship is designed so that Super Heavy and the Starship spacecraft both return and fly again. In principle, that removes the expendable upper stage that Falcon 9 requires and could spread the cost of both large stages across many missions. The design also targets rapid turnaround, which matters because a vehicle that can be reused but needs long, intensive refurbishment may not achieve low operating cost.
SpaceX has reported a test milestone involving approximately five metric tons of cryogenic propellant transferred between tanks in space. The September 2026 reusability update presents this as a test achievement; it is not evidence that routine orbital refueling or regular commercial Starship service has already been established.

Full reuse creates demanding engineering requirements. The booster and spacecraft must survive ascent loads, engine operation, atmospheric entry and landing while retaining enough propellant for recovery. Thermal-protection systems, engines, tanks, flight software, ground equipment and inspection procedures all become part of the reuse equation. A reusable design can lower long-run cost only if the hardware’s refurbishment burden, launch cadence and failure rate support that outcome.

Falcon 9’s demonstrated record
SpaceX reported approximately 620 Falcon 9 orbital launches and a mission-success rate above 99% as of March 31, 2026, in its June 2026 prospectus. Those are company-reported figures with that date cutoff, not an independently audited lifetime statistic in the cited material.
This operating record gives Falcon 9 practical advantages for customers that need a known launch process: established production and processing workflows, flight-proven recovery operations, a large base of mission experience and a history from which reliability estimates can be developed. It does not mean every Falcon 9 mission has identical risk or payload performance; each launch still depends on its spacecraft, trajectory, weather and recovery plan.
Starship’s evidence is still capability-oriented
Starship’s public materials emphasize design goals, expected capacity and development milestones. The cited sources do not establish a comparable record of routine commercial orbital launches, a regular customer cadence or a verified operational cost per launch.
That distinction affects how to read claims about Starship. “Fully reusable,” “rapid reuse” and “100 metric tons or more to LEO” describe the intended system or expected performance in the 2026 materials. They should not be rewritten as proof that the complete vehicle is already recovering both stages, flying on a rapid schedule and carrying commercial payloads at that capacity.

Cost: customer price, marginal cost and cost per kilogram are different
Rocket-cost discussions often mix three measurements:
- Customer price: what a launch customer is charged for a specific mission, including integration, insurance, scheduling and mission-specific services.
- Marginal operating cost: the additional cost of conducting one more launch after accounting for hardware reuse and recurring operations.
- Cost per kilogram: a normalized ratio that depends on the mission’s price or cost basis and the payload actually delivered to a specified orbit.
A lower marginal cost does not automatically produce a lower published customer price. A large payload capacity can reduce cost per kilogram only when the vehicle carries enough payload and the comparison uses the same destination, recovery assumptions and accounting basis.
What SpaceX claims about Starship’s cost
On its Starship vehicle page, SpaceX states: “Starship is designed to deliver payloads farther and at a lower marginal cost per launch than our current Falcon vehicles.” This is a design claim. It is not a customer price, a quoted rate card, an independently verified cost model or a demonstrated routine Starship result: SpaceX Starship vehicle page.
The logic is straightforward. If both Super Heavy and Starship can be recovered, inspected and reflown efficiently, the system would not discard an upper stage after every mission. A larger payload capacity could also spread fixed launch operations over more kilograms. But those benefits depend on actual turnaround time, refurbishment effort, propellant consumption, launch-site throughput, reliability and the number of successful flights each vehicle achieves.
Falcon 9’s historical cost context
SpaceX’s SEC-filed 2026 materials refer to the first Falcon 9 version reducing launch cost to approximately $2,700 per kilogram, compared with a historical average of $18,500 per kilogram. These figures are historical context about Falcon 9’s first version. They are not a current Falcon 9 customer price, not an independent estimate and not a like-for-like Starship comparison: SEC-filed 2026 registration and prospectus materials.
Best Value
Because the cited public sources do not provide a directly comparable current customer price for Falcon 9 and a verified routine operating cost for Starship, it would be misleading to state an exact dollar saving or a current Starship cost per kilogram.
Which vehicle fits which mission?
Choose Falcon 9 when demonstrated service matters most
- Your payload fits Falcon 9’s mission-specific performance and the target orbit is covered by its established launch offering.
- You value a long operating record and a known first-stage and fairing-reuse process.
- Your schedule requires a currently established orbital launcher rather than a vehicle whose commercial capabilities are still being demonstrated.
- You need a mission profile for which Falcon 9’s published LEO, GTO or Mars figures can be evaluated with the launch provider’s mission analysis.
Starship becomes compelling if its design goals are demonstrated
- You need payload capacity beyond what a single Falcon 9 mission can practically deliver.
- Your architecture benefits from a large spacecraft or from launching many payloads together.
- You can plan around a developing system and accept that capacity, cadence, recovery and pricing may change as testing continues.
- Future missions require capabilities such as large-scale orbital logistics, lunar transport or eventual in-space propellant transfer.
The key decision is not simply “which rocket is bigger?” It is whether the mission needs Falcon 9’s demonstrated service today or can use Starship’s potentially greater capacity after the relevant performance and recovery milestones are verified.
How to compare a real launch proposal
When a provider gives you a mission-specific quotation, ask for the assumptions behind every number:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify the destination orbit. “To LEO” is not enough; inclination, altitude, injection accuracy and any phasing requirements affect performance.
- Confirm the recovery mode. A booster landing on a drone ship, a land-based landing or an expendable configuration can produce different payload margins.
- Separate payload from spacecraft hardware. Fairing adapters, dispensers and deployment systems may count toward the launch mass or be priced separately.
- Request the price basis. Ask whether the figure is a customer price, an internal marginal-cost estimate or a normalized cost-per-kilogram calculation.
- Check schedule and readiness. A design capacity is useful only if the vehicle, launch site, licensing and recovery operations are available for the required date.
- Review reliability evidence. Falcon 9 has a substantial company-reported flight record; Starship figures should be labeled according to the specific milestone actually demonstrated.
What must happen before Starship can be judged on cost
Starship’s cost case will become clearer when public evidence shows more than a reusable architecture on paper. The most informative milestones would be:
- Repeated recovery of both Super Heavy and Starship on representative missions.
- Inspection and refurbishment intervals that support a meaningful launch cadence.
- Consistent payload delivery to defined orbits, with recovery reserves stated.
- Demonstrated orbital propellant transfer and a repeatable method for refueling missions, rather than a single test milestone.
- Published or independently verifiable commercial pricing that can be compared with Falcon 9 on the same destination and service basis.
Until those data exist, the fair conclusion is conditional: Starship could offer a much lower marginal cost and a lower cost per kilogram if its full-reuse and high-cadence goals work in practice, while Falcon 9 remains the vehicle with the established operational record.
Bottom line
Falcon 9 is a partially reusable, operationally mature launcher that reuses its first stage and fairing halves while expending its second stage. It publishes 22,800 kilograms to LEO, 8,300 kilograms to GTO and 4,020 kilograms to Mars under SpaceX’s stated vehicle specifications. Starship combines a Super Heavy booster with a Starship spacecraft and is designed for full, rapid reuse; SpaceX’s 2026 materials list an expected Starship V3 LEO capacity of 100 metric tons or more.
Starship therefore offers the larger potential payload and the more ambitious reuse architecture. Falcon 9 offers the stronger demonstrated record. On cost, the evidence supports only a qualitative comparison: SpaceX says Starship is designed for lower marginal cost, but no directly comparable current customer price or proven routine Starship operating cost has been established in the cited public sources.
