Can you play Starsand Island with friends?
Yes, multiplayer is listed. Nintendo’s Switch 2 page is more specific: it describes online multiplayer for up to four players. Steam also lists multiplayer, and a Steam Community announcement for Version 1.0 described online multiplayer for up to four players on PC.

That announcement noted that PC updates might arrive ahead of console updates because console builds go through platform review. It describes the rollout context at the time of that announcement, not a guarantee about current update timing. The sources reviewed do not confirm cross-platform play, so players should not assume that friends on PC and Switch 2 can join the same session.
Does Starsand Island support a controller?
Steam lists full controller support and specifically names Xbox and DualSense controllers. That makes a compatible controller an optional way to play on PC; the listing does not say that any particular controller is required.
