Is Starlink available in India? As of 13 October 2026, the evidence cited here confirms that Starlink, Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications have Indian GMPCS authorizations, but it does not establish that any of them is accepting household orders. Current reporting dated 2 October 2026 says spectrum and final clearances were still needed before the three could offer service to customers. An authorization is not the same as a live consumer plan.
For now, compare satellite internet with the fixed-line and mobile options actually available at your address, and do not buy a terminal based on an assumed launch, price or compatibility. The first question is not which satellite provider sounds best: it is whether a provider will accept an order for your exact location today.

Starlink vs. OneWeb in India: what is confirmed?
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) lists Starlink, Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications as holders of Unified License authorizations for Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite (GMPCS). The DoT list is dated 10 June 2025, and a Ministry of Communications parliamentary reply posted on 29 January 2026 confirms the authorizations. Neither source establishes a household service launch or an open consumer order channel.
| Provider | What the cited official record confirms | What a household buyer can conclude |
|---|---|---|
| Starlink | Listed among GMPCS-authorized licensees by the DoT as of 10 June 2025; authorization confirmed in the January 2026 parliamentary reply. | Authorization is confirmed, but the cited sources do not establish consumer ordering. Reporting dated 2 October 2026 says spectrum and final clearances remained prerequisites to customer service. |
| Eutelsat OneWeb | Listed among GMPCS-authorized licensees by the DoT; authorization confirmed in the January 2026 parliamentary reply. | Authorization does not establish a live household offer. The cited evidence does not provide a verified household tariff or order channel. |
| Jio Satellite Communications | Listed among GMPCS-authorized licensees by the DoT; authorization confirmed in the January 2026 parliamentary reply. | Authorization is not a consumer launch. October 2026 reporting says a consumer price and commercial launch date were not confirmed, and that spectrum and final clearances were still needed. |
| Amazon Kuiper, now referred to as Amazon Leo | The January 2026 government reply said its Indian GMPCS application was under examination. | An application under examination is not evidence of a launched Indian consumer service. The cited official status is from January 2026. |
These statuses answer different questions. A license authorization establishes permission within a regulatory framework; it does not prove a service is ready to sell to consumers, available at a particular address, or supported by a published plan. The most recent cited reporting in this article is dated 2 October 2026, so readiness can change: check current DoT notices and provider ordering pages before making a decision.

That distinction also explains why a provider list is not a shopping list. The DoT’s GMPCS page identifies licensees, not each company’s household plan, coverage checker, installation process or customer-service terms. A provider may be authorized to offer services within a defined framework while still needing further operational clearances and spectrum arrangements before a particular retail offer can be sold. Treat an announcement, application or waitlist as a status update—not proof that a customer can place and complete an order.
Is satellite internet a practical option for your location?
Satellite broadband is most relevant where terrestrial networks are difficult to extend or unavailable. In its 29 January 2026 parliamentary reply, the Ministry of Communications described satellite communications as a way to serve rural, underserved and unserved locations, including remote, coastal, border and mountainous areas that are difficult to cover with optical fiber or microwave links.
That does not mean satellite is automatically the best connection in every rural area. Compare it with the actual fiber, fixed wireless and mobile broadband options at your address. If a terrestrial provider can deliver a suitable connection, weigh its price, performance and support against a satellite offer only after that offer is orderable and its terms are published. If existing connections are absent or unreliable, satellite may become more valuable—but the buyer still needs confirmation of coverage, equipment, cost and service terms.

The practical question is not simply whether satellites can reach a region. It is whether a specific provider will supply a suitable plan at the premises, whether the customer can install the equipment under the service terms, and whether the complete cost and support arrangement make sense. A broad national service area or a government connectivity initiative cannot answer those household-level questions on its own.
Check availability at the exact address
A country-level authorization, a general coverage claim, a waitlist, a trial and an orderable residential plan are not interchangeable. Before treating a service as an option, confirm that the provider will accept an order for your exact location and identify what kind of offer it is: residential, business, mobility or wholesale. A service intended for a business or wholesale customer may not be available as a household subscription.
When checking an address, look for an actual plan selection and a clear path to fulfillment rather than relying on a map or expression of interest alone. Confirm whether the listed address is eligible for installation, whether the quoted service is fixed at one premises or intended for mobility, and whether the offer is for an end user or an intermediary. If a provider only allows a customer to register interest, that is not the same as a confirmed order, delivery date or service commitment.
What does a GMPCS authorization allow—and what does it not prove?
The DoT describes GMPCS as covering satellite voice and non-voice services, including data and internet, as well as satellite data connectivity for IoT and aggregator devices. Its framework sets a national service area and requires a separate Indian satellite earth-station gateway for each authorized satellite system. The licensing conditions also include privacy, lawful interception, Indian traffic routing and technical standards.

Most important for a potential customer, the DoT says a GMPCS license does not itself grant spectrum assignment or the right to use spectrum. Separate frequency assignment through the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) process is required. The October 2026 report’s statement that spectrum and final clearances were still needed illustrates why a license listing alone cannot be treated as a launch announcement.
Regulatory readiness is therefore one part of a buyer’s checklist, not a substitute for a provider’s Indian order page and plan documents. A customer should look for evidence of service authorization and readiness, but should make a purchase only when the provider confirms that the plan and equipment can be supplied and operated in India.
The DoT also describes a separate Commercial VSAT CUG licensing route. Its official page says a Commercial VSAT CUG licensee may provide internet after obtaining an ISP license. That licensing explanation should not be read as proof that Starlink, OneWeb, Jio or another named provider currently has an orderable household satellite plan. The license type and the actual service being offered to an end customer are separate questions.
For a buyer, the regulatory checklist is best treated as a sequence of gates: authorization, spectrum assignment and other applicable clearances, operational infrastructure such as the required gateway, then a provider’s actual Indian plan and order process. The DoT material establishes that these are not all interchangeable milestones. It does not supply a consumer launch date or make one predictable.

How should you compare satellite internet offers?
Once an Indian consumer offer is genuinely orderable, assess the complete service rather than relying on a satellite brand or orbit label. Provider-specific Indian documents should establish the terms below. The cited sources do not provide confirmed Indian household plans with which to fill in these comparisons today. In other words, there is not enough confirmed plan information here to declare Starlink faster, OneWeb cheaper or Jio the best value for Indian homes.

- Not official Starlink Bundle. No warranty.
- This is not an official starlink bundle. Purchasing this item does not come with a Starlink warranty.
- This is not Starlink. You will not receive a warranty with this bundle created by an outside seller.
- Orderability and service type: Confirm availability at the precise address, whether the offer serves homes, businesses or mobile users, and whether the provider will accept and fulfill an order rather than merely collect interest. Ask whether the plan is tied to a service address and whether the provider’s terms allow the use you have in mind.
- Total first-year and ongoing cost: Ask for the Indian terminal price, installation charge, recurring subscription, applicable taxes and any separate data or priority fees. Compare the complete costs over the same period, not just the monthly fee or equipment price. If the provider gives a one-time hardware charge and a separate monthly fee, calculate them together for the period you expect to use the service.
- Speed and latency terms: Check advertised speeds, any guaranteed or minimum performance, latency information, service commitments and the conditions under which they apply. Do not treat a network-wide figure or orbit category as a promise about your address. Look for the provider’s definitions and measurement conditions, not just a headline maximum.
- Data and congestion policy: Find out whether there are data caps, traffic management, deprioritization or additional charges. These terms can make two headline speed claims poor substitutes for each other. Check whether any stated allowance applies per month, what happens after it is reached and whether a higher-priority tier is optional or included.
- Site and installation requirements: Verify line of sight, obstructions, mounting, cabling, power needs and who is responsible for installation. Ask what happens if the chosen mounting position cannot provide the required view of the sky. Clarify whether an installer is included, whether extra mounting work costs more and who checks the site.
- Support and repairs: Confirm who provides local customer support, how equipment faults are handled, warranty coverage and expected repair turnaround. A technically available service is less useful if the customer cannot get equipment repaired promptly. Check whether the provider or an installer handles troubleshooting and whether any service commitment applies to repair visits.
- Equipment authorization and compatibility: Buy a terminal only through a provider or authorized Indian channel that confirms its model is compatible and lawful to operate with the Indian service. A generic accessory or an imported terminal does not provide a subscription or prove that the equipment can be used here. Get confirmation of the exact model and its relationship to the plan before paying.
Use the same questions for every provider and for the terrestrial alternative. That makes the comparison meaningful even if one company publishes a headline speed and another emphasizes coverage or hardware. If an essential term—such as a residential tariff, repair process or address eligibility—is missing, mark it as unknown rather than filling the gap with a foreign plan or an estimate.
How do satellite orbits affect the comparison?
The Ministry of Communications’ 2025 overview gives typical altitude ranges of 400–2,000 km for low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and 8,000–20,000 km for medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellites. It describes LEO’s shorter distance as favorable to lower latency, while MEO can cover larger regions with somewhat higher latency.
Those are broad characteristics, not measured performance for an Indian household. The cited evidence does not establish an address-level speed, latency, uptime or congestion result for Starlink, OneWeb or Jio. Do not infer the service terms of a particular Indian provider from orbit class alone; use the provider’s published Indian plan and service commitments when they exist.
Orbit information helps explain why satellite systems can have different technical trade-offs, but it cannot substitute for a customer plan. Coverage, capacity, equipment, network management and the service design all affect the experience a customer receives. Even a general expectation about latency is not a guarantee for a particular connection. Compare measured or contractually stated terms for the Indian offer, if published, rather than assigning a household performance result based only on altitude.
What do the government’s satellite capacity figures mean?
The Ministry’s 2025 overview reports satellite bandwidth capacity of 2 Gbps to 4 Gbps in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and 318 Mbps to 1.71 Gbps in Lakshadweep. These figures describe network capacity augmentation, not the speed available to an individual home or subscriber. They are evidence of connectivity investment in island regions, not a household plan benchmark.
The same overview says NewSpace India Limited had 15 communication satellites in orbit. That figure belongs to the government overview and is not a count of satellites available to any one consumer provider or a measure of retail capacity at a given location.
Keep the scale of each number clear when comparing services. A bandwidth capacity figure for a network or region is not equivalent to a per-customer speed tier, and it does not reveal how capacity is allocated among users. Likewise, a national operator’s satellite count does not show how many satellites serve a particular plan or whether the plan is available to a household. These figures provide context about India’s wider satellite-connectivity landscape, not a basis for selecting a retail package.

No official Indian residential price for Starlink was established in the cited 2 October 2026 reporting. The same report said Jio had no confirmed consumer price or commercial launch date. The cited evidence also does not establish a verified OneWeb household tariff. As a result, a specific India price, terminal cost or monthly fee should not be presented as confirmed on this evidence.
When a provider publishes a plan, check whether a quoted figure is a one-time equipment charge or recurring subscription, whether installation and taxes are additional, and whether the price applies to residential service in India. A price seen for another country, a business service or an imported kit is not a reliable estimate of an Indian household’s total cost.
For a fair cost comparison, put every confirmed charge into the same time frame: terminal, installation, recurring plan fees, taxes and any data or priority add-ons. Check whether equipment must be purchased outright or is otherwise priced under the plan, and whether any fee is recurring. Do not assume that a low monthly figure is the full cost if hardware, installation or priority data is listed separately. At present, the cited sources do not provide enough Indian household pricing detail to complete that calculation for these providers.

Not on the assumption that a consumer service will launch or that equipment sold for another market will work in India. The cited evidence does not establish an open consumer order channel or an approved Indian equipment channel for these services. A terminal or mounting accessory by itself cannot provide connectivity, and an imported model may not be compatible with an Indian plan or authorized for local operation.

- Gen 3 Satellite Dish: Third-generation antenna delivers a stronger, more stable signal and faster performance.
- Wi-Fi 6 Router: Modern router technology supports faster speeds, increased device capacity, and better efficiency.
- Extra 150FT Cable Included: Extended reach for more flexible installation in large spaces or hard-to-access locations.
- High-Speed, Low-Latency Internet: Stream HD content, video conference, or work remotely with confidence.

- The service can be ordered for your exact address.
- The terminal model is approved for the Indian service and its operating requirements.
- The complete equipment, installation and recurring charges are clear.
- The provider explains support, warranty and repair arrangements.
These checks apply to accessories as well as the main terminal. A compatible router, mount or installation tool cannot create service access by itself. If a provider later publishes an approved equipment channel, verify that the specific item is intended for that service and that the order includes a valid way to activate the connection. Avoid treating a generic online listing as evidence of provider authorization.
What is the most sensible choice today?
For most Indian households, the immediate decision is between a terrestrial connection that can be ordered now and a satellite service that has a confirmed Indian consumer offer. The cited evidence confirms regulatory authorizations for Starlink, OneWeb and Jio, but does not establish household ordering, Indian prices, coverage maps or plan performance for them. If you are in a remote or underserved area, monitor provider order pages and regulator updates; do not treat authorization or network-capacity figures as proof that a household connection is ready.
The Ministry of Communications’ 29 January 2026 parliamentary reply identifies the potential role of satellite communications in rural, remote, coastal, border and mountainous areas where terrestrial links are difficult. That makes satellite broadband worth watching if fiber, microwave, fixed wireless or mobile service does not meet your needs. It does not make a not-yet-orderable service a current option. Decide using what can actually be installed, priced and supported at your address.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Starlink available in India?
The DoT lists Starlink as a GMPCS-authorized licensee, and the Ministry of Communications confirmed that authorization in its 29 January 2026 parliamentary reply. Those records do not establish household ordering. The Economic Times reported on 2 October 2026 that spectrum and final clearances were still needed before service could be offered to customers. Check a current provider order page for your exact address.
Starlink vs. OneWeb in India: which is better?
The available confirmed information does not support ranking them for Indian households. Both appear among the GMPCS-authorized providers, but no verified household tariff, address-level coverage, Indian plan performance or open consumer order channel is established here. Compare them only when each publishes Indian residential terms, including cost, speed, data policy, installation and support.
How much will Starlink cost in India?
The Economic Times report dated 2 October 2026 said Starlink had no official Indian residential price. Do not treat a price from another country, an imported terminal listing or an estimate as a confirmed Indian household tariff. When a plan is published, check terminal, installation, subscription, taxes and any data or priority charges.

Verify current provider ordering information before treating it as available.
Which satellite internet works in rural India?
Satellite communications can help reach rural, underserved and unserved locations, including remote, coastal, border and mountainous areas that are difficult to cover with terrestrial links, according to the Ministry of Communications’ 29 January 2026 reply. That does not confirm a particular household plan. Check exact-address orderability and compare it with available fiber, fixed wireless and mobile options.
Can I buy an imported Starlink or satellite terminal and use it in India?
Do not assume so. The cited sources do not establish an open Indian consumer order channel or an approved Indian equipment channel. An imported terminal may not be compatible with an Indian plan or authorized for local operation, and equipment alone does not provide a subscription. Wait for confirmation of the precise model from a provider or authorized Indian reseller.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Starlink, OneWeb and Jio have GMPCS authorizations, but authorization alone does not mean Indian households can order service. As of 13 October 2026, the cited information does not establish consumer plans, prices or coverage for these providers. Check exact-address availability, full plan costs, equipment approval and support before buying; until an Indian service is orderable, compare with terrestrial connections you can actually get.
