Starlink vs. 5G Home Internet: Which Is Better for Your Home?

5G home internet is often the simpler, lower-cost choice when it is available at your address and delivers a strong, consistent indoor signal. Starlink is worth considering when terrestrial options are limited and your property can accommodate its satellite terminal. Neither wins everywhere: check eligibility, current terms and performance at your exact home rather than treating advertised speeds or starting prices as guarantees.

How Starlink and 5G home internet work

Starlink delivers broadband over satellites to a user terminal at your home. Its kit includes the terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply and mount. 5G home internet is fixed wireless: a provider-supplied gateway connects to the carrier’s cellular network and shares that connection with devices in the home. The services rely on different infrastructure, so terrain, building layout, terminal exposure and cellular signal can affect them differently. Starlink’s specifications, Verizon’s 5G Home page and T-Mobile’s Home Internet page describe these service types and equipment.

Check availability at your exact address first

Eligibility is local. Enter your service address in each provider’s availability tool and confirm the offer at checkout. A phone showing 5G coverage nearby—or a broad coverage map—does not establish that a carrier will sell fixed home internet at your address or that the signal will work well indoors.

The FCC says fixed broadband availability on its National Broadband Map is reported by location, while mobile coverage is modeled; the map does not show indoor mobile availability. Use the map as context, not as a substitute for an address-specific provider check. FCC map guidance (updated November 25, 2025).

Compare performance without treating advertised speeds as a test

Starlink’s published specifications give typical overall user downloads of 25–220 Mbps, uploads of 5–20 Mbps, and land latency of 25–60 ms; it says latency can exceed 100 ms in certain remote locations. Its plan table lists different ranges by service: Standard (Fixed) at 25–100 Mbps down and 5–10 Mbps up; Priority (Fixed) at 40–220 Mbps down and 8–25 Mbps up; Mobile at 5–50 Mbps down and 2–10 Mbps up; and Mobile Priority at 40–220 Mbps down and 8–25 Mbps up. The listed latency is 25–60 ms for the fixed plans and under 99 ms for the mobile plans. These are provider specifications, not a prediction for an individual home. Starlink says performance varies by location, time of day and plan precedence, and that speeds and uninterrupted service are not guaranteed. Starlink specifications.

Verizon and T-Mobile also say speeds vary with cellular-network conditions and location. Actual results can depend on the gateway’s signal and network load; a provider’s advertised maximum is not a head-to-head result against Starlink. The sources cited here do not establish an independent, same-address comparison of the two services.

Compare total cost and current offer terms

The following are U.S. prices displayed on provider pages accessed in 2026, not guaranteed offers for every address. Prices, eligibility, promotions and terms can change; verify the current checkout total, including applicable taxes or fees.

When prices are close, compare the ongoing price after discounts, required mobile bundles, price-guarantee duration, taxes and fees, equipment or installation costs, and what happens when a promotion ends. Account for installation and property constraints

Starlink

Starlink requires a terminal placed with suitable exposure to connect to satellites. Check the current installation guidance and whether your property has a practical mounting location before choosing it. Obstructions or an unsuitable location can undermine the service even if the address is eligible.

5G home internet

A 5G provider supplies a home gateway, but where it sits can affect cellular reception. Try the placement guidance from the provider and assess signal and performance in the rooms where you use the connection. Strong outdoor or nearby phone coverage alone does not establish strong indoor gateway performance.

Which service should you choose?

Choose 5G home internet if

  • A carrier confirms service at your address and the gateway gets a strong, steady signal indoors.
  • The eligible price is lower after accounting for any bundle, AutoPay, promotion, taxes and fees.
  • You want a gateway-based setup and your local results meet your household’s needs.

Choose Starlink if

  • Terrestrial broadband options are limited and Starlink confirms residential availability at your address.
  • Your property can support a suitable terminal location.
  • The current plan’s price and actual trial or cancellation terms make sense for you, and its observed performance meets your needs.

As broader context, an FCC 2026 report discusses capacity and congestion and says satellite broadband trails most fixed wireless providers in rural areas in the comparisons it cites. That is a satellite-wide regulatory comparison—not a controlled Starlink-versus-5G test, nor a prediction for a particular home. FCC 26-55.

A practical way to make the decision

  1. Check both providers by exact service address. Save the plans and terms actually offered, not just a national coverage claim.
  2. Confirm the physical setup. For Starlink, identify a suitable terminal location; for 5G, check gateway reception where the provider recommends placing it.
  3. Compare like with like. Record download, upload, latency, peak-hour consistency, total monthly cost and any bundle or network-management conditions.
  4. Use a trial or return option only after reading its terms. Verify duration, cancellation steps, equipment return rules and any charges before relying on it.
  5. Choose based on results at home. If both qualify, prefer the service that meets your real usage needs at the better all-in price—not the one with the more impressive advertised maximum.
