Choose Starlink Residential if the dish will stay at one household address and you want unlimited data. Choose Starlink Roam if you need to take the connection between locations, use it while traveling, or require eligible in-motion service. Residential is tied to a fixed, land-based service address and does not support roaming or in-motion use. Roam is built for travel, but its data allowance, international access, ocean coverage, hardware requirements, price and availability depend on the plan and country.
The offer displayed for your actual service address is the authority for current pricing and eligibility. Starlink changes plan names and terms by market, so the comparison below explains the decision rather than promising one global price or feature set.

Residential or Roam at a glance
| Decision point | Residential | Roam | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Personal or household use at one fixed, land-based address | Portable connectivity for travel and changing locations | Start with where the terminal will be used most often. |
| Use away from the registered address | Roaming unsupported | Designed for travel, subject to local and plan rules | A second location or regular trips generally require checking a Roam offer. |
| Use while moving | Unsupported | Available only where the plan, hardware and jurisdiction permit it | Do not assume every Roam terminal can operate in every moving vehicle or country. |
| Data | Unlimited data on Residential plans; speed tiers and availability vary by region | Allowance and post-allowance speeds vary by tier and market | Compare both the high-speed allowance and what happens after it is consumed. |
| International travel | Not a travel service | Tier-specific; some plans stay within the home country or designated region | Check destination, length of stay and whether an upgrade is required. |
| Coastal or ocean use | Not included as a travel feature | Ocean Mode is described for Roam Unlimited | Confirm ocean eligibility and local maritime rules before departure. |
| Pausing | Standby Mode may be available, with country and account exceptions | Standby Mode may be available, with country and account exceptions | Standby is low-speed emergency connectivity, not ordinary service. |
| Price and eligibility | Address and account specific | Country, address and plan specific | Use the live Starlink offer for the intended address. |
If the terminal will remain at your house, Residential is normally the simpler and more data-rich choice. If portability is a requirement rather than an occasional possibility, start with Roam.

A fixed service address
Starlink describes Residential as personal or household service at a fixed, land-based location. The service address determines whether a plan is available and which performance tier is offered. The dish can be installed at a home, cabin or other stationary property, but Residential is not a license to move the terminal between addresses.

- Not official Starlink Bundle. No warranty.
- This is not an official starlink bundle. Purchasing this item does not come with a Starlink warranty.
- This is not Starlink. You will not receive a warranty with this bundle created by an outside seller.
Starlink says Residential does not support roaming and does not support in-motion use. Moving the terminal to a different property or using it in a moving car, boat or RV therefore falls outside the plan’s intended operation. Check the account’s available options before relocating equipment; do not assume that changing the address informally preserves service.
Unlimited data, with local performance differences
All Residential plans include unlimited data according to Starlink’s Residential help material. Unlimited does not mean every address receives the same speed or priority: plan availability, advertised speed tier and network performance vary by region. The practical benefit is that a household can use the connection for work, video calls, streaming, gaming and downloads without a stated monthly high-speed data bucket on the Residential offer.
Because speed tiers and availability are local, use the plan selector for the exact address rather than importing a speed or price quoted for another country. Network conditions, congestion and the selected tier still affect the experience even when data is unlimited.
What Starlink Roam is designed to do
Portable use between locations
Starlink describes Roam as connectivity on the go, including remote work, international travel and use with a car, boat or RV. Roam is the relevant family of plans when the terminal must operate away from its registered service location. The permission is subject to the specific tier, destination, hardware and regulatory conditions.
In-motion service is conditional
Roam material discusses in-motion use, but that does not make every setup automatically legal or technically compatible. The terminal, mounting arrangement, country, vehicle or vessel and active service tier all matter. Some jurisdictions prohibit or limit satellite service while moving. Verify the local rules and the hardware requirements before relying on connectivity on a road, coastline or boat.
How data works on Residential and Roam
Residential: unlimited allowance
Residential’s unlimited data is the central reason it suits a stationary household with several users. Starlink can still offer different performance tiers by location, so “unlimited” describes the allowance, not a guaranteed speed. A family that routinely transfers large files or streams across multiple devices should compare the available tier at its address.
Roam: allowance, then a slower mode
Starlink’s January 2026 help update says the former 50GB Roam allowance became 100GB in most markets at no additional cost. That statement applies to the 100GB offer described on the help page, not to every Roam plan worldwide. Confirm the allowance shown in your account before choosing a tier.

For that 100GB offer, use above the high-speed allowance continues as unlimited low-speed data for the rest of the billing period. Starlink says calls and texts remain possible, while streaming, downloads and video calls may be limited. The billing period then resets according to the account’s normal cycle. A traveler who needs sustained video meetings or media uploads should treat the 100GB high-speed amount as the meaningful budget, not as an unlimited broadband replacement.
Questions to ask before selecting a Roam tier
- How much high-speed data does the exact local offer include?
- Does service continue at a defined low speed after the allowance?
- Are video calls, streaming or large downloads realistic after the threshold?
- Does the plan cover the countries or region on your itinerary?
- Will an international or ocean option be required?
International, regional and ocean travel rules
Roam Unlimited and the 30-day home-country rule
Starlink’s current Roam information says Roam Unlimited can be used for up to 30 days outside the registered home country at a time. “Up to 30 days” is a plan condition, not a guarantee that every border crossing, destination or regulatory environment is supported. Check the account’s country rules before departure and again if the trip will exceed that period.
Other Roam plans may be geographically restricted
Other listed Roam plans are described as restricted to the registered home country or a designated region. International travel on those tiers may require an upgrade. A plan that works for domestic camping therefore may not work for a cross-border trip, even if the terminal and account remain unchanged.
Ocean Mode
Starlink describes an Ocean Mode option for Roam Unlimited. Ocean access has different regulatory and coverage considerations from land travel, and it should not be inferred from ordinary countrywide Roam coverage. Confirm that Ocean Mode is displayed for your account, that the vessel and destination are eligible, and that local maritime rules permit operation.
Price, availability and market differences
There is no reliable worldwide price table for this comparison. Residential availability depends on the service address and region. Roam names, data tiers, international permissions and monthly charges also differ by country. Promotions can change the amount shown at checkout.
Before paying, enter the actual service address and review the live offer for:
- Monthly service price and any one-time activation or hardware charge.
- The plan name and included high-speed Roam allowance.
- Whether taxes, duties or shipping are added in your market.
- International, in-motion and ocean eligibility.
- Whether Standby Mode is available on that account.
A price quoted for the United States, another continent or an earlier promotion should not be presented as your local price. Starlink’s plan pages and account checkout are the current source for that decision.

Standby Mode: pausing without normal broadband
Eligible customers may be offered Standby Mode, subject to country and account exceptions. Standby is intended to reduce service while the terminal is not in regular use and to make reactivation easy. It provides low-speed data suitable for emergency messaging and basic contact, not the normal high-speed Residential or Roam experience.

Do not select Standby if you need ordinary browsing, streaming, work calls or large transfers during the paused period. Check the account’s terms for eligibility, billing treatment and the exact reactivation process; availability is not universal.
Starlink Mini and the hardware decision
Mini is portable hardware, not a separate service plan
Starlink calls Mini a portable kit for internet on the go. Hardware and service are separate decisions: buying a Mini does not by itself grant Roam rights, and a Roam subscription does not require Mini. Compatibility depends on country and plan.
Plan compatibility
Starlink’s support material says Mini is compatible with Roam plans in most countries and with Residential plans only in limited regions. If you want Mini at a stationary home, verify that your country allows the intended Residential combination. If you want to travel, verify both local Mini availability and the Roam tier’s travel permissions.
Price and power requirements
The US Starlink product page showed a Mini kit starting at $199 when retrieved in 2026. That is a US-market hardware starting price, not a monthly service charge or a global quote, and it may change.
Starlink specifies a USB Power Delivery source rated at 100W (20V/5A) for optimal Mini operation. Battery use is possible when the battery or power station meets the required voltage, current and delivery profile. A USB-C power bank that cannot sustain that output may cause instability or prevent full operation, so check its continuous rating rather than its advertised capacity alone.
A step-by-step way to choose
- Map every place you will use the terminal. List your primary home, seasonal properties, campsites, countries, roads and waterways. Mark which uses are stationary and which involve movement.
- Decide whether portability is essential. If the dish will stay at one land-based household address, begin with Residential. If moving it is a core requirement, begin with Roam.
- Estimate high-speed data. Add work calls, cloud backups, streaming, gaming updates and downloads for the people using the connection. Compare that estimate with the exact Roam allowance shown in your market.
- Check travel geography. For international trips, identify whether your tier is home-country or region restricted, whether Roam Unlimited’s 30-day condition applies, and whether an upgrade is needed.
- Check movement and vessel use. Confirm in-motion eligibility for the terminal, vehicle or boat, destination and local regulations. Do not rely on a generic Roam label.
- Review the live checkout offer. Confirm monthly price, hardware cost, taxes, shipping, data terms, address eligibility and Standby availability.
- Match hardware to power. If selecting Mini, verify local availability and plan compatibility, then budget for a power source capable of 100W USB-PD if battery operation is planned.
- Recheck before a long trip. Plan terms and travel permissions can change. Review the account immediately before crossing a border or heading offshore.
Which plan fits common situations?
Permanent family home
Residential is the natural starting point when one household uses the terminal at one address. Unlimited data avoids managing a Roam allowance, while the local Residential tier determines the advertised performance.

Seasonal cabin or second property
Do not assume a Residential dish can be moved between the primary home and cabin. Because Residential roaming is unsupported, check the address-specific options and whether a Roam plan is offered for the intended pattern of use.
RV or frequent road travel
Roam is the relevant category for a terminal that travels. Confirm in-motion support if the connection must remain active while driving, and budget around the high-speed allowance if several people stream or work online.
Cross-border remote worker
Look specifically at international terms. Roam Unlimited’s stated allowance of up to 30 days outside the registered home country may fit a short assignment; other tiers may require an upgrade or remain confined to the home country or region.
Boat or offshore trip
Check whether Ocean Mode is offered on Roam Unlimited and whether the route, vessel and jurisdiction permit service. Ordinary land-based Roam coverage should not be treated as proof of ocean availability.
Emergency or occasional backup
If the terminal will be unused for long periods, investigate Standby Mode. It is designed for low-speed emergency messaging and easy reactivation, not for maintaining full household internet while paused.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing Residential for a mobile setup: Residential is fixed-location service and does not support roaming or in-motion use. Select a travel-capable offer instead.
- Treating 100GB as a universal Roam rule: The January 13, 2026 change applies to the 100GB offer in most markets; other tiers and countries can differ.
- Assuming low-speed data equals normal broadband: After the cited 100GB allowance, calls and texts may continue while streaming, downloads and video calls are limited.
- Crossing borders without checking the tier: Many Roam options are restricted to a home country or designated region. Verify international access before travel.
- Assuming every Roam terminal works in motion: Hardware, country and regulatory restrictions still apply.
- Using a local price as a global quote: Price, promotion, taxes and eligibility are address- and market-specific.
- Buying Mini without checking power: Optimal operation calls for a 100W USB-PD source rated at 20V/5A. A battery’s capacity alone does not prove compatibility.
- Confusing hardware with service: Mini is a portable kit; it does not replace the need for an eligible plan.
- Expecting Standby to provide full service: Standby is low-speed connectivity for limited needs and reactivation, not regular broadband.
Bottom-line decision
Pick Residential for one fixed household address, unlimited data and no need to move the terminal. Pick Roam when travel, multiple locations or eligible in-motion use is central to the job. Then validate the exact country, address, data allowance, international or ocean permissions, hardware compatibility and current price in your Starlink account. Those local details—not a generic plan name—determine whether the service will meet your trip or household’s needs.
